As a proud Swan, this is a moment I'll never forget. Unfortunately we couldn't get it done the week after... I was at the parents place with mum and dad. Never seen dad cry before, but he did that night. And come 2005 he finally saw his beloved Swans break that drought, he cried that day too...
I come back here every so often just to feel something
One of the greatest games of footy ever played.
I was at that game. Best game I've ever seen, unbeatable.
Probably the most exciting behind in AFL history.
Also Vandemeers this year against lions in the semi final
Barry Breen 1966 too
living in cairns we didn't have any tv coverage then or radio coverage.
i sat out in my car and on the radio picked up the call from sydney.
i flew down to melbourne the following friday and saw the grand final.
i still live in cairns and 5 more grand finals later i have seen 2 premierships.
go sydney.
Now that’s a real Bloods fan !!
nice story. you might see another premiership this year, who knows?
Unfortunately it wasn’t Sydney’s day today.
I just wish swans fans would cheer like they did back when games like this played. They won’t even chant unless they’re in the cheer squad.
I was at the SCG for this match, which was my second AFL match I attended. I missed getting to the Grand Final because I had to fly back to the USA. funnily enough, this match was our featured match of the round on our 1-hour highlights show we had at the time on a 1-week time delay in the USA, hosted by Rex Hunt. I remember this so clearly from watching it so much that I could recite Sandy’s, Robbo’s, and Healey’s commentary of the match by memory. Phenomenal match, which I used to introduce my NFL loving friends to the AFL.
Free flowing footy, umpires letting the play go. Almost a rarity these days.
Brian Zhang after watching footy in 2018, I kept hearing an imaginary whistle every time contact was made 😂
umpires bouncing the ball at every stoppage
look, sydney supporter and thoroughly of the belief premlinary finals are the most memorable fixtures but this is the absolute pinnacle of my life supporting the swans (followed by 2012).
1990s, golden era of footy, plugger, a time when - even if novelty -the SCG atmosphere (96/97) was truly special and immpecably called by sandy and ian robertson (flawless).
think of prelims - north v cats 94, crows v dogs 97, dees v hawks 87, power v saints 04, blues v bombers 99 (greatest game of footy ive ever seen), hawks v pies 11, bombers v crows 93 and obviously more, but they are the greatest and arguably more satisfying than flags.
being lucky enough to win flags in my life time has been special but the realisation you come back and do the exact same thing in 6 months with no promotion/relegation means prelims leave the greatest feeling for supporters from my perspective
how's that kicking style of Lockett's? Perfection.
Witnessed this one in Kings Cross Hotel on a bender. All time! Plugga pull a blinda!!!
Its important to note that Essendon shouldn't have been playing in this game anyway since the would have been eliminated by West Coast in Perth the week before, but West Coast were forced to play their HOME final at the MCG because of VicBias in the AFL which was even worse in the 90s than it is now.
Same with 1999 Carlton being in the Grand Final. Lost their Qualifying Final, played an 'away' final against West Coast at the MCG and won, and then beat the Bombers for a spot in the Grand Final. But then you realise, if the Vic Bias wasn't around back then, maybe the '96 and '99 classic Preliminary Finals may never have happened
It also happened the year before when Adelaide was flogged by Melbourne but got to stay in the finals. Thankfully they changed the finals format to something fairer.
The MCC had a deal with the AFL, from the days of when VFL Park was supposed to host the Grand Final, to have one final a week. After Brisbane's 2004 mess up the league changed it.
Remember this Steve😀😀😀
What a great moment that night.
GO SWANS!🔴⚪️
i remember an nrl player said on the news a week later that it was the biggest party in Sydney he'd ever seen... the whole state went beserk 😆
I remember being 8 years old watching this as a mad bombers fan. I went to my room and sulked for the rest of the day after this.
My revenge was watching them get thrashed by North Melbourne in the finals.
As a Swans fan and a now former Sydneysider, The sad thing was had we won the 1996 Grand Final, I've go no doubt Sydney would've become an AFL city such was the pandemonium the club made in the city at the time. Coupled on the back of rugby league tearing itself apart during the height of the ARL/Super League War.
Still sulking since 01
@@JewJam69 LOL 🤣
I don’t think it would have been that easy. The hype still would have died down when they failed to get to the grand final the following year. Sydney has too much history with Rugby League for it to go away that easily. The Super League crap certainly put a big dent in the game that didn’t recover for years. That all said, look at the
attendance of Swans games now. It may still be a niche sport in NSW but what a large niche it is.
Ironic that the greatest goalscorer of all time, his most important kick was a point.
Now you know why it's called Plugger's Point.
Wow
Ahh - the days when the clock didn't stop for balls up
I love the swans nice win by one point
You are oooof
Swans
