Tom Fisher is a breeder and fancier of the Irish Wolfhound. Tom, a professional dog trainer gives great insight into the history, mindset, and personality of the world's tallest breed.
Considered by the American Kennel Club to be the tallest of all dog breeds, describing the breed as, "Of great size and commanding appearance, the Irish Wolfhound is remarkable in combining power and swiftness with keen sight. The largest and tallest of the galloping hounds, in general type he is a rough-coated, Greyhound-like breed; very muscular, strong though gracefully built; movements easy and active; head and neck carried high, the tail carried with an upward sweep with a slight curve towards the extremity".[13] The average height of an Irish Wolfhound should be taller than that of a Great Dane. However, the wolfhound is not to be confused with being the heaviest, as its structure should be similar to that of a Greyhound, with a very broad and deep chest that tucks up.
Its colour may be grey, brindle, red, black, white, fawn, and wheaten.
Irish Wolfhounds have a varied range of personalities and are most often noted for their personal quirks and individualism.

My mom has a 9 month old Irish wolfhound puppy! He is 130 pounds! But he is the most gentle, calm, sweet dog I’ve ever met! They are also absolutely stunning and not very common people are always so fascinated when they meet him!! Also in love with the fact that he mentions how much money you put into testing, papers, vet bills breeding! It’s something I’m very passionate about but love doing!

There's a story here in Ireland, perhaps just a myth, but interesting none the less, that it was the original Wolfhounds who were reputedly even bigger, in fact likely the biggest dogs that roamed the planet at any point in history and were a lot more ferocious than the docile and loving bastardized modern wolfhounds, that sent the Roman legions into retreat out of Ireland. Whether it's true or not, I don't know, but the Romans never did conquer Ireland, like they did much of the rest of Europe, so maybe there is something to it. The story goes that upon conquering large parts of Britain, the Caesar sent word that his legions were to make their first trip across what's now known as the Irish sea to explore and conquer the unmapped land to the west that his cartographers named Hibernia.
They obeyed his orders, but upon landing that very first legion with full Calvary was met at the shoreline by a large marauding tribe of Celts, who were flanked by masses of the huge dogs that bounded toward them and were so big they took Calvary men off of horses with ease and ripped them to shreds in a matter of seconds. Upon seeing this at the rear the high command of the legion were so terrified that they ordered retreat, immediately sailed back to Britain and sent word to the Caesar that Hibernia was simply an unconquerable land, because it was full of ferocious savages, who had command of unstoppable dogs the size of horses that killed men at the beck and call of their savage masters. Later when Roman traders returned to Ireland they brought several dogs back to Rome which became the talk of Rome's citizens and left them in awe and wonder. I believe this story (perhaps myth) was recorded somewhere and actually originated within Roman texts written during the conquest of Britain, although I could be wrong about that.

I had an Irish wolfdog by pure chance from a tiny puppy in Costa Rica. I had no idea what I had. She was amazing. I later learned her breed etc as got her as a rescue. She was one of the best dogs in the world. Or ever. All dogs are the best. Angels and loving they all are. But she made my world amazing! I can see my dog who I names Nasha de Los Angeles de Dios e Jesus Cristo, Yes that was her name and Nasha for short. She would bring food home. Rabbits mainly and intake. Literally bringing home food as not savaged. I taught her to just suffocate so its whole and clean and bring home.

Actually 100% true....There are Roman records describing the huge Hibernian (Irish) dogs being paraded beside Roman horse drawn carriages (when specimens were brought back to Italy) where they are recorded as being almost as big as the horses themselves (actual horses, not ponies)....The Wolfhounds in those days (5,000 BC) were the original massive dogs.....No one knows for certain just how big & heavy the original breed of Wolfhound were, but we do know from Celtic writings that they were bred to hunt grey wolves which existed throughout Ireland in that period.... There is a huge difference between the breed that is around today which was resurrected from near extinction & the original Irish Woldfhound.... The breed around today was resurrected primarily using Scottish Deerhounds & German Great Danes, later mixed with Borzoi and other breeds...In fact its even debatable if the original breed survived at all considering their size was so huge compared to what we have today......Nice video Tom, and well explained......As the owner of a large breed dog (Leonberger) I cannot emphasize enough how much it costs financially if you have health issues with a large breed dog.

