"Why wasn't this up for any Oscars?"
Because the Academy is prejudiced against horror movies and snubs them every year.
But Parasite got a oscar?
@@janella9215 Sorry to ask but what's the difference between horror and thriller?
@@allywong9675
I think horror is usually scarier and more gorey than thriller,I think thriller has more of a mystery aspect to it?
@@allywong9675 It's a bit blurry and the two often are very close together and many movies are kinda both, though often one more than the other. If you ask me, the main goal of horror is to interact with the audience through the emotion of fear - if you are scared, unsettled, disturbed or disgusted, there are likely at least some horror elements in there. Thrillers on the other hand work with suspense and keep you on the edge of your seat as to what happens next. In short, in thrillers you want to know what comes next, in horror movies you dread what comes next.
But like I said, it's hard to make a clear cut distinction between the two and I wouldn't see my comment as the only interpretation.
@@allywong9675 very late to this but horror plays off fear, gore off disgust, thriller off suspense
I was wondering if Trin would notice how that one girl put her period blood in the guy's juice for the love spell. I gagged for a good ten minutes when it hit me.

Jerry Seinfeld/George Costanza: ...I think we should see other people. *insert bassline*
Pretty sure Pelle or the cult murdered her family... There's a flower crown at the crime scene and her family dying made her vulnerable ...
I kind of laugh when people are like "yeah the cult did awful things but theyre so kind to Dani, she basically has a new family" because it's clear they have zero experience or any idea in general how a cult works.

i watched little women and i was like i wanna see more of florence pugh’s movies so i watched midsommar with no idea what it was about and just putting it out there that IT and IT chapter two are literally in my top 5 favorite movies ever and i like horror movies but i was scared FOR WEEKS because of this movie
@@kayleepriest5006 IT is my favorite horror movie but it isnt really scary if you think about it
she did great in both! florence’s character in Little Women is my favourite
Local Simp it’s definitely more of a psychological horror rather than like a scary thriller but damn is it terrifying if you ponder on it for a while afterwards
It must have been so traumatic for Dani to see tons of people die after her family’s death cause she was still in grief, she must’ve thought it would be a relaxing trip that would help her maybe forget about it a bit but NAH!

And, during the dancing scene, what’s so strange is that I believe they all wanted Dani to win so she would feel this sense of pride and power which would lead to her believing she is more important. It would causes Dani than to subconsciously make the decision to go full in but it technically wasn’t really her. Basically they had put the idea in her head so she would think it was all her choice to stay and be a part of this fully. It’s a masterpiece and a disgusting movie in and of itself

