I myself come from a country that has been ruined by 40 years of US sanctions that block even basic human needs like medicine; I come from Iran. Don't get me wrong, I do not like China at all. The Chinese themselves are turning into America 2.0 stealing 70% of Iranian oil profits, and doing economic imperialism across the third world and militaristic imperialism in the South China Sea. But I will defend their actions in Hong Kong since they have shown total restraint. If this was America, police would have beaten down the protestors into a bloody pulp, have we all forgotten Ferguson just a few years back? The fact that the movement is completely backed by foreign governments is why I think it is a bullshit movement just like the 2011 bullshit protests in countries like Libya. An interesting fact about the bombing of the UK was that the City of Leeds had very few raids and those that did occur caused very little damage. This seems strange as the City during the war had major engineering companies, armament companies, a clothing industry and was a major transport centre. After the war it was discovered that a large number of the planners in the Luftwaffe had actually lived in Leeds in the interwar years and that the Germans planned to use Leeds as a major administration centre after the invasion so they wanted to cause as little damage as possible. What is somewhat ironic is that the inventor of the Anderson air shelter used to protect people in bombing raids was invented by William Paterson who grew up and went to school in Leeds.

    Regarding night time air defense. May I recommend a minor post war movie called Light Up the Sky. The most famous name in the cast is probably a young Benny Hill, but the big name at the tie time was Ian Carmichael, who had actually been a tank officer in Normandy. The movie is how a understanding officer eventually shapes a mis fit searchlight unit into s functional part of the defense sstem. Films such as these are interesting beccause they show a little about how these units might have worked, though they do not seem to have had any coverage during the war. Alow budget comedy to be sure, but there were certainly plenty of search light beterans around to keep them reasonably close to reality.

    Naval Battle of Cape Passero this week shows that Italian Navy , best prepared service of Italian Armed Forces was at least trying to do something but at this stage they were complately outmatched by Royal Navy Mediterranean Fleet in terms of sea going and naval combat training , experience and technology. British naval vessels were equipped with radar , smokeless powder and night vision equipment. Royal Navy had a very good cooperation with RAF whose recon flights delivered early warning to Royal Navy task forces. Italians had none of these. Royal Navy before and during war had always training exercises in open seas , Italians due to lack of fuel mostly kept their vessels at port. Next month though Italian Navy will experience a very sharp blow at its own naval base at home front with a novel way of warfare.

    • @thecommentaryking
      @thecommentaryking Před 4 lety

      By late 1940 the British weren't outmatching the Italians in the naval engagements. Training was similar as was technology, experience was the only thing that the Italians lacked.
      Also you mentioned things that the British didn't have in 1940; radar started to be equipped on British vessels only from March 1941, smokeless powder was used by anyone in WW2 since it was adopted by anyone since 1886, while night vision equipment wasn't used by the British in WW2.
      The British recon aircrafts were most of the time from the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm not from the RAF. Also the Italians did have recon flights that helped their fleet.
      The "Italians that kept their ships in port is a myth", Italy started lacking fuel only after 1938, before that naval exercises were common

    • @merdiolu
      @merdiolu Před 4 lety

      @@thecommentaryking Royal Navy Mediterranean Fleet was getting best in each engagement with Regia Marina though. In fact under command of Admiral Cunningham (one of the best naval leaders of the war) British ships when not escorting convoys (which took a considerable time and resource anyway) were actually seeking engagement with Italian ships while on Italian side there was active reluctence to engage with enemy , their priorty was convoy escort from Italy to Libya at least till 1942. In 1942 Italian Navy became more agressive in seeking combat against British especially against Malta Convoys but they did this in an insufficient piecemental way.
      I believe Royal Navy vessels first time began to be equipped with ASVII surface and Type79 and Type 279 , Type 280 and Type 281 radars plus Precision Ranging Panels when war started in 1939-40.
      I meant flashless powder not smokeless powder thank you for correcting that mistake.
      And cooperation / coordination between Italian Air Force and Italian Navy were quite bad , on British side cooperation between RAF and Royal Navy was not smoothless either but much better compared to Italians whose aircraft accidently attacked friendly ships in Mediterranean quite a few times when they entered war. Most of recon info came from RN Fleet Air Arm as you said though.
      Oil embergo on Italy after invasion of Abysinia cut sea going , training and excerise time of Italian Navy quite a bit though after 1937. Their light fleet units like destroyers , torpedoboats , submarines sortied and caused quite a havoc on Allied naval routes in Central Mediterranean but larger heavy naval units of Italian Navy like heavy cruisers or battleships rarely left port except some eventual piecemental sorties

    • @thecommentaryking
      @thecommentaryking Před 4 lety

      @@merdiolu Yes, but in 1940 had none of the advantages you mentioned, that are anachronistic.
      Also, no the British were not seeking engagement with Regia Marina's ships, just like the Italians they tried to not openly engage the enemy fleet. The Italian reluctance to engage with the British in naval battles started only after the Raid of Taranto, but they retreated only when the British aircraft carriers where near; the reluctance of engaging the whole Royal Navy's squadrons was after Matapan, but only if it was nighttime battles or during bad weather.
      You are wrong about the British naval radars, their first use in naval battles was during the Battle of Cape Matapan in late March 1941 (type 271).
      Then things are different on the powder. But still the Italians used flashless powder on all naval guns under the 203 mm, the British instead used it mainly on guns smaller than the 6" (even if some historians claim that the British didn't supply even their light forces with flashless powder)
      Yes you are right the cooperation between Regia Aeronautica and Regia Marina.
      That is false, battleships and heavy cruisers did indeed participate in many patrol and escort operations during WW2 and saw extensive use until late 1942 when due to the lack of fuel were kept in port

      Sennheiser remote fly mic captured on a zoom.
      A Canon 8mm/35mm EF lens on a Canon C200 4K/Pro Res digital cinema camera.
      We acquire in 4K but use 1080 so that we can shift between close and wide in the same shot.

    I am saying this without any WW2 or history in mind. The queen of England was very very good looking in her youth. Now she is just good looking for her age.

    I am glad you give people a better understanding of the war and China and how difficult it is to find sources about it.
    On youtube and popular (as opposed to scientific) history books portray the war in Asia often similarly clear cut as in Europe when in reality it was totally different and sources are conflicting and sadly modern politics make it even more complicated.
    Millions of Chinese and Koreans supported the Japanese empire and many participated in their crimes against humanity. And yet, even the people fighting the Japanese empire and their collaborators fought among themselves and against the civilian population which were mere pawns in this war where everyone fought everyone with unclear goals, ideologies and objectives.
    It was a clusterfuck and sources reflect that since contemporary sources are hard to access, conflicting or sometimes not available.
    Even the so called three alls (sanko sakusen) Japan‘s biggest offensive against partisans and therefore terror against civilians, didnt have a name in Japan while Chinese came up with a Japanese name for it and the Japanese general in charge later became military advisor to the nationalist Chinese.
