Sanctuary of Sin: How a religious order became a haven for pedophile priests | NewsNation Prime

  • NewsNation affiliate WGN presents “Sanctuary of Sin”, a look at a little-known religious order and the role it played in the Catholic church sex abuse crisis. Most people have never heard of the Servants of the Paraclete. Founded in 1947, its mission is to help clergy in crisis, and was soon overwhelmed by priests accused of sexual abuse. Are clergy the best people to keep an eye on priests? Some suggest the religious order isn't helping these priests, they're hiding them.

      Yes, this has been going on for centuries "in the Catholic church". Yes, child sexual abuse frequently pops up in other religions, and also, schools, and other institutions. But, there is a huge difference. The Catholic church pedophilia is dug in like a tick. Pennsylvania Attorney General, Shapira, referred to the Catholic church as "organized crime, mafia style" and issued an 850+ page grand jury indictment on priests. The church fought in the courts to suppress the names of the predator priests, allowing them to remain incognito, so they could continue preying on innocent children.
      Most guilty priests dodged justice because the church fought in the courts until the stature of limitations ran out. These predator priests are most likely still hanging around, because the Catholic community is too busy pointing fingers at others rather than sweeping around their own back porch.
      The phenomena is world wide, with accusations of hundreds of thousands of abused Catholic children across Europe alone. The church orchestrated a huge cover up and refused to cooperate with law enforcement. Nothing has changed in the church, and nothing will, because Catholics refuse to "man up" and fight back.

      @barbwire7449 Před 15 dny

      @@alecrim888 It is a serious problem in the Catholic church because the members and the leadership refuses to deal with it. Hundreds of thousands of children in Europe alone have accusations of child sexual abuse, especially in France. The Pennsylvania grand jury, investigating child abuse in the state, delivered an 850 +pages of indictments and horrific details of abuse.
      The state Attorney General, Shipira, accused the Catholic church of mafia style tactics in their cover up and refusal to solve the problem. Hundreds of priests ruined the lives of little innocent ones, whole communities devastated, while the Catholic church pointed fingers at other institutions doing the same. Thanks to the church dragging out the outcome in the courts, only a few predator priests were prosecuted, because the statute of limitations ran out.
      The church lawyered up and tried to stop the release of the names of the predator priests, rather than punish them, ensuring that other children would be victims of unidentified priests. This is pure evil. No other church, school, business, or any other institution has acted in this manner. The church needs to "man up", accept responsibility for their misbehavior, and report child abuse rather than hide it. Meanwhile, leave your children alone with a priest at their own peril.

    Offering counseling to offending priests is commendable but it should not be a substitute for facing the legal consequences of inappropriate behavior. Sexual abuse is a criminal offense as well as moral deficiency. By not dealing with offending priests, the Church undermines its own integrity and credibility. Why aren't offending abusers defrocked? Tax exemption status should be dependent on the compliance with government requests for transparency. From my early adulthood, I knew about renewal centers but in my innocence, I thought that they dealt with priests' alcoholism, substance abuse and gambling habits.

      Once ordained, you cannot remove the consecrated status of an individual. Tu es sacerdos in aeternam - you are a priest forever. You can stop his officiating any priestly duties, but you cannot "unmake" his consecrated status. Even those who voluntarily leave the priesthood and live in the secular world, they are still consecrated men of God, just not practicing. Just like an ex-president - he is always Mr President, although not acting or holding the power of that office.

