I wish I could find a hero that would take me off a white horse and take me to their castle in the clouds but that is a fairytale! This movie was amazing during its time! I saw Andre the Giant leaving a restaurant once. I swear, he had trouble fitting through the door. He looked like a regular guy going through a window. There was another guy on the sidewalk giving Andre the stink eye. When Andre got clear of the door he gave me a super quick look and a smile, then, in true wrestler fashion, he frowned and stomped up to the scowling guy who was now looking like he would loose controll of his bowels. Andre then shook the guys hand with a big smile, quick shoulder squeeze like they were old friends and walked off. Stink eye just stood there mouth breathing. It was the best physical comedy I've ever seen.
Mandy Patinkin tells a story of Andre..he noticed the big guy was sitting alone, so he went and asked if he was ok because he was worried. Andre said, "I'm happy. This is the first time in my life that no one pays attention to me, I'm just one of the guys. You have no idea what that's like." Just telling the story, Mandy couldn't hold back the tears.
Andre the Giant deserves to be remembered as Andre the GENTLE giant. I heard nothing but sweet stories about him over the years. If there is an afterlife, he is spending it pain-free with happy children climbing him like a tree and laughing.

I donated a Princess Bride dvd to our waiting room at work. Amongst a dozen or so dvd's, this gets played at least 3 times a week and staff always stops and watches a scene without hesitation. No one ever gets tired of it.
I think he should play him in a biopic. With grey hair, he'd look more like Clinton than Dennis Quaid (although Quaid did a good job with the voice too)

I can fully visualize that priest/bishop and remember the exact intonation in which he said those lines, and gosh that was one of the funniest parts (among many) of the movie.

A friend of mine got married in 1992. driving to the wedding a friend and I thought it would be a great joke to break the tension, if we could get the minister to start with 'mawige' but we were running late and just slipped into the church. The minister came out AND ACTUALLY HAD THAT SPEECH IMPEDIMENT . My friend and i just sat there, smothering laughs, not daring to look at each other as snorts leaked out. God it was painful.
I love Danny Divito, but honestly I don't think he could have pulled off a better job than wallace did. The charecter would have been perceived so much more different. Always my favorite movie of all time
Yeah, Danny has a toughness to him that wouldn’t have made the role work. The combination of Vizzini’s overconfident nature combined with how whiny and bitchy Wallace played him made for such a wonderful result.

Her body language with him is so sweet, they lean into one another but especially her. Guess you really can't take away that magical feeling they probably felt filming together no matter how much time has passed.

This is one of my favorite movies that I've seen at least a dozen times. I feel like I can quote the whole movie, but here is my Princess Bride Story: the scene on the ship where Vizzini, Inago and Fezzik are trying to get away with Buttercup. Vizzini had revealed that Buttercup is going to be killed, and Fezzik and Inago are upset & complaining to Vizzini. Vizzini says: "And remember this, never forget this: [yelling] when I found you, you were so slobbering drunk, you couldn't buy brandy! [Turning to Fezzik] And you! Friendless, brainless, helpless, hopeless! Do you want me to send you to where you were? Unemployed, in Greenland?!" My 3 younger brothers and I burst out laughing because it was just like our mom when we were in trouble and getting cussed out. She'd start by yelling at one, then work her way through all four of us with, AND YOU... About a week or two after we'd seen the movie (mom missed it) us kids got into trouble, and sure enough, she did it. Michael was yelled at first, then she turned to me, pointing, and said, "AND YOU!!" All four of us burst out laughing so hard, we couldn't breathe. It was totally spontaneous. I think we were literally rolling on the floor at one point. Mom stood there in total shock, looking from one to the other like we had lost our minds. She could not BELIEVE that we could laugh at her while getting told off. I remember her eyes just got huge, and she couldn't even talk, her mouth just kept opening and closing, spluttering like a fish, which just made it funnier. By the time we could speak, and explain it to her, she couldn't recall what she had been yelling about, so we took off outside. When my mom finally did see the movie, we all yelled, mom, this is the part that's you!! She didn't admit it, but she blushed so I knew she spotted the similarity. I'm sure this is a long boring story to everyone else, but it's really one of my favourite memories of childhood.
My sister’s first boyfriend knew how much she loved this movie. He bought it for her on VHS, and signed the birthday card “As you wish”. So sweet and romantic!
It’s wonderful that the cast still appreciates the film. So many stars crap on their most famous work. They get how important this is to people. So many people have great memories sharing this with their parents and then sharing it with their own children.
I ALWAYS said this to my husband when he was taking our dog for a long walk in the woods. It was also the very last thing I said to my dog when we had to put him down. I hope he is storming the HELL out of the castle.
As much as it might bother him, I can't believe they never talked "Inigo Montoya" to take part in this reunion. He is arguably a solid piece of the film. People quote him at least as often as the others, if not sometimes more (depending on the situation).
I adore the film but I'd honestly say his "you killed my father" and "you keep using that word" are by far the two most quoted and well-known lines from the movie, even among people who aren't fans or who've only seen it once as kids.

