I saw "At The Earth's Core" recently, and I will never forget Peter Cushing's line: "You can't mesmerize me, I'm British!" Pure gold.

"Green Lantern" was one of my favorite comic books when I was a young lad. "The Flash" was my favorite.
I knew that "Green Lantern" would require more suspension of disbelief because of all the different alien races that made up the Green Lantern universe.
There was one small scene that completely ripped me out of the movie.
When Hal Jorden puts on the Green Lantern suit for the first time he pulls the shirt/tunic over his head and pulls it down over his torso. The CGI of the shirt distorts and bounces and then they added a sound effect that reminded me of a Bugs Bunny cartoon. Sort of a "Beee-yooop" sound. I slapped my forehead and yelled WTF!?!?!
My brain was set on "ten year old kid" mode, my fuse blew when the movie tried to reset my brain to "four year old" mode.
Yeah, moments like that take you out of the movie, unfortunately.
I think a lot of the reasons why people did not like Green Lantern back in the day is simply due to the character. People understand Batman but Green Lanterns powers ARE whacky and people were just not down for that.
Yep there's a magic genie aspect to the GLs which needs a lot of backstory.
'Colonoscopy' had me laughing and 'brain is a 24/7 operation' had me laughing hard😀. Thank you Terry.

My favorite killer foliage movies are The Ruins and Little Shop of Horrors (both versions), but in my "guilty pleasures" subcategory, From Hell It Came ties for first with The Happening.

Like "Twister", I know the 80s "Dune" movie had a lot of problems but like you said, it was entertaining anyway. One of my main gripes with it is how they don't let the audience know that Baron Harkonnen is Paul's and Alia's grandfather! He's the father of Jessica. Kind of important to know!
The casting for this version of "Dune" could not have been better. While re-reading the book, I can just see the actors in my head. I know Paul's supposed to be 15 when he survives the gom jabar test, but I love Kyle McLachlan anyway.
Dune is also incredibly hard to adapt. Villeneuve did the right thing by making it a two parter.
The extended cut of Lynch's Dune is even better (its on CZcams). Still not great, but a lot of fun.
BTW: I think Alia whispers "goodbye grandfather" just before she kills him. More of a hint than an explanation. But at least Lynch tried.
@terrytalksmovies its going to be a three parter. Piranha should win an Oscar compaired to sharknado!! I have liked green lantern since the comics. Do you have battlefield earth? Worst movie of last century.

Have to say that I prefer Lynch's version. Even though it's missing a lot of the story, it still manages its time a lot better, both maintaining the structure of the book, getting most of the points across, and making the audience believe that somebody cares about somebody else. Villeneuve's version is extremely cold, and I never got a sense that anyone even liked each other. And man, Villeneuve did Chani dirty.
Thanks, Terry. So nice to see Frank Henenlotter and AWOTM receive attention and love. I think Dreamscape is underrated, but I was much younger when I saw it, and I need a re-watch to see if the film has aged well. I recall being impressed with Eddie Albert's palpable, overwhelming guilt and terror in facing his responsibilities.
Eddie Albert was a fine actor but everyone remembers him for only Green Acres.
@@terrytalksmovies - what about ROMAN HOLIDAY, where he played Gregory Peck's hipster pal? Or OKLAHOMA, where he played the skirt-chasing peddler Ali Hakim? (Yes, I was in OKLAHOMA in high school-does it show?) Or "Captain Future" in CAPTAIN NEWMAN, M.D.?
Eddie Albert was a television star for longer than anybody thinks-he wrote and starred in the first original play written for television, THE LOVE NEST, in 1936! Sadly it wasn't recorded in any way, because television back than was still in its experimental stage, and station WNBC was called "W2XBS", and most of the television sets were in the hands of hardcore nerds who largely built them themselves.
During the buildup to WWII, he was a traveling clown with a theater troupe-and in his spare time a spy for U.S. Army Intelligence, checking up on U-Boat activity in Latin America.

Exactly. If I'm eating wagyu, my taste buds are in a different place than if I'm enjoying a can of chilli. Or if I'm drinking chinotto, it's not the same as when I'm sipping single malt.
How about the term "Not so great movies"? Decades ago on of our TV stations ran a lot of old 60s and 70s Sci-Fi under that heading. Lottsa fun.
Those were content gold for tv stations everywhere.
Amazon Women on the Moon is not a bad movie. It’s a perfectly good movie, that’s on my all-time favourites list.

There are so many 'not so great' ones. The hard part is picking the ones that still have features of interest.

