What I love about the Jack Burton character in Big Trouble is how he has next to no effect on any of the goings on in the movie yet he believes he's saving the day.

Favorite off-the-top-of-my-head fantasy movies: The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad. Harryhausen monsters, a princess turned into a living doll, Torin Thatcher at his villainous best; Dragonslayer and Labyrinth from the 1980's; I Married A Witch, from the 40's, with Veronica Lake and Fredric March, a precursor to Bewitched and Bell, Book, & Candle.

This is why Janet and I ADORE your channel. You and we are all from around the same time with many things in common. Powell and Pressbergers "Thief..." is sublime and has followed me from my youth. "One Touch of Venus is yet another movie where we both scream " IDIOT, it's Ava Gardner, and she's offering herself to you, say yes dum dum. She and James M are incredible in Pandora directed by Jack Cardiff. I agree Kim's loss of power is awful 1950s misogyny.

Love “The Thief of Bagdad” (1940). Great fantasy story and color. I’ve watched it a good half a dozen times throughout the years. First time as a kid it was a magical wonder!
Fan of “The Raven” as well specially when the two magicians go at it like a duel.
Love the Sinbad and Greek mythology fantasy movies by Ray Harryhausen and his stop motion animation.
    - The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958)
    - Jason and the Argonauts (1963)
    - The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973)
    - Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977)
    - Clash of the Titans (1981)
If I had to pick just one of Ray’s movies it’d be “Jason and the Argonauts”.

Great selection, Terry. I had completely forgotten about H.R. Pufnstuf. It was shown on UK TV, when I was a kid. It looks batshit crazy (in a good way) nowadays, but I know, deep inside, that, were I to watch it - I'd love it. I think that 'The Magic Sword' and 'Jack The Giant Killer' (which scared the bejeezus out of me, when I saw it as a kid), would make a damn good double feature.
    Thanks, yet again. 👍👍👍

Great list of films I've seen and some that I haven't. I agree The Thief of Bagdad is a great fantasy film, both the 1940 and the 1925 although they are so different. The 1940 version is the better fantasy, though.
    I'd like to suggest:
    Waxworks (1924)
    Lost Horizon (1937)
A Matter of Life and Death (1946)
    Brigadoon (1954)
    The Dark Crystal (1982)
    Orlando (1992)

Excellent selection. I recall Pandora and the Flying Dutchman getting a bit of a revival in the 80s and some recognition. I think here was a restoration that was released.
The Raven and Masque of the Red Death were Corman's two best Poe films in my opinion. I think that magic duel at the end of the former may have inspired some of the effects in the MCU Doctor Strange.

Agreed on the Harry Potter and Tolkein. Great films for sure but too mainstream for a film festival. I also tried to step outside the box and chose mostly "Low Fantasy" for my list.
    Here's my list:
The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou - 2004
    The Fall - 2006
    Pan's Labyrinth - 2006 (Spanish)
The City of Lost Children - 1995

I used to confuse ONE TOUCH OF VENUS with DOWN TO EARTH, a decidedly non-Christian sequel to HERE COMES MR. JORDAN. The difference is that while Terpsichore, the Goddess of Dance and Chorus, was played by Rita Hayworth (far better than Olivia Newton-John, who could barely dance at all, played her in the semi-sequel XANADU!), The Goddess of Beauty and Love Venus was played by Ava Gardner.

Took the challenge of seeing I could program a Fantasy Marathon from my collection. Here were my picks (making sure there's no crossover.)
A Matter of Life and Death - You had Thief of Baghdad so I'm countering with Powell and Pressburger's other great fantasy film.
After Life - great and unusual mash-up between an after-life fantasy and a documentary.
Blancanieves - It's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, but it's silent and they're bullfighters
The Book of Life - charming Mexican animated film that we watch every Day of the Dead
The Fabulous Baron Munchausen - the Karel Zeman film, rather than the Gilliam one or the Nazi one. Zeman was very influential on Gilliam and well worth seeing. Nothing quite like him.
The Great Yokai War - Takashi Miike's attempt at a Harry Potter franchise as well as an extended beer commercial. One of my wife's favourites.
The Holy Mountain - I only saw this recently and was blown away. We don't have Jodorowsky's Dune, but we have this.
Interstate 60 - very odd fantasy road movie from Bob Gale - one of the writers of Back to the Future and with both of the leads in minor roles.
La Antenna - a city has all its sound stolen. Great effects with captions.
The Phantom Tollbooth - Chuck Jones animated film of one of my favourite books of all time. Starring Butch Patrick.
Sampo - Russian fantasy from Aleksandr Ptushko. Based on a Finnish legend.
When the Cat Comes - a fair brings a cat with sunglasses to a small Czech town. When the sunglasses come off, the cat makes people reveal who they really are.
Zu: Warriors of the Magic Mountain - the film that inspired Big Trouble in Little China. Tsui Hark employed ILM to do the special effects.