How is Mandy Patinkin not mentioned? "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." is one of the most quotable lines in the film! He was so fabulous in this film, wish he could have been at this reunion too.
It's just great. No agenda, no hamfisted right/left propaganda, or ego swell, just a well-crafted story with fantastic characters. True entertainment for all. Modern filmmakers and writers should take notes.
I think Cary Elwes is right about "As you wish", with every woman wanting to hear it. If he ever comes back to our local comic con, I would love to hear him say that.
It's very rare that all the many elements of a movie come together the way they did for this one.. and that is what it takes to be a true classic. Always on my top ten of all time list.

I loved that movie and watched it with every grandkid who lived in town when they were old enough to appreciate it. That's four times and maybe more. For my birthday one year all four of them spent the night at my house and we watched it again.
I was camping last summer with my sons family we set up a project around the fire and played this movie for my 9yr old grand daughter As we were watching it a couple walked by and said that was one of there favorite movies This movie is timeless AS YOU WISH
The very best part of the movie is when Fred Savage's character asks his grand pa to come back and read it to him again, tomorrow, and of course, Grand pa says "as you wish".. Just a perfect movie..
When I was young, at my first corporate job, a coworker would bring in pictures to show off whenever her cousin visited for the weekend. We got a kick out of seeing Robin Wright and her boyfriend, Sean Penn, eating and hanging out in her living room on the couch! That was so cool!!!
Every once in a while the stars align, the tumblers fall into place, and a combination of writing, actors, and what seems like pure serendipity makes a perfect movie. It happens occasionally with songs and musical groups as well. They're moments to be savored.

This is one of my favorite movies. Fezzik....so loveable. Inigo Montoya...so passionate. Princess Buttercup...so innocent. Westley...the ultimate lover. Miracle Max and Val...miracle makers. Grandpa...perfect Grandpa. All the bad guys...so bad! The movie is such a great adventure.

My mom and her best friend took me to see this in the theater when I was 4 years old. I remember knowing it was a movie set in "old times" and like a fairytale so I remember being confused when it opened up in modern times with Fred Savage, his 80s bedroom and Peter Falk. I even wondered if we were in the wrong theater lol. Cary Elwes became my first crush and he still looks good in 2020. We loved the movie so much we went back to see it 3 more times this time taking my 2 older brothers who were 6 and 10. Became a childhood favorite of ours for awhile.
This is such a timeless movie. I saw it at the drive-in with my parents in 87 when it came out. I shared this movie with my kids and just recently introduced this wonderful movie to my 8 year old god daughter and we laughed, we cried and she became a life long fan that has shared the movie with her best friends. I can not think of another movie that has ment this much to this many people over the last 35 years
My wife and I watched this movie again tonight. I have no idea how many times we have watched it over the years, but it's still fresh and such a lovely story.
Little known fact : the novel was rejected by every agent approached. In desperation, the author dropped a copy on the doorstep of Richard Maidley of the Richard and Judy show, more in disgust than hope with a note. They broadcast it after reading it and the rest is history. Proof positive agents are witless wonders and a dash of good fortune is required even to get a chance. Ask J K Rowling - her first novel was found in a dustbin after the agent threw it away. We have a publisher's bored eight year old daughter to thank for fishing it out and reading it.