I adore The Core: from the really exciting and well done shuttle landing through to the imagination of going TO the core, then... for me, the kicker was Stanley Tucci dictating his memoir, then... as he sits, alone and silence, contemplating his fate... he comes to a realisation. THAT moment MADE the movie for me. It's a brilliant little character beat.

The King Kong film is one of the only one that uses the M 114 APC. (Around the time I saw it, I got reassigned to a Kasern in USAEUR that had an Engineer Kasern adjacent that had a collection of older Engineer Equipament, including an M 114. Only time I ever saw one in person.)

I just watched Green Lantern based on your recommendation, and yeah! I think it totally doesn't deserve its reputation as a turkey. It's good entertainment and doesn't pretend to be anything more than that.
It came out three years after the MCU burst forth in cinema. That raised people's expectation for superhero flicks.
David Lynch's Dune would have been great, regardless of whether if followed Frank Herbert's books or not. Unfortunately, the studio management hadn't apparently watched Eraserhead and got cold feet prior to the film's completion. The cuts of the film with some of the found missing scenes are a bit better. The weakest part of the production was the spacecraft scenes, the technology for doing that wasn't ready yet. The rotoscoped armour technique seems a lot better than the rather generic approach used in the modern version. José Ferrer might be considered a good choice for the role of Emperor, in that he represented the old ways. The Empire clinging with a death grip to power, while the rest of the galaxy sought control. Anyway, if the studio had let Lynch have his way, I'm sure the final result would have blown everyone's mind, whether anyone could have understood it or not.
I would've love to have seen Jodorowski's Dune. That sounded mad AF.
@@terrytalksmovies I imagine some of the technical aspects would have been monumental to overcome. As I recall, some of the storyboarding for that project would have amounted to a film costing billions, adjusted for today's equivalents.
The battle for control of "Dune' was less between the Harkonen, The Fremen, the Emperor and the Atreides family, than it was between David Lynch and Dino De Laurentiis. Though I'm sure it's a work experience neither would want again, the emotions it evoked in Lynch have helped inspire a great deal of his work post "Dune" and you can see it filter into everything from "Blue Velvet" to "Lost Highway" and "Mulholland Drive". I think working on an epic studio production like "Dune" taught Lynch that he would never lose creative control to another, ever again.
@@terrytalksmovies ooh yes me too...and i still haven't seen the documentary thats been made about it. Given his success also as a comic book writer ("The Incal") i wonder if anyone would ever consider an animated "Dune" series by Jodorowsky, though I suspect any Dune production is going to be many years into the future ..at least that which isn't a direct sequel/chapter based on Denis Villeneuve's version.

'The Core' came out a few years after the "collation of the willing" in the Iraq war.
Was watching 'The Core' for the first time with some mates and when the countries got together to help the project he said....
"Oh look... A collation of the drilling"....

Hey Terry. Good list of some classics. I love The Incredible Melting Man. You’ve got to love a mission to Saturn, an astronaut returned to earth but melting and the finale where our hero literally melts in a back alley before he’s mopped up and put in a bin. Roll the credits.. King Kong lives is great I’m a sucker for matte paintings and old school special effects like that. Kong munching on crocodiles.. 👍
Yep King Kong Lives has a retro feel, even for the time in which it was made.
Plus it has a "blink and you miss it" Linda Hamilton nude scene. (I freeze framed my VHS copy).

i would argue that these films are "Bad", but i do kinda know what ya mean...and yeah, why turn ones own brain off for that? ..if it were even possible! The Tarantino action figure is hilarious!! You could pose it onto a life size ladies mannequin foot...he'd like that!! I can understand the "bad" part though when it comes to sophistication of the science fiction ideas at play. I think the only one of these i haven't seen (or got) is "King Kong Lives". "King Kong in a Coma" made me instantly start humming "Girlfriend in a Coma" by The Smiths!! it sounds fun! in fact, i got enjoyment out of all of these films and appreciate that they were more visceral fun than cerebral. Frank Henelotter is one of my cinematic heroes and good to see you highlight his films. Last I heard of his film connections though was helping source music and public domain clips to be used in John Water's "A Dirty Shame". Oops i spoke too soon. A quick look on Imdb and it turns out he made a film in 2008 called "Bad Biology", plus some interesting looking documentaries.
Mojo Nixon's version of Girlfriend In A Coma is much better.

I went to see 'Escape to LA' at the Odeon in Nottingham with my bezzie when it was released.
Everyone came out grumbling with faces like thunder, muttering about what a pile of old poo it was.
Apart from me.
I had the time of my life!

