    what i loved with the puzzle box, is that it really reflects the theme of the movie. all the puzzles make it seem like a complicated whole, when a hammer in the hands of someone clever enough to disrupt get right to it. also, with the music box puzzle in the scene, where yo yo ma explains that "it's a melody that, if you layer it on top of itself, it creates a new song". that's exactly what the story structure of this film was, and that's so neat! we get the first hour following benoit, then we get the story layered on top of itself following helen that re-contextualizes what we *thought* we knew, creating a new understanding of the overall mystery.

    • @PristianoPenaldoSUIIII
      @PristianoPenaldoSUIIII Před rokem +125

      Another layer to this is that solving those puzzles is really more a test of cultural knowledge than actual tests of logic, deduction, or other attributes one might call genius. You have to be part of the wealthy's cultural "in-group" to recognise the solution. Not much more than rich people's version of a pub quiz on sports. It's why Helen is the disruptor, smashing through it instead of indulging the pretentious charade.
      It really fits a theme in this movie of how the wealthy delude themselves into thinking that they are geniuses, exceptional people who deserve their wealth when it often is all just a charade, really they just mistake niche class cultural signifiers and etiquette as demonstrations of their intelligence and value, rather than any actual skills, creativity or other exceptional abilities. They think they're geniuses because they can recall some phrase in Latin, or reference the name of some niche artist they heard about at the garden party, often without even actually appreciating the works of art and culture themselves.
      Miles in particular repeatedly gets metaphors and symbolism wrong including that of the glass onion, he even hangs his Rothko upside down. And in the end, his money and his collections don't change the fact that he's an unexceptional moron.

They describe it an endgame, when it's actually an opening! In other words, they recognise what it is, but they don't understand it. That theme is all over this film.
      Actually come to think of it, they don't even solve the puzzle on their own. They all help from the people around them (with the notable exception of Helen), and yet they're the ones that get to feel special and go on their little holidays while the people that helped them remain stuck in Covid lockdown. Those around them truly understand, do the work, but they the wealthy take the credit and reap the rewards.

      It’s kinda neat because the movie rewards you for getting it right (eventually), but, while trying to get you to give up on Miles as the murderer, also puts you into the mindset that the film criticizes: Our just-world belief/feeling that these ultra-rich dudes *must* be smart and have some merit to explain why they’re so successful and wealthy, when in reality, most just know how to use and abuse people to get to the top with general intelligence being optional. It really puts you in Beniot’s shoes when he gets frustrated that the answer was so obvious, yet he was led astray by someone who we inaccurately think would be smart was actually dumb af. 😅

    This is another film I’ve got to watch twice. The first time you watch it, it’s a bit confusing because you’re spending a lot of time trying to actually watch the film and figure out what’s going on but the second time, you have the time to notice little details and properly think about specific things and I kinda hate how it’s only now, when I’m reading through this comment section with all these really interesting takes, that I’m realising it! I’m also taking this as my sign to watch it again.
    Also, I love Benoit, he’d be such an interesting and funny person to know in real life and I love Daniel Craig for bringing him to life! 😄

  • @Soap_box

    This one is just so much more playful than the first one. Which I think is something that it absolutely excels at. The first one being more serious and this one just being SO bombastic and almost cartoonish. It's just such a fun movie. I hope the third one is a locked room mystery and the whole movie happens in like one place. Now that would be genius.

    I read an interesting theory somewhere; that's not actually the original Mona Lisa. Apparently it was painted on wood and not canvas. The theory goes that the French government wasn't about to rent out the most recognizable painting in the Western world to a guy who thinks "inbreathiate" is a word. So they just gave Miles a copy.

    • @themochi8329
      @themochi8329 Před rokem

      I’m pretty sure it was the real one because if you notice how it burns you can see the paint lift off of the wood it wouldn’t do that on canvas (take this with a grain of salt I believe I heard this from a Rian Johnson interview)

  • @yagadoobigidibobbibigabiga38

    When I was watching this, I was so impatient because I just wanted to get to the "Blanc shits on Miles for being a bad murderer and gets vengeance for Andi" part, but then with each twist and reveal of info in the flashback, it just made me equally excited to find out each new piece of info to understood the pre-murder mysteries as well as the actual murderer confrontation. This, as well as knives out, are those kinds of movies you have to watch at least twice, and it's more than enjoyable enough to watch it multiple times so that not everybody gets exhausted of it after a certain amount of viewings.
    Also, I love an agonizingly hard murder mystery to solve, but I think one of the biggest things glass onion does well is make up for the mystery being easy by misdirecting you and creating this flamboyant and dramatic twist that happens before everything at the beginning occurs. Having murder mysteries be super chronological is fine, but if you can succeed in messing with the timing of the murderous events and putting things out of order, then you don't even need to make the mystery difficult.

People said they new it was Ransom right away because he was the only one with a Samsung, Apple never lets their products be used by a villain in movies, so for this movie everyone has a Samsung phone. I loved the first one but my biggest problem with this one is very simple. Everything is just a little less interesting. I’m cool with the different pace and tone cuz it helps that stand out from the first. But I only ended up being interested in half the characters in the second one. The new setting is nice but not as interesting. I still think this is fucking brilliant writing and directing by Rian Johnson, it just didn’t feel as compelling. In the first the cinemaography had the colors pop and the wardrobe was better you get the point.

The first gives me a bit of The Mysterious Affair at Styles.