Thanks for sharing these stories. Its pretty sad the way things are at the moment. Hardly any agents accept unsolicited material. It is definitely difficult to get material read. Many agents and managers do their clients a huge disservice by rejecting virtually everything unless they recognize a name or letterhead. Oh well.

Richard, 53, offered to write a foreword and allowed her to use their name when approaching potential publishers - and she soon secured her first deal. That's the story, I verified it. I still watch The Princess Bride every time it comes on TV and I love it as much as I did when it first came out. It really is the perfect movie: it has humor, romance, action and can be appreciated by the whole family. I still get chills watching the movie and am glad to see that the cast still has so much love for the film and respect for their fans.
What they say about watching it with our kids is so true. Both my kids have loved this film from the first time they say it and even my daughter still enjoys it as a teen. It truly is the perfect movie.

If your a Princess Bride fan you should see the movie Stardust. Please understand I'm not comparing the two in any way. Stardust just has that Princess Bride feel to it. Plus its just a good movie.

Cary Elwes' Bill Clinton impressions is awesome I saw a different interview where he mimicked Rob Reiner and it made me love him even more, great storyteller

I couldn't believe it when my 38-year-old nephew and my older brother said that they had never seen this film, so I gave them the DVD the following Christmas.
This has been my favorite movie since I went to see it in the theaters in 1987. I didn't really know what the movie was, but I knew it had Billy Crystal and Andre the Giant, and that was enough for me to go see it. For a couple years after I kept trying to get my friends to watch it, but I think the title just made them feel like they would not like it. Finally I literally forced them to watch it when I came to their house to hang out, as the movie started they kept getting up and doing other things, so 10 minutes in I turned the movie off and said "if you are not going to sit and watch this with me, then I am leaving". They were in shock and sat down to watch it... and they loved it!
Oh I will be showing this movie to my great-grand children and friends with kids. Every generation must know of this classic, hilarious, and charming movie! It was a genius project!
They would have had to get a forklift to move him, and how much wine would it take to knock out a nearly 8 ft man, and I can't even imagine his weight. Barrelsful?

To those who adore this movie and still watch it for the umpteenth time, READ THE NOVEL. It's like discovering the movie again. It's not "based on the screenplay" so it's not an exact replica, but it's so well written. Even the introduction is laugh out loud.
Every so often you get a cast that is so into their work as a team on a project that it still shows almost 30 years later. I love this movie. I love those who starred in it. This is the way.
Yeah, me too. Watched with four of my grandkids separately and once all of us. We all loved this movie and I never got tired of it. My tears were for the grandkids I miss, and when I think of this movie I see them as they were then.
When I was a kid, my whole family - aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents included - saw "Princess Bride" in the movie theater together because my uncle loved the book and he insisted we'd all love the movie... needless to say, he was right! It was after we finished the mid-day meal and clean-up on Thanksgiving Day 1987 (we're not a football-watching family). We were a big group: 21 people of 3 generations, including nine kids under age 11. I remember being shocked at the high price of the movie tickets: at our theater they'd just hit $5 per adult, so this was an expensive outing - it cost more than $100 for 21 people! And that didn't include popcorn or Junior Mints! (Shocked to compare this with current prices: I saw "Roma" this weekend at a fancy Landmark theater in NYC: adult tickets there are $18.50 each, and that's just for the movie: there's no imax or 3D surcharge.)
"25 years later, we're still talking about this movie ..... why is that?" Because it's a timeless treasure of a movie. A beautiful Classic. (God help any one movie maker that says "REMAKE")
I remember someone telling the following story about Rob Reiner and Andre- Rob wanted Andre to play Fezzik, that was his absolute first choice. His concern, however, was that being French, he didn't think that Andre would know any English and he would have problems when it came to reciting lines as well as communication in general. But Rob also thought that Andre, being a giant, would be super strong and therefore the physical stunts would be easily handled by Andre. When Reiner met Andre, he discovered that Andre was the complete opposite of what he thought Andre would be. Andre, despite his low voice and thick accent, could not only speak and understand English, but could do so fluently. He had zero problem speaking or being understood. However, because of the disease he had which kept him growing up to the day he died (acromegaly), his back was so weak that he couldn't lift anything. Many of the stunts and shots they took with Andre being something was actually set up so Andre didn't have to hold anything. Remember at the end of the movie when Fezzik found the four white horses and the group was going to get away from Humperdinck? Remember when Fezzik caught Buttercup as she jumped from the tower? They had it set up so Robin Wright was only around two or three feet suspended in the aid, and she, all 130lb at the very most, landed in Andre's arms. That in of itself was almost enough to cause Andre to fall. His health really was in decline at that time, and that's just too bad. I may have details about this wrong, and if I do, by all means correct me. It's been years since I heard that story and it is very likely I have details wrong.
i'd ask him to say something by james earl jones in star wars, just to see the reaction on his face, whether it's of amusement, or of someone who thinks he is being confronted by a person that mistook him for james earl jones.
Yeah some actors get pissed. I think I heard Bruce Campbell say in an interview once he'd kick a guy's ass if he wouldn't stop shouting at him to say This Is My Boomstick! "I ain't your monkey!"
Peter Cooke's Priest character was the most memorable of all in the wedding scene. His R's and L's being pronounced as W's. "Wuv. Twu wuv." I laugh so hard every time I see that part. As a matter of fact, I watched the scene just last night on here. Great stuff. Cooke's portrayal is at least par with "INCONCEIVABLE!", "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." and others.

