Another interesting fact, Ben Schwartz was originally just a placeholder until they found a different celebrity to voice Sonic. But they were so impressed with his performance in test footage that they gave him the job!

This is why constructive criticism is so important. This literally saved the ENTIRE MOVIE. More corporations should take constructive criticism to improve.
People think it's bad but it's actually really and i mean REALLY good it can save the movie
While you don't have to listen to everything people say it's important to be willing to listen and see what they have to say otherwise you can miss something important.
while not quite the same as here the guy who makes dilber once just made a cat show up for a few jokes about cats and keyboards and he got hundreds of emails from people saying they love and want more catbert.
the thing was he hadn't named the character or meant for him to be a character, but decided if hundreds of your fans give your character the same name at the same time it's probably a good idea to keep the character.

I think the reason why Jim Carrey was chosen for the role of Doctor Robotnik was because his daughter said that he would make a great Sonic villain due to him trying to play Sonic games only to not be very good at them which gave him the inspiration for such a role to begin with.

Hopefully whoever mandated that first design was fired because in hindsight it could've wrecked Paramount so bad. Fast forward to this year and we've learned that Paramount is not doing so great money wise, so imagine this context without the success of the first movie. The only hit they would've had was Top gun and nothing else, if I were Jeff Fowler I'd be reminding them constantly at what they almost did.
Right when the redesign came out, one of the former CGI animators said that Paramount pushed for the realistic Sonic, knowing fans wouldn't like it, but figured the public audiences wouldn't care, comparing it to TMNT live action movie in 2014, the original vision and concept art for the movie shows that the director and teams vision was a traditional Sonic. The artist even quoted a tweet with the trailer of the redesign saying "yeah, pretty much what we wanted to do in the first place"
Another example of Interference. Luckily the original design, and the fans, won this round.
I TOLD you that it was because of "lIvE aCtIoN cArToOn ChArAcTeR rEaLiSm" that was so popular in the late '00s-when the redesign happened.
As I always say, that was Paramount's biggist misstep regarding the movie since the Sonic franchise hits tens of millions of people right in the most important spot a movie like Sonic would need to draw from, nostalgic childhood memories. More importantly, Paramount forgot that Sonic's popularity was so large at one point that he was competing with Mario for awhile and was popular enough to the point where the genesis games are considered treasured childhood memories for many a person who grew up in the 80s and 90s, so even people who grew up with the Sonic games from that era who are casual fans would take one look at the redesign and say 'Not. My. Sonic.' And those are just casual fans. The hardcore Sonic fans would have said easily the worst thing (and redesign, depending on how you feel about the continuity) since Sonic Boom.

Movie execs baffle me. If public audiences wouldn't care, why wouldn't you just go with the design people already like??? Like, there's no way that people who weren't complete and utter weirdos were going to be impressed by the design for its "realism" or find any appeal in them making a blue, bipedal hedgehog look more like a mutant ape.
I think whoever made that call should be studied by scientists.

The Sonic movie is the shining glowing example that if you want to do a movie or TV show inspired from a game series, you stay faithful to design choices or story queues from the games.
I'm looking at you Resident Evil.

Don't know if you have seen the Mario Movie, but I think it's a great example just because it's so faithful to its source material, though it helps that Nintendo themselves were involved in the production and gave Illumination concept art, as opposed to how SEGA didn't seem to be that involved with Paramount aside from some guidelines like not showing Sonic's feet.
Now I wonder if Paramount is considering making a Sonic animated movie after finishing Sonic 3, I mean they're releasing an animated Ninja Turtles movie this year and are developing an animated Transformers movie as well. I'd say Sonic works better as animation

It’s amazing how one movie redesign can save an entire franchise, whether it’s cinematic or part of a video game.
And this is why you should always listen to constructive criticism instead of getting in your feelings having a ego thinking you’re better than anyone. People need to understand this.

Agreed; and don’t be afraid to voice calm, level-headed criticism at a work in process, hoping the creators will fix it without a prompt to do so.
Moral of the story: Movies are like Food in a way, it's not just the quality / taste that is important but the presentation as well to get people to want to go anywhere near it.

This is the only time something sonic related got good criticism that made something better.
Sonic the hedgehog movie is one of those rare moment where you want this movie to succeed because they actually listened to the fan. It's beautiful.

