  • For many critics, the arch-conservative Catholic community Opus Dei is a diabolical sect. However, Opus Dei (which translates to "Work of God”) sees itself in a very positive light. Even today, it’s very difficult to look into the inner world of the sect.
    That's because its 90,000 members worldwide have taken a vow of secrecy - and those who have left report persecution if they break that vow. Meanwhile, Opus Dei is working to become the most influential player in the Catholic Church. To this end, it maintains a secret network - including branches in Germany.
    It is no coincidence that the German headquarters are located in Cologne - Germany‘s most powerful Catholic archdiocese. In Germany, Opus Dei is focused on trying to gain a foothold in the field of education, by running daycare centers and schools.
    The examination of a daycare center in Munich shows that Opus Dei deliberately conceals its involvement in these institutions. Another component of the network is IESE, the business school of Opus Dei, which also has an offshoot in Germany. It is considered one of the best schools of its kind in the world.
    In Spain, where Opus Dei originated, sect members are active in parts of the judicial and educational sectors. The documentary tries to uncover these connections in both Spain and Germany, and lets both victims and experts have their say. It also includes an interview with the head of Opus Dei, Christoph Bockamp.
    For the first time, a former member from Germany reports on her ordeal in Opus Dei and the harassment she experienced after she broke away from the sect. Spaniard Carmen Charo developed mental health problems during her time in Opus Dei, due to brainwashing and psychological pressure. Today, she helps others in their journey out of Opus Dei.
    Dietmar Scharmitzer is trying to do the same thing with German-speaking people who want to leave, and runs an Internet platform to help inform them. Finally, Marco Politi, an author and Vatican expert from Rome, takes stock of the influence Opus Dei has exerted since the time of Pope John Paul II.

      All educational clubs, universities or institutes that have members who establish these programs tend to excel. My prep school was and is one of the best in the DC metro area. Jesuit’s schools are their main competition yet people would never dare to call them cultish. A strong discipline in education, hence why in Asia it’s starting to pick up their expansion.

      As a Spaniard, there's definitely something odd about that story because the University of Navarra is NOWHERE NEAR being the best university in Spain. In Spain the whole presitigious/college culture doesn't exist; the only ones that are somewhat academically recognized as the best are all in Catalonia.

      Yep, come to grips God's judgement on how we do trying to govern under Satan. This spiritual condition makes the world unfit for beings originally made in His image. Satan mocks God with our condition. So where does this leave Opus Dei. It's a cult part christian , part something else. Though hand be joined in hand they will not go without censure if they do wrong to each other. They serve an idea and ideal and an organization. I'd be happy to know I am wrong, seriously.

    I was Opus Dei educated from 7th grade through college. I had no boss, just a confessor who was my priest from birth. Fr Fred knew me before I was born and died in 2007. No one is keeping tags on you, I’m hyper-numerate, which is just really great at math. I then selected a new priest and he has to listen to me now, I don’t work for the priest he works for me.
    Also, I never saw my parents pay them anything. I was on a full ride the whole way.
    I’ve never seen one of my professors inflict pain or intentionally bruise themselves. This documentary is just people who hurt. Some of what they say may actually be true. But it’s like combat in the desert…results may vary. I was a test pilot for helicopters, my younger brother was a truck driver, and another brother a Cavalry scout. My tours were highly hands on but easy…only for me.
    Opus Dei cares for many people who cannot do mathematics, they recruit mathematicians and teachers…I bet there are a few pricks in the organization. It’s like this in all organizations. Organizations have flaws. Opus Dei has people, who take in and care for the simple, some autism, fetal alcohol adoptions, lambs of God.

