Elmer Keith developed the .44 Magnum cartridge after years of custom loading and writing many articles about the .44 Special. Wanting to develop a cartridge based on the Special that would be suitable for handgun hunting, he created high-pressure loads that pushed a heavy bullet. Manufacturers were quick to recognize the potential of these cartridges, and the .44 Magnum was born through a collaboration between Remington, which made the ammunition, and Smith & Wesson, which made the revolver. However, it was not actually Smith & Wesson that introduced this cartridge to the market. The iconic single action Blackhawk revolver was released by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in early 1956.
Originally, the caliber was introduced as a handgun hunting cartridge. It is still great for this purpose, but over time it has become much more. Many types of firearms have been manufactured to accommodate it, including rifles with bolt action, lever action, and semi-auto. These rifles have been used for medium-sized game, such as whitetail deer and feral hogs, with great success.
There are hundreds of guns that have been chambered for this caliber, but one stands alone - the Smith & Wesson Model 29. The character “Dirty Harry” Callahan, played by Clint Eastwood in the Dirty Harry film series, carried this revolver and introduced movie viewers to the “most powerful handgun in the world.” The popularity of this cartridge skyrocketed as a result.
For the last 50 years, ammunition manufacturers have continued to produce enough innovative cartridges to keep up with the steady demand. Federal Premium offers it in their Hydra-Shok line, as well as Vital-Shok and Power-Shok, and traditional hollow point and soft point bullets. Hornady produces their Critical Defense line as well. These are only a few examples of the many choices buyers have. The .44 Magnum remains a powerful and versatile cartridge, useful for hunting and self protection, not to mention just shooting with friends.

A correction- The gun and ammo manufacturers did not quickly adopt the magnum cartridge/ pistol concept. Consider that it took many years prior to 1935 for S&W to bring to market the .357 Registered Magnum revolver alongside the round. Colt built relatively few guns for this cartridge prior to WW2. It took 20 years of labor and lobbying of Elmer Keith and a few other wildcatters before Remington standardized the .44 Magnum round for the market to go along with S&W and Ruger placing guns on the market in 1956. So yes, good things come to those that wait but are persistent to get it right.

He developed the 44mag after he had been developing loads for the 45 long colt. He realized if he went with a 44 special, his cylinder walls were slightly thicker and he could push it further.

From everything I have seen or read, Smith & Wesson produced a 44 Magnum before Ruger. Which would make sense as Elmer Keith was encouraging Smith & Wesson and Remington to produce products based on his newly developed cartridge. It appears that Elmer Keith had worked with Smith & Wesson in the past on the 357 Magnum. So don't you think maybe Ruger's attempt at trying to steal the show might be incorrect? This is very verifiable, check it out.

They still steal the show with how robust they are

We all know there is 454 Casull 460 and 500 etc.. but as a side arm or chest rig a 44 does the job and will continue to so and with a 4570 lever there is no match
