Its super nice with 44spl! And if a bear is charging me im not going to be too worried about what the gun will do to my hand. Lol ive fired a full box of 50 rounds of 240 44mag rounds and my hand was pretty sore afterward but it is doable. Its the greatest backpacking/hiking gun ever!
My brother has a .44 mag derringer. Weighs about as much as an lcp.

I got a flinch just watching you shoot that cannon man.
For those of you starting out with revolvers, any rubber grip that covers the steel back strap is a giant improvement.
Getting whacked in the web of your hand by those frame back straps while using anything bigger than 357 Mag will hurt enough to create a flinch.

I put Hogue tamer grips on the 329PD I had and it was still a beast to shoot with full power 44 magnum ammo. I am happy to say that particular gun no longer resides in my collection. My brother in law want a light weight trail gun for bear and other types of threat protection. I sold my 329PD to him. He's happy and so am I. I replaced the 329PD with a 629 Deluxe 3" that is still a handful with full power 44 magnum ammo but much more pleasant to shoot than the 329PD.
I would never call anyone a whimp after shooting that gun. I would tell anyone that say your a whimp they need to shoot that gun to have the experience. The 329PD is not a gun that I would just hand to anyone to shoot.
I have a stainless 629 custom shop 2.625" bbl .44 mag that with the rosewood grips and full house loads will hurt you. The soft grips made a huge difference.
@@fyisense9312 I have a 629 Classic 5", 69 Combat Magnum 4.25", and 69 Combat Magnum 2.75" besides the 629 Deluxe 3". I have Hogue tamer grips for all of them. I also have VZ G10 grips for the 69 Combat Magnum 2.75 that I use for carrying but I carry 44 Spl ammo not 44 magnum.
I almost bought a 329 PD some years ago. My friend carried it while hunting in Alaska. He only fired it one time and then offered it to me. Seems it just about ruined his hand. I wish now that I would have purchased it as he offered it for a great price. I'm looking for one now for a EDC piece. Nice review. I just had to sub to your channel after watching you shoot the beast.

Once was asked to shoot a S&W Mountain Revolver, which was an alloy frame 44 Mag. Owner could not hit anything with it and thought the sights might be out. I took 50 meter pigs with it, passed it back and told him it was perfect. Did not want him to see the tears in my eyes or guess the fire in my arms all the way into my shoulders. Truly, a travesty of a revolver.
Thanks for sacrificing yourself to make the video! I really was impressed by you mentioning that a good crimp is needed on the bullets! With factory Magtech ammo in my 329 PD it was pulling out the bullets from the case.. I now crimp factory ammo as well as my reloads on my 329PD.

I have had the same issue with my Charter Arms Bull Dog Pug "new production." The revolver is so light that the bullets creep out of the cases if they are not tightly crimped. And then jam the action of the gun. But they can be pressed back into the cylinder. In an emergency to facilitate function.

I just wish cowboy or even Special ammo was more cheaply available. Unfortunately you have to roll your own to keep the prices down.

Hey, what a cool coincidence, I was at the range today shooting my 329PD.
Yeah it's very painful to fire with full power 44 magnum loads.
It definitely is a save your life gun.
My 329PD, her name is Annie because she is atomic.
The grips are very beautiful but they are very hard to shoot.
I've replaced the grips with the pacmeyer decelerators and it is more comfortable to shoot.
I do conceal carry Annie and load it up with Buffalo bore hardcast wadcutter 44 specials.
Another load that I like is the Buffalo bore anti personnel 44 special heavy hollow points.
Recoil reminded me of my Charter Arms Bulldog .44 Special I had in the early '70s. Not a magnum, but the gun was like the weight of a .38 Special snub nose. It hurt. Traded it favor of a Ruger Security Six.
You may want to try a Pachmayr Decelerator grips on that gun. Even with the stock rubber grips it can hurt quite a bit but the Decelerator really made a difference. Pricey but worth it.