    • @duncescotus2342
      @duncescotus2342 Před rokem +8

      @Hyperdulia What are you saying? Are we Jews? How do we "follow God's law?'
      1. "Christ is the end (cessation, goal) of the law unto righteousness..." (Romans 10:4)
      2. "Abolishing in His flesh the commandments in ordinances..." (Ephesians 2:15)
      3. "He is the mediator of a better covenant..." (Hebrews 8:6)
      4. "Not by works of righteousness which we have done..." (Titus 3:5)
      5. "He himself bore our sins in His body..." (1 Peter 2:24)
      6. The law is called "the yoke of slavery which our forefathers (the Jews) could not bear." (Peter speaking in Acts 15:10)
      7. "Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions..." (Galatians 3:19)
      8. The Old Testaments prophets bear witness of the true righteousness of God:
      "Who has believed our message?
      And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
      He grew up before Him like a tender shoot,
      and like a root out of dry ground.
      He had no stately form or majesty to attract us,
      no beauty that we should desire Him.
      He was despised and rejected by men,
      a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.
      Like one from whom men hide their faces,
      He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.
      Surely He took on our infirmities
      and carried our sorrows;
      yet we considered Him stricken by God,
      struck down and afflicted.
      But He was pierced for our transgressions,
      He was crushed for our iniquities;
      the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him,
      and by His stripes we are healed.
      We all like sheep have gone astray,
      each one has turned to his own way;
      and the LORD has laid upon Him
      the iniquity of us all." (Isaiah 53:1-6)
      9. If that is not enough, this one ought to cinch the point:
      "You who are of the law (seeking to justified by it) are cut off (separated, divorced) from Christ. You have fallen from grace." (Galatians 5:4)
      Please pray on these things. The ignorance of scripture and even the cross itself is staggeringly apparent here. I say this with sadness to the profound discredit of your organization. You are not a chaste bride, but adulterers of the New Testament of His blood.

      @Hyperdulia Ok, I'm sorry. I see that English is not your first language. Yes, what you say is true, but be very suspicious of all American organizations (and the American branch of international ones) as they are very political and almost all corrupt. This is a country where huge amounts of money are funneled to these non-profit non-taxable fronts in order to win votes.

    • @duncescotus2342
      @duncescotus2342 Před rokem

      @Hyperdulia Ok, thanks for that reply. You may be right, especially concerning the roots of the movement and its original intent. But secrecy is not a New Testament virtue. The Holy of Holies is open. That's the first thing that happened when Jesus died.
      Also, check out the "C-streeters." These are Washington DC insiders (Christians) who have influenced politics for years using secrecy.
      And of course, there's the old Enlightenment standby Freemasonry.
      No good.
      There's enough clubs within Catholicism. We need no more confraternities. There was a time for monasticism. A time for universities.
      We need unity in the Christian faith--Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant.
      That time is now.

      @Hyperdulia Trinity is actually the Doctrine of the Devil....sorry🤷🏿‍♀️.
      There is Almighty God 💎Genesis 17:1; 35 who is The Most High God. And we have his Son, the Son of God 💎Hebrews 4:14, The Son of the Most High 💎Luke 1:30-32, 34, 35, who is our Lord and Savior...Our MIGHTY GOD
      💎Isaiah 9:6. The problem is you all are not reading and studying the Scriptures that provides the truth about Who Christ and his Father Almighty God is. Jesus told us he has a Father. JESUS FATHER SENT HIM TO EARTH...GAVE HIM TO THE WORLD 💎John 3:16;
      💎John 4:34; 5:30, 37; 💎John 6:38-40. Jesus told you his Father is greater than he is 💎John 14:28; 💎John 5:22; 💎Matthew 11:27; 💎Luke 10:22; 💎John 6:44, 65 and 💎John 14:6;
      💎John 10:29. YES JESUS BY HIS OWN WORD TELLS US HE HAS A FATHER SEE 💎Matthew 7:21. What did Jesus say at
      💎Luke 22:42. IF GOD AND JESUS ARE "ONE IN ESSENCE, " AS THE TRINITY SAYS , HOW COULD JESUS'S WILL, OR WISH, SEEM DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF HIS FATHER? 💎Hebrews 5:7, 8;
      💎Hebrews 9:24; REASON ON THAT.
      STOP CALLING JESUS AND HIS FATHER A LIAR!. I WOULD SUGGEST YOU DO WHAT
      💎John 17:3 and 💎Romans 10:9 tells you to do. Everlasting life hinges on this and flee these churches and their false religious teachings courtesy of Satan the Devil.
      Read 💎John 20:17.
      Also READ in the holy Scriptures 💎John 10:18; 💎John 12:49;
      💎John 15:10 and also check out
      💎1 Corinthians 11:3 (The head of Christ is God); 💎1 Corinthians 8:6 and also 💎1 Timothy 2:3-6.
      Worship God, Jesus told Satan at 💎Matthew 4:10. Jesus did not tell Satan to worship him, he told Satan to Worship God ...to worship The Father.
      The god many of you are worshiping and following and praying to is Satan the Devil the ruler and god of this world
      💎1 John 5:19. This wickedness spoken about in this documentary is NOT of God... NOT this nor a religious organization that condone and encourage this brand of evil...This is not the act or behavior of Jesus Christ or his Father. READ THE HOLY BIBLE. TRINITY IS A FALSE DOCTRINE AND THE SCRIPTURES SUPPORTS THIS. THE TRINITY IS NOT...NOT...I REPEAT NOT A TEACHING OF JESUS OR OF THE EARLY CHRISTIANS. IF YOU BELIEVE THIS THEN PROVIDE SCRIPTURAL PROOF....PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
      Finally Scriptures said call no one on earth Father except our Heavenly Father, our Almighty God (Look this Scripture up for yourself). The Pope is a man. He is not your Father. Almighty God is🤷🏿‍♀️

