Also, took the suggestions from another video, with cold temp, started truck and let set for 5-10 seconds, shift into drive and drove with light throttle while going through the gears then slowing down to a stop going through the gears. When temp reach 160 used med. throttle and did the same, up through all the gears and down through all the gears. Gears 1 to 10 now shift smoothly through all of them up and down. Just did mine, 2020 ranger xlt, cleared it and shut truck off. Drove it around for about 20 mins and the clunking is gone (hard shift into 4th gear and clunk up hill in downshift from 6th to 5th) huge difference in how the transmission responds, and I definitely like the outcome. Hopefully it stays this way for a while. Was planning on doing more with FORScan but unfortunately due to the war right now you're unable to purchase the extended licenses (trial still works I do believe) thanks! Saves me from going to the dealer!
Just watched a video of a dude with this truck who went back and forth with the dealer until they told him we can reset the adaptive learning data AND TURN OFF future learning. Apparently it a simple setting that just takes a second in the software. It fixed his problems as well.. I am shopping these trucks now and learning about these issues before making my choice. Leaning towards 2017 F150 5.0L with the 6 speed tranny..
I’ve got a 2018 3.3l with the 6 speed. In my experience and from what I’ve hear the 6 speed is definitely the route to go and as far as the 5.0 the only big issue I’ve seen is they do burn oil but that is not the end of the world. For my purposes the 3.3 does just fine.
there is a learning procedure from ford for this, i work on them all the time and the learning procedure helps it so much more than just resetting it. reset it then drive it through all the gears ensuring it shifts between 1500-1800rpm and then lightly brake and allow it to shift down all the gears. then you use the shift lever to perform a sequence with the shifter. alot of the time it will skip second, that is normal. do this 6 times then it should help it alot
In doing research on this for my 2019, I have found also that the Mustang 10 speed and outside of Ford, the 10 speed in the Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra have the same exact issues. Apparently there is class action lawsuits around both Ford and Chevy.
I would strongly recomend turning off the adaptive tables and give it a try. The transmission works so much smoother in all aspects. You can always turn the adaptie tables back on.
Thanks for the video, I traded in my ram 1500 for a 2019 3.5 EB with the 10 speed and started to hate the way it drove about 2 days later. I was getting rough shifts up and down, also had a constant jerk while cruising at 45mph like it didn’t know what gear to be in. I got forscan and reset the adaptive tables and that did nothing. So I went back the next day and reset the PCM and TCM. That made a world of difference and it’s about 90 percent better. The truck is actually enjoyable to drive now.
@@georgiaboy3003 He blew it up during a full throttle shift, it chirped 2nd hard and when it hit 3rd gear, the trans grenaded. It was unreal. Anyways, I was with him when it happened and he wound up replacing the transmission with a new 10R80.
After watching this video I reset the adaptive tables and drove my truck for a day. The transmission seemed to be working better overall. I then decided to turn off the adaptive fuction to the transmission all togather and found the transmission performace was greatly improved. The shifting was smooth and positive especially when driving around town.. The engine did not feel as it was bogging down due to the transmission shift so much smoother.
Thanks for the video. One (1) would think that a car assembled later (8/2018) would have the updated software ability versus one (1) assembled earlier.
Just got a 2021 F150. I find when it's downshift from 20mph to a stop sign I feel subtle jerking. It's not intense but annoying enough. Also can feel shifting on acceleration. Nothing intense but I never noticed it on any other car that I have driven before. I got the same exact story from the tech at Ford just like you said. I appreciate the video and may have to try this. Was so excited to get my first F150 but so far disappointed with the feel of the ten speed.
@@Chase-vl9cp I did get Forscan. I reset the adaptive tables but I don't notice a change. Im 7k in and I think I'm getting used to it. I definitely notice at times. It's just not smooth. It's less annoying after a while.
How long does it take for the truck to be done "relearning"? My dealership has done so many relearns and telling me I have to drive it like 1500kms that they're just trying to mile out my truck so it is out of warranty and they don't need to fix the actual problem. So how many kms does it take to actually relearn so I can say look it's still doing it, fix it properly.
They did my 3.5TT 10 speed tsb which reset the phazers and trannie, it worked for a few month but trannie back to thumping in 5th and eight, and shift harder in sport mode. Do you know how to turn off the adaptive shift mode?
I thought I had low transmission fluid because it almost felt like it was slipping going from 1st to 2nd, got the transmission fluid changed and it was still doing it. I found out about adaptive learning and turned it completely off. Drives like a dream now.
Hi, I have a 19 mustang with the 10speed. I was thinking of turning adaptive learning off completely as well. Have you had any issues with it shifting and did you have to go through any kind of learning process like they say. Also did the change in turning it off stay or did you have to redo it again?
@@user-bk5ey9ws5g if you reset the adaptive learning, you will have to go through a learning process. I think it’s like 2 or 300 miles? Don’t quote me on that. But if you turn it completely off, it’s just a normal transmission that’ll shift the way the factory programmed it too. I haven’t had any issues shifting after I turned it off. But before, I thought I was gonna lose 2nd gear because it felt like it was slipping so much