They eventually found abuse going up to the level of an Archbishop whose crimes had been known about since the 50s in Nova Scotia and the community halls that the local congregations had funded and built with donated labour were all sold to pay for the consequences. To repeat, it should have been addressed by the church immediately, Unfortunately, the abuse went all the way up into the hierarchy, those who were guilty themselves, McCarrick, an abuser himself, and others, and Law, and others, who knew but did nothing! The greatest abuse was moving these religious from parish to parish to let them continue their abuse on more children. My brother in law grew up in Rock Island IL and was an alter boy in the Catholic Church. He passed away last year at age 65 after struggling his whole life with an alcohol addiction. One evening he confessed to me he had been sexually molested by his Priest but said the memories were fuzzy stating he thinks from blocking them out for so long. He lived his whole life with the aftermath of what happened and drank himself to death. The Catholic church can try to cover and protect the guilty all they want. But Gods own word says; “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord Rom 12:19. Better for him to have had a millstone tied about his neck, and to be cast into the sea, than to have hurt the conscience of one of these little ones." Roman Catholic Canon Law stipulates that the Civil Power has no jurisdiction over the Spiritual Power (The Church) and that the Civil Power must by all means SERVE the Church. That's why "The Church watches The Church". No Civil Authority of any rank has any authority whatsoever over The Church. Further, every property of The Church is a sovereign sanctuary of The Church and no Civil Power may cross the threshold of Church property without the express permission of the local Church Bishop. That's why the worst of the worst pedophile priests are put up in posh protective premises like this one run by the Servants of the Paraclete, which is merely one of countless sacrosanct Church Sanctuaries around the globe. In reality, there is a GLOBAL underground railroad for anything that The Church wants to use it for; pedophiles being only one of them.

    The Papacy needs to devise a very clear, open and transparent policy which will involve a step-by-step process which will outline the actions to be taken as soon as either the Pope or the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF), initiates a Canonical investigation into the allegations. In the 1st instance, that priest would be required to meet with, either his local bishop or, if a priest within a religious order, then he reports to the provincial of that order once weekly. This priest would be removed from any ministry involving minors until the outcome of any Canonical investigation. Should the local law enforcement agencies arrest this priest before the conclusion of the canonical investigation, the church will continue its own investigation. Should the canonical investigation find a criminal case to answer, it should instruct the local bishop to hand the matter over to the authorities and alert the local police services. Should this priest be found guilty by the canonical court, this priest should be immediately forbidden from all ministry and fast-tracked to be laicised. If this priest is found guilty of a criminal act, then the relevant legislation should be applied like any other case of this nature

Despite the damage control and secrecy that has been going on for years the cancer that was growing on the church finally erupted and we were shocked and outraged that this abuse reached all the way up into the hierarchy. I am not saying this in a defending way at all, this is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. But, where I was raised (eastern catholic) I was aware that not all church leaders are righteous, not every pope is a saint, not everyone goes into religious life for the real spiritual purpose.. so therefore I think I agree with some comments that the problem is with the fact that someone is a pedophile and a sexual predator rather than their position and faith, of course it makes a difference and it adds to the story, but it’s not just the Catholic Church and it’s not just religious organizations and religions overall. Some bosses are sexual predators, teachers, caretakers..etc. and people always blame them (as they should) not their god nor their order. The way this was covered up is disgusting and again I do not agree with it or support it in the slightest, but it goes back to my point of that I believe that the core of the church is Jesus and those who follow his example, which not everyone does and the problem should be with them ! Finally, I think a part of it is for the government to blame too, they deemed him not fit for standing trial plus that statue of limitations thing, they allowed him to stay in that secluded area.. there are so many problems within the government too !

    I thought it was a good idea to put them on an island or even a place like this in Missouri. I did not know a priest had done that before. This way it doesn’t cost tax payers anything to house, feed and protect them since they won’t be in general cell population. I DO strongly agree there needs to be conditions, however such as not being able to just come and go, it should be like house arrest. If they did leave, they would be a fugitive, arrested and brought to SECULAR courts, which would likely keep most of them there. Also no minors allowed on the premises below 18 yrs old. Things like that. They could easily support themselves, say Mass for the deceased, ask for donations - they may be corrupted and sinful but their ordination by itself is still in effect. They could also be like Japanese prison system growing their own food. Honestly, it is a good idea overall, just needs to have some policy corrections.

    The circumcision thing is very controversial. It was believed, way back when, that it prevented blood clots and saved lives. It it now done with a suction device, as there is a bases of the belief that was accurate - suction can prevent blood clots.

    I love my faith handed down from Jesus Christ. I have NEVER put a cardinal, bishop, or priest on a pedestal - that place is reserved for only God. Therefore, I do not fall under the spell of their position....they are like every other human being.... untrustworthy until proven otherwise. A lesson taught to me when my brother got expelled for decking the catholic priest who was the headmaster with a desk who tried to molest him and my mother never believed him. His best friend got sexually abused by the same man a year later and his mother believed him and my brother and that man ended up in jail...
