I play the drums and have for decades so 15/15. However it’s a great way to describe the subdivisions and beat formats. Well done.
10/15 I felt it way more difficult than the deaf tone test, but equally fun. I don't know why, but it was very easy to get the 4 last
It basically confirmed what I already guessed about me.
I'm better at tone and melody than in pure rhythm
As someone who is not experienced with playing music or music theory, I was surprised I managed to get 15/15 on this. You did an amazing job explaining what to look for within the rhythm and I was able to use my memory of the examples given to succeed. Fantastic test and learning experience. Maybe I know a bit more about music than I thought I did.
I've been drumming for about 11 years now and got all of them correct, but this is a very cool and fun way to teach others. Nice video!
been drumming for 4 and got them all too! Nice job brother :)
Why is a portion of the screen blocked out so that you can't see it?
Yeah I stopped watching cos the blanked out part was too distracting and trying to read what it might be saying made it hard to concentrate on listening.
I got 8/15, but if it wasn't for the Push and Pull section, I would have gotten 4/11. That section just made sense to me whereas the others I clearly didn't understand well-enough
Thats funny, the push and pull part is the one that I'm still struggling to understand lol
Same the accents and the push and pull where the easiest to me, I struggled a lot with the other ones (I got 10/15)
I got 8/15, questions 5-12. Completely confused on subdivisions, and complex rhythms just pass me by.
Got 13/15 .. Funny tht answering the complex rhythm questions were easier for me than accents... May be that's because I'm trained in Indian classical music that it uses a lot of complex rhythms... But this quiz was really fun ... You are a great teacher
Thanks for your compliment Mona! (I had to resist using those old Ajit Khan dialogues cause you'd probably tired of them and might end up hating me lol).
Yeah I'm putting out more of these where I'm trying to show a more practical approach to music rather than a theoretical one. Got my 3rd one coming out by the end of the week hopefully :)
And I'll also cover some of our Indian classical music vocabulary like our complex rhythms and quarter or micro tones (what we call Srutis).
I also got thirteen but the complex patterns were the hardest and the rest was easy for me
Yes I'm the same
15/15, Been playing for 54 years, Bass and Percussion, not a perfect sight-reader but started reading back in the early days of all that. I would’ve worried if I hadn’t gotten all of these 100%, ha ha! Thanks for putting up some fun tests
I'm glad you dig them 😎👍
I got 11/15
I realized if you could listen to every beat slowly you would be able to get it. And as a dancer, I just used my instincts to feel which beats were pulled or pushed based on if I could make switch moves gracefully.
This was fun!
yayy 15/15
very cool video. the final part was fun :D
Kevin, I am new to your channel and I loved this! I am teaching starting musicians how to count and this video is a perfect overview of the possibilities. Thank you for what you do, for who you are! ☺️👉
Aww shucks Arabella:) Your last compliment might of been overkill....but i'll take it :D
hehe I'm glad you found it productive:)
I dont undertsand what i have to count for the subdivision test so i was so confused
@@RedditNarrated_ me too. That's why I scored 8/15.
This is a terrific introduction video. More please.
Transcribing songs directly from tapes, cds and old records was tedious 30 years ago in comparison to using wave files with looping and playback tempo controls. Transcribing ability is a huge advantage in learning music quickly and accurately. Sight reading speed becomes second nature.
Great job man! Keep it up! Your channel will definitely grow a lot soon! 👌👌
I failed
Are you born with rhythm?
Or can you learn rhythm?
I don't understand the numbers.
Oh man
And all I want is..
to dance so bad
I guess I still can
Where no one is watching me...
Just the air and notes that surrounds me
Dancing to the rhythm of my own flow
It's all good
💞
Everyone can learn to tap into their own rhythm:)
And from there, work on strengthening it so that other people can join in on their rhythm.
@@Kevin-George
I can't follow anyone
And they can't follow me
I am unpredictable
You are born with a rhythm = your heart beat.
@@gavinreid2741 True Gavin.
My heat beats with love.
But I need body rhythm to move in harmony with music. I love watching people dance that can do that. My main culprit is being so self conscious that I am not dancing to the music correctly.
You know..
Like a school of fish and I am like one of the odd ones going the opposite direction of the flow.😯
Shall I carry on and do it "any way"😊 or stiffen "my sway" 😳 I just want to get it on cue with perfect timing to the tune.🎶
It is possible you have beat deafness. This is real. Look it up,
15/15! I am in drumline though so... makes sense. 11 was harder than every other one for me though, almost missed it
Washed up drummer here. Probably wouldn’t have done so well without it.