I remember my reaction towards the Blue Blur's first trailer. I believe I was either in my final year of Middle School or my Freshman Year of High School. The trailer had dropped sometime in the morning, around 8, maybe 9:00. I saw the thumbnail, thought it had to be clickbait or a prank, but no. It was official. Curious, I saw the trailer and it instantly colonized my brain. That day I was replaying it, I sent it to my parents, showed it to anyone who would put up with my newly developed hyperfixation. I didn't care if Sonic looked like something from under your bed or hidden deep within your closet, I just saw the end where it reveals the release date, glitches a bit, then the glitching escalates to reveal Jim Carrey wearing a game accurate Dr. Robotnik/Eggman costume, beautiful mustache and all. That was when I knew that this movie was gonna be GOOOOOD.
Fast forward to 2021-ish. One day I was minding my business, working on schoolwork during a free period while looking at CZcams and stuff when I get a notification from Twitter that Idris Elba posted two words and a Sonic 2 poster: "Knock Knock".
It took me 5 seconds to drink in the whiplash, and about 10 minutes of me squealing like a little girl for me to tell EVERYONE I KNOW about this.
Imagine what tails and knuckles would of like if they kept this design

@@goojo173 True. And weirdly enough, they originally planned to have lizards tribe before Echidna tribe to search for Sonic's powers. That's very, very early development though, since the farthest that got into it was just artworks, no process of animating lizard tribe. Good thing they end up choosing Echidna tribe since it's more faithful to the Sonic games lore and forshadows Knuckles in the sequel. And it's also a good thing they redesign Sonic and Echidna tribe as well.

I think the moral of this story is, if you take risks & don’t get defensive when dealing with criticism, the results could lead to something great.
Paramount & Jeff Fowler could’ve handled Sonic’s design the same way the Ghostbusters reboot & Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop handled their criticism by saying something like “everyone who’s upset are pathetic neckbeards & man-children who need to grow up,” causing the movie to turn into an overblown culture war. But instead, they took the response seriously and tried to be respectful to the fans and the source, leading it to be the start of Sonic’a renaissance
Honestly I couldn’t see them making another Sonic Movie if they kept the old design. And if they would, boy oh boy… Poor Knuckles

This is why movies like Sonic, Bumblebee and Ghostbusters Afterlife show us that we need more directors that care about the source material that their making instead of people that don’t like the team behind the Halo show.
To me, because of this move of redesigning Sonic, it created a new impact in the entertainment industry. Sonic has changed the game for them and now they know that we call the shots.

From my perspective, the movie went from "This is gonna be a terrible experience, and Jim Carrey as Eggman is going to be carrying the film" to "This is gonna be an amazing experience, and Jim Carrey as Eggman is going to be carrying the film".

While we've never seen them, I've heard before that concept artists tried to get something closer to the design we actually got but executives insisted they knew better.
I just really love Ben Schwartz voicing Sonic, he just has the voice that sounds right to me. He isn't over doing the nasally "surfer dude" voice Roger Craig Snith does, and I wish this was the Sonic they went with in the games as well. This was my favorite rendition of Sonic I've seen in a long time.

Well, Roger Craig Smith does have his moments like in the Sonic Boom tv show when Sonic was at some therapy session and had an outburst which actually was pretty well acted. So yeah, it's not the VA's fault it's the script writers and those telling the script writers what to write if you think about it.

THIS is what happens when you actually listen to and cater to fans. Sonic not only is gonna' get an entire cinematic universe thanks to the re-design, but on top of that the success of the Sonic movie got SEGA to finally get their heads out of their asses and take Sonic seriously again. It's like Paramount literally breathed new life into sonic. And how did they do that? By ACTUALLY catering to what fans wanted, they wanted to see sonic, and they actually GOT sonic. It's truly an awe-inspiring thing to see a franchise fall so low, only to climb and rise back to the absolute top of the mountain with it's glimmering sword held high to the heavens. I can't wait to see this movie on Saturday. I haven't been this genuinely excited for a movie in years.

I wasn't a Sonic fan at all before this, but these movies have made me into one. I went to go see the first one just to support the drastic efforts they put into changing it. I hope it's set a new precedent for the movie-making industry. Hollywood is constantly giving us things we didn't exactly ask for, just showing us trailers and acting like we'll just accept anything in a movie because we 'don't understand how they're made'. But we do know how movies are made, and we know what we want. This was the first sign of the audience actually having a voice in the producer's room and I hope it continues so the industry doesn't waste money on movies we won't watch.
So you saw the sequel? I didn't care much for the first one as I thought that basically "nothing happened" in it, but the second one was soooo so so much better!