He didn't really deserved what he got tho like goddd
more disgusting than the murder, ritualistic suicide, drugging and torture? Riiiiiiiight.
I love this movie and that there is so much discussion about it. Also, I love it that ALL the characters are morally ambiguous.
Hårgas are a cult and and they wanted Dani to be May Queen. They manipulated the events so that they could advance Christian and Dani to break up.
This is what cults do in real life - destroy old relationships in order to get people in.
This was made possible, because they are BOTH confused, both having their issues and lack of direction. But I'm amazed that people consider Dani innocent...hello, she took part in choosing a human sacrifice, when the morally / ethically choice would to refuse?? It's a horror movie but people are pretty messed up if they don't see that...
I don't think what Christian does can be called "gaslighting" - but he's still being quite spineless and manipulative, but more out of instinct rather than any plan.
Video about Gaslighting and Midsommar:
czcams.com/video/82_cZO-XvuU/video.html
Who is acting out of a plan, are the Hårgas. They want to break-up Dani and Christian. They create the environment where he feels like an outsider, and she feels like she belongs there.
This is a point I haven't seen been mentioned often: when they make Dani choose the final sacrifice- in what condition is Christian? Unable to SAY ANYTHING.
Dani is angry at him, justifiably, but at a man who the Hårgas have made paralyzed and unable to speak. And they want Dani to be freshly heartbroken, so he would pick Christian- because doing so, she is made accomplice to the killing. That's her TRUE FINAL RITE into the Hårgas. Not the fabricated theatre of May Queen crowning, but making her take active part in choosing sacrifices.
In that moment, she's liberated, but also insane. Is Christian a shitty boyfriend? Yes. Should they break-up? Yes. Should Dani choose a sacrifice? No.
She should have either picked the Hårga man or flat-out refuse to choose ANYONE as a sacrifice. People idolising Dani somehow seem to overlook this lol. "You go girl, be held and find a new home, take part in human sacrifices!"
Is a new side shown out of Dani in the end? Yes, but it's partly because she's gone insane. The original script literally describes the smile as insane, as liberation that the insane only can feel.
She has lost everything and she's made to choose a sacrifice- a sacrifice that she's also being manipulated into.
And she is now in the control of the Hårgas after that. She's taken part into their murders.
The suit made out of flowers is a perfect metaphor: they shower her with love, but wanting to imprison her. She's so overwhelmed with the flowers it's hard for her to move.
They welcome her "home", because as the only blond female of the group, she's the perfect baby making machine for their blood lines. A pregnant woman has more trouble to escape as well.
And this is why I love this movie even more than Hereditary: it's even more psychological, doesn't require supernatural aspects- and it's core strength is at what is IMPLIED even more than what is actually shown. That is powerful.
NEITHER Dani or Christian are innocent. Neither are they guilty. They are lost, confused pawns and neither find any true liberation in the end. One loses his life, one loses their soul, sanity and individuality. There's a chance she will adjust but that is left open.
I think it's a perfect ending to a horror movie. The character that has lost the most, has also become part of something truly sinister.
hibakusha0 I agree with everythinf you said
@@EmilyDickmesome it's all supposed to be symbolic lol. just a visual representation of what it's like to endure heartache. so basically nothing is and none of them are real, they all symbolise something that goes thru our mind when we are in pain. like.... this movie isn't saying drugging and killing someone is worse than cheating lol.

Whenever I suggest this movie, I ALWAYS tell the person that it's incredibly important to be in a good head space. I love movies like this (Hereditary and The Witch as well) because you need to pay attention and put the pieces together as you watch, and the endings are always incredible in one way or another. Honestly this is one of my absolute favorite horror movies, even though it took me a full week to recover after seeing it the first time.
I love Hereditary, The Witch, and Midsommar as well! What you described is such an accurate description of why I like them. Do you happen to have any recommendations for other movies in that vein?
I didn't like hereditary at all but I loved Midsommar, it was a great movie.
I agree that you need to be in a good head space, I wasn't when I first watched it and even though I was paying attention it ruined me and I had to take a couple breaks and watch it in stages.
This movie is so fascinating because it basically brainwashes you by using methods that actual cults use. It’s disturbing yes but fascinating nonetheless. I actually smiled with her at the end which is like so fucked up!

This movie is probably one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen.
in seriousness though, the film is so poignant. In the beginning, danni had no support, no love, no one to turn to who really meant it. And by the end, she does. She has a community. She’s surrounded by people that care about her and that’s why she’s smiling by the end. This emphasises the power of the cult. Midsommar was such a slow burn. Every moment was so subtle and gentle that you can’t look away. It built so much tension it made me SO anxious. This thing traumatised me. I couldn’t physically make myself look away. I like how you mentioned that the movie is light, yet somehow it's scarier that way. I think it has to do with the fact that since we associate the dark with spooks we tend to feel better/safe when it's light again. However when everything scary happens in broad daylight we don't have that mental safety net. Bad things can still happen when it's light out and you're in a field of flowers. There is no where you can go that will make you feel safe.