First, this issue is not limited to 10 speed auto trans. Mine is 2014 F150 King Ranch 4x4 with 3.5 eco boost. I do not pull trailers. I see this only at low speeds (parking lots). My dealer in JAX FL had it for 8 weeks. Gave it back to me still has same issue. The issue is not consistent. I can go months with no hard shifts then drove over a speed bump at 5 mph and BOOM! I have the 6 speed auto. It does have the trailer management system, but I don't pull trailers.
Thanks for the video. I want to try this on my 2020 edge st. I got the exact bs explanation from the dealer you described. Well worth the cost to try. It will be 150 to 200 bucks to evaluate. They will not even do the TSB without it, and if they deem it unnecessary, they charge you and do nothing. Just curious. Did this work for your truck?

Took mine to a shop and had them reset the TCM. Fixed problem on 2020 F150. Was slamming gears up and down so bad I thought I was going to destroy driveline. Problem stated at 20k miles. Dealer was absolutely no help. Wanted to keep the truck for a week. This video told me what to do even though I didn’t do it myself. Cost less than $100 bucks and was in and out in a couple of hours. Warning, you may need to educate the shop on what the situation is. Some shops didn’t want to do it or couldn’t. Disconnecting battery and other tricks on my own were no help. You need to clear or reset the TCM. Does not affect warranty.

I did something similar towing a u-haul while moving... accidentally drove on normal mode. Recently put the truck it into tow haul mode with my boat (16ft aluminum so light) and the gears were slamming like crazy on down shift. What do you use to connect your PC to the truck? And where did you get FORScan from? My dealership gave me the runaround too... 2018, XLT loaded and only has 25k miles. The truck shouldn’t be giving me any trouble.
You can get an adapter off of amazon. Just search for 'FORScan OBD2 Adapter'. There are several to choose from. They all do the same thing. Mine is the ELM327. The forescan is a free download. Just google it and you will see their website. They have a forum that has all the info you will need to get it downloaded and setup. Good luck. It is unfortunate that Ford hasn't come up with a software update to fix the issue. Especially considering Chevy trucks use the exact same transmission, but the software they developed has none of these issues.

From new it had hard shifts, clunking i/o of park, and trans shatter noises, etc. At 5,500 mi. after the dealer run around I replaced all fluids with Amsoil and cleared/retrained the trans programing and all better now +very enjoyable to drive. Also have a '21 F 250 7.3 gas KR w/10 R 140. Pretty much the same issues but more intense/loud/often. It also kept hanging in 5th gear (requiering throttle play to resolve) while in tow haul mode. Replaced all fluids w/Amsoil and cleared trans patters. After ~ 300 miles all good. It is a monster and not as enjoyable to drive as the 150 Platinum. No idea if both w/Amsoil or the reprograming did the tricks. Ron I have the same f150 as yours and I too have hang time between 3rd and 5th shift and clunking and weird shifting. What did you do to retrain/reset transmission?
I took both 150 and later 250 to dealer. I changed two variables so which or a combo resolved the issues or both I am unable to attest to ((AMSOIL trans. fluid and dealer reset of transmission shift profile to learning mode). On both, once reset to learning mode I was told to remain in Normal mode (no T/H or towing) and drive normally for 250 miles - not just highway. All got gradually better and after ~ 350 miles all resolved. Note: Amsoil low vis. trans. fluid is approved/backed by Amsoil for both the 10R80 and 10 R 140 10 speed transmissions. Ford will not comment other than if the Amsoil is found to have created a problem Ford will not back it. But, the operating temp vis. is higher than OEM Motorcraft ULV. I researched the heck out of this and went with Amsoil. If you go with Amsoil use your own judgement on which to loose. Maybe have dealer do reset and go thhough learning phase and if that does not work do a different trans. fluid (ull flush) and have them reset again. No big deal on reset it took max 10 min. The process/equipment for Ford 10 speed fluid changes must be done by Ford = equipment/temp ranges/etc. Not like the old days....

