When Adam and Eve show up and won't leave, my anxiety spiked and never settled for the rest of the movie. That's superb filmmaking.

I love the way this film represents God's words being used to justify the most horrible things.
What do you mean by this?
@@luvliaah2997 Have you never heard of religious extremism?
@@JustAHorrorShow oh yes, i get the context behind "religious extremism". But I wanted to ask you if you believe that this movie truly represents God?
@@luvliaah2997 I personally don't believe in God but I don't think this movie is meant to represent God as he(or it) actually is. It's more meant to represent the relationships between humans, God and nature. So it's more of a representation of how humans interpret God or God's supposed words and how humans selfishly take from nature without giving back.
@@JustAHorrorShow ohhh alr i see what u mean.
This movie was exactly what an anxiety attack feels like
Yes totally!
ikr
Okay for those of yall who are confused, here's the film explained:
The film is a metaphorical experience for God and Mother Nature/Earth. Jennifer Lawrence is Mother Nature. Watch the film closely and you'll see the parallels, the first people are Adam and Eve, the murderers are Cain and Abel, etc. The baby Mother Nature has represents Jesus. And so on and so forth.
Its about how humanity is so bad we'll just destroy Mother Nature and each other. God takes out the heart, the seed for Mother Nature and makes a new one, hoping each time to create a world that will not be destroyed by humanity.
Wow
I'd like to point out how God is portrayed in this movie tho. He always treats Mother Nature bad, he ignores her in the movie and says and does bad stuff while she still loves him unconditionally, does everything for him, cleans the house and *never* leaves it.
But in the end, he NEEDS her to reset the time, he needs her heart because HER love for him is the key to restart. And no matter what, it always ends up the same way (the house burning) because in the end, God needs his worshippers and he likes the idea of being adored (like how he's super excited about the reader who visits them, and how he trusted his fans to literally HOLD his newborn) more than he values Mother Nature.
It's a really smart take on Christianity by Darren Aronofsky. He either appreciates religion so much or absolutely despises it lol
@@downtownscene I believe Darren (the director) is atheist and he's also an environmentalist. I'm leaning that it's meant to shed God in a negative light
@@downtownscene woah
Perfectly explained.
The movie isn't exactly scary or even creepy, but it did give me huge amounts of anxiety and a panic attack... And I have to give it credit for that, because that's what they were going for.
Agree
I think thats the point ...
This is exactly what I went through, and I was amazed at how good the movie did that
Agreed. And not wanting an uncomfortable movie to make you uncomfortable sounds a bit strange to me, especially while having the knowing of what it's about in general. Wanting the movie itself to be changed in order to stop the feeling of discomfort is even stranger to me, as if everything should never give anyone any discomfort and as if discomfort is something that should be banned from being felt altogether for some reason. It's as if many people have been unable to process discomfort and therefore want others to never trigger a negative feeling within them, even in entertainment. It's just so odd, especially when I hear someone say it out loud.
its a more real horror of something happening right now!! truly a master piece !!
Yeah it wasn’t creepy or scary just incredibly mortifying.
I cannot begin to explain the level of hurt and bullshit I went through during the baby scene honestly. I cant deal with baby things in any type of way whether they get hurt, abused, murdered, and a new way they discovered to destroy my no-vomit streak: Eating a baby.

I agree with you about the scene of them beating her up and also in general trying to convey the message of nature being destroyed by aasaulting women especially when its directed by a man is really not it? like violence towards women, domestic violence specifically, is already a real issue it doesnt need to be turned into a metaphor
I get it, but I don´t agree. I mean, I agree in the part that domestic violence is terrible, the violence towards women is a real thing and we should put an end to it, but this part of the movie was not about that, it was not about hitting a woman, if the character was portrayed by a man, they would beat him , the moment doesnt have to do with gender. Also lets remember that movies want to tell and show a story, there were a lot of brutal scences in this movie, and the point is to see them, to make a statement. Its not real, they didnt hit her IRL, its effects, CGI and makeup.
yall are sensitive as hell lmaoo
I disagree. The whole end of the movie was supposed to be awful. They literally snapped a baby's neck and ate him, just as brutal of an act to witness. It's not about assaulting women it's about how we treat the world. It is a harsh metaphor but it is powerful and I don't think the scene was done just for the sake of it or shock value. Also how God is supposed to be loving and caring, but has selfish desires of wanting/ needing to be worshipped. The movie is rooted in mostly the catholic religion so of course mother nature would be a woman and God is a man.
@@Antwannnn soo true not wanting to see women get brutally beat up is beta male sensitive snowflake behavior
@@britszszw8471 I mean when you say it like that it is lol It's a movie first of all...with a message of humans fucking up mother nature and David (I think that's the directors name) conveying that in a way us selfish humans can understand since the earth cant speak for itself. Obviously ANYONE being beat up is fucked and I don't enjoy seeing it but there is context to every movie and to every scene. Given the context of why she was being beat, through the entire film mentally and physically, I see no problem. If you do then good. That's the point. Recycle, ride a bike instead of using your climate shattering car, etc.
I always had respect for this movie because the director said he just wanted a reaction from his audience. He didn’t care if they loved or hated it. He wanted the audience to see the world through mother nature’s eyes and if they got confused or angry, his goal was accomplished.

