I never drove monsters like that, only played Snow Runner.😂
I have seen many people here who love Peterbilt,i saw one in a movie with Patrick Swayze, truck driver is a hard job.
My father knows many american classic trucks in south America from the 60's and 70's and he said Mack was the best and Ford was the worst.
He also mentioned White and International, also great but not in Mack's level.
With tech evolved today it could be just personal preference,in Europe Volvo is the best for everyone and Mercedes is a cancer.

The last Freightliner I bought was 2016 with DD15 and manual transmission.
I bought in 2017 with 206k miles and low engine hours because it has am APU since new. Since I got it I didn’t do anything to it other than oil changes and brakes.
I actually spent more money maintaining the APU than I spent on the truck.
I think Any newer Freightliner with low miles and engine hours with DD15 regardless of the kind of transmission is going to be good.

Former Freightliner Tech here. It honestly depends on the truck. I’ve seen some come in often with electrical nightmares, I’ve seen then only come in for PMs and not have any issues. Watch for the software update recalls and all other recalls. The most common is needing software updated or split pin bushings on the DT12 trans. We also had a truck come in at 120k miles that spun the main bearing. So it’s just luck of the draw.

The lumber yard my dad works at has two Mack's. (01 RD and 03 Granite) they are work horses. The only problem is the Granite. Sometimes it likes to throw a computer sensor problem. Nothing big, a seat belt warning comes on. And the RD is more comfortable but because it's lighter, it can't hull as much the Granite can. But both are very good and reliable. I highly recommend Mack.

It's got plenty of room inside, it's got a great ride quality the only issue I've seen is (keep in mind that I'm a local driver with day and night shift drivers, they run 24/7) after about 150,000 miles they have a lot of electrical issues. Mechanically they are sound. Worth a look. Not sure how much they are on the market. Mine avgs around 5-6 mpg

Also parts are readily available with service centers everywhere. Back up and running quickly. And yes, Freightliner make up 35% of the truck market so you will see them broken down or getting towed but you will also see a ton on the highway running.

Hey I just watched a video link I watched a lot of your videos I'm an experienced trucker I've driven pretty much every make model of truck out there to answer a couple of your questions to start off the new Kenworth and the new Peterbilts the 6 80s and the 5 79 are basically the same truck they're both manufactured by paccar Motors so they both ride pretty much the same you can get the same power plant which would be the paccar motor unless you went with a Cummins or an extreme Left Field Detroit which are Slim. The company I work for we primarily run nothing but Peterbilt their service department is absolutely hands down awesome dealing with a normal customer sometimes you will sit a little longer but it's rare for the truck to break down as far as Freightliner goes for me if I was to go over the road like you are that would be my pick for the simple fact of if they do break down you can bring them to a TA which is a certified dealer between Freightliner and Detroit you're not going to find any more room as far as the sleeper goes the Peterbilt and Kenworth of generally a lot smaller inside even the new ultraloft is smaller than the Freightliner inside great for one person but not for a team in my opinion Volvo very comfortable truck to drive extremely comfortable the biggest downfall to them is their huge electrical problems causes lots and lots of downtime which hits hard for an owner operator or lease operator now when you jump from the Volvo to a Mack you're basically dealing with the same company now Volvo purchase Mack Motors back in the mid-2000s so just like Western Star went to Freightliner Mack is now Volvo. Mac dealerships will service Volvos and Volvo dealership will service Mack. Now when you get down to International like your opinion that very plain Jane of a truck for as far as Prime goes with their spec. In my personal opinion with ProStar they turn on a dime and give you $0.09 change one of my biggest likes to that truck. but they live up to their nickname 13 letter shitt spreader. One of our drivers wrecked one of our Peterbilts and we had a ProStar for a short. Of time on a rental through Penske now it wasn't a bad truck as far as ride I'm used to shifting an 18-speed manual transmission so it wasn't bad jumping into that truck where it had an automatic in it it pulled pretty good for what it was we got it with 2300 miles on it we gave it back to Penske with a little over eleven thousand miles on it within that time it had numerous sensors go off in it that had to be replaced and a four-month Time. I currently Drive a 2019 Peterbilt 389 glider kit pushing almost 600 horse power is great if you're pulling super heavy loads I do a lot of oversized and heavy haul stuff low bed end dump trailers and so on with what you do as far as running the road Freightliner by far is one of the more efficient trucks on the road for fuel and nowadays that's where you're going to make your money is pinching the Pennies on the fuel. So JJ good luck in your adventures I enjoy your videos keep the rubber side down shiny side up driver

