On the cusp of World Cup qualification for the first time in 36 years, Canada are steadily growing in stature in football. Alphonso Davies won the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2020, while star striker Jonathan David is one of the hottest forwards on the market and has been linked with Arsenal, West Ham, and Liverpool at just 22. But what has changed to improve the nation’s talent production? Can they overtake the USA and Mexico? And who are the next exciting prospects worth watching out for? On today’s EFD Explained, we’re trying to answer those questions. Let us know what you think in the comments.

I'm a Bayern fan, and I decided to watch some of Canadas games with Alphonso Davies, and they are fun to watch. I even then watched some of their games recently when Davies was out for a while, and find myself routing for them. Looking forward to watching them at the world cup.

As a Mexican supporter. It has been shocking how far Mexico is dropping and how much the USA and Canada are looking like the real deal. I think it has to do a lot with the MLS vs Liga MX. So many young Mexican prospects never leave Mexico because they are paid extraordinary wages and would rather stay in their comfortable lifestyle in Mexico, or they don't leave because the Mexican club owners ask for ridiculous fees for any of their rising stars. Whereas Canada and US are CONSTANTLY sending youngsters out to Europe. And it's fair to say that if you are training in Europe at a young age, you're going to be a better player than if you stay here in Mexico or US.

Excellent video, thank you guys for covering our beloved country! Crazy how far we've grown since I started following the team (and the sport in general) in 2012.
Unfortunately Scotty Arfield doesn't play for us anymore (he hasn't for a few years now,) but we have a new CM now who's even better. Stephen Eustaquio is already one of the best midfielders in the region and is only getting better. Recently made a high profile move to Porto, he hasn't played much and when he has played for Porto he's been mediocre but there's always an adjustment period, I think Porto fans will see what an absolute gem they have on their hands next season.
When I first started watching this team, a third guys were free agents and a bunch came from really obscure leagues like Malaysia, Lithuania, Israel, 3rd divisions in Germany and Spain. If you were a regular starter in MLS you were basically a lock to get called up, in fact our national team probably would've lost to most MLS teams 10 years ago. Now there are a ton of guys playing important, regular roles in MLS and cannot get a sniff. When Junior Hoilett first broke through Canada had to beg him for about 6 years before he finally agreed to play for us in 2015. At the time it was huge, he was immediately our best attacking player by a mile. Now, while he's still an important player and imo is still very talented, he is very clearly a bench option when everyone is available.
I love talking about this team and could literally go on for hours and hours. A 9 minute video is nowhere near enough time to describe the entire picture but I think EFD did a great job summarizing everything and I think I speak for all Canadian EFD followers when I say I really appreciate you taking the time to talk about us.

Hockey has become insanely expensive to play. The equipment needed to play costs thousands of dollars let alone playing fees, travel and tournament costs etc.. I used to play AAA hockey in the 90s which is the highest youth level in Canada and there's less teams now than when I used to play. If I was growing up these days I would've played football/soccer or basketball due to cost alone.

The sign up rates for hockey in canada with SOOOO many single parent families in this broken family society (and rising inflation) has more parents putting their kids into football/soccer or baseball ($100 for the summer) vs Hockey ($500 in equipment, $2000 if youre a goalie like I was.. and then $500 in league fees for houseleague, and $2500-10000 for Travel hockey depending if you played A, AA, or AAA... As Canada's demographics continue to change, and as hockey culture continues to be very unwelcoming to ethnic minorities, you are going to continue to see this decline. Just look at the crowd difference at Maple Leaf Square when the Raptors or Leafs play. One crowd is an almost perfect reproduction of the city of Toronto's current demographic makeup, and the other looks like the demographics of Toronto in the early 90s. All the kids played it on the school ground the whole school year, yes even in the snow when it was -40 outside. Lots of students played in soccer leagues during the summer break from school. I did too for 2 years I actually didn't even know how to play soccer when I signed up, but all the kids were doing it and I decided to give it a try. I sucked at it and was terrible at sports but you never know until you try. I just hope this recent success in soccer will keep building and not fizzle out in a couple years.

I think the success of MLS in the last 15 years has had a big impact. It's more stable now and they are making teams that get lots of fans so far less teams folding. Three teams in Canada focused on youth development of homegrown Canadian/US players has massively helped. The stability of MLS financially means players are consistently if slowly improving. Canadian teams also have to have a certain amount of Canadian players. This means the quality of the average player has steadily improved. You've seen similar effect in the US where MLS may not have make the next Messi but it's made the "worst guy" on the national team a much more seasoned pro with a lot of quality experience.

