Find and Catch Spring Bass | Tokyo Rig Tips for Tough Bites

- As anglers, we're usually optimistic that bass will be going gangbusters. More typically, we have to grind it out for a handful of good bites. Wired2fish contributor Dan Quinn has such a day and shares his system for pitching soft plastics into bushes and laydowns using the Tokyo Rig.
FEATURED TACKLE:

• WEIGHT - VMC Tungsten Slider Weight, 3/8-ounce: wired2.fish/VMC-SliderWeight
• PLASTIC - 13 Fishing Rabbit Ear Tail Invader: wired2.fish/13FishingInvader
• LINE - Sufix Advance Fluorocarbon, 17lb: wired2.fish/AdvanceFluorocarbon
• ROD - 13 Fishing Omen Black 3 Casting Rod, 7'3" MH: wired2.fish/OmenBlack3-Castin...
• REEL - 13 Fishing Inception Casting Reel, 8.1:1: wired2.fish/13FishingInception
• SPINNERBAIT - Terminator Pro Series Spinnerbait, Double Colorado: wired2.fish/TerminatorProSpinn...
Spring is known for rapid shifts in water temperature, and a fast warmup isn't always ideal. Dan explains how an 8-degree water temp increase in just two days shut down his spinnerbait bite. His solution was to slow down by fishing prime laydowns and bushes on banks leading into spawning pockets.
While many pitching setups with work, Quinn prefers a Tokyo Rig and thin plastic around hard cover for its easy-in, easy-out attributes. He recommends fishing the outside first, then making a few pitches into the heart of the cover. Negative bass will often position on the bottom in the thickest portion of the cover. Quinn shares his go-to rod setup and why he prefers straight fluorocarbon in this scenario.

Very good video! You really gave some good tips!
I just bought the rig. Wanting to use it soon. Thanks for sharing!
Any time!
Loved the video but whenever im flipping near trees or bushes i always use a leader on braid. So many times ive lost over 20 feet of floro when i would run straight floro. It always seems to break at a nic up your line and after a day of pitch and flipping wood you have only 2/3 of a spool left. Saves alot of money and you gain alot more sensitivity out of braid.
Nice video good tips
Glad to hear it Jose, appreciate you watching.
Great catch brother man.. love wired2fish .. even tho I never win any giveaways. Lol 😆
Precisely how is this contraption with a swinging flopping weighted arm and multiple connections a "real streamlined presentation"? Streamlined means more efficient and effective, faster, increased ease of movement, and simpler. Compared to what exactly?
It's more streamlined when compared to a drop shot. I can't think of any other bait presentations that are similar to those two options though. Technically a flipping jig is the most streamlined in what he's fishing, but the Tokyo rig keeps the bait out of the mud, and it's easier to fish in place because of the metal arm.
As it falls, the weight is on the bottom like a keel, with the bait in tow. The line remains straight to the rod throughout. This makes it an extremely efficient presentation for penetrating and dropping into openings in wood or grass. Mike Iaconelli provides a solid overview in this video: czcams.com/video/6EAmFFtT_ak/video.html
I love the Tokyo rig, only thing you really can’t do with it is skip it.
Good to know brother because I would of tried.
Jika rig is also not chill for skipping i find. I flip and pitch a lot with a jika rig for pike!
man rapala REALLY wants you to adopt the tokyo rig.....well, I tried and found about 50 different ways that it's inferior to nearly every other way to rig a soft plastic bait. save your money, guys.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Gary! Thats a very unique opinion!
Thought it was a fishing video but then I watched it and realized it was a talking video. Can y'all do more fishing and a little less talking?
God, I was thinking the same. So much talking it’s annoying af.
