And here it is, the last episode of 2019 (1940). And what a year it was. At its start, the Winter War was going on and Finland was surprising the world with its fierce resistance. In April, Denmark and Norway were taken by the Germans and in May, western Europe rapidly fell by the German Blitzkrieg. But the sky seemed to be the limit when the Germans cancelled their Invasion plans for Britain and withdrew from the Battle of Britain. As we move into 1941, Italy is in a pickle in Greece/Albania as the British seem to cause even more trouble for the Axis in North-Africa. Meanwhile, Japan is looking over its border in search of more conquests and natural resources. So while only a few days remain in 1940, I doubt the war will be done anytime soon. We wish you all a happy and safe New Years Eve, and we'll see you all in 2020/1941.
Cheers, Joram
I miss the Finnish resistance. Does that sound strange? It was kind of weird but I was watching it hoping they would make it even knowing the history of it.
Well, there's nothing wrong with a holiday re-watch of the Winter War
Hilarious thumbnail
Speaking of the Winter War, I would be very interested to hear what's going on in the ceded areas. There's not a war against humanity going on since everybody was evacuated, but what was the communist policy of settling the cities and villages with new inhabitants? Were the people forcibly transported or was the housing and land made affordable in the occupied areas so that people would move there voluntarily?
@@WorldWarTwo This year was better than your 1939 year, because you mentioned my GLORIOUS country. 🇱🇺 Though it was also trash as Germany invaded us. 😭😭😭😭
You can tell that it's the season of good will when everyone decides to leave Italy alone for a week...
but not for long
@George Washington I think Christmas comes later for the Orthodox (Julian Calendar).
Just looking for an excuse, in fact.
Trivia: The Greek government, wishing a naval success along with the victories in the Albanian front, for propaganda reasons, ordered submarine Papanikolis for its second mission (December 17 - December 27, 1940) to come out from the Greek territorial waters and patrol the Straits of Otrando to harass the Italian naval lines of reinforcements to Albania.
Οn 22 December 1940, Papanikolis sank the small Italian motor ship Antonietta, and, on the very next day, the 3,952-ton troop carrier Firenze near Sazan Island.
Despite the obvious inability of the Greek Navy to disrupt the Italian sea routes, the victories of Papanikolis were widely celebrated and became another morale boost for the rest of the War.

@Pedro Duarte 'They could have made peace', yes they 'could' have but the fact that they didn't wasn't too illogical. It might have been from a purely 'British' perspective but there is more to geopolitics than nationalism. Churchill saw Hitler as a threat to freedom and democracy and the general status quo in the world. He didn't want to let him have Europe just so Britain could keep calm and carry on.