Escape From LA has the best nihilistic ending of any movie.
The Spicediver Edit is the best way to see Lynch's Dune. I particularly like it in high contrast monochrome. Then it's even more Lynch and the poorer quality reintroduced deleted scenes sit better. At the Earth's Core supposedly started life as the 3rd Daleks movie based on the Doctor Who story The Chase. It certainly feels like a Doctor Who scenario.
I don't think Dune is a bad movie. The theatrical cut is a bad cut of a good movie.
If you want high contrast monochrome, the second Denis Villeneuve Dune movie has it in spades.
@@terrytalksmovies I think that is partly an homage to Lynch. Lynch wanted to make the first book into two movies and release them with a year gap. He also toyed with the idea of releasing them in monochrome like his two previous hits. Dino took the film away from him.

I'd love to see another of these with older movies. Dune is also a more-or-less favourite of mine, so much potential lost.I was expecting to see you mention John Carter, very much a favourite that has a worse reputation than it should.
I don't think John Carter was a bad movie, it was just screwed up by the suits.

Planet Terror is a great "bad movie. " One of my favorite. I wish Green Lantern could have done better - the comic was one of my favorite. But I can see how they bit off more than they could chew. Dreamscape was fun and cheesy. Oh Brain Damage! I love the crossover with Basket Case. At The Earth's Core is a fun one. Henry Silva in BS or Not is SO prescient. 😊
I really want to see the Nathan Fillion Green Lantern in the new Superman movie, too.
Planet Terror is a great film. It's made by film makers who love film making, and made for movie fans who enjoy flims.
Unfortunately a lot of the potential audience didn't get the vibe.
I hate movies that are so pretentious that it is virtually impossible to understand what the story is about, what the people are saying. Sometimes they even whisper to make it even harder for viewers to make sense of it all. For example The Matrix Resurrections and Tenet. Our appreciation of movies differs from person to person. All subjective. Personally, I prefer David Lynch's Dune more than Denis Villeneuve's Dune. The former captures Frank Herbert's mood better IMO
I like Denis' version better. BTW, I once met Frank Herbert. Polite, shy man but also a hell of a writer.
Frankenhooker is one of the most memorable movies I have ever seen. I can not recommend it enough. If any of you haven't seen it before, find it and watch it as soon as you can

I agree that the Original Dune wasn't great, but at least it was more faithful to the novel than the latest adaptation. In the Blu-Ray version, it was even more faithful when it showed Paul's fight with the Fremen Jamis and what happened to Thufir Hawat. I miss second-run movie theatres too. Great way to spend a weekend...
For most of my youth, second-run cinemas were all I had. Had to travel 30 kilometres into the city to find a first run fleapit.
@@terrytalksmoviesFor me it was the reverse. I had to commute to go to the Theater of the Living Arts (TLA).Worth the trip though. Especially Rocky Horror and Harlan Ellison's "A Boy and His Dog."
Yes, yes, do the old ones. Glad you ended with "Amazon Women on the Moon". The late night movie borrowed heavily from "Queen of Outer Space". The commercials are reminiscent of those on late night television at the time. The man without soul commercial string is funny. My wife didn't understand what was wrong with the songs. A different culture thing. I tought about this when I heard a woman from the same culture sing "Lean on me". The singer was talented, song sung with precision, but no soul.
Getting BB King to do the ad for Don No Soul Simmons was genius.
I will insist (at home, of course) that Gamer be played in conjunction with Law Abiding Citizen. Silly, OTT madness! Gamer, like Knowing, was shot on the Red camera, and that was the reason I attended to them. My youngest insisted on seeing The Core (sure... why not?) so I saw it at the cinema. I have actually seen quite a few of these, usually on release. Thanks! Grand fun.
The Core is such a groovy movie. It should get more love.

I'm pretty sure Michael Moorcock did the adaptation from ERB book to screenplay for "At the Earth's Core." Great Summer movie to take a young teen to! (Back in the day.)

