    To this day, I am struck by how perfect the deliverance of "I want my father back, you son of a bitch" is. And the look on his face as he sticks the sword in even further. That's as good of an acting job as you can ever find, anywhere.

    The Princess Bride is such a special movie, over 30 years after it was released, the actors are still asked about it , still asked to say lines from it. Every time I see one of these interviews with the cast, you see the joy in their eyes when they talk about the Princess Bride

      I once read an interview where Mandy Patinkin claimed that nearly every day since 1987, someone asks him to say The Line. In fact, he sat for an interview with 60 Minutes on a completely unrelated topic, and the first thing out of the reporter's mouth, in the context of this completely sober, adult, serious interview ... was a request to say it.
      For the record, if I ever have the opportunity, I will immediately and without a shred of hesitation ask him to say it.

    @stevewyche5232 Před 3 lety +44

    You can tell that for Mandy, that line really was very meaningful to him. I love how he explains that as 30 year old Mandy the line just came out of his mouth and he thought nothing of it. At 60, he really HEARD the line and connected with it. I think he connected with it so well not just because he feels that revenge is futile but I think he spent a lot of his youth hating cancer, feeling that he was robbed of his father and felt the need to 'get even'. As he got older and matured, I believe he realized that the hate and anger was accomplishing nothing.

His sincerity in hating cancer and transferring that hatred into his pursuit of Count Rugen comes from the deepest part of the gut, and it SHOWS. I, like Mandy, hate death with the purplest of purple passions. Bravo, Mandy, your good looks and heartfelt acting has graced more than one movie (Yentl also comes to mind).

      The book is the best thing I've ever read. It does postmodern things that everyone in their mother thinks is the best thing since sliced bread ... in any other book. And it does it better than any other book. But becuase it's a 'fairy tale' by title people dismiss these things and dismiss the general brilliance of the prose. Reminds me of the way critics bashed Vertigo. It's a damn shame.

    Bless this man and all those who participated in the making of this great film!! I have watched it probably dozens of times since it came out. And his role was so powerful!! While watching this, I realized that the "Line" he refers to, also describes at least in part, what PTSD is. You enlist in the military at a very impressionable age 18-20. You really have no idea who you are at that point in your life even if you don't know it. Then you get trained to kill (to survive). You can't kill things you love so you learn to kill things you hate. I remember coming out of boot-camp knowing I could kill a man at 300 meters with an open sight. Fortunately for me, I was in at the right time, too late for Korea and too early for Vietnam, so I never got to put that skill into practical use. In my opinion, Three years in combat doesn't seem like a lifetime unless you're the one experiencing it. But after Basic and then advanced training your former life seems so far away and so short compared to who you are at that time and the circumstances you are going through at that time. I think part of PTSD is that period when you can still vividly remember the danger and the adrenaline rush of fear, the loss of comrades and the feeling of guilt that you came back and they didn't. Ironically, after those feelings go away, you, in some ways, miss it! So it is hard to live a life of hate and once you defeat that which you hate, your fearful of how you will go on without it! It was indeed a powerful line!

A truly brilliant (and in my opinion underrated) actor; one of the best of all time. The true greats will die with his generation, I'm sorry to say. They don't make anything of real substance anymore. Not like they used to, that's for sure. We really didn't realize how blessed we were to grow up during the time we did. All the greatness there once was is fading away (what little of it there may still be left).

    It would have been magical to hear Mandy recite the line. Unfortunately, they completely ruined the moment by playing the movie audio at the same time.

    I'm a 69 yr old Male and I Love this movie! Pls don't ask me why 'cos I honestly don't know. Oh, wait, Buttercup might have something to do with that! Wallace Shawn was hilarious as well, & who doesn't love Andre The Giant!

    They're closer to intentionally make interviews appear more personal, if not for the interviewee, in front of a live audience, for those watching on tv. There also instructed to, thus enabling the camera to zoom in, and still have both captured within a tv screen's limited field of view. Given the chance I would definitely ask for a rendition of that classic intro.