I've had a 329PD now for about 13 years and use it mostly as a hiking/hunting revolver. I use 44 spcls in it except for hunting. I have taken 3 deer with it over the years all at 50 yds or less. Not a pleasant revolver to shoot at all with 44 mag, but surprisingly accurate. I've not injured my hand(s) firing this beast, but sure has felt close to it with 240 gr full power 44 mag. I've always kept the wood grips on the gun. Equally as painful is the S&W 340PD 357 mag revolver which I also carry when feather weight full power is required. There is really no reason to carry these scandium/titanium revolvers other than they are so light, you just forget carrying them. As an outdoorsman's revolver, there is nothing better. As a range gun, better off having someone beat your hands with a baseball bat. The end result will be the same. Also forgot to mention the action internals are slightly different than other S&W revolvers. There are some additional parts which lock the cylinder release in place so the cylinder does not unlock with heavy loads. The PD series of revolver are truly outstanding examples of revolver engineering.
I first saw a 329PD on a table at a gun show. I grabbed it and lifted it from the table, and my hand shot up into the air with it! I was not expecting a large, .44 mag revolver to be that light. I had to have one.
Now I do have one, and it's my trail gun for defense against bears and mountain lions. (In fact, I carried it today on a five and a half mile hike.) When I shoot it, I'm good for twelve, maybe eighteen rounds before I've had enough. It's VERY unpleasant to shoot. But I figure I'm not going to get into a gunfight with a bear or puma, so I'm willing to deal with the punishment for the level of defensive power it gives me for so little carry weight.
Mine came with both the wood and rubberized plastic grips, as seen in the video. The former are very pretty, but aren't suitable for actual shooting (as Buffalo promptly discovered). The latter promptly broke under the stress of the recoil. It now wears Pachmayr rubber grips. and they're just perfect for a gun like this.
Do you practice with soft loaded 44 special? I've heard guys swap a 629 steel cylinder into this gun and have been very happy with it.

I got the 340pd on the way, 11.2 ounce .357 magnum, that might give this thing a run for it's money on pain, probably a bit different pain but pain none the less.

I love the revolver but the weight would make me shoot 44 spc. or not full house 44 mag
perceived recoil aside, that thing would shake itself to pieces long before my 69 or 629 lose time.
Not as a personal slam, but I’m pretty sure your hands would give out before that S&W got loose. It probably would take a lot more full house/Buffalo Bore loads than I would care to put through it.
@@raleighthomas3079 as much as i love my s&w wheelguns, i've worked on enough 3 series to wonder why people buy them. if you like em, all the power to ya but steel always wins in terms of toughness regardless of whomever is judging it.

That injury you took to the webbing of your hand is hysterical only because I suffered the exact same experience with a 629PC 2.6" that I used to own. Had the wood secret service grips with no place for the last finger to rest. The 1st time I shot it, I was bleeding in the webbing by the 4th shot. Great video man; it totally took me back! 😂

Mine is quad ported by Mag-Na-Port. Changed out the titanium cylinder for a fluted stainless steel 629 cylinder. Hogue 500 S&W rubber recoil absorbing grip to aid recoil impulse mitigation. Much cosmetic changes but only those changes above are to reduce recoil impulse. Love mine.

Bless your heart Brother. Thank you for suffering for the cause. I am not sure we should thank the fella that sent you this gun. He is probably trying to find out if you were able to handle this brute. Well you did but not without cost. Lol. I had the 3" 629 for quite some time. I felt it was a bit excessive with recoil. I put the Pachmayr diamond grip on it and my 6" 629 and it has proven to be the best recoil taming grip I have found.
I have had around a dozen 44 magnum revolvers (S&W and Ruger) with barrel lengths from 3" to 10 5/8". I would give them serious consideration. Well done as always.
When I saw the gloves I knew it was going to be brutal. Hurt just watching. Gloves do make a difference especially shooting several magnum loads. Appreciate what you do to make great videos. 🙏 👍💥
Almost bought one of these...then I got to my senses and picked up a 629 Deluxe 6.5". Love the look of this and if you're carrying it, beneficial to shed all that weight, but man I can only imagine the handful it would be compared to a stainless model. They sure are gorgeous!
You're a brave man. My 4" 629 ceases to be fun shooting after about 20 rounds. Don't think I would want to try a lighter revolver. Jess