This is one of my favorite movies that I've seen at least a dozen times. I feel like I can quote the whole movie, but here is my Princess Bride Story:
the scene on the ship where Vizzini, Inago and Fezzik are trying to get away with Buttercup. Vizzini had revealed that Buttercup is going to be killed, and Fezzik and Inago are upset & complaining to Vizzini. Vizzini says:
"And remember this, never forget this: [yelling] when I found you, you were so slobbering drunk, you couldn't buy brandy! [Turning to Fezzik] And you! Friendless, brainless, helpless, hopeless! Do you want me to send you to where you were? Unemployed, in Greenland?!"
My 3 younger brothers and I burst out laughing because it was just like our mom when we were in trouble and getting cussed out. She'd start by yelling at one, then work her way through all four of us with, AND YOU...
About a week or two after we'd seen the movie (mom missed it) us kids got into trouble, and sure enough, she did it. Michael was yelled at first, then she turned to me, pointing, and said, "AND YOU!!" All four of us burst out laughing so hard, we couldn't breathe. It was totally spontaneous. I think we were literally rolling on the floor at one point.
Mom stood there in total shock, looking from one to the other like we had lost our minds. She could not BELIEVE that we could laugh at her while getting told off. I remember her eyes just got huge, and she couldn't even talk, her mouth just kept opening and closing, spluttering like a fish, which just made it funnier. By the time we could speak, and explain it to her, she couldn't recall what she had been yelling about, so we took off outside. When my mom finally did see the movie, we all yelled, mom, this is the part that's you!! She didn't admit it, but she blushed so I knew she spotted the similarity. I'm sure this is a long boring story to everyone else, but it's really one of my favourite memories of childhood.

My sister’s first boyfriend knew how much she loved this movie. He bought it for her on VHS, and signed the birthday card “As you wish”. So sweet and romantic!
It’s wonderful that the cast still appreciates the film. So many stars crap on their most famous work. They get how important this is to people. So many people have great memories sharing this with their parents and then sharing it with their own children.
I worked at a summer camp last year, and not a single kid had heard of this movie. Broke my heart. 🥺

As much as it might bother him, I can't believe they never talked "Inigo Montoya" to take part in this reunion. He is arguably a solid piece of the film. People quote him at least as often as the others, if not sometimes more (depending on the situation).

I adore the film but I'd honestly say his "you killed my father" and "you keep using that word" are by far the two most quoted and well-known lines from the movie, even among people who aren't fans or who've only seen it once as kids.