No. Toni Collette should have won an Oscar for best actor. This bint is terrible by comparison.
Butt Hz A: Toni Colette is a great Oscar but wasn’t even nominated for a movie (a movie she was in was nominated in one category but not her) this year so it doesn’t really matter, Florence was (only for little women sadly) B: If you mean for hereditary I agree, that was award winning but I’m not comparing her to another actress. C: she would technically be nominated for “best actress” not “best actor”
Florence Pugh is so underrated
So true! Florence deserved two nominations. One for best supporting actress (like she got) and another one for best leading actress. It would be amazing if the two black widows were nominated for the same categories.
Btw i was so angry when Laura won. I mean 2019 was Florence's year and Laura didn't do nothing special in Marriage Story. I said what i said.
Diasmc Coelho Adam driver and Scarlett Johansson really did amazing jobs for that movie, but I didn’t think Laura dern did a Oscar worthy job. Should’ve gone to Florence.
If you haven't noticed the man inviting everyone at the location said "Welcome" to everyone except he said "Welcome home" to Dani. Great foreshadowing 👏🏻
Also, I know it's not an original comment but it's a great point to be noticed 🤷🏻♀️
i can't even explain how weird this movie was for me when i watched it bro it's not even a horror movie it's just SO DISTURBING
I'm always so distracted by how pretty and healthy-looking your hair is
SAME THO me and my fried curly hair are jealous
MadPiper Same. I was like, “Damn, Trin, that’s shit’s on point!”🤣
How is it so shiny

I’ve never been as frustrated as when trin couldn’t figure out that the sister commuted murder suicide with the car monoxide
and yet she caught onto Pele right away? get you a girl who can do both
@@ari3899 but her sister wasn't NEAR her. Plus think about it, it's much easier to be suspicious of a stranger than accuse ur sibling of murder/suicide.
i thought it was a planted suicide at first. i thought someone made it look like a suicide rather than her just committing suicide and killing her parents too. i didn’t end up including those thoughts in the video though. sorry about that.
Trin Lovell it does seem like it Should be considering everything else in the movie. a lot of people said that part always feels like it doesn’t fit completely in the movie but I think it was just so Dani wouldn’t have a family so she would be more vulnerable to the cult 🤷🏼♀️
@@LovellTrin i just realized the original comment said "Trin" but I read Dani omg. Lol in ur defense it never outright says the sister did it but the context clues of Dani mentioning her sister's mental health & then her worrying over emails are the context clues.
Am I the only one who had this big as anxiety attack when they started crying with her bc to me it felt really scary and terrifying 😭😭
Just realized that the consistent baby crying in the room where they all sleep is foreshadowing of the group crying scene between Dani and the Harga women 🤯
“we do respect their incest taboo so we often need to invite outside people” BRUH AS SOON AS THEY SAID THIS I KNEW IT WAS OVER
ashley FRR
why did y’all make her watch this i wanna give her a hug and some chamomile tea she really went through it in this video
Exactly.
Fr I love horror and this movie was nearly too much for me
Chamomile tea? No. Mushroom tea.
girl she almost puked
but does it have drugs in it
The "dancing until you drop" thing comes from a legend about that village. A bard came to the village of Horga to play at their village dance. When the old folks of the village had gone to bed the tune changed and the young people started dancing like crazy. They all danced to death and the bard disapeared. He was in fact The Devil.
Oh, and the hung up in the ceiling with his organs out is a viking method of execution called "Carving a blood eagle". They believed that if the condemned could bear it without uttering a sound he would be welcome into Valhalla and his disgrace would be forgotten.
Trin trying not to gag at the end was honestly the mood
Trin clocked swedish dude immediately!!! 😂😂😂 He opened his mouth and she said nah

i wished i knew about *that* scene before i decided to watch the movie with my family
Same oh my god, I saw it in theaters with my whole family and died on the inside
Which THAT scene? Pretty much every scene could be described as THAT scene.
@@ailykat12 the long ass sex scene
It was both awkward and funny asf.
I watched it with my mom and we were just laughing.
"I wish we all respected the incest taboo"
me, thinking about half the batfam fandom shipping the siblings together because they arent 'technically' related: yeah, same
I literally broke down crying from distress when the sex ritual scene started... It was so deeply unsettling that it straight up scarred me and that scene is now burned somewhere into my brain😅

