Thank you for bringing this up. I ran into this laptop while browsing in Walmart, of all places!! But I was blown away by the specs, the screen quality, and the fact that it's touch screen. It's insane value for money! I was wondering Josh, have you been keeping up with all the drama surrounding ASUS quality control w the ROG Ally and one of its motherboards? I was wondering if you thought that other people's concerns on ASUS's qc are well founded, or whether you felt it was overblown/could not carry into all of their products.

Oh boy where do I start. I bought an Asus VivoBook Pro 14X OLED (N7400PC) in December 2021. In March of 2023, it started having weird grinding fan noises. Turns out one of them got knackered. Not to mention, by this time it already had issues with its bluetooth not working and other software problems (might have to do with Windows 11 tho).
In any case, soon after, its motherboard commited suicide with potential dead battery.
I got it repaired at a third part shop (since it was conveniently *just* out of warranty and the official Asus service center said that the charge would be almost 80% the cost of the unit for mobo replacement as they don't do IC level repairs, lol).
It worked for maybe 3 weeks after which the unit simply didn't power on.
Took it back to the repair shop and they said that the CPU is damaged and nothing can be done at this point.
I filed consumer complaint, wrote to the CEO office, tagged on twitter as it cost $1150 (which is not an insignificant amount of money...for a student...in India) but to no avail.
After more than a month of back and forth with customer service over phone / email and what not, they offered to give me a 30% compensation on replacement part (yea no thanks) and that's about it.
No explanation as to why it occurred in the first place and no analysis of the aftermath whatsoever.
      They simply don't care.
Upon visiting the r/Asus subreddit, it is clear that I am not the only one. I think the reason they're able to offer great specs at these competitive prices is by compromising on quality of components and not because they had some manufacturing tech breakthrough or something.
Of course, a survey might shed a better light but this would be my preliminary take on all of this

    • @anmolagrawal5358
      @anmolagrawal5358 Před 10 měsíci +3

@seaworth3382 Ah yes, the repair person did mention the MOSFETs going off. You might be right. Can you link to the source of this btw? I would want to read up on that lore.
This was not a TUF laptop, but a mid-premium segment laptop (higher end VivoBook). To do this in such a model is inexcusable.
That isn't to say doing it in lower tier models is justified, just that this is even worse when consumer is ready to pay up a premium price, expecting a product to match.
      What a shame

So the Yoga's build quality is definitely better, I'm sure it will last me a whole lot longer. The screen's fine, battery life is good, and the CPU does the job. I'd definitely get the 14X now that I know about it though, the price is lower, screen is much better, CPU is more powerful, and even the hinge design should be better.

They are far better at optimization of software for the hardware and battery life, BUT, lots of softwares are not compatible with MacOS as of now, as they are made for Windows which is based on another architecture altogether. I guess its more of a pick your poison, take a MacBook for better performance at the risk of losing your 'freedom' as its a closed system, or look at Windows laptops which are less power efficient but have a wider compatibility with softwares and of course, gaming. Also most Windows laptops are nicely upgradeable when it comes to RAM and SSD.

Since my uses cases are lighter - web browsing and ssh'ing to the cloud for development, this has been a really good laptop for me. As Josh describes, the battery life is fantastic (even more so, since I find performance fine for me on whisper mode ... which is quite quiet). This is my first laptop with a touchscreen and I've found it occasionally useful, and first one with an OLED screen which I find to be day in and day out fantastic. My only real negative is that I'm coming from an older Thinkpad which has an absolutely fantastic keyboard, so while the keyboard is good, it is not as good as older Thinkpads that have a ton of travel.

Love the Review Josh! Been interested in getting a laptop recently, and have been watching reviews for the past few months trying to narrow down what I want. I have to say your reviews are some of the best, if not THE BEST I've seen. I do programming, and your Best Laptop for Programming in 2023: ULTIMATE GUIDE has been my staple I keep falling back to when comparing new laptops I see / find out about. I was wondering though. I have a company 15.6" HP Elitebook and I absolutely love the larger screen size. Are you interested / plan on reviewing any of the larger laptop screen models? I've used a 14" in the past, but after using a 15.6 with a full keyboard and number-pad, I find it hard to go back down

Great video! I own the 14x with 16GB RAM and the i7 and it's absolutely blistering in its power when plugged in, and isn't too much a slouch even in its power saving modes while on battery.
I honestly couldn't be happier with this device and I think it might become my favorite laptop I've ever owned. I got it on sale for $799 and the value is unbelievable.
I've been recommending this computer to everyone. If someone is gonna go Windows, this is on the very short list of devices you NEED to consider.