@@kiricappuchin Yeah, there's so much legitimately fantastic art from the fandom, you just gotta know where to look and maybe more important, where NOT to look!
Also if you haven't, I strongly recommend playing sonic 1, 2, knuckles and 3 (sonic 2 and 3 can pair with knuckles to add him as a character to those games. It was the first and last time any company tried something like that. truly revolutionary).

I ended up rewatching both Sonic movies this week (been going through a fixation don't judge) and I think they got it perfect! The final design is really cute and makes his character so much more endearing rather than unecessarily creepy like their initial design.
And then seeing him next to Knuckles and Tails in the second film was just perfection, each was just right. It makes me excited to see what they do in the third film!

Agreed. I've felt this way since I saw the old design. Old design looks like a starved science experiment who you'd find dead on the side of the road. New Sonic actually looks like he's able to live and breathe comfortably in his own body

Well, I just saw Sonic 2 and without giving spoilers, I am happy to report that not only was it worth all the hype, it's bigger and better than the first. I felt like I was watching a full-on video game on the big screen. GO SEE IT ASAP!!!
X2 Eddy. Like, those same exact feelings you felt are the same ones I felt walking out of theater. I...seriously, can't fathom enough how much I loved the movie in its entirety; yes, I know the human subplot isn't stellar, but the greatness and good of what they brought in the table outweights the bad. Like, I hadn't felt that sense of overenjoyment in watching a movie in a long time, heck, not even the hype post-No Way Home can resemble what Sonic 2 made me feel; that's how much I loved Sonic 2

Yea way more entertaining than the first one. The only issue I had was that wedding scene interaction between Rachel and the undercover cop. It was dragged out and their romance wasn’t relevant to the movie.

This was an EXTREMELY well done video. I literally had chills throughout the whole thing because I was THERE, I saw the trailers, I saw the posters, I saw the redesign and I even participated in the community by providing my own ideal designs! To see someone sit down and actually go through the history is such a fresh take, and it really puts into perspective how things turned for the better. I grew up in the mediocre age of Sonic, and to see that this could change? I can't wait to see what happens in the future!

That’s the one thing from the first trailer for Sonic that I really do miss and I wish was in the final film. It’s just the kind of witty one-liner that’s in tune with Sonic’s personality, and I felt a touch of disappointment that that line was cut.
I don’t think it was “cut” per se. It was just a trailer line. He also says “basically it looks like I have to save your planet” which does not happen in the movie AT ALL. Trailers pull that shit all the time.

What surprises me is that a scene from the first trailer wasn’t used in the first movie, but instead carried over to the second one. Which’s where Sonic crouches, and then it’s a close up of his face before using his super speed to cross the ocean.

Ill never forget after the reception of that first trailer, people were feeling sorry for Jim Carrey. They said he had to carry the movie on his shoulders, and were making memes about his back going out. Im sure he wouldve still been the same as the animated actor he is, but that design wouldve been such a massive eyesore. Im so glad both the director and the studio redid the design. Now the correct portrayal of Sonic's appearance helped elevate just how great of a performance Jim Carrey's did as Dr Robotnik/Eggman.
The director's swift response to it was absolutely the right move, here. However, it was, itself, a bold and brave risk that could have just as easily backfired. There will *always* be criticism, and there will be those who, feeling they can make things happen if they're loud and in-your-face enough, will step up their criticism in the future to try to force this kind of response to anything they dislike.
I like to think that the reason the director made this unusual but ultimately heroically correct choice was because he did a very careful study of the criticism, looked at it as objectively as he could, and also looked around for counterpoints. It's clear, from how the final design came out, that he had his team and probably was himself looking at specific criticisms, because the final design was much closer to the iconic look.
I can't help but think there might've been some internal disagreement over the design even before it was released and panned; if internal criticisms were suddenly validated by unrelated fan criticism, that might explain it. But even that's something that usually would have to be ignored lest you allow internal disputes to leak into the broader world as people try to use public pressure to get their way.
So I totally get why this is usually never going to happen. It's fascinating that it happened here _and_ it was, in fact, the right choice.
I recall shortly after the release of the redesign trailer that one of the members of the graphical design team said that the redesign had been closer to what they, the design team had wanted to do in the first place but had to shelve due to pressure from higher up. This statement coming out after Jim Carrey had criticized the decision on a redesign on the belief that fan criticism was stifling the artists. After the design team member’s comment came out revealing that the execs were the ones that had forced the artists to make the original design, Jim Carrey went largely quiet until the immense success on release and he began openly praising the redesign and the execs listening to the fans.
Well said. He tried to analyze why and how the people reacted to said design, and once he realized the mistakes on his own judgment, he made the right choice to do changes. Great explanation
Sonic didn‘t need to look like he could actually exist in our world in the first place cause well…he‘s an alien from another planet with different physics and rules.
It makes sense that aliens apply to different anatomy and physics than any lifeform on earth.

