The irony is the gun isn't much used by police because of it's monstrous recoil. Milius stated he picked the .44 Magnum because it was a hunting round and he wanted to show Harry was a hunter.

I have had a few 29 Smiths all very good guns accuracy always very acceptable, my last one was a beautiful 8 3/8" and I have had three 6" and one 4" in the end the 6" was my favorite because I carried in a hip holster a lot. Great guns and one of the best medium calibers out there!

In 1974 I picked up a blued 6 1/2 inch S&W model 29 and in 1979 I picked up a model 629 with a 6 inch barrel. Both are great shooters. I reload and used to cast bullets for them. The preferred cast bullet is Lymans # 429421 cast bullet out of hard lead. The powder has been either Alliant 2400 or Unique. H110 is another powder. All loads give significant recoil

I owned two Smith & Wesson Model 29's in my life, a 6 inch barrel and a 4-inch barreled Model 29-2. What I learned was that over time they will shoot themselves loose, which is why the Model 29-3 had what's known as the "endurance package) added to it in the 1980's. I got far more use and what was a better shooting gun what my Smith & Wesson Model 57 in .41 Magnum, which looks identical to the Model 29. Mine was a 4 inch barrel and it had belonged to a Vermont constable who used it his entire career until he retired. It was a better shooting and more comfortable gun with less recoil but in .41 still packed enough of a punch. My favorite .44 Magnum was a Ruger Blackhawk flat top 50th anniversary gun. It shot better and held up a lot better than either of the two Smith & Wesson revolvers I had.

If he didn't totally waste the strength of one finger by trying to hold onto the trigger guard, a round one at that, and use all his fingers on the actual handle he might control the recoil better.

The 44 magnum is fun to shoot once but overall exhausting to shoot long term. If you want something powerful but easier, I'd recommend the 45 ACP desert eagle. Strange how much of a difference such a small change in size makes. Obviously a 9mm is king for accuracy and speed but the desert eagle is a great balance between the fun of shooting a gun with a lot of kick and still being accurate and repeatable.

I bought one in Germany.in 1973...I saw Dirty Harry at the post theater at Grafenwohr in July of 1972...but none were available and none were expected to become available for the foreseeable future...I forgot about it until December of '73cwhen I got a call from the manager of the Illesheim Rod and Gun club telling me that one was available from the S&W bonded warehouse in Ulm which was being closed..my price was $205.50!!!! I could believe my luck, but didn't have the cash available at the time...rules were that you had to pick up the handgun and bring it to the company arms room the day it arrived...the R&G club had no safe or security to hold firearms...I called my dad in New Jersey and asked him for a loan...I'd already spent as much on a plane ticket home for Christmas of that year...in mid January of 74 I got another call to pick up the gun...I think I ran the half mile to the R&G club in about 10 seconds!!! Unfortunately it was stolen in Feb of '82...I have both the receipt and Post MP registration card....
