How to Paint Necrons Fast!

I've been meaning to add a Necron to my channel for a while now. I decided to challenge myself though and paint a scheme that I was too afraid to try back in the day when I first saw it. So many paint schemes seemed unachievable to a 13 year old me when I first started, not just because I was a beginner, the tools just weren't available to make anything easy for us. Now with the likes of contrast type paints, bolder colours and wider ranges of shades, it does seem like everything is possible, no matter your skill level. Even if it's not Golden Demon standard! I challenge you to pick a paint scheme that scared you before, and see if you now have the tools to achieve it!
Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll get back to you as soon as possible!
Here's how I based this Necron!

Andy - Jak na to + styl
Will you take up the challenge? What will you try out?
Actually none of it, just here for the Algorithm. But then again, its tradition.
No and yes.
I don't think "it is impossible".
I ask "how can I do it".
Living this journey with my DA and limited paint time. Always evolving the process when I do a new unit.
Tools have definitely improved in the hobby. The stuff I had access to as a youth would be considered garbage today :)
I painted my necrons in gree/purple color shifting paint way back in the day. I sold them many years ago but every now and then I come across an odd picture of them on the internet.
That’s very cool to see them still floating around the internet! Colour shifting Necrons…awesome idea!
I started my new necron army with metallic colors. However, I decided that I didn't want this and started looking for a new painting methods. My search has come to an end because of the wonderful video you have made. I ordered the same paints you used and will soon be painting my army following your steps.
That’s great to hear pal. Glad you liked it.
@@MediocreHobbies But I don't know how to paint the other models after the warriors are painted 😂
@@OttoMagnetic same way buddy. Everything you need is there.
@@MediocreHobbies thanks 🙏
Up until about two weeks ago i was sure painting any miniature was impossible for me, but i finally talked myself into painting one and it actually turned out decent so now I'm looking forward to getting an entire army up and painted
That is ace man. Nice work and I cannot wait to see how they turn out. I hope you post them somewhere and tag me.
Nice feel good vid. Thanks
Thanks pal. It’s how I feel making it. I have another planned for an old guard colour scheme.
More Necrons please xo
Yes sir.
First time seeing Warp lightning contrast, it looks like magic…
I’m just starting out struggling with abaddon black-corax white-tesseract glow… that paint is a game changer!
Yes it is! It gives such a great effect! Glad you liked it!
You are smashing it with content lately Andy! Lots of this resonated, not giving up half way on projects and pushing to master new techniques! I felt my nostalgia from the teenager years discovering the hobby! Remember the Eye of Terror summer campaign from around the time of that codex? Kudos to you, great to see you have so much success with your channel 💯
Your to kind pal. Thank you so much.
That guy looks super cool. I've always liked the ceramic look on Necrons. Maybe I'll give it a go if I ever get around to finishing my Necrons
Ye I’ve always liked it. Now a million more modes to do lol
Great to see you go out on your own Andy. Best of luck.
Thanks so much pal, appreciate that! 👍
Love this scheme 😍👌👏. Top work fella 👍🖌️👍🖌️👍🖌️👍
Thanks so much, really appreciate that 😊
That white Necron came out great! Looks so cool and definitely stands out from the sea of metallics that is the usual Necron fare.
I really miss the painting guides in codexes. They still do them for AoS though. A real shame that they're gone, because they're quite inspiring.
I have personal dreaded scheme or two. Imperial Fists or anything else that's yellow will forever be the bane of my existence and a quartered scheme like Howling Griffons is something awesome, but looks incredibly hard.
Ye there all schemes that seam crazy hard. You should for sure give one a go and see how it turns out.
This is a great tabletop ready paint job for a white ceramic necron. I'd have liked to see it then taken to a higher level. I think a bit of depth was lost with the basecoat layer and then I'd have liked to see some edge highlighting to take it to the next step. Do you think a 50:50 satin/gloss varnish then over the white would have given it that "china" pottery look or maybe even just satin? I have been thinking about this exact colour scheme for a necron army when I get around to building the army. I've had the army for a long (ish) time in my pile of shame but plan it to be the next paint job I tackle. What has always concerned me is that the white and the silver don't have enough difference/bang. I wondered about a more copper look for the metal or blue/black gun metal to give a greater contrast or even a slight blue glow to the metal to give that "living" metal look. Do you have any thoughts on giving a bit more to the metal to make it stand out?
All good points. I’d for sure love to see you do one up like that to compare. I like the idea of a satin varnish for the armour.
Good work, I think challenges like this are the only way to really improve. Not easy to see the stuff other people put out as achievable but everything is progress.
I think it depends what you look at, some competition level painters are just…well let’s just focus on what normal humans can achieve 😂 it’s also always ok to be happy with your own level and not try to improve, but I do think it’s cool to realise that schemes are so much easier now to achieve even for beginners thanks to new tools
Black Abbadon as base, dry gunmetal and little details in the colour u preffer. 5 minutes per miniature
Yep that’ll do it! I really wanted to try out this ceramic scheme though which isn’t the most simplistic but your scheme definitely makes for a speedy result!
Great stuff Andy
Thanks so much man! 🙌