I need to watch The Magic Sword now - it looks like it has everything I love about films. Discovering new movies through your channel has become one of my favourite things to do, Terry - thank you for sharing these with us. ❤️
When it comes to unique fantasy films, I have two recommendations:
    - The polish version of The Witcher, from the early 2000s (I think). I love the books, watched the Netflix adaptation, had rather mixed feelings about it and later discovered this 20 year old predecessor at a movie-convention. It has relatively poor effects but you can tell that the actors took their craft and the material seriously.
    - Iron Warrior, from 1987 I think. It is the follow-up to two of the worst films within it's genre, which basically consists of cheap, Italian copycats of Conan the Barbarian. The first two are nigh unwatchable, yet the third one had a new director, was shot on Malta (meaning that the landscape is naturally breathtaking) and suddenly demonstrated such unexpectedly great craftsmanship in all technical aspects. I have a habit of watching these messy old trash-films with my buddy and we were completely blown away by how good and coherent this one turned out to be.

i'd probably add the Karel Zeman films but if you haven't already done an episode related to his work, his opus is probably worthy of its own specific attention. Others here mentioned MirrorMask (Yes!- maybe a Neil Gaiman edition?) and "Spirited Away"- also yes! was surprised to hear that "Spirited Away" has been turned into a stage musical!! (as has "My Neighbour Totoro")-I'm fascinated by stage craft and how they can create live effects, but usually such productions are very costly to see, so I'm always glad to hear that some get filmed (not as movies but filmed as stage productions) so that those with less income might still get a chance to see them. if you do Mirrormask it could be doubled up alongside Bernard Rose's first feature "Paperhouse". lastly, I've been checking out some light fantasy films from Czeck director Oldrich Lipsky including "Three Veterans", "The Mysterious Castle in the Carpathians", "Lemonade Joe", and "Adele hasn't Had Her Dinner Yet". All quite fun and inventive made under often politically conservative restraint with collaborators like Jan Svankmeyer who were at times banned by their own governments.

I can recognize a classical piece when I hear it. The intro has the last movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 and the outro has the first movement of Vivaldi's "Spring" concerto of "The Four Seasons."
"The Thief of Baghdad" deserves to be a classic like "The Wizard of Oz." That movie can be seen on a free streaming service. My dad, when he was a kid, recall a time when he was in a movie theater and observed a movie being shown where a giant foot was about to step on someone. When I saw it on TV, if I recall correctly, it was on TNT. Maybe I'll get a physical blu-ray resease of it whenever I'm ready.
So, you asked about what other fantasy movies I've enjoyed outside of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings (and The Hobbit). Here's my list (in no particular order. Note the the "T" is for the ones I've seen in the theater.):
    Legend
    Dragonslayer
    Labyrinth (T)
    The Dark Crystal (T)
The NeverEnding Story (T) (The second one is not as good.)
    Willow (T)
    Clash of the Titans (1981)
    Jason and the Argonauts (1963)
    The Golden Voyage of Sinbad
    The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad
That's about all I can think of.

Can't remember if it was Karloff or Price who in "The Raven" offer Peter Lorre's character a glass of milk (when all he wants is red wine!) and his reply is "Vomitable" lol! From that moment on that word entered my personal lexicon and can only be said in the inimitable Lorre accent.

Very nice piece. I actually have The Magic Sword, but have yet to watch it. I'll have to put that on pretty soon. I generally like Bert I Gordon, and I know Maila "Vampira" Nurmi's in there, somewhere. Anyway, the perfect double feature for me is Buckaroo Banzai(84) and Big Trouble In Little China(86).Firstly, W. D. Richter directed BB and wrote Big Trouble. Also, the character of David Lo-Pan from Big Trouble is a variation on Hanoi Xan- the villain for the planned sequel to Buckaroo Banzai. They're also both parodies the 80s cheese going on around them that also manage to be more suspenseful and exciting than most of the action movies they're making fun of.

Anything that exposes great eastern Asian swordfighting. So many people think Star Wars has the greatest sword duels which is laughable. One person saw the latest trailer for The Acolyte (Disney+ SW show) and saw the wire Fu and accused the creators of ripping off The Matrix. Eastern Asian action is so much more dynamic and fun and people should know the origin of truly great sword duels and see what they're missing!😊

If we’re looking at fantasy movies, I’d chip in with a vote for ‘The 5,000 Fingers Of Doctor T’, which was scripted by Theodore Giessel aka Dr Seuss.
It wasn’t a financial or cinematic success, and that’s our loss because Dr Seuss never made another film with such direct involvement.
‘TFTFODT’ is definitely fantasy in the same displaced protagonist vein as the pre-war ‘Wizard Of Oz’ but way hella darker, which is probably why it didn’t mesh with the movie-going aspirations of 1953 audiences.

Good list Terry. The Thief of Bagdad was directed by Michael Powell of the Powell and Pressburger team. Love all their films. I almost added their 1946 masterpiece A Matter of Life and Death to my below list but it isn't strictly a full on fantasy film, unless you believe in a black and white heaven full of filing cabinets, what oh! 😇
My list of a fantasy session could be Jean Cocteau's magnificent La Belle et la Bete, 1946, Tom Thumb 1958, Darby O'Gill and the Little People 1959; that howling banshee scared the @*!? out of me as a child. Jason and The Argonauts 1963; that creaky Talos needed oiling, Excalibur 1981 with sultry, sexy Helen Mirren, The Sword and The Sorcerer 1982, The Beastmaster 1982, Krull 1983 and The Never Ending Story 1984.
I thought of also adding In Search of The Castaways but again, not strictly a full on fantasy film though there are some fantastic natural occurrences.

Greetings; I have seen some of these movies and I have enjoyed them. I remember when I was a kid I was waiting for my father and I saw a piece of a Russian fantasy movie that had giants and dragons, probably based on folklore. I'd love to see it some day, but I have no idea of the name. There is a Brazilian fantasy movie based on a children's book, Pluft. It centers on a haunted house on an island and pirates come to the island. The younger ghosts don't believe in people and are frightened when the pirates arrive. Perhaps you can find it. "The Magic Sword" & "Pufnstuf" instantly transport me back to Saturday mornings (& afternoon). Very decent dozen.
Perhaps I would add Harryhausen's "Jason and the Argonauts" & "Mysterious Island" (with Michael Craig)

Mysterious Island never hit for me. The cast is a bit meh.