    The way OD operates sounds similar to how the evangelical movement infiltrated local government in the USA by running for every position available then once in office they could staff non elected positions in local government with like minded people who were basically permanent. With this base they were able to move on to state level then national level elected offices and it was extremely effective. I actually had a situation where a mental health worker at a county center insisted we pray and she basically started speaking in tongues. And I thought I was supposed to be the crazy one.

      I agree with you. What is so surprising to me is that what is obvious now, as the scales have fallen from my eyes, there has always been an agenda. Nothing, but nothing, just happens. Plans for this time in our world had been made a long time ago. It’s always about power, money and deceit. I’m an Italian Jew and my father was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite and Grande d’Italia Orient. He told me years ago that everything those in power have created is an illusion. They create our reality. It works on so many people. But those who seek the truth and are not afraid to pull the scales from our eyes, THE TRUTH WILL BE REVEALED. If anyone tries to manipulate or dominate you, you can be sure it is evil. I put on God’s armor of protection from the evil one on everyday….sometimes several times a day. We are in for some serious times, now. Just like Jesus asked his disciples to watch and be alert as Jesus prayed to The Father for strength to face what He knew …..that great suffering was ahead of him. But his disciples fell asleep. I can hear Jesus whispering in my ear….stay awake and be alert, the lion is circling looking for someone to devour.

However as a teenager my parents didn’t know what to do with me so they decided to send me to live with nuns that lived in a home they shared and also have known me since birth. The sisters had a scheduled everyday and that waking up early getting ready then having breakfast then praying 🙏🏼 the rosary going to the church and praying some more then going back to their home eat dinner and get ready for bed by 8 p. I looked forward to Sunday church cause my parents were in the choir. It was kinda scary only cause it was always quiet. Ok now I questioned them why they woke up so early then go to bed early. The five sisters would break some rules for me and take me to the movies 🍿 and take me to my parents so I can tell my momma why she left me there and she replied “I thought it would be nice for U and fix U. “ well I did learn the nuns never got nun. and learned to behave so I don’t have to go to church 5 times a week lol. Don’t get me wrong I love my God but I was a teenager. it’s 2weeks and my beautiful nuns needed a break from me. Lol. The point is I never saw these nuns stressed out or scared of the priests. Maybe it’s cause it’s different now. My beautiful nuns are all past away now and missed dearly. How ever I don’t understand how this could turn to a cult. To me, the problem does not seem to be the rules, obedience (unless commanded into a sin), and penitential practices - if one doesn't like an organization, don't join it. The problem with this group is that one seems to be love bombed and drawn into a world one didn't expect or anticipate with full knowledge and freedom of choice. Also, whatever compels one to stay out of fear or guilt or fearing the loss of one's salvation is also a far cry from other organizations, however severe and penitential, but where one is free to leave and advocated to leave if one is not up for the lifestyle.

