    Sorin, when i saw you back in the days, not having a Hotair Station at all and still de- and resoldering IC's on a Phones PCB, with a (i guess it was something ceramic) self made Hotair thingy, that was impressive!
    It showed me that its not the tools that i don't have restricting me, but my brain / thinking only!
    Thank you for that lesson, it changed my mind in so many ways! Keep up the great work buddy!

    Geez I sure like it when you get bored... this was great.. at 70 I have taken the task to understand electronics a bit.. though with this old mind of mine it is three steps forward and two back.. But there is some progress.. It is just new things are harder to retain these days..I have no problems reading schematics I know the parts and pieces fairly well (from my days troubleshooting auto wiring).. it is how they work that I still find hard to grasp.. But please set up a test video! (With explanations and answers either later or in another video..) I love being pushed to learn.. thanks Sorin.. hope you and your wife get healthy and stay happy.. All the best my friend..

    Linear power supplies are not rare, they simply expensive. Also You can tell the difference in size and weight. Linear are big and heavy. Switching power supplies are tiny and light.

    I work repairing mechanical/structural stuff on vehicles most places deem to be "Un-repairable". That stuff is just normal to us here. We only ever get the hard jobs. With little(ish) prior knowledge I dived into electronics repair to keep the brain active. Always be learning & all that.
    Right off the bat, it strikes me that the same applies as applies to vehicles - there's huge skills to be learnt if you want to do the hard repairs, it's not "easy", most can't be bothered with the hard stuff & you rapidly learn that the "Experts" you thought were experts aren't really that expert in a lot of cases once you understand their subject as well or better than them.
    The last ECU that came back from the "Experts" - I knew it had burnt traces - deemed "No Faults" by them, with a large bill, pushed me to start learning electronic repair. It hasn't been long, but it has been intense - I now know when I am getting smoke blown up my behind & why. That alone is priceless. Being able to repair it yourself is the icing on the cake. I go into "Sorin" mindset now - peering down microscopes.

    Since I cannot reply or edit my previous response, I'll add it here: In addition, I jumped in the deep end of the pool learning switch mode power supplies with a basic understanding of transistors, FETs, etc. Where your second illustration was much easier to follow, but it did take me many videos and notes on switch mode power supplies to understand how the feedback circuit affected the current draw across the main transistor and then how the optocoupler was the non-conductive way to separate out the hot and cold side of the SMPS.

    Greatings from serbia.
    The bench power supply you modified, you can do it in better way with the fan.
    One ntc thermistor from a old PC power supply, one transistor or mosfet and one potentiometar.
    So you can choose how the fan will gonna spinning.
    When the temperature is too low, then the speed of the fan will be reduced to minimum rpms, or no spinning at all.
    When the aluminium cooler is going hotter the fan will be spinning faster and faster.
    The temperature can be regulated with the potentiometar 😂😁😜

    Hi Sorin..Beside the basic instruments (dmm,solder iron,hot air) the most expensive tool is definitely the microscope and the arm. I dont know if a bga rework station is needed at the start. If you repair audio devices you also need oscilloscope, function generator and maybe an isolation autotransformer.

    For microscope the stand cost more than the camera, I can zoom into anything and micro-soldering as long as I can see it with stability. I have many stands - this is important! Depending on what you buy, some microphone stands will do a lot of good, I can do everything he and others do very well that are well financed - you need a PC and at least 1080p 50x zoom camera and a very stable stand. . .. for me the stand stability was the problem - once i fixed that - bam win.

    As a laboratory power supply, I can recommend the KORAD KA3005P (30V, 5A) or the more powerful model KA3010D (30V, 10A). Of course, both are linear. I had the 5A version and it was doing great because I repair car amplifiers and I replaced it with the 10A version, because 5A is a bit too little. It is a pity there is no 20A version. For this price, there is probably nothing better, because I was looking for a long time. 😁

Good magnifier. Loupe on good phone. Thermal cam with decent resolution. Decent bench space with everything accessible. First thought Important to me.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz Před rokem