This is the type of content the "History" channel needs to bring back, I remember when I was kid how excited I was to see what the "History" channel was talking about that day. Whether it be Rome, Greece, England/European history, or either of the world wars! Now its all garbage about aliens, some dudes searching for treasure at random lakes or forests, and cars...
"...the vices... duplicity and ingratitude..." Churchill got Franco perfectly right.
Cheers from Spain
I have to say that after watching this channel for a couple of years now, I'm getting a better perspective of the war. And the flow of history. How time moves incrementally, lesser events happen in dribs and drabs. All adding up together until there is a tremendous tidal wave of activity. History is made and recorded for posterity. And then time moves on, incrementally...
First of all , Happy Christmas and New Year everyone.
German economic brittleness especially in oil (which was covered brilliantly by TIK in his channel) but also their inability and unwillingness to converse into a Total War economy , is huge factor determining the course and outcome of this war. From 75 years of hindsight , it might seem very strange but no matter how glorious and overwhelmingly triumphal German military campaigns had been so far (and continue to be sucessful in varying degrees afterwards) their main advantage had been keeping these campaigns short and victorious , concluding them one by one then move on to next campaign without overstretching their forces in field or supply and logistics systems in rear. In strategy and economical sense Third Reich had been very lucky so far by using their advantages like first class transport railway system and well laid out autobahn highway system in Europe , central position in Europe to send , transport and focus military resources from one place to another and a sturdy industrial base (but not efficient or not efficient as much as it could be) combined with waging war against weak or at least crippled opponents in one way to another BUT they still are NOT preparing for a long term extended all out global war EVEN IF ambitions of of Third Reich leadership was about global hegamony. They are still thinking in short term goals , objectives and campaign limits. Just not to offend German nation , Hitler and his cohorts were not implementing Total War measures (these measures would decrease Nazi Party and Hitlers popularity they reasoned echoing the last years of Great War when deprevations were everywhere. For Nazis , keeping the image of triumphal popularity among German people , occupied nations and neutrals was vital) instead turning to looting occupied territories which was an inefficient way of organising for a global war even if for a short term. (what Nazi leadership or OKW refused to accept was this would be a long war) Loot is a short term inefficient supply system , it is neither uplifting morale or sufficient nor can be constantly sustaining your forces in field. Once your captured stocks are exhausted you are finished. That is why in modern wars , the winning side always initially establishes a constantly delivering supply and transport system that remain functional with maximum efficiency for sustaining the forces in field then goes to active operations. That is the one of Achillies Heels of German military machine. No matter how operationaly efficient they were , they overextended themselves , improvised logistics with short term looting and boot captured from enemy , neglecting an efficient supply and logistical apparatus , that supplied needs of field forces constantly.
With the recent perfections of Total War only Total War class combatants remain. Will they love one another more than themselves?
Paragraphs please.
Very well, and thoroughly, expressed.
The German army only ever expanded out from Germany with a continuous supply train all the way back to Germany on land. In North Africa they were just across from Italy who did the short convoy supply. They never had a navy to supply a remote army via sea.
The German economy and industry could not sustain a long war. Hitler went for gambles, which was short campaigns hoping to win. The gamble paid off in France beyond their widest dreams. Crete was lost then they did a last minute gamble paying off.
It failed in the USSR. *Germany had some spectacular initial gains, however nothing conclusive.*

I've got to say I am impressed with the amount of research that goes into this program each week. Amazing!
Great episode to conclude the year on!
When we look back at history their is a tendency for it to seem inevitable. Each action seems to cascade into the next and then the next, so much so it is easy to forget that each event is the result of the choices made by all of us, that at any point other choices may have been made, that may have altered the outcome. Never forget that it is our choices that create the history that will be looked back on. Happy New Year.
Again a beautiful made video. Keep up the good work. Regardless of the censorship of CZcams and other party's. I keep supporting you.
How fast yet another year is coming down to an end, with 1940 ending and 1941 about to begin. Most people expected the war to be over by Christmas 1940, but it seems like the war will extend beyond its almost two years length with no end in sight. 1940 itself already felt pretty packed with many important events and changes. We should probably expect 1941 to be likely similar or even more eventful than 1940.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year ahead to all of you.
And a Happy New Year to you as well! And you're quite right, things are going faster and faster snowballing its way into an even deadlier conflict. How will it all end?!

I think Fransisco Franco might have read a history book or two. For 3 centuries Spain had used its wealth from the new world to fund navies, armies and conducted wars with it, but by the end of the 19th century their economy was toast, then with the civil war destroying what remained they had no money for a war. So while they batted eyes at Germany, Franco knew they could not afford to go to war.
Also Spain was very dependent on western grain imports, which the British could have cut in the event of war, leaving Spain to starve.

Regarding Franco, I read somewhere that Franco's mother was half Jewish, meaning Franco had a set of Jewish grandparents and this helped sway Franco away from joining the Axis.