One thing that always confuses me is people being upset that sonic is an alien. He has always been from a different world… i think. Because in the cartoon he is from the planet mobius. also people got really mad that he teleported through rings, thats straight out of the games, you use rings to teleport to special stages, in sonic 3 its straight up a giant ring that grows from being really small and teleports you to the special stage. And then in sonic 3D blast you use rings to teleport to the next stages
I had always been more partial to Mario and Pokémon titles but after I saw the second Sonic I grabbed my switch and downloaded Sonic 2. I had heard great things about it and that it had quite the reputation and let me say, Sega nailed this one and now I know why there’s a huge following for older Sonic games
Jeff Fowler is an absolute fucking legend. Any time he opens his mouth about Sonic does nothing but reinforce big of a fan he really is. Especially after seeing the second movie, I couldn’t have more faith in his abilities. Paramount would be stupid to get another director for the third movie. Even after, I hope he continues to have a huge involvement in the movie universe going forward.

The fact that they listened.. still gives me so much joy. Like my eyes literally glowed when they announced the re-work.
Just finished Sonic 2 in theaters and I have to say, as a sonic fan, it was incredible. I love how when they introduced Tails and Knuckles, it wasn't super over the top with the shock factor of "OMG THIS CHARACTER IS IN THE MOVIE!" and that was it (if you get what I mean). The characters were phenomenal and I am so happy that Knuckles and Tails were just like how they are in the games personality and power wise. And (SPOILERS AHEAD)
Super Sonic was INCREDIBLE. When Sonic became Super Sonic in the movie, I thought he was going to be super humorous and childish as he fought Robotnik but I'm REALLY happy that they made him more serious and badass with his representation. I was freaking out the entire time he was on screen and I loved every second of it. And the end credit scene with Shadow was so unexpected to me (I didn't know they were making a third one I thought this was gonna be the last one) and I am SO hyped for the next movie. The SMEU is gonna be great and I am so excited to see what more they do with it, because this is definitely one of my new favorite movie trilogies.

Seeing the Sonic 2 trailer, i am SO glad knuckles isn't being betrayed as an idiot, he's the guardian of the MASTER EMERALD he has no reason to be as dumb as the series started making him. I also hated how tails was nerfed to a helpless sidekick as well, Tails is scary yes but he isn't a coward. He can fight when he knows he needs to, and shouldn't need sonic 24/7.
And I can assure that, having seen the movie (without giving you any spoilers, PS, its worth it A LOT and I LOVED IT 😍) both characters DO get the respect and love they deserve. In the movie they had their flaws, but they had it for a reason of its development, and I can tell you that it is a joy seeing them together next to Sonic. Totally recommended 👌🏻
Being honest, I like this rendition of Knuckles. Instead of just being an idiot he's an honorable warrior thats just new to human culture. Which makes sense considering Knuckles story.

I don't know if the biggest surprise in this is that this whole ordeal happened _three years ago,_ or that it was only three days between the trailer and redesign announcement tweet. I remember it feeling so much longer, a week at least. Just goes to show how strong the public reaction was!
I remember 3 years ago seeing the design I though that, that was it this is their final moment and the sonic franchise is over, but to my surprise they actually listened to the fans and put effort to redesign it it’s rare to see this happen since most big companies don’t listen and just move on but seeing this happen with a new sonic movie released it’s just amazing to me

I know I’m late but I wanna thank everyone’s criticism over the first design. If it weren’t for you and the people at paramount and SEGA we would have never gotten THE Sonic movie we deserved. Now we have a sequel, tv spinoff, and third movie on the way!!!