Hey, the main character got a fuckload of flowers. #soromantic
We love an authentic queen
the girl's sister committed suicide and killed her parents alongside herself. that was disturbing and selfish and upsetting as eff.
I honestly don’t think it was her, I think it was Pelle (idk if it’s spelled right) who killed them bc when they arrived at the Hårga they only hugged her, and another thing that made me skeptical was that beside her dead mother’s bed there was a flower crown on the girl’s picture. I personally think it was all planed out by Pelle. It’s almost obvious bc of the way he talked to her like it was bound to happen
When I first saw it it threw me so off cause I thought it was gonna be connected to the cult but then it ended up being so unrelated
Tamara Pecipajkovski nah. It was all random. Pelle planned nothing... he didn’t even know her, and she was not part of the trip to begin with.
Rodrigo Hernán Miño I kinda disagree with that, I think bringing his friends to Midsommar was his plan. Especially her for some reason. I feel like it was a subtle manipulation by him knowing that Dani’s bf wouldn’t let her be alone. Think like this, remember when Dani went to her bf’s and his friends place, and she talked with Pelle on the couch? His face expression was way off when he mentioned her dead family. When they arrived to Midsommar they said “welcome” to everyone but to Dani they said “welcome home”. I might sound way off but that’s just my theory hehe and there’s symbolism everywhere
@@visualsbyTP he didn't know her nor her sister. Also her sister's suicide was weirdly specific and it took a lot o screentime for something that really meant nothing
I am like... In love with how good Florence Pugh is at acting. IN the beginning scene you can hear her heave in her chest when she's crying.
I love that Trin was saying how the cult was the reason for Dani's sister doing her murder-suicide when that was just the setup for why Dani was so vulnerable to them.
the scene where she’s mourning after seeing her boyfriend having ya know, i thought it was beautiful in a sense that they’re not letting her mourn alone “if you’re suffering we’re suffering too and we’re here for you” shown in a dramatic way but still
Amber R. The issue with that is I feel like they’re recruiting her like converting her in their cult by doing that.
Amber R. Yeah, they do that all the time because "family"
Yeah also sure they’re “mourning” with her but they’re also literally the ones that cause her that pain by drugging her bf beyond any hope of actual consent and litteraly forcing him to empregnate the cult girl
Gave me absolute goosebumps. The contrast to her surroundings reacting to her grief in the beginning, and the actual validation of her feelings she experiences with her “sisters” is stunning. S t u n n i n g
It was not sympathy, but empathy. I liked that
As someone who literally grew up in Sweden and partook in all their holidays including Midsommar, I PROMISE YOU!!! This is not what midsommar is like. It’s actually really beautiful and fun
Thats what a cult member would say... SUS
Im curious how you feel about how the movie shows the holiday. Do u think that its wrong?
@@mackenziecarey9025 i'm a swede and no i dont think its "offensive" or anything but i for SURE think people have gotten the wrong picture about what midsommar is and what it stands for. yes we wear flower crowns and dance around a maypole lol but there have never been any rituals or that shit. so if anything its kinda sad that people will know midsommar as this movie and not what it actually is, i saw a comment here saying "this movie made me fear your culture" :((((
@@hannaeeliz ive had a quick reasearch of what its really about and it looks so beautiful 😍
@@mackenziecarey9025 amazing
This is one of my favorite movies. The cinematography is stunning and the acting is soo good. Every time I watch it though I feel nauseated and disturbed. The more you watch it, the more you see hidden or blatantly obvious foreshadowing, the obvious being the first scene and some of the more hidden being small pictures on walls or things hidden in trees. It is brilliant and deserved so much more recognition.
I honestly loved Midsommer. It was a great cinematic experience. Hereditary was also amazing but the thing that makes Midsommar scarier than Hereditary is definitely the fact that Midsommar solely relies on the dark and twisted human nature rather than Hereditary which dives into the supernatural. It gave me chills, but simply because it's not something that is impossible, but also because it's highly believable. Not everyone believes in the supernatural, but everyone can believe in the dark cultic nature of some people.
