All of this “we are going to do something performative for you to donate money” is kind of insulting. I mean, just say, “We’re going to feed hungry children. Got a few for us?” Yeah, sure, will do. I don’t need to watch celebrities temporarily inconvenience themselves to get me to fork over.
Then again, how about getting people to bid on celebrities going on national TV and saying “I’m a selfish egotistical ass” over and over again. I’d lay down my money.

Pretty much all unsolicited mail that asks for donations is exactly that. “We’re going to feed hungry children. Got a few for us?” Do you give to every child-feeding charity that asks? Do you give to every charity that asks? Do you have zero standards for deciding which charities to support?
Everyone has their triggers that cause the decision to be involved. Some people give to ones that use poverty porn or pictures & stories of poor widdle aminalz. Some people research which charities most efficiently use their funds. Some give to causes they feel personally connected to.
There are countless charities (good & bad) with their hand out. Having an event throws light & gains attention. It shows that someone likable (presumably) supports the cause, lending validity to it. It also gives something back to the donators rather than be just outright begging.
My point is, people have different "requirements" to get them to donate. A bit of entertainment is not such an awful thing.
As for the 2nd bit, personally, I'd enjoy watching spoiled celebs & rich jerks having to endure walking about their homes & watching videos of themselves while having the innumerous ways they're wasteful, rude, & entitled being pointed out to them in glorious detail including the occasional charts & statistics.

Essentially all unsolicited/junk mail begging for money is, exactly, “We’re going to feed hungry children. Got a few for us?”
How many hungry child organizations have you donated to? How many other charities?
How did they get your attention & stick out from the 1000s asking for help?
Having a show brings light/attention to the cause & raises interest, not to mention offers something back rather than simply being yet another hand stuck out. Involving celebrities draws people in & lends credibility, since these people are willing to be associated with them.
      It works. < bottom line
As to the other bit, it would be great to have privileged people have to politely walk around their homes, etc & watch videos of their own behavior while being told in detail, with the occasional graph & statistic, just how wasteful, rude, & spoiled they are compared to "average people" & to those the charity is trying to assist.
People who don't act like garbage wouldn't have to worry they'd be pressured to appear on the show. Ah, would be glorious.

Dara captures the utter contempt I have for these self-centered ignorant Z-listers when they pronounce "I had no idea!"
This is what "woke" actually means... the basic idea of not being willfully blind to the obvious.