I’m on drumline too and i ended up getting 15/15 as well. Maybe doing these tests for beginner musicians just makes me feel better about myself lmao
That was what I got wrong!
im also in drumline 15/15
Same!
I'm not a pro, but I nailed it all again. 15 out of 15. Though this one was just a bit harder than the last one. It seems that by taking your both tests in music and rythm I discovered my hidden talent. Thank you for the help. I'm looking forward for more of your tests. ❤️
15/15. This is closer to how I think about rhythm while playing in a band, then how most people teach it
We need more of this man
This can literally help our music skills because we're learning things in this type of video
14/15, your previous videos really improved my understanding of music and this video improved it even further beyond! Thank you so much.
Oops, I didn't do as well in this test, 11/15 and could have done with more time to listen to each clip especially the latter ones, it was hard in the nicest way! 😁 Thank for keeping me musically on my toes and I love your Santana influences at the end. Thank you & Keep Music Live! 😍 🎸🎶🧡
Same, but then again my musical expertise comes from taking guitar classes in highschool like a decade ago, but I’m still impressed that I scored this high.
11/15 is still above average
YESSSSS all right!! This was so much fun!
I played Guitar and Piano but never really got to a high level with rhythm, even took up drumming to practice rhythm. You can see that in my score 4/15. That's brutal.
Yay, I got 15/15! I've been playing the violin for five years. I have no problem with tapping, feeling or writing down rhythms. But as soon as I take the violin, I sometimes start to overthink when my pieces are getting more complicated! Maybe I just have to relax and practice more! 😊
Edit: Just wanted to add, thanks so much for these tests! I appreciated your pitch perception test as well. Both tests were fun! 🎉
8/15 not baddddd- also thank you so much for giving me a crash course on making music (I understand your explanation more than my music teacher haha)
Kevin,
Thank you so much for putting this into more practical terms! While I am in my fourth semester of music theory, I have struggled with both pitch and rhythm. I got an 11/15 for this test, and an 8/10 on the test about tone deafness. It is certainly a confidence boost scoring that high as I had been told all of my life I didn't have pitch/tone or rhythm!
You have got yourself a new subscriber. Keep up the excellent work! 🥰😊
Anytime Nichole 😊👍
We all struggle with trying to stay in shape. I had moments where I thought I had my rhythm down, and then suddenly discovered there were spots which required major work lol
I'm sure you'll have your share of moments and the best tip I can share from my own experiences is to talk and share different approaches and perspectives with other musician friends n teachers.
It took me quite a while to understand music as I do now.
After years of struggling I finally found out how easy music actually is lol.
All the best Nichole 😎👍
Kick some ass!
I am a newbie musician and your videos are really infomative and easy to understand. Looking forward to more :D
I'm glad you dig these Mentalmans_! 👊😎
Yup I'll be uploading another one in a few weeks along with some music.
Welcome to my Channel!
Very educacional! There were a lot of things I subconsciously understood (sort of) and somethings I’ve learned just now! Great video ;)
Excellent exercise Kevin👍. I scored 11 out of 15. It was very interesting as well as a little challenging to find out where I stand ♥️😍🥰
I got everything right except for the last two questions on the groove feel. That is definitely something I've never given too much attention to... and it matters a lot. Thx for the video!
14/15. That was indeed quite challenging, but i'm proud of my result! Thank you for these tests, i really like them!
As someone who has always felt I attached and picked up the beat well in any song, I’m very happy to get 14/15. I had to really listen though as technic of what beat was playing I did not know, your explanations were great in helping me identify each one!
Nicely done Psyciandra! I'm glad you enjoyed it:)
And man the name Psyciandra is so cool!!
Also got the 14/15. My only "wrong" answer was on Section 3, Question 4. I didn't felt it as laidback but still as being pressing. However, listening to bands like Tool can show you what is rhythmically possible.
Woah, i don't even have any knowledge of music and I scored 12/15! The test was amazing. Thanks a lot! It was fun!
Nicely done Aritra Mandal! Thanks for sharing and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Got 6 out of 15. Did much better on tone test. Perhaps that explains why I sing out of time with the music but get notes much closer to correct.