I have done much research on this lately due to I am going to choose a truck soon. I started with a Pete, because I too feel a bit battered from the rough ride of my 2019 Freightliners. I'm ready to ride more comfortably if possible. On the Pete, I was a little turned off about the interior livability, turning radius, and the price. Then moved to investigate the 2022 Kenworth T680, it's so sexy and claims to smash the Freightliner fuel mileage . And historically known for reliability and comfort, interior /livability seems better engineered than previous models. Then came the scare of the Def sensor mega shortage and parts problem..which makes me take a step back ....this is when I realize the Freightliner stand true and still easiest to get fixed and the DT15 is outstanding and American made right in Detroit Michigan where no one knows building motors better here in the US than the Motor City. And by design right now in 2021 is the leader in fuel efficiency and built aerodynamically to support. Ok , so.. I am ultimately ready to just change the seat in Freightliner asap. If I choose it, and if I decide to run out on the limb to put the new KW to the
Test....then I will order a lot of parts at the gate to make sure to carry them on me , just in case ...lol 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤

JJ I have a lot of respect for you I think you have a good head on your shoulders. I am a 20 year veteran driving a truck most of that I did hauling heavy equipment and car hauling. The best money I have ever made hands down was car hauling. I also have been a heavy diesel mechanic for several years.
So my experience is this first ride wise that has more todo with your wheel base total length then it does the type of truck. The shorter the truck the easier it is to maneuver but rough riding. The longer the wheel base the better the ride but harder to maneuver. Being a truck mechanic I can tell you all the frames on these trucks are about the same quality a peterbuilt will have the same kinda frame rails and axel components brakes ect.. as a freightliner, kenworth or any other our trucks breaks are built by bendix and Axels and drivetrain are all pretty much the same options.
So that begs the question still how do I pick the best truck? Ok so my last otr truck was a 2010 peterbuilt flatop carhauler peterbuilt is my preferred truck by far. So a freightliner condo is probably the tallest standup sleeper and has probably middle of the road creature cumforts.
Weastern star has the widest sleeper with the longest bed by far. Volvo is a super nice interior and one of the nicer interior I’ve been in lots of creature comforts. Now let’s talk peterbuilt and kenworth so a kenworth is a nice truck great quality interior great sound insalation and have that classic long nose look. Peterbuilt for me is top of the line class. So the quality of the interior is second to none the sound insulation top notch. Now if you jump in a Pete or a kenworth conventional truck it’s gonna take some getting used to especially if you’ve been driveing a freightliner or one of those slopenosed trucks. So let’s talk drive train so I am a catapiller and 18 speed manual gearbox kinda guy. My experience is the the Mercadies diesel is about the most underpowered unreliable engine out there and are fairly new on the American otr scene. Detroit and Cummins have stood the test of time and have proven to be pretty good engines. I have no idea about the automatic transmissions I have never driven one and if I have my way I will never drive one if I can keep from it..
The reason you are seeing the things that you are seeing with all the freightliner’s Volvo and westernstars and evening some of the newer Pete’s and kenworth is becouse the industry turned towards new truck drivers and ease of driving for a guy with 0 experience they are mass produced “fleet trucks” built cheap and fast to only have a life span of 5 or so years then they are literally falling apart.
In my humble opinion you need to go and buy a truck that you can spec out, outside of prime when you buy agin stay away from the fleet trucks and go to a more owner operator spec truck one with the gears you want that you can stretch out the legs and let her eat and still get good fuel mileage at 75 miles an hour the trucks you drive are geared out at 65 miles an hour if you buy your truck and have the govener taken off and open it up it will suck fuel down at 75 cause it is not geared for it. Hope this helps you

The cab & sleepers are made to be lived in & with the airliner air ride suspension system & air ride seat they were among nicest riding tractors I ever drove. Cummins engines were fine as long as they were not "gutted" (turned down.) DD Series 60 was also good engine once "bugs" were out of them. Peterbilt is definitely a better ride. The interior is a lot more fancy as well. The cat walk is actually functional. The freightliner has more storage. Peterbilt Definitely has a small refrigerator. The base freightliner doesn't come with the insulation package, so in cold or hot weather the cab gets either hot or cold fast. In the end, since I'm going to be doing a lease purchase the future value of the truck is important as well. I'm not familiar with the other trucks.

