it's amazing that the door guy will become the longest-serving talk show host in history.
he have 3 major show called Late Night with Shawn, Tonight Show starring Shawn & his current show on TBS, Shawn.

Johnny Carson aired for 30 seasons, longer than Conan
The fact that he had hosted SNL 5 times before Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Toy Story etc came out, is crazy to me.
Yeah, SNL is only 15 here. I wasn't watching during this time. If Hanks is such a big deal why wasnt he at the big 45!

i mean, i know this is before he got an oscar, but Tom Hanks was still pretty well known. He had been on Bosom Buddies, Splash, and he rose up the ranks significantly more after he got an oscar nod for Big.
It's hard to remember, but back in the 80s Hanks was known only for comedies, it's mostly why he popped up on SNL so much, if you can make people laugh you're more likely to get on the show. Wasn't until Philadelfia came out that he became more well known for his dramatic roles.

To those who are confused Conan wasn’t a cast member he was a writer. He was just an extra in this skit.

Conan had quite a few on screen appearances on SNL from like 88-90. But nobody knew who he was yet.

I think we can all agree that Steve Martin completely owns all of the 5 timers sketches.

It's funny to think that back then people would never have guessed that Conan would become one of the biggest best night talk show hosts.
Back then no one knew who he was.
It's a hell of a skit when Jon Lovitz, Conan O'Brien, and Ralph Nader are your BIT players.

it's just amazing to imagine a time when he was enough of a nobody that he wasn't explicitly playing himself, the way Lovitz was.
Vintage Oldies there’s a podcast called ‘Conan O’Brien needs a friend’ which he interviews a guest per episode. Sometimes they talk about the times in which he was a writer on SNL. And there’s an episode with Tom Hanks which he talks about specifically this sketch, where he has a small role as you can see.

One of the greatest and original sketches in SNL history. They couldn’t have done it without the iconic cameos. Think about the logistics of trying to schedule Steve Martin, Paul Simon and Elliott Gould together for this moment-plus rehearsals. So many hidden gems here too. Elliott laughing as Jon Lovitz runs off the set with “my muffins!” Paul with the quip “say hello for me” when Tom takes the red phone. The audience had no expectations of what was coming, so they probably had no idea it was actually Paul Simon when he first introduced himself to Tom-that initial hesitation like “is that who I think it is?” Then a huge ovation. Once it was established that we were getting cameos, the audience was ready to erupt. So well done, and everyone nailed their lines and marks perfectly. I can’t appreciate this skit any more than I already do. Just incredible.
Just watched the Five-Timer Monologue of Justin. So this is really touching. :)

Interesting fact is that Paul Simon met his future wife, singer/songwriter Edie Brickell on this show, since she was that night's musical guest.
He was twice her age and half her height.
And Edie also made an album with Steve Martin

Paul Simon looks like a first year student at Hogwart's.
Even so, a survey published by Cosmo back in the late eighties claimed Paul Simon got the most five-star reviews in bed out of all the hetero male celebrities of that time.
I love how Steve Martin 30 some-odd years ago and beyond looks pretty much like Steve Martin in the 5 Timers skit a few days ago with Mulaney...AND Conan. Haha. Awesome.

live 0123 I remember on the Sgt Bilko press tour he said underneath the grey it’s all black, he dyes it grey for film roles. Great

He had gray hair in the 70's as well.
For a few scenes in Father of the Bride II
He had dark hair in My Blue Heaven but that was a dye job. In The Jerk SM is grey but he has a bit more dark hair still mixed in.

I still use that line all the time.
To think, when this aired, Hanks still hadn’t done most of his classic films like Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, & Toy Story, or even won his 2 Oscars for Philadelphia & Forrest Gump

Easily one of the most iconic sketches in SNL history. Keeping it going over the years has given the show some nostalgic continuity........the surprise guest cameos are amazing.......perhaps with new technology they could have an AI-generated Buck Henry cameo

I mean, he was just a writer on snl at the time, not a star. Didn't even get his first show until three years later.
Conan was just a writer for the show at the time. He didn't get his own show until 1993, when David Letterman left Late Night to do a show on a different network.

This was filmed in 1990. Conan got his real breakthrough back in 1993 when he replaced David Letterman as a Late Night host.
He popped up as a bit player in sketches while he was a writer for a few years there, but he had no other claim to fame at the time

He wasn’t famous yet. He was working as a writer at SNL at the time. It would be another few years before he’d get Late Night.
He was just a WRITER at the time, faceless, behind the scenes.
Most of the people that knew him back then were also in the professional comedy game. This would be after he and Lisa Kudrow met in an improv class in Los Angeles, they've supported and encouraged each other this whole time.
He wasn't famous at all. Hed probably only been on TV for about 15 seconds total in his life at this point

Writing for SNL was his doorway to getting Late Nite after Letterman left. Lorne Michaels was his big advocate.

When he left snl, Lorne did everything to avoid it (Conan had depression at that moment), even pay him to don’t go to work, just to send his ideas. And when Conan was on the simpsons, Lorne thought on him to the job after most of the people who were priority decline the offer.... the rest is just history
I guess you missed his farewell speech on the Late show. He was given free reign that night a n many thought he would tell them to f*** off for jerking him around (giving him the show only to take it away & back to Leno. But instead, he showed his true character by humbly thanking NBC for all his years of writing @ 30 Rock. It was a very classy move. I loved when Tom Hanks came on giving him props and saying he & “the lovely Rita” were Team CoCo all the way! He concluded with starting the chant CoCo, complete with his hands forming a C and an O. ❤️

I was a big Edie Brickell fan back then, and was looking for great things from her after her first big album Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars. Then, Paul Simon married her, and that was the end of her career. :( Her next album was singing with all of her husband's friends.

I would love for SNL to have Gary Sinise on as host and do a Lieutenant Dan bit and a CSI bit. For the CSI bit, they could have other CSIs from NY or the other shows also guest appear(or just have the cast play various CSIs).