Do you happen to know if using forscan to do this void your warranty?
@@user-bk5ey9ws5g dont know. my car is off warrantee. I would just put it back to learning if you have to bring car in for warrantee work....Halt works great for over 50 days now
I just went from 30 inch stock wheels (17") to 33's on Limited 20" wheels. It used to look like a big truck with little wheels. Now it looks correct. But now the shift points feel a little late, more clunky. I am going to try this.
Just did mine. What a great fix!
7 months later?
Just did mine, 2020 ranger xlt, cleared it and shut truck off. Drove it around for about 20 mins and the clunking is gone (hard shift into 4th gear and clunk up hill in downshift from 6th to 5th) huge difference in how the transmission responds, and I definitely like the outcome. Hopefully it stays this way for a while. Was planning on doing more with FORScan but unfortunately due to the war right now you're unable to purchase the extended licenses (trial still works I do believe) thanks! Saves me from going to the dealer!
Thank you I have 2019 ford ranger And same problem got the fords scan waiting ob2 Amazon that need get :-) hope it fix problem

Does for scan have the ability to turn off adaptive learning completely. I thought you can only reset it.
Won’t it harm the transmission on the long run?
Thanks for the video, I traded in my ram 1500 for a 2019 3.5 EB with the 10 speed and started to hate the way it drove about 2 days later. I was getting rough shifts up and down, also had a constant jerk while cruising at 45mph like it didn’t know what gear to be in. I got forscan and reset the adaptive tables and that did nothing. So I went back the next day and reset the PCM and TCM. That made a world of difference and it’s about 90 percent better. The truck is actually enjoyable to drive now.
I can’t find the TCM …. Did you mean TCU?

Is this the same as "flashing" the TCM? Or is this "relearning"? Neither? Please let me know, thanks!
But before, I thought I was gonna lose 2nd gear because it felt like it was slipping so much
@user-bk5ey9ws5g I turned it off after reset. Been working great since I done it

There are updates i’ve had my truck at the dealership twice and both times they were able to clear and install transmission software updates the problem is ford is not reaching to the dealerships to tell them or the customers they just send the updates to the shop via internet so if they hook up your truck it will pop up on the scan tool that there is an update that’s the only way of knowing now if your dealership sucks that’s of no help my truck shifts a 100 times better but i still need my tables reset the mechanic states unhook battery to reset them you cannot do that to these trucks anymore it has its own built in involuntal if i said that right memory so unhooking the battery does nothing hope this helps some of you out how does one go about clearing the adaptive tables what equipment do i need what scan tool to plug in do i need besides a laptop could you fill me in on all of it please and thank you

What adapter did you purchase?

I have a 20 3.5 Eco F150 with 10R 80. Year, I know ULV and Amsoil trans fluds differ in some regards but I have been using Amsoil fluds for almost 20 years in cars and truck = never a proble,,, Wow went to Blistein 4600 shocks on the f250 = what an improvement in ride and controle over OEM!!!!!
Ron sounds like I’m gonna have some downtime ahead of me!
Your amsoil fluid change sounds like a great idea when I had my 17’ mustang gt the manual transmission needed the same thing done a fluid change to a better fluid which I switched it to royal purple at the time and it made switching gears ⚙️ night and day difference. Something about fords fluids just don’t really meet the demand of their products not sure if the engineers did that on purpose to make parts wear out faster? Which would sound about right haha
@@phishynate6053 Down time - for me it was one day in shop for each. Likley could have waited .... as they billed 1.25 hrs for fluid change and 15 min for reset.

My understanding is that doing that doesn't clear it, just like it doesn't clear any of the other settings that are programmed. I can't say for certain though.
After almost 2 months of waiting on Ford dealership to fix mine with 46K miles, I ended up trading it sight unseen on a Nissan Titan Pro 4X. Ford is getting covered up with these transmission issues. I traded mine on a Chevy. My Silverado has the same 10 speed transmission, but Chevy doesn't have shifting issues. Proof that it isn't normal and it isn't the transmission. Ford just can't get the programming right, and doesn't seem to be all that interested in trying.