That is... a staggeringly amazing thumbnail...
Before making a video about the start of Barbarosa you should watch "Arthur Ross Book Award: Stalin: Waiting for Hitler, 1929-1941" from 37:55 till 57:30 where questions were asked - why Stalin ignored the warnings about the war.
Quick Correction about pronounciation of one of our Cities. I'm pretty sure you meant "Gelsenkirchen" which is spoken "GeL" like in "Loser". That is, unless there is a second city with a similar name around there which I am not aware of :D . Apart from that, the pronounciation was good.
This Winston bloke is pretty good with the writing and speaking thing, isn't he?
Seriously though, everything he writes or says sounds important and smart
Hitler did choose to invade the Soviet Union pretty much because there was nothing else for him to do. He wasn't going to invade Britain anytime soon, and Britain wasn't going to land back in Europe anytime soon. He needed resources that were in the USSR to continue fighting Britain, and he thought if a possible ally to them was knocked out they might quit. He couldn't really just sit there and wait to see what else would happen.
Guten Rutsch in neue Jahr!
8:00 Wow, I didn't know germans were active that far east in the war.
It's really amazing how the whole Iberian peninsula avoided ww2
The Iberian peninsula avoided war just because it already had a civil war and neither Hitler nor Churchill had anything big to offer to Franco in order for Spain to join the war.
British MI6 agents actually paid millions in bribes to Spanish generals to have them convince Franco to stay out of the war.
@@dragosstanciu9866 yah... Its more complicated then that. Salazar had a huge hand on it and the alliance with England and the entrance of Portugal in the war had a role on it.
Salazar was afraid (as always for Portugal) on a Spanish invasion, he knew very well the most radical falangalists wanted Portugal. And he was aware that the Germans might invade the Azores that had a key role in WW1 and he started to build fortifications and send soldiers for a possible German invasion. Franco the other hand, was afraid of a British invasion through Portugal if the British found out he wanted to invade Portugal with the help of the Germans. So Salazar had a reunion with Franco and both made a alliance and deal to enter the war if one of then is attacked. Meanwhile Salazar knew later that the British or americans were planing to invade the Azores, so Churchill and Salazar used the excuse of the old alliance and Portugal "give" the Azores to the allies. At the same time he send man from the Viriato division that helped Franco in the Civil war to the Spanish blue divosion, to fight the "main enemy" the Communist Soviet Union. While at the same time trading with the allies and the Axis. This is a period Portugal got alot of "German" gold. And Portugal kept the status of neutral with Spain.
@@gordusmaximus4990 interesting!
@@gordusmaximus4990 I understand, but let's keep in mind that even if Spain invaded Portugal the Spanish army was in no condition to fight a modern mechanized war and the RAF would have bombed all major Spanish cities. Thus Franco would have gained little by invading Portugal. Also Hitler was fixated on invading the USSR and not to help Spain against the British Empire, thus German help for Spain would have been minimal. Spain would have been destroyed by the RAF.
Merry Christmas all
Max Hastings said in his book The Secret War that the idea that Canaris was working against the axis is a myth. Always fascinating to see how sources and scholars can differ.
Canaris was working against Hitler, but Canaris wanted Germany to win the war.

I am given to wonder if the Reich could have lasted if they had stopped with France, eastern Europe and Scandinavia and stayed out of Russia?
Why should it last? That would have meant that Poland, Czechoslovakia, Norway, Denmark ,the Benelux would have remained under occupation and terror.
Who knows - The Soviet Union would have only gained strength and the Ideological differences between the nazis and soviets might have made war inevitable. Furthermore, Britain was still there, North Africa was still there and Italy was still messing stuff up in the Balkans.
1941.. Man I'm so excited for this year! Are you guys going to do another road trip in 2020? I already support you on Patreon, but I'd gladly chip in more to see you guys go to Russia, or China, or Pearl Harbor.
Perhaps, we're neck-deep in our preparations for 1941. We'll let you know when something becomes concrete.
I'd wonder about that take on Hitler's strategic plans: as you say, Germany needed primary resources and food, and the take from the conquered territories would Peter out soon with no plan underway to build up production, so they needed sources elsewhere. So: middle east, with oil but little food or metal; Africa with little of any readily available; leaves Poland/Ukraine/Russia looking like a good bet. Also not trusting Stalin not to attack a couple of years down the line, better to take the resources asap and set up a border further east.