      You know what i've bought a number of tweezers and i would describe a number of them as "good" but i'm still using the first real ones i bought many years ago just the cheapest, i'm just so used to the feel that i hesitate to replace them. They're looking pretty manky by now though, like i've been able to keep the working area of the tips at the very end largely in shape, but otherwise, oof. I look at them and think "i should throw them away" but then they're also the first ones i grab to use every single time.
      I'm also hesitant to replace my old meter that i've had for 15 years. It's got continuity buzzer (unlatched, fast) on 200 Ohm scale, which is something i absolutely love, there's barely any voltage and forced current so tiny i'm not terribly afraid to knock out modern semiconductors when using that. Diode mode tends to be much more harsh, being able to actually light up LEDs. Though being a Mastech it's just a tad closer to professional tools than outright cheap stuff, it's also seen some unsightly abuse by its previous owner.
      Thermal cam is i feel a silly expense, like, there's so many other techniques. Cold spray, iso spray, flux vape, hand, cheek, i mean sure you can put it to decent use, but it's not anyhow critical. The most critical thing and one i've been grappling with the hardest is workspace organisation for the tools that you already have.
      Also i've seen someone from another trade do a tablet repair just recently and they have struggled because they didn't have precision screwdrivers, nearly failed on that account. Oof. So that's definitely something not to forget, alongside pry tools and such. I also absolutely love throwing things on the bed of my 3D printer to unglue things, among numerous other nice uses for the machine, so some sort of flat heating device like that may be well advised. I don't think 3D printer is particularly useful for electronics repair, though it sometimes is, but it's also a giant commitment on the skill and effort fronts that i don't think is good for every repairman, like you'll spend time repairing that piece of shit regularly, so if that's what you live for, sure, but otherwise it can be more trouble than it's worth.
      One thing i absolutely would love to have and don't have yet is a scope. Well i mean i have a JYE toy one but it's hardly enough. Was tempted by Fnirsi but ooooof, such a janky tool. Next up are Owon and Hantek, they both seem adequate enough. Perhaps it's not a thing you need much with laptops or phones, but i really do something else, including analogue gear, audio, classic computers (8/16-bit), that this is actually a thing that is super helpful, plus for reverse engineering stuff. With classic computers and various retrofits into them, a 3D printer is also more useful, it can spit out key stems for the keyboard, brackets and fascias to install storage and video conversions, these sorts of things.

Even my thermal cam was about £50, and hot air either £40 or £60 :D and it's an air pump, not a fan. I use gel flux, it's just much easier for all microsoldering, so Kingbo or Amtech would do.

      @@fadetonoir6152 It's an eBay purchase and a low resolution of 8x8, but have payed for itself. You can see on this YT (my one) that I use it with some of the repairs.
      It's more like a module with a micro USB connector and a display, than a proper cam to be true :).

    14:50 Actually I think the best way to find a linear power supply is to look at weight. Doubt they put concrete bricks inside yet.
    But what is exactly wrong with switch-mode power supplies? We're just repairing stuff (that has switch mode power supplies itself), not designing any RF-equipment and such where all those noise might come through and cause confusion.
    Actually I am curious if is it possible to modify a welding inverter into lab bench power supply of sort. Welders are cheap these days, output insane amount of current. And if your circuit doesnt work you can always enable firework mode

    Why is switching power supply not ok? Because of the short circuit protection? You can use riden dps5005, 5020 that is programable buck converter. You can set the amp limit and will not turn off when short is created. Also the more powerful RD6006, rd6012,.. will not turn off when short is created if you set it so. And cheap server power supply is a great and cheap option and you have a perfect power supply.

    Can a linear power supply also have ripple?

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz Před rokem +1

      They're fundamentally going to have small but nonzero ripple. Any form of rectification creates switching noise thus ripple, you're necessarily going to have that on your secondary, and there's only so much noise rejection any circuit, analogue or otherwise, is going to provide, there is always a path for a little of it to get coupled over, though for a linear regulator, that's going to be like 60-80db down, really little ripple comes through ideally. Plus the regulation noise which can also imprint on the ripple rating.

    The UT8802E price is around 160-180 pounds. The UT8805E is way more expensive.

    Why doesn't your OBS have a pause button? I remember you wanted one.
    If it doesn't show up, make sure recording (settings > output > recording) isn't set to "(same as stream)" and that the encoder isn't custom. Encoder should either be NVENC or X264.
    NVENC takes fewer resources (relies on graphics card) and x264 is better quality but relies on CPU.

    • @electronicsrepairschool
      @electronicsrepairschool  Před rokem +1

      That was 10 years ago :) Now the new nvenc is few times over the x264 www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/news/geforce-rtx-streaming/ Right now, nvidia has a dedicated 2 pass encoder on a graphic card, and the new 4000 series has 2 dedicated encoders. Also obs can direct access the nvidia chip, so streaming and recording, it will take 0% from cpu and gpu

    I'm not sure if I passed the tests. Probably not. I get how some things work but others are always unclear. I recognised the second diagram, but only cause I´ve tried (and mostly failed) to fix old CRT TVs, plus your videos on power supplies, so I am familiar with those. You put any random other on screen, and I would had no clue.
    Same goes for many of the components. Even resistors as the one sensing overcurrent... very often I don´t really know how they affect the flow of current when transistors or mosftet are implied.