Your commentary on the abuse of women in media literally hit the center of the target exactly!! It takes me out of the movie & makes me want to turn the movie off instantly. I understand it being gory and hard to watch as well but there’s a point where the line is crossed and male directors tend to cross that line much more than female directors!

Hey Trin,
Something you should really consider about this film is that there is no music (soundtrack or filmscore). Aronovsky and Johann Johannsson (famous film score composer) decided to scrap it. as a music student that studied film score I was so surprised this movie wasn’t brought up in class. But you should look into this is actually very interesting
Btw the thing you said about using violence against women in media for shock value was spot on. Male directors need to stop doing this shit
i completely understand, but i feel like the mother had to to go through the most horrendous things for the husband’s forgiveness for the people that much more infuriating. For biblical reference, the people there did the most horrific things, so i think that is incorporated with the fact that people now don’t give a sh*t about the earth, which is symbolized by the beatdown of Jennifer. (Sorry if this is excessive it’s just that i come from a christian household and i have a bit more knowledge on this stuff but you are completely right with the fact that women in movies shouldn’t be beaten down for no reason)
I feel like this movie is the exception, it was necessary cause that's what's happening with our earth
@@Antwannnn
Ah yes, right on time random person that refuses to believe media has an obsession with violence against women. How wonderful of you to join us today.
Yes, all us women are most definitely making up the fact that beating women is a trope in movies! It’s not like, I don’t know, there have been several actual studies in the film industry that points directly to the conclusion that it is a trope.
I’m glad our womanly trauma is dumb and sensitive to you. Really puts a smile on my dumb little face.
@@Antwannnn "where does that happen in movies" the killing joke by itself is a good example but alot of slasher movies do have a problem with excessive violence towards women, I definitely agree that the baby scene is just as disturbing however movies rarely show graphic child abuse, in fact I was shocked when IT came out bc I thought children were basically off limits for horror victims, but women are consistently beaten or mutilated in horror movies, more than half the time in a manner that's almost sexualized since many are dressed in a revealing way before their murder. It definitely is a problem.
@@giantsalamander8139 can you site a source or just give me some movie examples of this happening bc I've literally *never* heard of this trope in my life and I basically watch movies as an unpaid job on the daily and watch videos about movies on the daily. There are a lot of problems in the industry that need to be addressed, and in recent years have been. But women being beaten just for the sake of being beaten? I've never heard of that before. Now, women are commonly used as the victims bc they're seen more as innocent damsels (hence why so many women lead in horror movies) to the audience and the higher ups, because a man being in that same situation is seen as weak or soft when in reality he's scared for his life just like the women was lol Correct me if I'm wrong, but men get physically beaten in movies far more than women ever have or ever will.

I honestly didn’t start to catch on until the scene where all of his admirers came to the house after he wrote his second book and the scene with the baby. Had to google it after and then everything made sense
Agreed. And while I think the Biblical interpretation is the most interesting because it runs through so many aspects, the ideas that it's about environmentalism or Hinduism or even just about having a relationship with a poet are also correct. It works really well from any of those angles and each one reveals something that a more strict, exclusionary view wouldn't show. Which in a way makes sense, since the Bible isn't just about the various biblical stories, it's about everything.

Nobody understand the whole meaning of the movie at first, so don't worry hahah, it has like two plots the one that shows the analogy of the genesis from the bible and the relationship of god with mother nature and the human beings, and the other plot I thinks is a social criticism about how wild the world is right now and how the humans don't respect the earth and the people that live in it
first time watching mother was confusing asf for me, but after watching a few video essays on it it makes sense! ppl act like you are stupid if you dont understand the story on your first watch
to be honest I think you are supposed to be confused on your first watch. That's why the film is told from Mother's perspective and not The Poet's
@@NicoFitz Nah. If you're making a movie, if you're making *art* in general, you're communicating to your public. It disirrispects the viewers if "they are supposed to be confused on their first watch".
They don't. They're not "supposed to be confused". What kind of communicator you are, what kind of artist you are if you can't even communicate your message correctly with your work? Come on, let's just accept that this is a really shallow attempt at representing Mother Nature and how it gets destroyed by humanity. There are lots of works about this theme and I'm sure some of them did it with much more power than this movie.
I really hope this kind of "for *the authooor* it's supposed to be like this* " mindset disappears someday. Let's not confuse a work that "has its intentions" (I take as an example the ending of Promising Young Woman) to just... Something that failed to deliver its message.