I have changed my whole technique because of your fab channel! I have achieved more in the last 6 months than since I’ve known you! Glacial doesn’t describe my painting enough! You been brave and walking away from the machine has had a knock effect for a lot of people!
@@Thedagda801 that so kind to read pal. Thank you so much. But because of the crazy names I don’t know who you are. Now that you said that i should know lol really glad I’ve helped you paint more pal. And ye stepping away was a big decision. But I’m happy I made it. And it’s people like your and comments like yours that make me feel that every day.
That has given me a an idea for my indomitus necrons thank you
Great to hear that Sean! If there’s any other Necron schemes you like, feel free to ask about them!
Those early codexes were majikal...❤👍
Weren’t they? Love the new ones still but man…the old ones 🙌
👍Fabulous. Well done. Great channel by the way
Thanks so much, always makes my day to read comments like that pal
This is an amazing paint Andy. I really love how you did the gauss rifle, that was awesome. I haven't gotten to the "ugly" stage (so to speak) in my mini's yet, unless it's some minor dis-satisfaction in my end product, but that's a combination of a lack of skill and some minor tremors (I can fix the skill issue with practice). Got my Sisters Combat patrol finished, and did the primaris marines from the recruit box in a Space Wolves scheme (sort of). I can't wait to do the necrons, and I got some 'Nids, that I'm looking forward to painting.
Thank you so much pal. Glad you enjoyed the video. You have a great selection of miniatures to work on.
I’m not gonna lie I love it great job my dude
Thanks so much man glad you enjoyed it!
I remember you playing that necrons army before you even were staff and I could be wrong but I think I could have been your first ever game in store with my deathguard which I'm still playing to this day
You very well could have been. They were the best hobby times. Few good games a bit of painting subway for lunch. I miss them days.
That turned out great! If I should ever paint necrons I would very likely prime with a very dark metallic, drybrush with a regular metallic (old GW chainmail comes to mind), add some details with a light silver in prep for the contrast technique you are always using for gems and eyes, and finalize it with either a very vibrant contrast or fluo ink. Gun would probably be similar to your approach from the vid
It’s the traditional style. Will always look great.
currently using soulblight shade on white scars myself. works like a gem, I would love to see a video of you using it.
Definitely need to find a cool project to really show it off on, white scars are an option alright! Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment!
He turned out great Andy! How do you rate the new contrast paints?
New contrast paints are really
Good so far. I still need to do my video on a full review of them but I like to wait a while till I can do it justice.
Possibly take up the challenge but I have so much stuff to do
Yep. It’s crazy how big out back logs get.
How about making video about marble effects on bases etc ?
I could do that for sure.
seeing the old codex isso nostalgic i guess. the black and white art was so awesome and like nothing else around now days its all getting a bit samie
If I could get a big like A3 poster of the night bringer I would hang it in my background so fast lol
Well done! You're making me consider starting that up! What would you suggest doing additionally for any character models or vehicles, etc?
Introduction of gold for all trim on the characters. Or a different colour to indicate there importance.
Another great tutorial Andy I’ve got plenty of necrons to build and paint in my indomitus box set, it was interesting to see all the different colour schemes that showed you in your codex, I didn’t even realise there was an enamel scheme, do you think a primary colour would look out of place on the armour plating ? It would certainly be something different , sorry I missed the stream on Tuesday but I’m currently on Holiday I’ll be back for next weeks stream, also congrats on hitting 17k subs, onwards and upwards !
Ye there is so many different colour schemes on the old books. And ye a primary colour scheme would look great on the necrons.
I have that necron codex but i play 2nd and 3rd edition tyranids
I’m not sure what you mean by that.
Nice one. Say, just out of curiosity, if I had a need (bordering on the pathological) to make every aspect of my life difficult, with which paint would I highlight the Celestra Grey?
Also, I hope to hold you to your pledge making these videos until the end of time.
Probably Ulthwan grey or how ever you spell it lol. And for sure till the end of time.
Hello, don't know if you still check the comments here but this video is exactly what I was looking for thanks!
Got a question as well, I was planning on using purple for the energy instead of green, do you have any recommendations for a purple colour to replace warp lightning with?
Alway checking comments pal. There are a few purple contrasts and a nice shade as well maybe gets they put on a spare piece or a spare bit of sprue. I don’t use purple a lot so it’s not my strong suit.
@@MediocreHobbies Understood, I'll experiment with a few different ones then, thanks and keep up the good work!
This was really neat :) could it be applied to other minis as well or is it most effective on necrons?
Also I'm a little confused what was the purpose of shading twice? Was on for the layer paints and one for the matalic?
You could of course use it on anything you like. And the first shade was to get the bad coat for the white armour in place. And the second was to actually shade the model. Of that makes sense.
@@MediocreHobbies it does now, thank you very much
ummm, this is not fast. lol. I have my minis done in less than 2 mins each. a primer, a contrast, and 2 colors. These look great but, not fast lol.
I guess any scheme is going to sound slow after a scheme as fast as yours. I’d love to see how yours turns out.