As far as a better ride you want to look at a truck with a wheel base around 270" to 280". Gives you a good ride and you can still get into tight places. As far as brands I would go with peterbilt. My grandfather had a 1985 peterbilt 359 that he put over 2,000,000 miles on before he retired.

When I was in school all we drove were freightliners. I do like the turn radius on them. Now as a company driver I'm in a automatic 2017 kw t680. Being company it doesn't have like any bells and whistles at all but it's a work truck. I did like that the jake brake was next to the steering wheel in the freightliners. In kw it's a button you have to reach over to push. That's nit-picking though. The ride is a lot better than a freightliner. I have had service done at the kw dealership and it was done fast. The only thing was the driver lounge was closed bc of covid so I had to sit outside in July in Tennessee for 9 hours. For my 2nd year I'd like to drive another kw, peterbilt, mack, lonestar, western star, prostar, or a newer and nicer cascadia as a company driver to see how they drive but not pay for them. As for buying one..it'd depend on finances mostly but probably a kw or peterbilt. Maybe a cascadia if it had only 1 previous driver who took care of it or new for a good price.

I was an owner operator for almost a year and had a KW T660 Studio sleeper. Almost put 225,000 miles on it before I turned in my key. Had a lot of good memories in that truck and a love hate relationship with it. Took my wife that I just got married too with me with me for 3 months stopped along the way and did some fun things like seeing Niagara Falls Dixie stampede. Got to take my dad with me for a week. Loved loved the big open space space with a sunroof bed big enough for me and my wife. It had a nice ride did a good job getting down the road. Now for the reason why I call them ken worthless And will never buy one again!! Let me 1st start by saying I've been doing this for 18 years and I've been around trucks long enough to know. That back in the day kenworth was the rose Royce of semi trucks!! If I could find one with a cat engine before Pac car came along with long nose that I could That I could do a full overhaul and restore the engine maybe I might try it. #1 I could count on spending A-day sometimes 3 days to get it fixed! #2 I could count on the AC needing to be fixed at least 1 time every year #4. There was the time in less than one year that the truck would not go any faster than 25 mph for almost 19 miles On the side shoulder of I 90 to get to a safe place. #5 I quickly learn some KW repair shops wood scam you and we'll never go back to them again. #6 The big one was the time I came back to the truck turn the key and all my lights inside and out start flashing and wipers came on intermittently on and off. It was the computer they tried to tell me lightning hit it. So I said OK show me the burn spot. That's a well it only has to be 50' away to mess it up. So I asked them OK so why Would my truck be the only one with that problem. And for every question they had an excuse because they are trying to get out of the warranty. Thank God the insurance paid the $15,000 bill the towing and the 4 days of downtime. So if you decide to go that route all I will say yes i wish you the best of luck!! Almost forgot to add I've driven both Peterbuilt and kenworth.i think kenworth turns worse than Peterbuilt

Volvo's are great trucks, they're reliable and comfortable. I know a lot of people that had great experiences with them and a few with horrible experiences. It all depends on how you maintain it. Are you putting synthetic engine oil? greasing your truck every month? Changing all the filters every year? It all depends on the maintenance, that goes for every truck but especially Volvo's. They rarely break down but if they do, get ready to pay double, sometimes triple the amount for repairs than a freighliner. I can't say much for the 2019-current model trucks but I own a 2017 Volvo 670 with 781,000 miles and the only major repair I made was a def pump ~$3500. Good luck and I hope everything goes well!

I drove for Prime for 4 years. I like the interior of the new cascadias but that’s it. I drove 3 freightliners and a 587 Pete for a year. I came in before they switched to automatics. The manuals drove a lot better than the automatics. The 587 was smoother but it had a MX-13 and I was in the shop at least twice a month. For OTR you’re not going to out perform or outlast a KW and some Pete’s depending on the engine. Freightliners are nice looking but they’re made cheap. In my opinion they’re throwaway trucks. Internationals I feel the same. There’s a reason Prime will almost give you a International for free. Look at the flat nose trucks there’s a reason KW and Peterbilt are still making them they last forever. Prime’s trucks have a worse ride also because they have super singles.

