This channel is a hidden gem ❤
Aw. Thank you. That means a lot.
Your work shows how people back in the 80s had to use a lot of creativity to overcome the limitations of the technology that was still in the early stages. We take everything for granted now. I don’t, actually, I grew up in the 80s and 90s😊
Yes, I really love having these limitations. Otherwise, sometimes I can't decide on an idea to begin with.
I discovered this channel through the Soundwave video and I gotta say this is such a cool and interesting place of the internet and I'm so thankful that I found it. Watching your videos truly gives me the same feeling as going into an art exhibition. It's so purely creative and fascinating. It's a crime that your channel doesn't have more followers, but at the same time, that kinda gives it a cool indie feeling. Idk just wanted to let you know that I think your art is very interesting and fascinating. :)
Thank you so much. That means a lot.
This is very interesting to see behind the scenes of! What a novel process in 2023. I have even more appreciation for it now.
Thank you : )
Your work sparks creativity. Awesome
Thank you.
Damn japhy this is amazing, glad to become part of this community!! This video made me want to do stuff with transparencies and high contrast matting! Looks so special!
Ooh, awesome. Please do, and then show me.
amazing
Came from the Picture from Soundwave vid. You got a new subscriber. 👍
Much appreciated.
It's criminal how few subscribers you have. I love the short but sweet style, it's awesome!
Thank you. I'm slowly on the rise I think.
Hope we see more stuff like this
Hopefully I'll get more jobs with clients that want similar aesthetics.
this is insanely impressive, especially in 2023. have you experimented between beta, vhs and 8mm? i feel like it would be interesting to experiment with each of those and see how unique of a result is created.
Thank you. While I do like the aesthetics of VHS/Beta, they'd make for lousy intermediate formats for a project like this. Keying would be much more difficult for instance. I still use VHS for some videos though at the very end of the project. VHS has a unique look because of how low the color resolution is. I don't currently have a Hi8 deck, but I loved that format growing up. They all kinda look the same, just different levels of horizontal resolution and noise.
limitations always bring the most interesting creativity out of people
i was trying to think how you made the video while watching it and the way you made it was even more interesting than what i thought
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed the process.
hey i just watched ceiling and i’m watching this rn and this is like so awesome!!!!! i really hope you upload something new at some point, if you’re feeling unmotivated i’ve felt that too. but just know this is like really cool!
Thank you. I'll upload more things when they're ready. I'm still motivated. A lot of my projects aren't videos, so they end up elsewhere.
@@japhyriddlegreat to hear :)
really fuckin cool
Thank you.
Analogue > digital. Always.
hi Japhy Riddle, I am a youtuber as well and I noticed your video with vhs generation loss, and I'm very intrigued. Is it possible to do it without a vhs recorder and like on a clip from my pc. Because I really would like to add effects like how you did when your turning the generation through your fingers like that to my videos just through editing. If its possible please let me know thank you.
I suppose it would theoretically be possible without the use of a real VCR, but it would be a huge undertaking to make it look like real VHS tape convincingly. You could try it with just one of those VHS filters and see if it looked good enough for your needs. Just keep running your footage through the filter over and over again, saving a different copy each time. The "degradation knob" thing can be done by just editing together tiny snippets of all those copies by brute force-one after the other, but it's gonna be an arduous process. With the software I used, it was as simple as keyframing a value a few times which determined which video clip would be used.
@@japhyriddle ok thanks , but is there any specific software, paid or not that was used because I really would love to try it out. If not is there any easier way to do it.
@@thatonemodder101 To automate the rapid switching between degraded clips for the knob turning, I used "Nuke" by Foundry. It's a high-level composting program-way overkill for something like this. I use it for all my VFX jobs. There are probably more accessible pieces of software that can assist with something like this, but I've never researched any other programs. After Effects probably lets you do something like this. But I don't know. I've never used it.
Ok thank you for responding to help me. I just hope someone creates like just a vhs generation loss plugin and I just put in a video and what generation I want and its done. I really am trying to get the AUDIO effect you get after like generation 4-5 cause its makes it louder but unable to gain. If you do know anything about the audio?@@japhyriddle
@@thatonemodder101 That's a good idea. Someone will probably make one someday. It is a popular effect these days.
For audio: Loss of high frequencies + clipping distortion + hiss + speed wobble. All these factors increase on each generation.