How is Mandy Patinkin not mentioned? "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." is one of the most quotable lines in the film! He was so fabulous in this film, wish he could have been at this reunion too.

this was one of those movies, that just didn't have a mean bone in it's body. Every shot, every line was so perfect.
It's just great. No agenda, no hamfisted right/left propaganda, or ego swell, just a well-crafted story with fantastic characters. True entertainment for all. Modern filmmakers and writers should take notes.
I think Cary Elwes is right about "As you wish", with every woman wanting to hear it. If he ever comes back to our local comic con, I would love to hear him say that.
It's very rare that all the many elements of a movie come together the way they did for this one.. and that is what it takes to be a true classic. Always on my top ten of all time list.

I loved that movie and watched it with every grandkid who lived in town when they were old enough to appreciate it. That's four times and maybe more. For my birthday one year all four of them spent the night at my house and we watched it again.
I was camping last summer with my sons family we set up a project around the fire and played this movie for my 9yr old grand daughter As we were watching it a couple walked by and said that was one of there favorite movies This movie is timeless AS YOU WISH

This is one of my favorite movies. Fezzik....so loveable. Inigo Montoya...so passionate. Princess Buttercup...so innocent. Westley...the ultimate lover. Miracle Max and Val...miracle makers. Grandpa...perfect Grandpa. All the bad guys...so bad! The movie is such a great adventure.

Uh.... no one has fond memories of working with Mandy, especially the Princess Bride people.
My mom and her best friend took me to see this in the theater when I was 4 years old. I remember knowing it was a movie set in "old times" and like a fairytale so I remember being confused when it opened up in modern times with Fred Savage, his 80s bedroom and Peter Falk. I even wondered if we were in the wrong theater lol. Cary Elwes became my first crush and he still looks good in 2020. We loved the movie so much we went back to see it 3 more times this time taking my 2 older brothers who were 6 and 10. Became a childhood favorite of ours for awhile.
This is such a timeless movie. I saw it at the drive-in with my parents in 87 when it came out. I shared this movie with my kids and just recently introduced this wonderful movie to my 8 year old god daughter and we laughed, we cried and she became a life long fan that has shared the movie with her best friends. I can not think of another movie that has ment this much to this many people over the last 35 years

Little known fact : the novel was rejected by every agent approached. In desperation, the author dropped a copy on the doorstep of Richard Maidley of the Richard and Judy show, more in disgust than hope with a note. They broadcast it after reading it and the rest is history. Proof positive agents are witless wonders and a dash of good fortune is required even to get a chance. Ask J K Rowling - her first novel was found in a dustbin after the agent threw it away. We have a publisher's bored eight year old daughter to thank for fishing it out and reading it.

Thanks for sharing these stories. Its pretty sad the way things are at the moment. Hardly any agents accept unsolicited material. It is definitely difficult to get material read. Many agents and managers do their clients a huge disservice by rejecting virtually everything unless they recognize a name or letterhead. Oh well.
That’s pretty impressive since the book was published in 1973, when Richard Madeley was 17 years old. He met Judy Finnegan in 1982 and their show began in 1988, a year after the film was released.

Richard, 53, offered to write a foreword and allowed her to use their name when approaching potential publishers - and she soon secured her first deal.

I still watch The Princess Bride every time it comes on TV and I love it as much as I did when it first came out. It really is the perfect movie: it has humor, romance, action and can be appreciated by the whole family. I still get chills watching the movie and am glad to see that the cast still has so much love for the film and respect for their fans.

What they say about watching it with our kids is so true. Both my kids have loved this film from the first time they say it and even my daughter still enjoys it as a teen. It truly is the perfect movie.

If your a Princess Bride fan you should see the movie Stardust. Please understand I'm not comparing the two in any way. Stardust just has that Princess Bride feel to it. Plus its just a good movie.

I couldn't believe it when my 38-year-old nephew and my older brother said that they had never seen this film, so I gave them the DVD the following Christmas.
I LOVE how much LOVE that the cast still had for each other after all these years...............do you know what that is? That's a FAMILY!!!
This has been my favorite movie since I went to see it in the theaters in 1987. I didn't really know what the movie was, but I knew it had Billy Crystal and Andre the Giant, and that was enough for me to go see it. For a couple years after I kept trying to get my friends to watch it, but I think the title just made them feel like they would not like it. Finally I literally forced them to watch it when I came to their house to hang out, as the movie started they kept getting up and doing other things, so 10 minutes in I turned the movie off and said "if you are not going to sit and watch this with me, then I am leaving". They were in shock and sat down to watch it... and they loved it!
Oh I will be showing this movie to my great-grand children and friends with kids. Every generation must know of this classic, hilarious, and charming movie! It was a genius project!