There are writings by ancient Greek diarists 4000 years old or so which say: " traders came from Ireland today trading in fine gold jewellery and ornaments (the Irish were the leading goldsmiths of Europe in ancient times) and great hounds that hunt the wolf." So it gives an indication of how old the breed is. The commentator is right in saying that the original breed was much larger in size, as its primary use was as a battle dog, and was bred to be very fierce.

@@leviathanbathory6903 any good quality and sound puppy will cost you alot of money. You get what you pay for. A cheap dog will cost you alot of money in vet bills if you buy without proof of good health in the parents and grandparents. A bad breeder is not a good source of information. A good breeder will stand behind their gaurentee. They can prove weather the dog is sound and they have to back it up. A good breeder will want the best for their breed so they will also make sure you will take care of them. And some will even take the dog back if something happens that you can't keep the dog

So does that mean they have aggression issues? Because that was what I got out of this video with the "when they get into a fight" and "socialization is very important" and "only for experienced owners who are not complacent" comments.
I was always under the impression that sight-hounds are the least aggressive breeds. Obviously all dogs can be aggressive, but the way he worded it made it sound like it's particularly common in this breed.

    • @hotdawg0503
      @hotdawg0503 Před 6 lety

This guy is not representing the breed well. I have 2 Irish wolfhounds with zero aggression towards other dogs or people. By the sounds of his aggression issues that is due to poor breeding. If a dog has known aggression you don't breed that animal and carry on that trait. If he is breeding 3 different breeds of dogs I believe he isn't too picky about what temperament or hereditary heath issues are passed on. Selective breeding is the key with reputable breeders. If you have a good breeder there shouldn't but any health issues, but the number one killer is bone cancer.

I have to say, living somewhere without a yard, is easy. but you have to have space in your house for his giant body to be able to sprawl out and be comfortable. Without a doubt, the only dog I will ever have is an Irish wolfhound. they have the best temperament and are extremely loyal.

This might tussle some IW owners, but I lived with my IW in the wilds of Alaska and I got to see his breeding instincts come out in full force. I had my Heart Hound out on the bluffs where he could RUN like on the isles of Ireland - but out on the Aleutians of Alaska. My friend clocked him running 35 MPH once chasing him in his van down a dirt road - keeping nose to nose with him. I also saw him (male IW, 165 LBS and 27" at withers) quickly dispatch 5 dogs all by himself. I had him for a walk off leash on the bluffs when a rogue pack of village dogs unexpectedly showed up and tried to kill his little WP Corgi buddy (little man syndrome - got in the middle of them) and my IW had to save him. His SKILL and instinct to single handedly dispatch ALL those dogs was an EPIC scene out of the history books. He didn't kill them but THREW each one like rag dolls - went for the betas first and took the alpha down last like a true warrior. They all ran away with tails between their legs. He also got in a tussle with a Saint Bernard that got out of his fence and attacked. He quickly dominated him as well - no kill or injury - just massive dominance. I was SHOCKED at each incidence as my IW was a total couch potato love muffin. I also witnessed him eyeball a wild FOX and there was NO holding him (although he was quite nicely trained IMHO - could give him a steak and he wouldn't touch it until I said GO) but seeing that FOX it was useless to try to hold him - that would only result in injury. None of the situations were intentional but when they happened, just a result of rural living, but I must say he was GLORIOUS. I share because most will never see their IW express themselves this way.

Other than one compost-thief that bloated at age 4, mine have (fingers crossed) all made 8 -10.5 years, and two of them had severe problems with rear toe-dragging: one due to a type of embolism/stroke s a pup and the other likely secondary to being allowed to jump out of a SUV at too young an age. The funniest things is his love to small green apples. He would do anything to get his favorite snack XD But the switch is VERY REAL. When he was a puppy he was bitten by pitbull. Now he is friendly with any breed and especially careful when playing with small breeds such as yorkshire terriers, chihuahua, dachshunds. Our wolfhound adores to play with kittens! But things change when he sees a pitbull. Only because he was under training since he was a puppy he obeys our order. But im afraid to think what would happen to a pitbull if somehow our mighty giant will get free.