Thanks for the well designed test
Thanks Kevin. I found it very helpful. You've given me hope that I can learn music. I did not do to too bad in the first test. I can say confidently that I am not tone deaf. Your lessons have make me want to pick up my 25 year guitar and start learning to play. Best explanation I found. Thank you very much.😀
wow i definitely got better.. i did this before and i’m positive i got 8/15 but now i got 13/15 as i was confused between some but i’ve gotten so much better, i definitely like music more now and i understand it more as well much love ❤❤
For the first 7 questions, I only got 3...
I have never even try to fix this... I already know my problem since the first time, but your video really makes me want to fix this problem... This is just give me a picture about how bad it is... Thanks bro...
You sir are absolutely phenomenal! Much love from Brazil!
I love the accents part, defo my favourite bit. I used to play piano and always struggled with rhythms, especially during the graded exams. I'm now starting singing lessons as I love singing. With a lot of replays I managed a 12 and defo found the first part the hardest!
Well done Izzy! 😎👍
Yeah subdivisions are important. But it's pretty easy to work on by yourself.
Just practice counting the different examples on your own, like how we did in the video. You'll get super familiar and will be able to recognize and distinguish them in no time!
10/15. I missed 3,6,7,8,15. It was pretty hard for me, but an interesting learning experience. I guess it’s why I have trouble with polyrhythms in piano, like 3 against 4, 6 against 7, etc. where the left hand plays one rhythm and the right hand plays the other.
15/15! we play in mixed meter all the time in band, so I actually did really well on that last part
Awesome! I've always struggled with rhythm and is something my teachers and mentors wouldn't care to teach me, but this video makes a good overview of it. I scored 12/15, struggled a bit on subdivisions and accents, but actually got to understand how complex rhythms works!
Well done Chris! As far as odd rhythm goes, I learnt this technique of breaking down everything into 2's and 3's from drummers.
Which is funny, because no song can be played without a rhythm that puts every note into it's enclosed box.
I got 14/15, i really enjoyed this video activity! Thank you, the explanations are superb and simple to follow!!
I've always been someone who struggled with rhytms, such as dancing or playing instruments. Still got 11/15, I am overwhelmed pretty quickly but I'm good at feeling the "mood" :3
Nice job Crysales! Yeah learning and teaching rhythm is a bit tricky at the beginning. Dancing and rhythm is easy to feel and follow as a non-musician before we start learning. Then at our first lesson, we are forced to think about it which messes us up.
The goal for us is to keep working on it till eventually it all falls to muscle memory and instinct, and then we can finally get back to feeling it again, but with a heck lot more authority...which is required if we want to improvise flawlessly.
7/15 - no surprise there... I once participated in a dance and music workshop for African dance and rhythms. After a little while they took the instrument away from my hands looking me quite pitifully and told me to just dance 🤦♀️ The dancing likely wasn't any better but atleast I messed things up less dancing.
As long as it was FUN it's a win!
@@Artyshell53 It's a bit hard to not feel self conscious as I know I'm not a good dancer either 😅 But if I thought about that I'd never be able to dance. So yes, I just try to enjoy and be free when ever I dance. Besides people always look great when they're having a good time dancing, whether they're "good" or not - at least to my eye.
I'm not otherwise hopelessly untalented music wise - but it seems rhythm is a blind spot. Which is also weird because I love music with deep(?) and somewhat intricate rhythms. I hate music that's just thumo-thump-thump-thump-thump... and without any variation.
@@Pippis78 EXACTLY beautiful! 🤣🥰😇
Don't quit if you enjoy it. Being thrown into a group can be tough if not given enough time to slow down new rhythms. Practice slow...I mean slooooow. And build speed. Once you build those habits and mental pathways it'll get easier. I'm not much of a dancer but I brute forced myself into playing percussion and it's been very rewarding.
A bit tougher than the tone deafness test, i missed the first few getting used to actively thinking about the rhythm. After the first section I scored perfect from then on.
Was surprised to find I actually quickly recognized the irregular meters in level 4 and could make something up on the spot comfortably in the jam section (even if it was completely improvised and purely based on feel rather than any semblance of knowledge).
Interesting tests. I'm hoping to be able to pick up electric guitar in the near future, so these were really insightful for that.
That was fun, thanks!
Wow kev, really neat one. I got 14 and they weren’t as easy as I thought. I guess I took some basics for granted heheh
Loved it 👍
14/15
That's super informative
I would love to see more videos like this!
Really interactive and absorbing to watch 😍👀
Thanks nutsa cherry and I'm glad you enjoyed your experience.