tbh, knowing the meaning of this movie, I wanna say that Aronofsky's take on this cycle is very juvenile and boring, even though he tried to approach it from an art film angle. It's very easy to see what he's going for, especially when you know the "names" of the characters (like "Him" and disciples) and I think that he should've at least done something more interesting than assign an arbitrary metaphor to each character in the movie and then recreate a religious belief in a graphic, disturbing manner. No hate to this movie, I just think it's a lot more boring conceptually than what it was trying to go for.
Jennifer's performance is really good, and I like the idea of using this type of soundtrack.
100% agree it didn’t really feel like he did anything with the metaphor he created
@@alextudway yeah it's just a confused horror retelling of the religious cycle of life story
even though i understand your point, i think you undercut the creativity that goes behind “assigning an arbitrary metaphor”. As a writer i think it’s definitely not easy to come up with a way to retell a very well known story without making it instantly obvious, and i think that this movie accomplishes this with flying colors, proved by trin’s reaction itself. I suppose we are all allowed to have our own subjectivities, however this movie is a (much needed) critical portrayal of our -humanity’s- relationship with our planet, religion, politics, and i guess it’s also very cool that you can analyze it from different paradigms (spiritual, political, artistic, literary, among many others.)
@@twofrid maybe it’s not that cliche to approach it through this metaphor of a man as a creator “god” and woman as Mother Earth “mother” in other fields, but in visual art I’m truly fed up with it. It’s basically the premise of every male artists’ body of work(not every, but an overwhelming amount), so maybe that’s why I can’t find much artistic merit in it. No hate to the film or the creator, I just find it a quite banal approach to this old as time spiritual/metaphysical cycle.
girl PLEASE watch and make a video about Young Royals its soooo good!! + they show real skin details (acne and acne scars) and have a pretty diverse cast (2nd lead male is Hispanic, lead female role is black and "plus-size" (according to TV logic)). Theres not a lot of discussion videos on it rn so i'm STARVING for some.
YEESS I need her reaction
I completely agree with what you said about the beating scene; there’s a point where scenes aren’t “artistic” anymore, just gratuitous and unnecessary. In my opinion, it definitely felt like it was just used for shock value.
Are you gonna react to the Fear Street trilogy cuz "LESBIAN RIGHTS" is all I'm gonna say😌
THERE'S LESBIANS????? SAY LESS
@@20somethingnormalgirl it’s so good!!! I really enjoyed it
It's pretty fucking cool
@@20somethingnormalgirl it’s a really cool concept! i love it
Yes! I was thinking the whole series how much Trin would enjoy it, because lesbian love story!
I’m not sure if I’m alone in this, but I hate movies that are so “metaphorical”, “deep”, or “intellectual” that you either have to rewatch if 5 times to understand it or Google what the meaning is. I’m fine with everything being revealed at the end in a big twist, thats fine, but movies where I don’t understand things at the end are irritating to me.
Yes, I'm sure people with some sort of superiority complex will love that not everyone gets what this is about the first time, but if your movie is not understandable, I struggle to comprehend how it's a good movie. Unpopular opinion perhaps but, you clearly didn't do that good of a job at your storytelling if a big majority of the audience left the film absolutely confused the first 3 times they watched it 😂
I got the same feeling with "I'm thinking of ending things". The movie ended and I was, like the fuck did I just watch I understood literally nothing of it ☠️
Exactly, I think Mr GG said something like this where he said that the fact that he had to google or watch the directors cut to understand the meaning of the movie, the director didn’t do their job right. Deeper meanings don’t have to be this huge convoluded puzzle that only ‘art people’ understand. That’s not the point of metaphorical movies. The whole point is showing an up audience a different perspective in an easy and digestible way.
I'm sure some insecure assholes will claim to like movies like this because they think it makes them so superior to everyone else, but coming from someone who is the exact opposite of your mentality, you are fine and valid. It does not make you any less smarter because you like a clear point in your media. Just means we consume things differently. Doesn't make anyone smarter than anybody.
Plus people have different religions, different values ? As a foreigner , I'm kinda confused by this .
personally i disagree but i think ur opinion is valid!
Trin I just wanted to let you know, that I enjoy your commentaries whatever they are because it feels like I'm watching movies with someone else. You're literally out there watching the movies that some of us wouldn't or couldn't alone and you make it so interesting. As long as you're having fun, I know I will always be having fun