Another bit of trivia, apparently the original trailer featured several designs of sonic, since they haven’t quite finalised the design yet.
Also, while the story boards were likely used with the original designs in mind, the only bits of finalised footage for the original sonic designs where the trailer itself and the baseball sequence, so unfortunately there is no “man-hog“ cut for the whole film.

this is exactly the video i was looking for!!! i wanted to see a general recap of all the mayhem because, while i am a sonic fan and have been since i was really little, i didnt have social media or even friends who also liked sonic at the time to give me updates on what happened. i happened to see the trailer and some memes, got freaked out, saw the redesign, and decided it was probably worth watching. that’s about it. i love the movies now and really wanted to see if anyone had a video on it. the only ones i could find were from the “top ten crazy things about the sonic movie you didn’t know”/watchmojo-like channels. not exactly what i wanted. i don’t know if i’ve ever seen any of your videos before so i was a little hesitant to click on this but i love your energy and jokes so i’ll definitely be watching in the future!
I’m here to say, the sonic movie 2 was every Christmas present a sonic fan wanted, action? Top notch, felt like I was watching a marvel movie, adventure? better than the first, and, well, the first was pretty good, so yeah, and the family friendly stuff and overall fan service?...amazing....pacing? Overall pretty fast, could be better, but yeah, sick overall...

i witnessed nearly all of this happen pretty much as soon the sonic movie reached the public consciousness, and i gotta say u made the retelling of it VERY entertaining. i watched this movie with a good friend of mine on opening night. we both LOVED it and found the little guy very endearing, and it was CRAZY to see the entire theater explode during the post-credits scene. can't imagine what that experience would've been like with the ORIGINAL design intact..... 😓

One thing that concerns me about the introduction of Tails is how they'll develop the relationship he has with Sonic. In the games, Sonic is a teen, with a mature streak in terms of the responsibilities he takes on and the way he takes care of himself (even if he's a sassy teen with a cocky streak as wide as his running trails are long). Tails is a young, excitable, somewhat shy kid who is a MASSIVE fanboy for Sonic that gets every fanboy's dream of becoming a close friend/sidekick/little brother figure to his hero. Now, at least as the adventure games went, he was also a strangely brilliant inventor (I think mainly to allow him to be the counterpart to Robotnik, since the heroes and villains needed this parallelism to do their levels right), but that let him be a kid genius and coupled with giving him a more focused determination to do things _right_ that contrasted with and complemented Sonic's cocky, devil-may-care, do it NOW nature. But Sonic was still the "adult" in their relationship, even if he was not fully mature, himself.
What I've seen in the trailer for Sonic (the movie) 2 is a Tails who is already a determined and experienced adventurer, with a mission/quest that brings him into contact with Sonic. Sonic, as presented in the first movie, as more of a kid than a teen - maybe 10 or 13 rather than 15 or 17. This puts him psychologically and behaviorally closer to Tails's age. Couple that with Tails's usual beyond-his-years efforts at maturity (even if he had a child's vulnerability underneath), and I fear Tails will come off as the Agent K to Sonic's Agent J, when that is almost - but not quite - the exact reverse of the dynamic they SHOULD have. Sonic should be the leader of the duo because he's the more experienced one, and Tails is the seriously determined sidekick who still lacks experience. Making Tails the more experienced one, unless it's been enough years that we're presented with a less childish and more teenaged Sonic, is going to be _weird._ Heck, it's probably going to be weird anyway, just having Tails be "the experienced one."
Nothing against that; without the existing character dynamics of Sonic and Tails to work with, I think having a kid who is "in the know" partnered with a competent but inexperienced adult who has to step up to adult for the kid even as the kid is the one who knows about the weird stuff they're both dealing with could be interesting. But I'm not sure it'll work for Sonic and Tails.
That said? I'm happy to give it a chance. Maybe the trailer is misleading, or their dynamic sets up quickly in a natural way despite what I think I saw.
I mean, I really, really did not expect Jim Carey to work as Robotnik at all. Yet he did a remarkably good job. (The dark and serious Sonic cartoon's Robotnik will always, I think, be my favorite, though: he was seriously sinister and believably threatening.)

Though boy does the movie very quickly gloss over a very important detail I hope the third movie will address to some degree - what Tails left behind to come to Earth. Because it's implied without going into any detail at all that there's nothing he'll miss or that will miss him, and the dark tragedy of that glossed over very, very quickly.

You made an error: While Sonic Unleashed and Generations weren’t loved by critics many Sonic fans including myself LOVE them. In fact many of us fans consider them the only good games Sega has made before Mania.
Excellent video! One important thing you forgot to mention was that, the design from the original first poster isn't exactly the same one from the first trailer. There was an interview with the Russian voice actor of Sonic where he mentioned that when the first poster dropped, Paramount was worried from the reactions and made some"tweaks". So, he might've ended looking worse than what we originally saw. That first poster had a strange green irirs bulging out of his skull with beefier legs that we got a better look on that other Golden Gate bridge poster. So, even back then he was being changed.