Everything was ok until I mentioned to a numerary if he had read a recent bio of St. Thomas More. He told me that the book was not on the approved list for OD members but referred me to one written by a member. This didn't sit well with me. After a few years and numerous cooperator meetings , I decided that the OD was not the right fit with my own spirituality. However, I found found nothing nefarious or sinister with the regard to the organization. However, for one raised in the Franciscan tradition, OD appears to be the direct opposite. This documentary stirred lots of painful memories. I was in a relationship with an OD member when I was doing my PhD at an elite university in Europe. As an atheist from outside of Europe, I had not heard of OD and didn't know he was in OD. I thought he was just religious as he went to church and prayed a lot every day. He kept our relationship a secret and traveled back home in Spain every weekend. I was naïve and thought he might have another girlfriend or even family back home. I finally found out about OD and learned that he was supposed to be celibate. He told me he'd lived in some sort of university dorm with some senior priests since a kid. OD sent him to our university for doing PhD to prepare him for leadership in an elite university in Spain. He said it was his first time living on his own, and he felt more distant from God. He said he went back to the dorm in Spain every weekend to restore his faith and to have weekly meetings on new recruits. I saw him struggle for months, and one day he said he was going through the legal procedures to quit OD. He became a different person once quitting OD; we broke up on bad terms and have not spoken since. Upon graduating his PhD, he joined the elite university in Spain as originally planned and is happily married. I am happy for him, but I wish I didn't have to go through all those painful years to find out about OD.

Opus Dei, like many Catholic organizations, has done much good in the world which is not public knowledge which could have been highlighted more than just casual remarks in passing. That said, the charism of St. Josemaria Escriva, sanctity in ordinary life, was and remains valid today in these spiritually tumultuous times. It may be true that the original objectives of Opus Dei have been sidetracked by politics, wealth-building or other considerations. If this is the case then there should be a return to the roots.

    Good to see topics like this being covered. I personally feel as though this documentary is way too sensational, and it is a little too far-reaching in its interpretations and conclusions. You can essentially boil the documentary down to Opus Dei is a very conservative Catholic religious group within the larger group of Christians.
    Like saying how Opus Dei plotted the death of one of their members - seemed like gaslighting to me rather than good journalism. And to follow up with the organization pursuing what I am assuming is executorship of the will is not uncommon. My uncle was a Jehovah's Witness and those awful, manipulative people made a play for his will at his wake - like literally over his dead body. These things are unfortunately fairly common with groups in general. All this coverage of Opus Dei to me is acknowledging the obvious - that Christianity has its ultra conservative members who wish to have influence in a secular society. Evangelical Christians are like this all over the USA, so I don't really get the hype about Opus Dei. Like, you could probably make a more convincing argument with the Knights of Columbus, rather than Opus Dei.
    As a Roman Catholic, I can say that my church struggles to get me in the pew every Sunday. They don't have as much influence as the media makes you think. Tik Tok or Jeff Bezos have more control over your everyday life than the Catholic Church. And if you're paranoid about religious zealots taking over the government, Catholics should be low on the list. The KKK (who persecuted Catholics) had influence in Washington into the 20th century. They are protestants... sorry... Evangelicals. Just saying.

      ... and what is wrong with authority? If you belong to any group, you have to accept the authority that define the group. In everyday life, there is the authority of the law, etc.
      What is wrong with the Authority of Christ?
      Let the modern world not forget that being a Christian, by this fact the person is suppose to accept the Authority of Christ "in heaven and on earth," not her private opinion / private "self-determination" ... this should be very well known, it is all over the Bible, especially the Gospels. If the "Sheep" cannot hear His (Christ's) Voice, ie, cannot accept His Authority, then it just means, she is not His ...

      The legacies and remnants still withstand to this day. Particularly in non-white communities. The fetal alcohol syndrome, the unemployment, all the addictions, the mass incarceration, the poverty, and so much more. Not only were cultures and communities disintegrated and destroyed, but so too were natural ecosystems.
      The expansionist zeal at the rotten core of Christendom and Western Civilization has been a plague to mother earth and her peoples. And still, they've got the nerve to call non-white peoples backward, barbaric, criminals, rapists, and terrorists.

