It probably wasn't laziness, to be honest. More likely that it was caused by the owners not speaking English as their first language and/or they might have a thick accent, and they were worried that would "scare away" customers or get made fun of. Them not being fluent in English would also probably mean they didn't really notice just how robotic the text-to-speech sounded.