I just uploaded another one few weeks ago and will put more tests like these soon.
Soon as I'm done with summer break :)
Wow... I can say I'm pretty happy with my 15/15. As a marcher, concert player, and jazz player, I think all the knowledge from those different forms of music and playing helped me with this.
Thank you for the tone deaf and rhythm test. I can finally point out my problem, 9/10 in tone deaf test, so yay! I'm not tone deaf. And 0/4 first question on rhythm test, I'm totally out of rhythm 😭😭😭😭😭
I did the deaf tone first, got 7, but the ones I missed (well 2 of 3 misses) were very hesitant. I was scared for the rythm one since I'm no professional at all, but I've been singing for fun here on yt for a couple of years. I've always feel like I had a good rythm, but this test comfirmed it. I got 13/15, and tbh, the 2 last sections far purely out of feel, because I barely understood a thing of the explaination.
Thank you for this!!
Wow really happy ! Got 15/15 and never did an instrument, just listened to tons of different music ! 😍 Thanks for the test !
I came here after the tone test. This was way more harder but I stilled scored 15/15! I don’t listen to music very often (though I play violin) and I wonder how this was possible.
I got 14/15, I'm pretty suprised by that. Because when I play cello and piano I always forget to count or do it wrong. And thank you for learning me new things 👍
15/15!!and some fun at the jam session!
I've never been able to consciously identify or count the beat, but keeping rhythm or falling into one can be done with a second. I can feel the timing, but there's no way for me to push my brain into the mix and get it that way. Any time I try, I start to doubt. I can still keep the rhythm, I just have no way of translating it to a count or upbeat or downbeat or whatever else.
Wow! Very smart n interesting. I really enjoyed it. Didn't have great confidence with complex rhythm but studied your instruction carefully n followed. Level 4 was demanding of me but having understood I scored well. Totally scored 13 out of 15.
Came here after acing the pitch exam, my musical training earned me 14/15. Didn't trust my gut on Q11, cost me the perfect score :P. Great video! Really explains a lot of the intuitions musicians have to pick up in the nuance of rhythm from the ground up.
Excellent scores Garrett! I'm glad you're diggin' these little 10 minute trivia runs:)
Thanks for sharing your feedback man
15/15. I wanted to learn how to play the drums so I thought maybe I‘d look out for some test. I always felt good with keeping rhythm so I guess I can start looking for a drum teacher!
I always thought I was good with rhythms, now I proved that I am. Such a great video, the content it's a bit difficult but you managed to do it on a dynamic way. 15 out of 15.
Excellent work Yolanda! I'm glad you're enjoying these :)
I got a 15/15 but I've been a drummer for about 10 years now. Cool test!
i subscribed right after the intro! great vibe! i play and i get a little better at life every day. come say hi! may yall be lifted!
Got 10/10 on the tone test, and an 11/15 here! Feels great considering all I do is listen to music rather than play anything, maybe one day though
Good stuff Jumin's chesire smile! You definitely have musical ears.
If you can put in the dedication and patience then you should totally start learning your favorite instrument:)
Perfect score for me. Super super fun
I got 14/15. Missed the 10th question, picking B instead of A.
Very useful video.
You have a knack for these!
Excellent job brother! And thanks for your kind words :)
@@Kevin-George 🙏
only missed the last one! this was super cool :D
15/15, definitely was a cool video that reaffirmed how i view the complex rhythms, I'm surprised nothing in here really touched on simple triple meters but overall still a really well constructed video :)
I reverse/echoed you on the jam and omitted a beat on the last two.
“A good drummer plays the beats, a great drummer also plays the silence between the beats”
AJ- been playing since 1975. Im starting to get the hang of it.
15/15 (but I play the drums so this was easy for me)
I'll check out the other tests
12/15 after a repeating some questions a few times hahaha the beats always stumped me, your explanations helped a lot!
Good job Mi shiru. This test gets slightly advanced towards the end.
This is a test/explainer tutorial. So I'm glad you found the explanations useful.
Thanks for sharing your feedback man:)
13/15 I'll take it
Quite enjoyed the jam at the end
12 of 15. Neat video and test. Thanks :)
I got a score of 11! Your teaching is wuite easy to understand, but I may need to rewatch this in order to understand sections 2 and 4 😅. This was an educational and really good video by the way!! Thank you for helping me further understand where I personally stand musically!