Buffalo this reminds me of a Scottish proverb “Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me!”. And no one going to call you a whimp, sir! Give us an update if the owner took his gun back or just said “That’s why I had you shoot it first … no no really I don’t need it back anytime soon, keep it as long as you want, you shoot so well don’t you want one for your collection, I know you can pick one up since it’s left such and impression on you!”
Great review. I've been shooting .44 mag all my life and I've never seen anything like this! Wow! A guy could still practice with specials or light loads. When I was living in Colorado I did a lot of hiking, camping bowhunting. Much of the time I carried a 629 classic for the reasons mentioned. It was legal to carry a handgun while bowhunting, yes. This truly would have been a welcome addition. But wow, that was brutal on your hand. To continue shooting after being brutalized is ample proof you are not a wuss....😉😆😉

I had mine magna ported - made it very easy to shoot once done.
I have a theory that the rubber grip would damage the skin on your thumb worse than the smooth wood grip because it will stick to the skin as the gun tries to move. Gloves might help a little bit but also it helps if you rotate your hand round the grip slightly to move that joint of your thumb left out of line of the recoil of the grip.
Wow. Ouch. That’s a carry much and shoot seldom gun. We used to say that about the Charter Arms .44 Special. I have a .44 Mountain Gun (from the first run, the one they called Mountain Revolver, no writing on the barrel), and I thought that was a killer light .44 when I shot some 320 grain “bear loads.” Pachmayr Grippers help, but not enough. A friend carries a 329PD in a shoulder rig, He admits he doesn’t shoot it often, and it’s much more tolerable with .44 Special loads. But one heck of a niche gun. Great video!👍

I love the .44 magnum! I have 2 model 29's, one is with 4" barrel, the other is 6 1/2" barrel. there are more powerful revolvers out there but the .44 magnum will get the job done and will cleanly kill anything that needs shooting. The good thing about the .44 mag is that there is a lot of bullet weights available and it can be handloaded to your liking. My favorite load is 12gr of Unique pushing a 200gr JHP bullet. This load is plenty strong for Deer and Hogs and the recoil is tolerable.
Light weight makes recoil a special kind of unpleasant.
I used to Elk hunt in Colorado in an area with a lot of bears. It was also at high altitude so any extra weight seemed twice as bad. I bought one of these revolvers thinking it would be the perfect high altitude bear repellent.
However after firing some full boogie 44 Magnum loads I decided it wouldn’t work out as I had hoped. I would have to carry two guns! The 44 Magnum from Hades for me and another gun to give my hunting companion so he could hold it on me and force me to shoot the bear!

Yeeeaahhh. My chest holster distributes the weight of my Redhawk 4.2 inch just fine lol, I had to get a pachmayr that covers the backstrap and its almost double the weight of this. Thanks for taking it for the team

I had to load down for mine. Full power ammo was making the cylinder turn and jam up. .44 spl ammo works well, but is very hard to find and expensive, so I just load for mine using reduced charges, and that makes it more fun to shoot. I don't mind, because I load most of my .44 ammo anyway, as factory rounds are ridiculously expensive. But the light weight and big punch of this gun makes it particularly nice for the trail, and I would not sell it or trade it.