Love love LOVE this movie!! I was in 4th grade when my Mom took me to the theater to go see it. I was 9. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to see it. She is 3. She heard her Dad say to me "As you wish" one day answering me sarcastically and ever since she says As you wish, but she doesn't know the reference or significance of it. I can't wait to show her this movie one day!!
To those who adore this movie and still watch it for the umpteenth time, READ THE NOVEL. It's like discovering the movie again. It's not "based on the screenplay" so it's not an exact replica, but it's so well written. Even the introduction is laugh out loud.

Every so often you get a cast that is so into their work as a team on a project that it still shows almost 30 years later. I love this movie. I love those who starred in it. This is the way.

that really is a timeless film….and it's one the whole family can enjoy together. They don't make them like that anymore.
When I was a kid, my whole family - aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents included - saw "Princess Bride" in the movie theater together because my uncle loved the book and he insisted we'd all love the movie... needless to say, he was right! It was after we finished the mid-day meal and clean-up on Thanksgiving Day 1987 (we're not a football-watching family). We were a big group: 21 people of 3 generations, including nine kids under age 11. I remember being shocked at the high price of the movie tickets: at our theater they'd just hit $5 per adult, so this was an expensive outing - it cost more than $100 for 21 people! And that didn't include popcorn or Junior Mints! (Shocked to compare this with current prices: I saw "Roma" this weekend at a fancy Landmark theater in NYC: adult tickets there are $18.50 each, and that's just for the movie: there's no imax or 3D surcharge.)

It will never get old. It's one of those note-perfect movies where you wouldn't change a single thing.

I remember someone telling the following story about Rob Reiner and Andre-
Rob wanted Andre to play Fezzik, that was his absolute first choice. His concern, however, was that being French, he didn't think that Andre would know any English and he would have problems when it came to reciting lines as well as communication in general. But Rob also thought that Andre, being a giant, would be super strong and therefore the physical stunts would be easily handled by Andre.
When Reiner met Andre, he discovered that Andre was the complete opposite of what he thought Andre would be. Andre, despite his low voice and thick accent, could not only speak and understand English, but could do so fluently. He had zero problem speaking or being understood. However, because of the disease he had which kept him growing up to the day he died (acromegaly), his back was so weak that he couldn't lift anything. Many of the stunts and shots they took with Andre being something was actually set up so Andre didn't have to hold anything.
Remember at the end of the movie when Fezzik found the four white horses and the group was going to get away from Humperdinck? Remember when Fezzik caught Buttercup as she jumped from the tower? They had it set up so Robin Wright was only around two or three feet suspended in the aid, and she, all 130lb at the very most, landed in Andre's arms. That in of itself was almost enough to cause Andre to fall.
His health really was in decline at that time, and that's just too bad.
I may have details about this wrong, and if I do, by all means correct me. It's been years since I heard that story and it is very likely I have details wrong.

I think it would be really rude to ask people to say lines on command, as they said people do all the time. Actors aren't puppets.
i'd ask him to say something by james earl jones in star wars, just to see the reaction on his face, whether it's of amusement, or of someone who thinks he is being confronted by a person that mistook him for james earl jones.
Yeah some actors get pissed. I think I heard Bruce Campbell say in an interview once he'd kick a guy's ass if he wouldn't stop shouting at him to say This Is My Boomstick! "I ain't your monkey!"
Peter Cooke's Priest character was the most memorable of all in the wedding scene. His R's and L's being pronounced as W's. "Wuv. Twu wuv." I laugh so hard every time I see that part. As a matter of fact, I watched the scene just last night on here. Great stuff. Cooke's portrayal is at least par with "INCONCEIVABLE!", "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." and others.