On CZcams , this is what John Carpenter gave a movie fan at some convention when the fan trashed his Escape From LA movie -🖕 and I would agree .
It's entertaining and has a killer ending.
While it's not a perfect I enjoyed Green Lantern. There is a DC animated film, Green Lantern: First Flight, that is much better and really should been the script for this movie. I totally agree with you about Mark Strong. If they follow through with the character in the new continuity, I hope they remember him. That was perfect casting.
I loved the costumes, set designs & old practical effects of Lynch's Dune. I think they put so much voice over & narration in it because if you haven't read the book the story is a bit confusing. It's still one of My favorites.
There are a few animated Green Lantern movies. The DC animated flicks really hit well.
Yes, you're right. Not turn off your brain but get into a different mental state. I recall a network executive cancelling Police Squad because "you had to pay attention to it." The assumption being people only half watch their TV. I never did. Planet Terror is trying to be bad, I don't think it's bad. I sas disappointed that Grindhouse flopped I had a ball watching the 2 films and the fake trailers (most of which are now real films). Lynch's Dune did get me to read the novel after, it's a flawed film but not unwatchable like the critics said at the time. Even though Escape from LA has better action scenes, still like NY a bit better. Dreamscape was the poor man's Inception at the time. Loved Amazon Women on the Moon, all those women warriors running in high heels to catch the good guys. In the Airplane/Naked Gun type of film from the 80s. Is the extended edition of Green Lantern worth it?
My take is that if you get the chance and you want to rewatch Green Lantern, go the longer version. You've seen the other, so you can compare and contrast.
The "clean" version? Who da hell ever wants the clean version of anything, unless it's a movie about cleaning?
Green Lantern was awful, but it pure eye candy. Give the ol' OLED a real workout :D
There are several Green Lantern animated features, if you like the character, they're great.
I figured out The Clean Version. It's without the scratches and skips that were put on the media to emulate an old movie print.

At the Earth's Core had some people who knew how to act in movies. Doug McClure was not a great actor but he was a personable leading man and was believable in his narrow niche: a guy who was outside hie experience but coped. Carolin Munro was not a great actress but was attractive and likable (even when playing a bad guy). Peter Cushing was a gifted actor who could find an interesting character even in bad scripts.
The perfect trinity of bad movie wonderfulness. 😀
I really enjoyed PLANET TERROR, and felt Rodriguez "got" what the assignment was more than Tarantino did-who did a Tarantino movie, basically.
I also had a soft spot for KING KONG LIVES, and I don't think Linda Hamilton was "wasted" so much as she was given a chance to stretch as an actor after THE TERMINATOR.
GREEN LANTERN...never worked for me, because I never believed Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan (too bad, given how great he is as Deadpool!). Bradley Cooper, who director Martin Campbell wanted, would have been the better choice, seriously. The effects work was also really bad, as you've already said.
I would've loved to see Nathan Fillion in the role, like the fake GL trailer did-or failing that, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, or Idris Elba as John Stewart...maybe Jeffrey Wright if you wanted an older GL. Yes, Mark Strong's Sinestro is a highlight-so much so I didn't want him to turn evil, because he had that perfect Tough-but-Fair Trainer thing going, and given how Reynolds played Hal you can hardly blame Sinestro for constantly being on the verge of wanting to wash him out of the Corps!
The Fillion GL will definitely be fun. I'm looking forward to the whole James Gunn DC Universe.
Hello Terry! Another fun video. I have one criterion for potentially bad or silly sci-fi or horror or what have you. Setting / world building. If the film makers can make me think that the goofiness makes sense in world - they have me. You look a bit chilly. It is 34C where I am. I have been sticking to the furniture all day. Cheers!
I'd love 34 degrees. We're getting one or two in the mornings and our houses aren't designed for the cold.
I still remember the real bad “At the Earth's Core” (1976). The concept was great. Best part was the fabulously sexy Caroline Munro. I had first seen her in Ray Harryhausen’s “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad” (1973).
The Sinbad movies are my least favourite Harryhausen flicks. The actors never had any charisma.
@@terrytalksmovies I found Harryhausen’s Sinbad movies very entertaining with the monsters and evil characters. However, I think his best movie was “Jason and the Argonauts” (1963). Top notch!
Fully agree that you don't turn off your brain to enjoy such movies. The film-critical brain can have a great time. I'm fond of silly Italian Hollywood rip-off sci-fi of the '70s and '80s, esp. their Mad Max ones. And in that tradition, a sweet batch of post-apocs were produced in the Philippines, some starring the legendary Richard Norton.
Also, Philippino horror movies, Hong Kong horror flicks, Indian science fiction. A different mode is required but never turning your brain off.