the rant at the end lmao yes, i agree with everything you said. film bro culture really makes it hard to enjoy and watch movies sometimes, which sucks. i recently watched odyssey 2001 and had to look it up cause i didn’t get a single thing loll
Yeah I didn't get that one
When you said that bit about health care workers not being saints, I had flashbacks to my fiction challenge where they gave me three items: Bear Rug, Thriller, Maternity Ward. So I made the dude a total douche who looks at women as objects, and got haunted down by a victim of his. The judges were all like: "Sorry, no points. We just don't find it believable such a shitty person would work in a maternity ward." Totes skipping the part where he subbed in for a nurse he wanted in the pants of.
I feel like you would like the Haunting of Hill House… it’s a little spooky but mostly heartfelt. It is a show tho so not great for a ~movie commentary~ but there is at least one milf in it soooo
Or if hill house might be too scary, haunting of bly manor is in my opinion less scary and there’s a gay so like maybe she’d enjoy tht one more 😂
after this hellish movie you need therapy:
💕 YOUNG ROYALS 💕
TRINN U HAVE TO WATCH YOUNG ROYAls on Netflix is a beautiful gay love story and it portrays mlm so well pls omg
Imagin watching this on a first date *trauma unlocked*
since you did love victor what are the chances we get young royals 👀👀
yesss
Yes please
My God, yes!
I hopee
yes pleaseeeee
when i watched your commentaries for hereditary and midsommar they fucked me up because those movies are both really disturbing so i've been hesitant to watch the "girl who's scared of everything watches [insert horror movie here]" videos in case you watch another movie that fucks me up but this and ma weren't too bad! thank you for making the experiences fun and editing the vids in a way where we're spared of the bad stuff
also don't sweat it on not getting it the first time around, it seems like its a hard metaphor to get and anyone who judges you/says different is just obnoxious
PS thanks for uploading twice in one week :)
i just feel so validated by your anger and your commentary on things like this especially in regards to how women and other marginalized folx are treated in media. i feel like i process and react to things pretty similarly to you so i feel very seen LMAO and i think you bring something really great and authentic to this genre of reacting to movies/commentary so thank youuuuu. also your editing on this was MWAH chefs kiss
If you’re up for challenges, I bet you can’t handle Antichrist (2009)
Oh helllllll no haha
k but why no one has recommended Incident in a ghostland?...
what about Climax?
Bro she could not do that, great movie tho
@@beckybusstop8087 probably not lol
omg trins feeding us with great content 😙
Okay, same about dreams. I keep having dreams where I yell and cry and maybe fight with others. They are not scary or even disturbing, they just make me feel exhausted.
When I first watched this movie, I was legit traumatized. It was literally a one and done for me, but the message behind the movie was very good.
Ah yes, another great addition to the ‘girl who’s scared of everything watches’ series….
PrettyMuchIt, AaronandJo AND Trin?! In one day? I’m so happy
OMG when Trin said why do we trust doctors like they have a degree. I immediately thought of that new show on Peacock called Dr.Death and basically this guy did 33 spinal surgeries and he butchered 31 and killed 2 that show is sooo good! I hope Trin watches it and at least tweets about it lol.
I personally would want a video of you reacting to this again! Cuz I personally find watching a movie again after understanding the ideas it wanted to share is so fun.
the thing that gets me about this movie is when you find out that the real antagonist is all of us (humanity)
Mother is such a good movie. It was hella disturbing but good at the same time.
I was sooooo confused the whole time, but towards the end I started picking up on little metaphor things like the “eating the flesh of the son”, but I didn’t fully understand it until I goggled an explanation lol
YES EXACTLY. This movie feels like a nightmare that I usually have, in this nightmares I'm always overwhelmed about something, and I'm always disoriented, like I don't know what to do all the time, and ppl are constantly mad at me, shaming me but usually the scenario is my previous schools. I'm always dreaming about teachers treating me like a child, being rlly pissed at me while I never fully understand what the fuck is going on. When I watched this movie I had the same feeling that I have when I wake up from this nightmares, pure confusion and terror
honestly having already seen this movie, REST IN PEACE
TRIN IS FEEDING US WITH CONTENT!!
As a person with emetophobia (fear of vomit) I super appreciate the trigger warning.
Also I love your videos you are so fantastic
i love you and how you made it normal not understand it all at first^^ it’s a really important message
