When I was watching the new Sonic movie I had to ask myself, "MatPat, why is Sonic on a road trip?" We all know that Sonic's big thing is running. He can move way faster than a car, which makes the choice of making his big theatrical release a road trip movie SUPER weird. Theorist, today I am peeling back the layers of this "plot hole" to figure out if it was a MISTAKE or, perhaps, proof that it really is about the friends you make along the way.

I feel like Sonic just stayed with Donutlord because at heart, he’s a kid. He doesn’t want to be alone. And really, he doesn’t want to leave Earth. So he’s purposefully dragging his feet on leaving and spending as much time as possible trying to stay here. And he stays in the car with him because this is person he feels closest with, even at the beginning of the movie, this is his dad in his mind.
This is how I took it...only way for it to make sense

I appreciate how MatPat calculated Sonic’s run to the Pacific Ocean and back, but it looks like there are some mountains there too, so I think he would have to calculate the height of the mountains that Sonic would have run up and back down again as well

I don’t know if I’m the first to notice this but this video was uploaded on February 29th, 2020, if you’re confused, 2020 was a leap year and leap year’s only come every 4 years (next one is next year, 2024), so how does CZcams count this video as 2 years old but February 29th only comes every 4 years? (I should clarify this comment is sorta a joke but I just wanted to make this fact aware bc idk if anyone noticed this in the comments👍)

What if Sonic knows he could get to San Francisco really fast but chose not to because he didnt want to be lonely anymore, hence traveling with Tom.

This is what I believe to be true, though Matpat's theory isn't incorrect in my opinion. I think it comes down to the fact that in this movie, Sonic is much more of a kid and as such might have simply not been confident enough to explore such a distant place on his own.
Montana is his home, and he hasn't really left it from what we're shown. So going to some unknown place far away would not only be scary, but he would also have to find a way back home (if we're assuming he's using his rings only in emergencies and doesn't use the rings to get back to Montana).
While he probably knows that he's faster than Tom's truck, he sees this as an opportunity to fill the empty place in his heart. He's basically getting the father he never had AND that father is making sure that he gets to San Fran and back safely.

My guess is that Sonic knows he could *maybe* get to San Francisco on his own in a much quicker way, but if he did he could be taking the risk of Eggman or someone else finding him much faster if they read his speed level or something like that
So he sticks by Tom’s side with the fake excuse that he doesn’t know where SF is because traveling by car wouldn’t raise awareness
With the added bonus that he gets to spend time with his father figure
But hey! That’s just a theory, a comment theory!
If Tom just added in "and go south when you get to the coast" then the entire movie would've been over. The entire plot only happens because he's horrible at giving directions.

Sonic 'could' have found his rings on his own but:
1. Everyone tends to think and do irrational things when they are scared. This is probably magnified because Sonic has no one.
2. He wanted to make a friend and took this chance to road trip with Donut Lord to do just that.
3. He wasn't in full control of all of his powers. In fact, he just learned to Time Stop and Spin Attack from the film.
4. This Sonic isn't the seasoned hero from the games, and this is his origin story.
I think bowling ball hedgehog was the only thing he'd learned.
I thought those scenes were just sonics super fast reaction time and him moving in accordance to that speed. Never knew it was him just stopping time.

I think when Sonic says he "can't do" it alone, he means emotionally more so than physically. He can't wander around the country reaching dead ends a thousand times in a row. He's not used to failure.

When running as fast as he does, how much calories is he burning?
How often would he need to stop and eat running every street in the US?
Maybe riding in the car is faster over all because he doesn't have to stop every hour and nap for three hours after eating 10k calories of food.
Plus he's only ever shown to run at top speeds for what in real time would be about 2 minutes max, so we don't know how long he can keep up the sonic speeds.

As someone who lives litterally 30min away from Deer Lodge, MT I am SUPER excited that my (almost) little town is being talked about!. ALSO, the prison is super cool and not used anymore, it's just there as a tourist attraction, and right next door is a cool car museum that is honestly fun to visit even if cars aren't your thing. ALSO, ALSO there used the be the most amazing diner there that had the BEST tomatoe soup but they closed sadly a couple years ago.

1. Sonic accelerates so fast… how fast does he go and how much energy would his legs have to handle the acceleration?
2. If he went in … 3 speed stages where in stage 1 he just chill zoom 2 kinda zoom zoom and 3 full speed zoom zoom, considering his size if he were to… cover the whole earth instead of following a road how long would it take him to go from pole to pole?
3. If Sonic is his canonical weight, and he goes as fast as he goes, if he slams into an object how much destruction would it cause? (I know him moving at the speed already causes a massive shockwave every step.) but he IS made of… flesh right? Would his 30kg ball of fur disintegrate if he crashed into something big and heavy? 😮

He's a kid who wanted to spend time with a person he thought was a cool dude. He had lots of things he wanted to do before he left Earth. He wanted to start a bar fight, he wanted to do a slam dunk, and he wanted to make a friend. He didn't want to be alone.
Also, we know from the movie that Sonic does get tired. Sonic couldn't have been running for 4 hours straight.