    The government of the Central Bank in Kenya is an Opus Dei member and reportedly gave up his salary for the poor when appointed. My aunt is Opus Dei.
    I really appreciate that none of the member I know try to convert me, I find that very annoying with some Christians groups. That said, religious freedom and diversity in Kenya like many Africann countries is very, very normal and you have everyone from Africanists to Muslims and Christians. Thankfully, we don't have the kind of madness like in tthe west where some don't want to allow religious people freedom or the other extreme such as in the US where some religious groups don't allow anyone to have their say.
    I have known Opus Dei members and one the best universities in Kenya and Schools are owned by them. They accept everyone but the dress code and discipline are emphasized. This is a very interesting documentary. As I understand it, this is one of goals the members have - to integrate in society and it's quite OK.
    Could it be that some of these sects are more strict where they originate than in other areas? I think of Jehovas Witnesses too as the ones I know in Kenya aren't as strict - why? Anyway, wishing you peace and tolerance.

There are also MANY Judiasm, Islamic, and other faith driven schools throught the USA. The private schools do NOT have teacher unions therefore things the public school systems FORCE on students and parents due to the State politicians and State Teachers Union is removed from the equation. The only risk I see with this Federal funding is it's an attempt to control the private schools like they have been controlling the public school system. Some of the smarter or the more financially stable private schools may decide that accepting the Federal funding is NOT worth it, just like 10 States rejected the HUGE Federal funding that was linked to Bill Gates (A Rockefeller) COMMON CORE disaster which has successfully dumb-downed the American youth. That is exactly what it was intended to do. The ONLY way the State's who jumped on board with it and quickly excepted BILLIONS in Federal funding, who wanted out when their schools, teachers, and parents realized how horrible it was, could ONLY opt out by paying the BILLIONS in Federal Funding Back. Approx. 8-10 years ago, 40 States joined forces to get out of Gates Common Core, and it was determined that if most of them returned the BILLIONS in Federal funding their State would go bankrupt. If I was running a private religious school I would think twice before accepting one cent from the US Federal Govt. because you can rest assured there is an AGENDA attached that funding.

    This video has been produced by someone who was not taught the Holy Roman Catholic Faith, nor has read the lives of the saints. It has a very protestant feel to the contents. Of course there are Catholics who fail to understand the rule of obedience and how challenging it is. I am not a member of Opus Dei, never was; but realise ignorance of the Faith and what it requires to submit to a life of total obedience would be. In lay mans terms it is like being in the army during combat where orders are orders and have to be obeyed. This is one way we can serve God in opposition to the devil which was cast out of Heaven when it said "I will NOT serve."

    I know many people in Opus Dei to know that many things shown here are not exactly as they are depicted. Some allegations here are really preposterous. The writings and teachings of the founder, St Josemaria are even twisted to suit the whole story. Of course, it’s expected that former disgruntled members can only say negative things about the organization. Many of those who appear here are former members who are critical of Opus Dei. If only DW also interviewed those who know Opus Dei (without even being members or part of the organization but who knows it’s activities) to show a balanced view of things. This seems to be a one-sided documentary.

    Nothing new under the sun. Mix secular journalists' opinion with ominous music---and bam!---you get a thriller documentary. Also why not add seeds of doubt to a case already deemed as having no indication of foul play while they are at it?
    Except for manipulation/pressure (the testimony of the former members are quite valid), majority of what is reported here is actually quite common to other religious orders: strict schedule (not a surprise...), obedience (unless it is unethical), giving all your money to the organisation (all religious members do this but nobody bats an eye), and limited entertainment (please direct them to a nearby Catholic monastery), but the report makes it seem like this is only Opus Dei's practice. Not even physical mortification is an issue. Many saints did this!
    So it seems what is problematic to DW is that Opus Dei is Catholic; the "journalist" sounded somewhat dismayed that Pope Francis was not "in the reform movement". LOL, what does that have anything to do with Opus Dei??

    • @teenafogarty1534
      @teenafogarty1534 Před rokem

      Using argument like this to try to justify coercive control and manipulation is very cult-like. Usually members are groomed to think in this way and are prepared to overlook all the things that are wrong because it suits the agenda. Opus dei IS a cult and as dangerous as any other. Gaslighting former members by labeling them as disgruntled' is the equivalent of saying someone who speaks out about their sexual abuse ar any other abuse is the guilty party instead of the victim. The psychology damage done by OD to it's members to get them to think and act they way they dictate is incredibly damaging and can take years for people to deprogram and recover from. Don't blame the victim.....hear the victims..... support the victims
