Here at Ammo.com, we always encourage our listeners to carry a personal protection firearm (CCW) whenever possible and legal to do so. However, in our every changing world, the potential for a disaster or SHTF scenario seem to be growing exponentially by the day.
From EMP strikes, to nuclear war, societal breakdown, an economic collapse, or even just a natural disaster, the potential for a life-threatening situation seems to be constantly around us.
On this episode of the Ammunition Guides Podcast, we have a special guest join us: Chris Heaven, the CEO of Survival Dispatch. In this podcast, we cover the pros and cons of concealed carry vs open carry during any SHTF scenario and real-life examples of what Chris has experienced in his own life.

But to be fair A old Ford Bronco at 15 mph did just as good. And so did the Railroad my Grandfather worked for especially around the rut.

FT/LBS have nothing to do with stopping ability. Does nobody realize that? All handgun calibers depend totally on shot placement. And with shot placement correct, they all do the same thing.

Is the 9mm obsolete? With the new ammo, a 380 will do almost anything a 9mm will do with much less recoil. A 40 S&W gives you close to the power of a 10mm out of a 9mm size gun. Other than cheaper ammo, why do we need a 9mm?

Hardly any history. The 22 WMR was marketed in '59 and was first chambered in the Marlin "Levermatic" guns- Winchester themselves did not make a gun for it until a year later. It was based on a slightly longer version of the old 22WRF case which had gone out of production. Some 22WRF guns will chamber the 22WMR but the pressures of the newer cartridge are much higher and that is courting disaster. The 22LR will usually fire in a gun chambered for the 22WMR, but cases usually split and accuracy is bad; again don't try it. Much debate about the WMR in pistols for self-defense. Bearing in mind that the Marshall/ Sanow studies rated the 44Mag below several other less powerful cartridges, I'm not sure it's reliable for assessing the 22WMR either. Both these examples have low case counts, which apparently skews the results. Gel tests favor velocity, so those may not be good RL indicators either. Personally I don't believe in any cartridge having 'magical' qualities of stopping power which exceeds what it's ballistics cause me to expect, and I think shot placement is a far more significant factor than anything else. It's your butt so you decide for yourself; may you not get it wrong or ever need to discover whether you did or not personally.

Anyone into ammo needs to get a copy of "Cartridges of the World" by Frank Barnes. There are 'wildcats' with a purpose like the 230 Ackley, meant to be the small-bore cartridge for places where 22 caliber wasn't allowed for large game hunting, and some 'wildcat' cartridges like the 22-250 eventually went into commercial production. Lots of weird early semi-auto handgun cartridges and newer oddballs too like the 256 Win for the Ruger Hawkeye pistol and the Marlin 62 'Levermatic' rifles which never quite caught on. The 9mm shotshell was meant for in-city garden pest control and does that job well; it's still sold but good luck finding 24ga shotshells which did see use in Europe.

It's the same argument over and over. In the early 2000s when 6.8 SPC was developed, US SOCOM was looking for something with more power and terminal effectiveness than 5.56 in the ranges that 5.56 operates. That's exactly what 6.8 SPC delivers. In a similar sized rifle to the M4, 6.8 SPC delivers improvements over the 5.56 NATO (yes I know 77gr OTMs are better too but that's not what the Army uses/used) in every single metric except weight. 6.8 SPC adds a couple pounds of weight to a full combat load. The difference is even more pronounced from short barrels. 6.8 SPC even suppresses better. 6.5 Grendel and it's offspring 6mm ARC, are also more effective than 5.56 NATO under 500m but they deliver more long range performance, especially with longer barrels. The 6.8SPC also delivers better long range performance than 5.56 NATO from a long barrel, just not quite as good as 6.5 Grendel or 6mm ARC. But 6.8SPC wasn't designed to shoot that far, it was designed to be better than 5.56 NATO from an M4 within the 500m effective range of 5.56 NATO.

Most fun I've ever had at a bass pro was one year right before rifle season for whitetail. That time when all the hunters of NE Pennsylvania dust off their deer rifles for that 2 weeks of magic. Anyway my friend and I were at cabelas/ bass pro and I was looking for some 7.62x39 that were suitable for hunting when I hear my buddy ask a guy with many boxes of 300 win mag, what he was going to shoot. The confused man replied with "whitetail, what do you think" To which my buddy replies with "right right because the deer are notoriously hard to kill"😅 I almost chocked when he said that, and then I saw the guys enraged face and his contemplating smacking my friend and teaching him some manners, only problem was old boy was 5ft 10 at most and sporting a bit of a gut while my amigo was about 6ft6in in flip flops and had arms bigger around than dudes chest. The combo of Samoan and Scandinavian = big motherfuckers. But anyway chuckles Mcgee just laughs and gives a "real funny" while walking away. What's the point here? Well hunting with high powered rifles in NEPA specifically is pointless. Most shots are taken in wooded areas and under 100 yards. So the guys who live here and have these anti aircraft battery's for deer rifles, I always think back to that little engagement because though snarky and a little rude/ condescending he was A. Absolutely correct & B. Funny as shit I know lever guns are all the rage right now and that's a trend that can't die soon enough but my Bambi killing implement of choice is a marlin 336 35 caliber lever action. Because even if there's a ton of shit like branches, briar etc that heavy ass bullet just doesn't care. And any time someone says "oh yeah my ultra super duper magnum just this side of a howitzer can take shots out to 2000 miles, I always smile because I know this guy shoots that thing a max of 5 times a year an at 80 yards max

My M1 will penetrate two 3/16 steel plates spaced an inch apart @ 25 yards, and still hit the burm 100 yards out. The carbine was made to be effective out to 300 yds. It's not an 800+ yard battle rifle, nor was it meant to be. It' more a PDW, for close in engagements.

Now for what i usually keep in my shotgun... My preferred load is the 8 pellet Federal Flight Control. I can put all 8 pelles on target at 45 yards. I like Hornadys Critical Defense 00 buckshot too. I keeo a few slugs on board the shotgun in case I need to reach out a little. I prefer the Fiocchi Aero dynamics reduced recoil aero slugs or the Federal Tactical Hydro Shok slugs which are hollownpoint slugs so penetration isnt S bad but it will still go through every wall of the house

You lost me with .308 "Performance wise kinda indistinguishable from the 30-06". Really? The only way you get close to this being true (close, but no cigar) is by comparing factory .308 and 30-06 in the 150gr and 165gr range. You certainly are not comparing 180gr and above which are the more likely bullet weights for Moose hunting. And you aren't taking handloading into account which is where you really see the 30-06 leave the .308 WAY behind. Not unlike factory 10mm ammo which was neutered when the .40 S&W came out, modern factory 30-06 is quite neutered which is the only reason why .308 is even close.

Barrel length! 6.8 spc is a more compact rifle , and kills deer and hog famously in Texas

  • @americansfortruthandjustic7504

Regarding availability, 5.56/223 is currently plentiful. Once military contracts dry up, it will become hard to keep up with demand. If 6.8 SPC contracts spin up capacity, it will become more available to the public as well. As the host stated, 6.8 SPC AR uppers will fit on AR lowers currently handling 5.56/223 uppers, but you will need 6.8 SPC magazines to take full advantage. Best to use 5.56 for now, and monitor the adoption of 6.8 SPC in the military to determine when to buy a 6.8 SPC upper and magazines.