I had the cousins, Scottish Deerhound, I rescued her from a abususive owner,he bred her to be a hunting dog and when she didn't perform to the owners expectation they let other dogs bully her, the owner kepted her outside because he was disappointed with her and when I first saw her I knew she needed love so I got her but it took about several weeks until they could trust me and from there she was a sweet loving dog, She had made friends with our other dog and they became inseparable and she lived with me from age 2 until her passing( 13) years old, I miss her everyday❤❤❤

Really interesting to hear more about their history. I didn't know they dated back so far or about them being known as a war dog. Always love hearing these new bits of information in your videos Zeke. Hopefully we'll see a video of the Scottish Deerhound or Greyhounds in the future.

I had my Bare for 11yrs. I got her at 6 weeks old. She was a GSD/Irish Wolfhound mix. She was almost completely trained by 8 weeks old. She became my service dog over time. Alerting me to my low blood sugars as well as standing in front of me so that I could brace myself getting up from falls. She was highly attuned to my emotions and was whatever I need when I need. I have pictures and videos of her from the day I got her, through her life, right up to an hour before her death. I just put her down Sept. 30 2019. I'm in overwhelming grief.

I have an Irish Wolfhound, who is 12, which is rare because they don't often live past 6-8 years. He is Giant, Dopey and extremely loving. He just wants constant rubs and loves and affection. He is the most gentle and kind soul I have ever known. Never been vicious or aggressive in his whole life. He has also never had any serious health problems, which is another lucky thing for us. If you are ok with them being massive, and plonking their giant bodies down on anything they like (usually their favourite human) then I would absolutely recommend them as a family pet. Especiallly with their loving and gentle nature. If you are willing to put the effort in to maintain them, I think they are almost a perfect Dog to have as a Pet or companion. Compared to almost every other breed I can think of.

We have had 33 Wolfhounds over the years .....they are truly the most gentle, loving creatures with superb temperament but they are terribly clumsy and very prone to many ailments .......I have lived with many dogs and there is nothing like a Wolfie .Don't be mistaken tho' .....the hunting instinct is still there although many males are quite lazy about it but the bitches are more keen.I was walking a young female along a hedgerow when 2 deer sprung from the hedge ...........she caught and killed one within 20 paces ,left it and set off again taking the other one before it reached the end of the field. She was the only one I have had with an instinct that strong and it was quite heartbreaking to see but nothing in the world would have recalled her .....they were originally intended for exactly this purpose and they are very sight/flight orientated -like greyhounds, Borzoi whippets and all other sighthounds.....if it moves they will chase it.
The old measure for the standard was " dog swift and lean enough to chase and catch a wolf ;big and strong enough to despatch it" I have no doubt a well bred dog of the standard would have no difficulty doing this very easily.

jan braham I’ve always wanted a wolfhound too! I volunteered with a Wolfhound rescue group, in hopes that I could adopt one, but the fence around our yard was too low! I did get to work with the hounds in that group and help the president of the group care for her three dogs when she had to be gone. She was a little, short, thin old lady who’s husband had passed away a few years before, but she could handle her dogs just fine. Now years later we have a Dane! We rescued her at 10 months and at 8 years old she is still full of energy and can be a handful! She loves people, but when a little dog challenges her, she wants to put her paw on the dog to suppress it. We have control her not to do that! At 120 lbs, that could hurt or kill a small dog!

@Savoki ii my grandpa had a wolfhound til he passed away many years ago (the dog not my paps) and he was the goofiest and most lovable dog. i have always loved large dogs since then. the biggest reasons i dont own any xl dogs are that they require so much food and die too soon. i also agree with jennifer perkins, i wont buy any dogs from breeders because there are perfectly good sweet dogs out there in shelters looking for a good home. :)

If you are interested in one, IW Rescue organizations are always seeking good homes. Find your local group and start meeting dogs. Of course they want everything but your firstborn son to ensure a good home. Same as a good breeder: You'll need vet references, personal references, a site visit by a rescue and have to promise to return the hound to rescue should you be unable to keep it for any reason. Still, great way to enjoy the breed, they place all ages, obviously older dogs are easier to find. If you love them, come join the chaos! Check You Tube, some good groups on there.