MLS and the move to develop and sell players to Europe is a huge factor. You will also have a fair number of Canada-raised dual nationals who will go to Europe as soon as they can, skipping a pro contract here. The CPL is a good development pipeline, but the bulk of the top players that move on transfers are going to be from the 3 Canadian MLS squads (and from some of the US-based teams, though the numbers aren't going to be very high). Because Canada is a smaller country compared to the US, they are going to be reliant on recruiting the overseas-based dual nationals to complement the locally-developed players.

I spoke with a guy who ran an academy and John has had monthly zoom calls for the last several year implementing standard training techniques, terminology to be implemented at all levels going down to kids age 7 and 8. He's laying a foundation and putting an effort into improving the football at all levels. Academy directors work with local soccer associations to provide detailed and standardized coaching clinics which are critical when you have a million kids playing and many of the coaches and volunteers won't have the knowledge of how to develop kids. These volunteers that don't footballing knowledge have access to standardized coaching clinics to teach them how to work with kids even if they haven't played football growing up as many of Canadians haven't.

MLS played a major role in Canada's growth while the Canadian FA spearheading growth with the founding of the Canadian Premier League and a restructure of the lower divisions that looks to almost mirror Belgium's division system. By doing that, that could and should increase the quality of Canadian players, coaches and trainers going forward in heights that can potentially compete against CONCACAF's two strongest leagues long term. Hopefully with Canada in the FIFA World Cup that they could see a massive increase in the sport's popularity that benefit their domestic league's growth and stability for the sake of their country's players, coaches and trainers. As much as those three MLS Canadian teams have benefited Canada, it still not enough to grow the sport for a whole country long term. Hopefully the revamped Canadian division structure works out. I'm glad they are sticking to a division structure instead of copying the USA franchise structure. Stick to what the elites use, not the experimental franchise structure that produced hardly anyone good compared to the college to pro era that gave us Donovan, Dempsey, Tim Howard and Beasley.

i think the internet is helping the new growth in canada: my favourite sport has always been cricket, but, of course, there was no tv or radio coverage or newspaper mention in canada; i had to settle for cfl, nhl and baseball. it wasn't until the internet came along that i was able to start watching and reading about cricket again, and i suspect the same is true for football fans newly arrived in canada before the 1990s. now there's no need for them to follow/invest in sports in canada or usa when they can find coverage of all their favourite sports online these days. more important, they can expose their canadian children to them, not as mere cultural facets, but as meaningful pursuits. i can watch cricket all night now; the only sports leagues on the continent i pay even one second of attention to are cfl and, now, cpl.

To think that Canada's most vital losses were Jonathan de Guzman and Fikayo Tomori after Hargreaves and Begovic weren't available, they did a really good job.

One clarification on Jonathan David's background. JD was born in Brooklyn, but only spent 3 months there before moving to Haiti, living there for over 6 years. Thereafter, he moved to Ottawa, Ontario, honing his talents and skills as a youth there before moving onto Europe. The video made it sound like JD spent 6 years or so in the US before moving to Canada. That isn't the case at all.

Davies and David are obvious stars. Larin needs a move from Besiktas. Buchanan is off to a great start at Club Brugge. Adekugbe at Hataspoyor is ready for a bigger club. Eustaquio now at Porto not getting many minutes but wait, he will. Nottingham Forest have no idea what they have in Laryea, they out to try playing him. The 3 MLS teams all feature good Canadian players and have academies playing in the USL. There is also the new Canadian Premier League. Keep your eyes open for Ismael Kone (CF Montreal), Nobello and Nelson on Toronto FC, Gutierrez on Vancouver and most of all the youngest of these teenagers Jakele Marshall-Rutty (17 years old) who looks like he is Alphonso Davies 2.0. We need some Centre Backs. Tomori should leave England where he won't play and play for Canada as he is eligible!

The Canadian Soccer League is a major change. Canadian development was corrupt for so long and out money first so only rich kids would get a chance despite the fact that they were easily the worst demographic. Glad things are finally shifting. It hurt us for too long

It's still pretty fucking corrupt, the CPL and new semi pro teams give open trials but good luck on otherwise lmao so expensive

As an England supporter I would only want to meet Canada in the final. I'd love to see them turn over many 'bigger' teams, just not us. My only advice is that they change their strip to all yellow - because they're the biggest potential banana skin in the Finals.
