    You are a good professional reviewer, I'm really frustrated with all the major youtube tech channels who are now more focused on the entertainment value of tech reviews rather than providing good DETAILED and nuanced information with strict focus on making a good purchase decision. If someone just wants surface level information or entertainment they may consider watching the major youtube channels, however for genuine buyers in the market it is reviews like yours which help the most. Great video, as always. The only thing I want to point out is that in the intro it seems like a lot of apps on Windows don't have native Arm support, but considering that this kind of laptops are not aimed at the professional audience that works with "niche" or very intensive applications, the selection is quite decent. For example, all the mainstream browsers are native, Chrome, Edge, Mozzilla, Brave and Opera. All the 365 office suite, the mainstream streaming apps like Prime Video, Netflix, Paramount, Disney+,Spotify, even some coding programs like Visual Studio and Slack, or for foto and video editing there are, Lightroom, Photoshop and DaVinci Resolve with Premiere Pro coming later in the summer together with all the other apps showed during the Computex 2024. So i think that for the mainstream audience, there are plenty of apps that won't require running through the emulation layer and so, IF the X Elite and Plus will achieve the performance Qualcomm is showing, a lot of Windows users will benefit from this kind of laptops, as always we need to wait and see how they will be in the real world, i'll wait for your reviews :)

    I came to the same conclusion as you Josh, and preordered the Lenovo Slim 7x. It has the fewest compromises, with a nice OLED screen, huge battery, great keyboard, and you can get the 32GB/1TB configuration for cheap. I'm a Linux user who won't really get to run my OS on it for a few months (kernel 6.11), but I'm tired of being disappointed by x86 laptops. I'm looking forward to testing it asap. The Surface Laptop and Galaxy Book4 Edge were my next choices, but I wanted an OLED screen and the memory upgrade.

      it always has been so with the normal cpus. In the end as he said you have to take the laptop with the bast value and "tuning". fo example DELLs run realy hot because they push the limits, HP had crappy heatsinks ecc, Lenovo and Asus seemed the more balanced ones, also too light laptops lack of rigidity so focusing too much on the weight isn't a good thing

  • @leonardwise5807
    @leonardwise5807 Před 6 dny +2

    Great review again as my journey to find a laptop begins again. I chose the Edge first and ordered the 84 spec. My second choice was the Dell. It's the only option with the 84 spec, which will have higher CPU performance and 15 percent higher GPU performance. Samsung designed the internals from the ground up, so hopefully, it will be even better performance. It's bacically a Mac Book Air 15 with better ports, performance, and gorgeous 120 htz OLED screen. We will see next week. The Dell you can get the 2.8 k tandem OLED same as I Pads but not as bright and 60hz none the less should be high resolution and great picture quality. This model can only be purched at Best Buy. All the Snapdragons come with a free 50 inch TV at Best Buy. If I don't like the Snapdragon or it doesn't meet my needs, the Asus P 16 with 4k OLED Arm chip and same design as the G 16 looks interesting, plus a 4070 and new 3rd fan design 32 gigs of ram for pre order at 1899 at Best Buy.The reason to purchase next generation chips is they will be a big upgrade over previous generation and more efficent.

      Well, your in for a bad time ... Welcome to the wonderful world of laptops where you can not control the fan curve yourself (typical for Lenovo), and with build in "surface temperature sensor" that triggers fan spins at 45C, even if your CPU etc is all cool as a cucumber. I have given up on laptops after half a dozen attempts of finding actual laptops that stay quiet (aka no fan) on basic browsing / office tasks.
      And no, it does not get better, frankly, for what your paying with laptops, most of them are kind of bad in build quality aka user control over the device. Locked down bios, no fan control, fan curves that are just BAD (loud spin up and direct stops, cycling effects up and down = drives people crazy) etc...
      If you work in a quiet room, and not in a office, well,... get a macbook or maybe those new snapdragon x. Ironically, Macbooks are the only ones that i have seen that are passive (not counting cripped surface books), or have fans curves where they allow the CPU to hit 99C in favor of much more gentle / quiet fan profiles. All the rest is just "we do not want to pay for heat damage, so we put the fan curves aggressive so less devices die over time ... want to buy our 3 year warranty?!!".

    I'll most likely buy the OLED version of the Surface Pro tablet. I understand the risk. But as a photographer and video editor, I need a device with touch + pen support. I have a laptop now that supports both, but battery life is terrible. Since Microsoft has already confirmed native Lightroom and DaVicni Resolve support, I'm good with taking the risk. We use Office 365 and Teams at work, but know those will also be natively supported as well. Only thing I'm waiting for is confirmation that performance + battery life is both solid... even close to an M3 will be fine with me.

    Ive gone Samsung as the integration with my s24 should be very usefull. Conveniently it was also the cheapest of all the launch laptops thanks to their employee discount scheme and voucher. 1100gbp for a 3k oled and those looks was a great deal in my view however the max 16gb ram concerns me for future proofing. Assuming the processor lives up to the hype.

    Regarding your statement on running AI locally, it is certainly possible to run decent AI, especially llms locally. I have a m2 pro mac mini, and can run Lama 3 (roughly equivalent to gpt3.5) locally very fast (`30 tokens/sec), even more than what you usually get runnning on the cloud, while only using ~20% of processing power. Free could services usually don’t give you a lot of computing power.

    Does your warning about the worthlessness of onboard AI claims also extend to Intel Ultra’s new NPU? I had already decided to wait until next year’s models cuz I don’t like buying first gen products, but I was still hopeful that it was worth looking forward to, since Ultra is built around a whole new architecture in order to include the NPU. Improved onboard AI capability would actually be meaningful for me, as I’m a heavy user of Photoshop’s latest machine learning features while also benefiting from Intel’s edge in single core performance.

    My only qualms with the Lenovo is the 90hz screen. Even lower end smart phones at this point have 120hz panels. If you are using a cell phone at 120hz, and go back and forth from your phone to your laptop, as many do, you will be able to see the choppiness. All in what you are a custom to. All of these will be on sale by Christmas for $100-300 off their initial offerings so if you aren't a tech enthusiast, just wait. For the most part though, these will serve most people for general every day use. It will be nice to have a Windows laptop you can actually put on your lap.