I'm glad you dig the video 😎👍
Very cool test :) I got 13/15
14/15 with one error due to me being sloppy. I am all but tone deaf but I love playing percussion. Some of your beats were highly contagious! I could barely restrain myself from playing along by drumming on the table.
As someone who always struggled with music, especially dancing, I found out this test quite hard sometimes, contrary to the pitch test, which was easier. Though I got 12/15, which is not too bad I think.
Thanks a lot))
5/5 on the subdividing
2/3 on the accents
4/4 on the grooves
1/3 on the complex rythms 🥲
12/15 isn't bad :)
Good stuff Captain Coconut!! :)
8/15. This was more challenging for me. You completely lost me at the end ahah
Good fun!
I'm glad you're enjoying em Giulia S. :)
This was awesome. 13/15.
I got 14/15 , the complex rhythms part was a little challenging - I need to practice this. I don't play drums so maybe that is why. Nice tutorial + test. Thanks KG!
Really got all of em right 🙏🏻❤
9/15, need to practice more then. hahah
odd signatures has always been a thorn in my side for years.
i absolutely flunked my music gcses but got all 15 of these questions right, i was going to give up hope of learning any musical instruments but this has kinda made me more motivated to do so :D
Nice work queen! This test is a bit advanced for a beginner. Getting all 15 right would of definitely taken some focus.
I hope it was a fun experience.
@@Kevin-George i had to listen 2 or 3 times on one of the questions, it was pretty difficult and definitely took a lot of focus. these quizzes are really fun though, thanks for making them :D
11/15 ngl more than i expected for a complete beginner in rhythm things HAHAHA i came back and forth to the parts where u showed examples cause i couldn't get them 😭 thank u for this vid, this definitely made me more interested in learning rhythms
haha killer job monkebrain! I'm glad you enjoyed it man:)
These series of vids are aimed at making learning music fun.
I Just uploaded another episode.
feel free to sub if you'd like to stay tuned
So I've learned I can not associate the words to the music. But I can hit the beat and catch it every time. I can feel it I just can't put to words. I've always loved to dance. But I can watch and catch the rhythm and dance on either beat. Just can't grasp what your asking. I've always had learning issues
I do this for a living..very nice video
A good exercise to learn to listen and count, my score was 13/15, one mistake was due to not listening concentrated, that was the beat with the accent on 4 and the kick on 2 and 3, I didn't notice the silent 1 at my first attempt.
The place that screwed me up the most was the complex stuff but over time I think I’ll learn it. Especially when I plan on learning drums. But this helped. I knew most of the stuff from other music theory but it was fun
yeah.... the tone was much easier for me, i could do the pulled(laidback) ones but not the other parts, i just couldn't keep up and my brain barely registers any of the first part, i could hear and time it but not count. Defo not built for drums, i should just stick to tambourines. This was a great and fun test, thanks and kudos to you.
I am a drummer, looked forward to taking your test. 15 out of 15. I enjoy trying to pull out time signatures out of songs with my son!
Well I'm not a drummer, I'm just normal people who loves music so much and I got 14/15. Very well explained sir!
15/15.. i had singing lessons only for 2 years and some keyboard lessons only lately (on & off) but hv been interested in music all my life.. (life=17yrs 😅.. im a highschooler now, btw)
the questions get tricky when u dont hv time to think.. like "u gotta answer this within i end this bar sir", ya know.. but i enjoyed it
8/15, man that was difficult, when it comes to music rhythm and beats is something I struggle with. But getting 8 points was more than I thought I would get. However thanks for the information in the beginning it was really informative :D
15/15 I am happy with that❤
I surprised myself a ton, 15/15. I’ve always had trouble keeping time and struggled on the push/pull but I pulled thru :)
I got 14/15, i got one wrong on the pull/push.
Honestly i expected this, I'm a huge sucker for rhythm games.
After missing questions 3 and 4, I went back and paid more attention. I didn't miss any more after that. Somehow. It did take an absolute ton of focus and effort, though --and listening to the questions multiple times.
Question 3 just sounds like a 3+2 rhythm to me. I didn't know what to do with that. I can't parse a 4-beat rhythm from it for some reason.
Question 4, though-- That was just a silly mistake on my part. I hear it now; I just hadn't been paying close enough attention at first.
Thanks for saying this. I feel better ! I'm a killer on typical timing and beats but the last part threw me . Im half asleep and taking pain med for my injury so I will try again later. It will definitely take some concentration.
I missed 3 and 4 as well.
trading 2s with the computer was honestly so fun
