    This is the Best Electronics repair channel on CZcams. I have watched countless hours of these videos right from the start. I have always done laptop repairs myself but since watching this channel I can now confidently carry out component repair, I fault find on boards (with no schematics) , I have even fixed Plasma TVs which is a big step going away from DC to AC. I have also done a "dodgy" repair in the past, the first one is the best. I had no 3.3 at pin 13 on a laptop, the pin was connected to the power switch on the other side of board so a break in the board somewhere. I used jumper wire from other side of board and glued it down. That was about 10 years ago...It still works now fine with no fire and smoke.
    Sorin, thank you for all the videos and repairs you bring us 👍

    Exactly. Repair can actually be boiled down to 2 types:
    1. High-end repair services that do things purely as intended, as close to perfectly matching and spec as it comes from the factory.
    For this type of service you'll be paying A LOT OF MONEY. A lot. The owner tends to have A+++ equipment to pay for, the exact replacement components are expensive, etc.
    2. All others, lol. The goal with the rest is to get the device working again AS CHEAPLY AS POSSIBLE. Not for the repair person but for the customer! Their $600 device stopped working a month after the warranty expired and they can afford about $75 to get it fixed. Do you turn them away? No.
    They'd rather have a 10% dodgy *but effective and lasting fix* than no device at all.
    For such a cheap repair, the repairman often cannot afford A++ equipment or official components from Mouser or whatever. They salvage from other broken devices and make their own fixes if they must!
    Why? The customer is poor and you have to clear enough profit from the cheap repair to live on. This is 95% of repair shops on this planet. About 5% are the deluxe, high-end places using $1500 soldering stations and such.

    • @roseelectronics4582
      @roseelectronics4582 Před 3 lety

      Actually it boils down to only one type. The first type that you mentioned doesn't exist in businesses as a consistent rule.

    • @DannyWilliamH
      @DannyWilliamH Před 3 lety +2

      @@roseelectronics4582
      No, they do. I mean, by percentage you're right but they do exist in somewhat decent numbers. I've been in a few just in my relatively small locale. They exist but they're much less common, so yes and no.
      They're the type to own an insane amount of equipment (too much, most times) and are usually people with degrees in engineering or the like. Guys that can easily draw the schematic of a board they look at for 20 seconds.
      Those shops charge a ton because you're getting A+ repair on A+ equipment from an A+ technician. They may fix a local municipality's aging networking boards one day and your PS4 the next and an airplane's navigation computer the day after. I know these guys.
      Yet, they do make up a very small percentage of the repair business because repair is mostly a necessity gig. You *could* buy a new laptop but you can't afford to spend $1000. So, you spend $100 at the local repairman who is almost always a member of the 2nd list. As stated, their job is to get it working for the lowest cost to you and highest profit to them. So...it's done on C-grade equipment. The repairman can be A+ but is usually D-B grade in ability. Etc.
      Why? Necessity. People slobber all over a guy like Louis Rossman and he's not even in that 1st category. He'd be about the best you can ask for from a shop in the 2nd. He's fine. He's in NYC so he'll charge a lot but you get solid repair work done.
      There is a Canadian guy on CZcams that is much closer to the 1st group. Carlson's Lab (or something similar). Smart guy, very talented and overflowing with equipment he'll mostly never use. He'll also charge a LOT for any job he takes because you're going to get it back literally better than factory.

    When I started as an electronics tech apprentice doing repairs on PABX circuit boards, the overseas engineering teams made us do ECO (Engineering Change Orders) to fix design faults.
    When I worked on industrial electronics, pro alarm systems, military gear, VT100 & Wyse monitors, Dataproducts pro line printers, PICK & Vax/Vms mainframe circuit boards I did the same ECOs.
    In fact, I caused a worldwide ECO on an old employers industrial IP67 computers because they were blowing up in western Australia mine sites reaching 265vac so I had modified the SMPS so it could cope up to 280vac & never had a return fault from mines & they won millions in orders over competitors.
    When I was working for the same employer, a store guy at a brewer customer put a forklift through a panel display accidentally.
    Problem was, the panel display held the only copy in Australia of a brewing recipe & no one had backed it up.
    I was tasked with getting it up and running, not to repair it but to suck the program out otherwise christmas beer supplies in Australia for a famous beer here would be delayed till late January.
    I had soldered up about 110 thin & tinned wirewrap wires to recreate all the severed address, data and control lines to wake up the soldered PLCC SMD Motorola microcontroller.
    After about 10 days I succeeded and sucked the program out and beer supplies were only affected by 1 week.
    As for the pro & dodgy way of repairs, if you're under costing pressures ie retail consumer customers you don't gave the luxury of repair time before the customer rejects the repair or goes elsewhere where some other dodgy repairer can succeed.
    Sure, watching channels like Sorin, piernov, Louis Rossman, Paul daniels, Defpom, Haseeb electronics, Trx bench, Mikes radio repair & others has taught me so much more but for heavily damaged boards or tough repairs its always a dilemma & gets far worse as economies shrink making people question viability more.
    Having being in both camps, the lines are blurry & even designers do dodgys.
    If you feel that dodginess is confined to electronics repair, oh lets not go into automotive, consumer appliance servicing or construction where bridges & buildings have fallen due to insufficient concrete in the mix.
    People mock techs for dodgy repairs but even designers do dodgy things.
    Open up most modern clock radios & similar consumer level gear & see the littany of design mistakes they do like putting 5W resistors or hot heatsink mounted transistors/mosfets near electrolytic caps causing them to shorten their life or even Apple placing high voltage pins close to 3.3v logic datalines on the macbook display connector
    I've done it all from Circuit trace foil PCB repairs, ECO bodge wires, redesigned circuits, upgraded SMPS caps with far better Nichicon ESR 105c specs, used green conformal coating so am sympathetic to all camps.
    Finally, I'm also tasked with updating servers (windows & linux) bi-monthly on the 3rd week of the month (never 2nd week as that's "patch tuesday") & wished I had 1 euro for each time IT people & stacks of MSPs had claimed they had been doing this constantly & they amazingly get completely embarrased, shouty/angry with me by calling them out over their dodginess claiming excuses like "Rdp is dodgy" or a bug which had existed in an old patch so if people think Sorin is dodgy, I can show u a few MSPs & IT guys who'd win an Oscar as I dare them to click "Check for updates" once more & then be shocked how a 2nd batch of hidden updates starts piling through