    • @PeteOliva
      @PeteOliva Před 6 měsíci

@@itsyugentsuki This model I own is the Q420V. ASUS makes builds exclusively for Best Buy in North America, which I believe are the ones with the Q prefix. It's the equivalent to the UX3404 model, which is mainly what it is known as internationally. That's how I've always understood it. Bought a lot of ASUS computers at Best Buy over the years and that's typically the same confusion I used to go through. But I would find there was always a UXxxx model that was practically the same spec wise as the Best Buy model I had bought or was shopping for. It might have just had a different RAM configuration or might have or have not included a pen or something like that.

As mentioned in another comment, I wish there was more regulation regarding prices outside the US on products. Every company bases their offerings on it, but even in Canada it can easily be 1.5-2x the price for products, and that's if you're lucky. Great video review as always though, still helpful to get quality hands on reviews just in case.
There also needs to be more regulation around product offerings in different regions. We actually discussed this before on a laptop sale post, but finding the exact same spec can sometimes be impossible and confusing, even for an IT professional like myself.

Mildly disappointed by AMD because of their lackluster performance and especially misleading naming scheme (it also took me a while to realize its a previous gen CPU), even though that AMD doesn't even need to do this deception.
Asus, although they had some big drama with their desktop mainboards and BIOS, seems to be crushing it in the mobile market. The handheld Asus ROG Ally offers amazing performance for quite the good price. So I am especially keen to see what Asus can do with a new AMD CPU on the laptop market very soon!

For over three decades, I have worked with both Windows and Macs--Windows because I had to run AutoCAD and Revit and Macs because they always have been the superior system. I've always been puzzled when people talk about switching from one system to the other on a whim. The Asus Zenbook is a wonderful machine. Microsoft has made laptops that rival MacBooks in design and quality. But it's about more than hardware. Windows and MacOS, while similar, are distinctly different. You cannot blithely switch back and forth from one to the other. It's not just the operating systems, it's the software that runs exclusively on one OS or the other. Many of the apps that I love run only on Macs. There isn't a Windows laptop in existence that could replace my MacBook.

A bunch of ppl also depend on software that is very difficult to run on macs. Although recent advances in emulation mean that 90% of Windows apps should run fine on macOS. It's only games and very specific apps that need Intel XEON and other instruction sets that won't work on mac now.

Hard to believe there aren't more comments about this. Windows vs. MacOS is apples vs. oranges. Furthermore, the only true freedom comes when you abandon both for Linux, which you can run on pretty-much any hardware you choose. So, yes, these Asus laptops are great value (and they aren't the only ones - consider the HP Victus series) but the first thing to do is scrap Windows and install Linux. Otherwise, just shell out for a Macbook.

great laptops but if the fan noise is noticeable in 2023 that is a no go for me. It is unacceptable in 2023 laptops needs to keep the fan on while web browsing or just doing office task. I have been watching AMD laptop reviews and apparently all of them has "bad" fan noise. It does not turn off the fan in any case and they are audible... It is a shame because these Asus laptops are great.

Exactly. As innovative as Asus can be, they’re still a second tier PC brand compared to the likes of Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Apple doesn’t really care about them either so they’ll pay even less deference to Asus.

It will, if ASUS keeps this up, I was in the market for a thin and light utrabook and chose the Zenbook 14 over the M2 15 Air, I could buy two of these for the cost of one Air. Its not even close. More people will come to find out about the Zenbook 14 if they keep this up. I am not saying they are going to grind Apple to dust of course.

I'm a windows user eversince a kid (win95), but the battery life and performance (on batt) just blows the competition it's not even close.
I already switched to macbookjust this yr and I never bring my charger whith me. With my previous windows laptops I always have to and performance is sluggish on batt. 8hrs with mediocre performance vs 15hrs easily with no drop in performance.
This is how a laptop should be, not worrying where to find socket to top up the batt while at work.
I still have a windows desktop for all my gaming and some tasks that require bigger screens, but when I leave the house the macbook just gets the job done with their new m chips.

I got my used LG Gram 17Z90P (i7-1195G7) in mint condition for $500 bucks on eBay because I was itching for a 3lb-ish ultrabook with a huge screen. The speakers are meh and the keyboard keys get a bit oily and sticky faster than I'd like but otherwise it's great for the weight, battery life, and display!
But if I could get the performance of the Zenbook 14X *AND* the 17-inch display for $700 I totally would.

I am considering the asus zenbook 14 amd 7 series (In specific; the asus zenbook 14 um3402ya -kp504w)
After watching your video I am left with the question if this laptop works okay as well for using some photoshop / indesign overall; adobe programs ?
I prefer this laptop (zenbook 14) over the other the x one for its incredible battery and portability which are 2 specs I want in a laptop. I would use it for watching films and series by night and during the day for perhaps; mailing, some webbrowsing / study and now and then for myself or content; photoshop, indesign and/or illustrator. (With in the back of the mind; working outdoor, traveling and backpacking in the future)
It would help me out so much knowing if the Zenbook 14 is capable of doing this !
PS; And Thanks so much for the insights in this video.