The reason you see freightliner is every where you look is because they are a budget truck. Like most budget deals they cut corners which results in more issues. Lots of plastic used instead of metal, looser tolerances, more chinese parts, etc. Hence the reason cheaper repairs. You are replacing cheaper equipment that simply will not last as long.

So here are some of my takeaways I'm relatively new got about a little over a year and at this point I've been with a few different companies and as far as new drivers it's not very likely a new driver will be able to get behind the wheel of a Peterbilt or a Kenmore generally speaking your newer drivers are going to be with a larger carrier larger carriers have a preference towards freightliners internationals and a little bit on the Volvo side. Now I have been in a Volvo day cab and I really liked it it does have a better overall cabin layout with plenty of cup holders available and power plugs lots and things the shifter being there at the seat it's kind of coin flip if the seat mounted shifter is any better than the color shifter I will say the Volvo that I was in did have an available performance mode where the freightliners do not or at least a freightliners I've been in it's pretty much just only going to be an economy mode
Of the sleepers I've been in it's been internationals and freightliners and I have been in day caps with internationals and freightliners there as well and overall the state and finish and quality control is a lot more problematic on internationals then what I found with freightliners.
I used to run day cab with us express and it was slip seat. And more often than not if there was a check engine light issue or an ABS light issue or any kind of General truck problem my experience was internationals were problematic to the point where I would specifically request one of the freightliners and didn't have nearly as frequent an issue with having to go back into the office and pick out another truck.
The international that I was issued with JB Hunt was brand new and it was okay it was it was an all right truck but overall the 2018 Freightliner that I'm currently in is leaps and bounds better than the international now granted it goes into how my company that I'm with now has the truck set up but I've been in freightliners with JB Hunt before and overall they're a little bit smaller and you definitely feel more cramps and the international then you do and a Freightliner and then again the whole fit and finish thing they feel cheaper because if I'm not mistaken an international truck is less expensive than a Freightliner Truck which is why they're so common among fleet use and you don't really see owner operators choosing to buy a new international.

So I have been on both freightliner and kenworth Yes the freightliner is a rougher ride ( shakeliner) but better storage and great Jake break. Kenworth has better fridge but Jake break take longer to engage. So I will stick with with my shakeliner. Freightliner turns better and is much better for a newer driver.

Me personally I Love my KW’s, always have since I was a kid but that’s just me. They ride Amazing, and looks are even Better but the turn radius sucks on it and I’m ok with that.

The longet wheel base will always make for a smoother ride when compared to a shorter wheelbase especially when all the other factors are the same. Peterbilt and Kenworth have better suspension options available. The company Peterbilt I am in now has the same wheelbase as all the other brands my company has, but the Peterbilts have better suspensions, which provides for a better ride.

I purchased a Pete with the Paccar power plant. Wanted a Manuel but ended up with the Auto. But to be honest I now love it. But to be honest most new Trucks are ok. But I will definitely replace this Pete with Another Plus It will have to have the Paccar power plant. And as for Expensive to repair. That has not been my experience, Paccar are not hard to work on. In fact I do as much repair work myself as possible and I find them really easy to work on. These Engines have been the Top seller in Europe for many many years.

For everyone not liking the harsh ride on the freightliners, you can soften up the cab airbags. Look right behind the outside of the cab and you'll see it. Take the rod of and adjust it shorter. It makes a world of difference. All trucks have this. You can adjust it firmer as well. I've noticed a lot of trucks out there with the cab sagging real bad and pointed this out, these guys were thrilled when I showed them how to quickly fix this. Just note that this will not help the harsh ride on the front axle. It only helps cushion the interior of the truck. Kinda give and take situation. If you let air out of the bags it'll be softer and smoother riding but likes to roll a lot. Add air to the bags will have less roll and feel more stable bit will beat the crap out of you. Got to find a happy medium I guess.

Great info John! I had no idea about this and we'll have some of my Freightliner buddies check it out.

@@JJtheTrucker it's very easy to find. It sits off center to the driver side a bit and has a plastic threaded rod on it. If you adjust this, keep in mind that it'll also move the angle of your headlights slightly. I'm OCD when it comes to having thing adjusted just right and the headlights are number one. Not only does a proper adjustment let you see better but most importantly your not blinding everyone and pissing them off. There are so many vehicles including trucks out there that need to adjust there's......... And maybe just maybe think about dimming there lights for others would be a great start. LOL

Volvo with a Warranty has my vote. That 860 sleeper and ride quality is best in class.