Confession: I really like Green Lantern in the comics. John Broome/Gil Kane stuff from the 1960s . . . .
Yep. Gil Kane is my go-to Green Lantern artist.
Lynch's Dune has it's good bits. Considering how small the special effects budget was they are awesome. If there is one thing that stands out for me is the set design, it's not the high-tech look a lot of movies of the era were putting out.
The Guild Navigators were disturbingly wonderful.
I've seen the 1984 Dune in three versions (theatrical cut, "Alan Smithee" cut, and a "restored" version made by someone who took all the available footage from DVD and put all the cut footage back in), and I cordially despise it in every version. I don't find anything of value in it at all, and I don't think anything can be done to make it good except burning every negative and positive print of it and starting again from scratch. Mind you, I also have issues with the source material so I am probably doomed to not like any film version of it...
The new movies are superb from my POV. The changes from the initial text are minimal and IMHO they strengthen the story.
I really like “Dune” (1984) a lot. There are several versions. One is the standard version. My preferred version was edited by the producers with additional footage and descriptions. Lynch disowned that and instead the director is a fictitious Alan Smithee. Wish the producers had gone with Lynch’s original 3 hour cut instead of the butchered 2 hours. Great soundtrack by Toto.
I'm not a fan of the soundtrack. It sounds really dated now. It's always a red flag when there are multiple versions of movies.
@@terrytalksmovies Regarding multiple versions… It depends. Sometimes the original vision / cut by the director doesn’t make it to theaters. Sometimes the Director’s Cut is a better version. For instance, all 3 LOTR movies were improved with the Extended Cuts.
Dreamscape and Inner Space both have Dennis Quaid and seem like doppelganger movies.
Dennis Quaid didn't hit his stride with science fiction until Enemy Mine.
@terrytalksmovies Enemy Mine is good story. Inner Space is more comedy but I love the casting with Martin Short, Kevin McCarthy, and Vernon Wells.

Peter Cushing stole At The Earth's Core. Yeah, dumb movie... but like you said, FUN!
Like Planet Terror, but thought Deathproof was too slow.
Dune is still one of my faves... don't think of it as a bad movie.
Amazon Women on the Moon was fun... wasn't it a sequel to Tunnelvision? Or Kentucky Fried Movie... something like that.
The best part is that there were movies like Voyage to the Planet of the Prehistoric Women that the movie mocks.
Amazon Women was in the same genre as those others. All of them are great fun.

@@terrytalksmovies - It's an odd movie, harking back to those (and I love them deeply) Doug McClure movies of the '70s and '80s, but with the sense of wonder that movies like 'The Time Machine', 'Mysterious Island', and of course, 'Journey To The Centre Of The Earth' carry with them. Great cast - the always great Delroy Lindo is almost unrecognisable until he speaks - lovely set pieces: the birds falling out of the sky sequence is both chilling, and spectacular at the same time.
It's batshit crazy, the whole thing, but it's a really good excuse to turn off and have a bit of fun for a couple of hours. That's one of the reasons cinema exists - to have fun. Sadly, critical mauling didn't take long to kick off, with some people bothered that every movie had to have 'meaning', and the fun ones that the Hoi polloi enjoyed were somehow worthless.
Whatever, 'The Core' is a hoot, from start to finish.

I know "unobtainium" is just a macguffin, but do you remember (off the top of your head) when the word was used in an earlier film? Not arguing, just coming up empty. . .

That's why I like the Sun Cinema in Yarraville. Old school fleapit renovated into eight boutique fleapits. It's a perfect cinema environment for me.
Thank you... another fun list. A movie that uses the 3D process in a clever and entertaining(and gross) way is Jackass 3. Many of John Carpenter's best movies didn't find an audience until they were released on VHS. I agree Escape From LA is the better movie. 💀🔫☢🙃
Escape From LA also has that perfect nihilistic ending.
I've always been a fan of the Silver Age Green Lantern. I can believe that self-medication helps Dune 1984. Finally, I would still love to see a double bill of The Core and Crack in the World. Thanks, Ter.
A small movie about the Alan Scott Green Lantern might be interesting.
"Brain Damage" is one of those movies I think about every few weeks. Not a great movie, but a surprisingly good metaphor for drug abuse/addiction.
I'm sure the analogy was deliberate, too. Hennelotter's a smart guy.

As much as love John Carpenter movies, I can't bring myself to like Escape From LA. I saw it in the cinems with a fwllow Caprenter fan and we both thought it was terrible. I've seen again since and that view still holds

David Lynch's Dune is a good movie IMO. Better than the more recent movies, and actually does a better job of capturing the feel of the book.
Fair enough. But trying to cram Dune into one movie was always a difficult task.

Dreamscape is a good movie. Elm Street stole its thunder.
Elm Street leaned in to the horror much more than Dreamscape did.

@terrytalksmovies when my niece was working at a theater, she gave me the movie poster of slither I got both formats DVD and Blu-ray I loved the movie too, wish they would make a sequel. The director put the aliens in slither in another movie. Believe it or not it was Guardians of the galaxy. They were in a cage....

I hated Escape From LA. Way too campy compared to Escape From NY which was more dark and and scary in the classic John Carpenter style. And just as an aside, as an American I'd much prefer to have the Cliff Robertson character be our President as opposed to the current Dementia patient wandering aimlessly about the White House hallways. Just saying...