And here I thought my .44mag S&W Model 69 with 2.75" barrel had a brutal recoil...This one looks even more radical. (I have not fired anything over 250gr in my 69)

Two-legged predators are good with 44 Special loads and 44 magnum 265 grain Dangerous Game loads for four legged attacks.
I am a huge fan of 357 and 44 mag handguns and am very partial to S&W, owning 6 44mags, all 4" barrels or less and 3 357 mags, again with 4" barrels or less. I shoot 44spl powered loads all the way up to underwood and Buffalo bore stuff. I never minded recoil and am accurate and consistent with all of them. I was pumped to purchase the PD and when I held it for the first time I was in love with the look, finish and feel. I went home, jammed some 240gr Underwood thumpers in it, fired all 6, put it back in the box and sold it back to the gun store the next day.
To say the recoil this firearm has is brutal is a huge understatement. It is probably 100 times more punishing and uncomfortable to fire with full power loads than a 500 S&W snub nose. This is a ridiculous weapon. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Couple of my buddies love it in a "burn my hand with fire to see the skin bubble" kind of way. More power to them. I see no purpose in a firearm that is a bit more convenient in weight but absolute punishing to shoot.
Good video. Thanks, and glad I saw it. I carry a Kimber 2" .357 (18.5 oz) as a woods gun. I carry a mid range 158/hard cast and it's OK to shoot with that but at magnum velocities, it's no picnic at all. If I decide that the bears are buying kevlar, I might want more power but I'll definitely pass on this beast. Something 'mild' like a 10mm maybe!

I picked up the S&W 69. It’s the five shot L frame. You can one handed mag dump it. (Cylinder dump). I only put one cylinders worth through it as We had to get home. My best friend did too. We talked about it the next day. Our palms were a little tender to say the least!

I know your pain. I have the Taurus equivalent, the Ultra Light Magnum. It's listed as 28oz. If you've ever used an aluminum bat to swing for the fences only to hit a utility pole during sub-zero temps, repeatedly, that's what your hand feels like after a few cylinders fired from this gun. On the plus side though, it is very light and comfortable while in the woods. It is very accurate. I've taken 3 deer with mine over the years.
That's one of those guns that enthusiastic beginner buys shoots one time and either trades it back or sells it. Either way I don't see them going back to the range for another beating.
Nutnfancy had the same experience with his 329PD. My 4 inch M29 is bad enough in all steel. Side note, I finally got the 8 shot S&W 627 Pro revolver in 4 inch, outstanding .357 magnum.
same thing happened to my thumb webbing area. I like the rubber grip a lot more! Thinking of getting the pachmayr grip.
You should try the Hogue Tamer grips for the .500 Magnums. When I had my Scandium framed guns, it worked tremedously to dampen recoil. In the immortal words of a former President, "I feel your pain..."

I remember when this came out I had to have one. Owning a 629 saved me. Even a 4" 629 puts the sting in the hand with real 44 mag loads. Those give me yet more appreciation for 357. As far as 454 goes I'd rather have a Casull than a Chevrolet. Might go broke feeding either.

Hogue makes an excellent aftermarket rubber grip that resembles the one supplied by S&W, and it's noticeably better at absorbing recoil. Hogue calls it the Tamer monogrip.

And Buffalo, I found the hogue and synthetic grips actually tend to hand onto your hands hard when you fire them. I good solid set of wood grips make these much more easy to handle. Let it recoil and just give it direction. The hogues that came with mine would hold onto your hands and give you every ounce of recoil.

A younger friend of mine has one. .44 mag ammo is scarce and expensive, so I only shot two rounds. The recoil wasn't too bad. My friend said he's usually done after one cylinder. I can imagine.

I have an S&W Alaskan Backpacker which is the same basic revolver but a 2.5” barrel and weighs about 20 oz and it’s wicked to shoot so 44 specials are what gets shot from it, I have a S&W 3” barrel 327 Federal Mag factory comp that I think hurts more than the 44 mag the 44 mag I mentioned comes with Hogue grips and they do not tame the pain at all, very thin grips with a exposed back strap