    Unfortunately, in most developed economies, due to high labor charges, a lot of electronics is simply nor repaired as its cheaper to replace. As you say poorer countries cannot afford to replace. People have the skills to troubleshoot carry out repairs with what is available. The UK is very lucky to have someone like you that can repair stuff, at a reasonable cost.

You know You are smart and Your level of knowledge is diversified and has a tremendous depth because you knows how electronic parts work and you have also good designing capability to tell you the truth. with out deeper knowledge you can not redesign and solve problems. you are fully confidential that you take a voltage from CPU supply! can we get an other person who have done this and give life for a dead laptop before you did? people say dodgy because you use jumpers, how this going to be new? we are using a lot of jumpers fixing phones. Dodgy or what ever the laptop is working perfectly. can we say the manufacturer dodgy because the laptop made by them is burning out? Thank you!

  • @ThomasRaud
    @ThomasRaud Před 3 lety

    Sorin, you have to ignore those jealous people! They dont understand simple electronics. If your car battery is empty (lost power rayl) and you take another car (useing another power rayl) and use jumperwire (using that damn ONE WIRE) to give kick on dead battery (to replace that dead power rayl), then this is not dodgy. If you do the same thing with electronics, then its dodgy. Thats wrong word what people use too much. I know, this is not looking good (pretty) but it works the same way as it worked before. That blown power rayl is made to act as a fuse, to give atleast some protection and stability for rush and surge of power usage.
    That dodgy style is cosmethic thing!
    Good work!

    For Soldering i use the Ersa I Con 1 Station and i am very happy with it u can programm a lot of temperatures and ranges and it has lot of power so it heats up very fast if u contact a PCB but i am afraid u wont like it cause its expensive in every case even tips and spare parts arent cheap but again i am happy with it!!

    Sorin. I am always amazed at how you fix electronic devices. Don't worry with negative comments. If you didn't repair it creatively, it would go to the junk pile. You demonstrate knowledge that shows how much you understand electronics. I always look forward to your videos. Keep on modifying.

    I enjoy watching your videos especially your "can do" attitude to repairs with great enthusiasm and humour. Most other repairers I encountered simply offer to "replace the motherboard" as a simple but expensive solution which in many cases can be regarded as "beyond economic repair"

    There is a big difference between an "ideal world" and the "real world". In an ideal world, everything is perfect, not so in the real world.
    I worked 25yrs as an Electronics Engineer for a very large well known car manufacturer. When the production line stopped, stop watches started.
    It did not matter HOW you repaired the fault, it mattered that the fault was repaired as quickly as possible.
    All these "experts" that think we live in "ideal world" wouldn't last 5 min fixing faults in real world land.

    You fixed it, you made it work, with absolutely no help from the manufacturer, who by the way seem to be happy for it to go to the waste and have the user buy more junk from them and some how Sorin is the bad guy! manufactures really don't give a damn about the consumer or the environment, it's all about the money and someone like Sorin should be commended.

    Hello Mr.Sorin , so between the choice of throwing the laptop in the garbage or using it 1 or 2 more years i would choose to use it regardless of the way how it was repaired , as a customer i don't care how that laptop was fixed , overall if its working everyone is happy , i also work in a factory with this kind of job and i understand your point of view dealing with customers and having dozens of more junk coming everyday of the week and a boss that keep saying "this needs to be done by the end of this day", greetings from Romania ( domn-profesor xD ) i appreciate the sharing of your jobs and teaching each of us how to deal with different kind of faults that otherwise would have been a big headeache for us until we figured it out! I wait for future videos in English or RO, despite the language you still remain the best teacher for me! #everybody will be dodgy at least once in their life#

    The CPU manufacturer will set the design rule for the CPU and power requirements or even specify the power supplies to be used, The manufacture of the laptop follows that design rules

  • @SimmiesSchrauberChannel

    On the powersupply-topic: Sadly I have seen manufactures shorting out on for 10 cents difference in manufactoring costs. They even market it as 1A constant but its only around 0.5A constant load. So i guess in the future more and more manufactures will cheap out on parts just to raise there margin. And because of that it will be harder and harder to repair boards that way. By the way: Great job - realy loving it!
    Greetings from Germany,
    Simmie

    Northridgefix or louis rossman are the ones to get the amtech flux from, and rossman and northridge both order very large quantities from amtech direct, its apparently a slow and laborious process but yes the amtech flux is widely regarded as the best in the market and is available from both of their youtube channels
    its hard to tell you anywhere else to buy it from because of the amounts of fake amtech out there, amtech wont sell it themselves without a merchant account,
