Okay for those of yall who are confused, here's the film explained:
The film is a metaphorical experience for God and Mother Nature/Earth. Jennifer Lawrence is Mother Nature. Watch the film closely and you'll see the parallels, the first people are Adam and Eve, the murderers are Cain and Abel, etc. The baby Mother Nature has represents Jesus. And so on and so forth.
Its about how humanity is so bad we'll just destroy Mother Nature and each other. God takes out the heart, the seed for Mother Nature and makes a new one, hoping each time to create a world that will not be destroyed by humanity.

I'd like to point out how God is portrayed in this movie tho. He always treats Mother Nature bad, he ignores her in the movie and says and does bad stuff while she still loves him unconditionally, does everything for him, cleans the house and *never* leaves it.
But in the end, he NEEDS her to reset the time, he needs her heart because HER love for him is the key to restart. And no matter what, it always ends up the same way (the house burning) because in the end, God needs his worshippers and he likes the idea of being adored (like how he's super excited about the reader who visits them, and how he trusted his fans to literally HOLD his newborn) more than he values Mother Nature.
It's a really smart take on Christianity by Darren Aronofsky. He either appreciates religion so much or absolutely despises it lol

Wanting the movie itself to be changed in order to stop the feeling of discomfort is even stranger to me, as if everything should never give anyone any discomfort and as if discomfort is something that should be banned from being felt altogether for some reason. It's as if many people have been unable to process discomfort and therefore want others to never trigger a negative feeling within them, even in entertainment. It's just so odd, especially when I hear someone say it out loud.

I get it, but I don´t agree. I mean, I agree in the part that domestic violence is terrible, the violence towards women is a real thing and we should put an end to it, but this part of the movie was not about that, it was not about hitting a woman, if the character was portrayed by a man, they would beat him , the moment doesnt have to do with gender. Also lets remember that movies want to tell and show a story, there were a lot of brutal scences in this movie, and the point is to see them, to make a statement. Its not real, they didnt hit her IRL, its effects, CGI and makeup.

I disagree. The whole end of the movie was supposed to be awful. They literally snapped a baby's neck and ate him, just as brutal of an act to witness. It's not about assaulting women it's about how we treat the world. It is a harsh metaphor but it is powerful and I don't think the scene was done just for the sake of it or shock value. Also how God is supposed to be loving and caring, but has selfish desires of wanting/ needing to be worshipped. The movie is rooted in mostly the catholic religion so of course mother nature would be a woman and God is a man.

There are a lot of problems in the industry that need to be addressed, and in recent years have been. But women being beaten just for the sake of being beaten? I've never heard of that before. Now, women are commonly used as the victims bc they're seen more as innocent damsels (hence why so many women lead in horror movies) to the audience and the higher ups, because a man being in that same situation is seen as weak or soft when in reality he's scared for his life just like the women was lol Correct me if I'm wrong, but men get physically beaten in movies far more than women ever have or ever will.

It's very easy to see what he's going for, especially when you know the "names" of the characters (like "Him" and disciples) and I think that he should've at least done something more interesting than assign an arbitrary metaphor to each character in the movie and then recreate a religious belief in a graphic, disturbing manner. I suppose we are all allowed to have our own subjectivities, however this movie is a (much needed) critical portrayal of our -humanity’s- relationship with our planet, religion, politics, and i guess it’s also very cool that you can analyze it from different paradigms (spiritual, political, artistic, literary, among many others.)

I’m not sure if I’m alone in this, but I hate movies that are so “metaphorical”, “deep”, or “intellectual” that you either have to rewatch if 5 times to understand it or Google what the meaning is. I’m fine with everything being revealed at the end in a big twist, thats fine, but movies where I don’t understand things at the end are irritating to me.

Yes, I'm sure people with some sort of superiority complex will love that not everyone gets what this is about the first time, but if your movie is not understandable, I struggle to comprehend how it's a good movie. Unpopular opinion perhaps but, you clearly didn't do that good of a job at your storytelling if a big majority of the audience left the film absolutely confused the first 3 times they watched it 😂
I got the same feeling with "I'm thinking of ending things". The movie ended and I was, like the fuck did I just watch I understood literally nothing of it ☠️

      @jahanarahgraham8003 Před 2 lety +73

Exactly, I think Mr GG said something like this where he said that the fact that he had to google or watch the directors cut to understand the meaning of the movie, the director didn’t do their job right. Deeper meanings don’t have to be this huge convoluded puzzle that only ‘art people’ understand. That’s not the point of metaphorical movies. The whole point is showing an up audience a different perspective in an easy and digestible way.

I'm sure some insecure assholes will claim to like movies like this because they think it makes them so superior to everyone else, but coming from someone who is the exact opposite of your mentality, you are fine and valid. It does not make you any less smarter because you like a clear point in your media. Just means we consume things differently. Doesn't make anyone smarter than anybody.

You're literally out there watching the movies that some of us wouldn't or couldn't alone and you make it so interesting. As long as you're having fun, I know I will always be having fun

When you said that bit about health care workers not being saints, I had flashbacks to my fiction challenge where they gave me three items: Bear Rug, Thriller, Maternity Ward. So I made the dude a total douche who looks at women as objects, and got haunted down by a victim of his. The judges were all like: "Sorry, no points. We just don't find it believable such a shitty person would work in a maternity ward." Totes skipping the part where he subbed in for a nurse he wanted in the pants of.

when i watched your commentaries for hereditary and midsommar they fucked me up because those movies are both really disturbing so i've been hesitant to watch the "girl who's scared of everything watches [insert horror movie here]" videos in case you watch another movie that fucks me up but this and ma weren't too bad! thank you for making the experiences fun and editing the vids in a way where we're spared of the bad stuff
also don't sweat it on not getting it the first time around, it seems like its a hard metaphor to get and anyone who judges you/says different is just obnoxious

YES EXACTLY. This movie feels like a nightmare that I usually have, in this nightmares I'm always overwhelmed about something, and I'm always disoriented, like I don't know what to do all the time, and ppl are constantly mad at me, shaming me but usually the scenario is my previous schools. I'm always dreaming about teachers treating me like a child, being rlly pissed at me while I never fully understand what the fuck is going on. When I watched this movie I had the same feeling that I have when I wake up from this nightmares, pure confusion and terror
