Theorists, for the love of science I have eaten a Christmas tree TWICE and tried wearing bread loafs on my hands for gloves. There is almost NOTHING I won't do to learn. That includes using my dryer to try to cook my food. Today we are trying to answer the question of "Will it cook?" - dryer edition! Be sure to let me know in the comments what other hacks I should try to prove or debunk!

To be fair, it's overly discussed before. So if Matpat would even do that, he'll have put some spin into it. Like what food is safest to eat even if left on the floor.
Well, Mythbusters has already touched on this so it might just be professional courtesy.

Dry clothes in the dryer
Fun mildly related fact, in the UK its very common to have washing machine and occasionally a drier in the kitchen so the problem of having two separate rooms is already not a problem over here.

It should be mentioned that food can look and taste cooked sufficiently, while still being unsafe to eat. It really should have had a temperature probe of sorts, especially if the laundry can indeed affect the food.

YES
NO! DON'T do this! it's NOT safe. you can technically "cook" food in dishwashers and dryers and stuff, but the internal temperature doesn't get high enough long to make the food safe for consumption. it may LOOK cooked but IT IS NOT.
ann reardon did an experiment with this and watched the temp every moment it was being "cooked" with actual equipment and showed how it can give you food poisoning bc it is undercooked by quite a lot. even tho the temp inside the appliance may get to a certain point, the food doesn't.
it wouldn't surprise me if this next week is pretty rough for you two. you MIGHT squeak by ok, but you are rolling the dice with this one just like ppl not cooking food thoroughly in a regular way roll the dice.

You can just see how much fun MatPat is having with this episode.
You know,Food Theory is becoming more of a food experiment channel rather than theories, which I absolutely don’t mind cuz it’s fun that way
Well experiments are born from theories.
It starts as a theory/hypothesis, and then an experiment. That'd just the scientific method.
(You're welcome for bringing back awful science class memories)
And also MatPat is a total daddy.
Hypothesis -> Experiment -> Theory
It's largely because unlike Game or Film theories, he can actually test his crazy ideas when it comes to food.
A few things to add, as someone who has previously worked in the domestic appliance industry for 3 years:
The dryer you're using in the video is a vented dryer. These are the most inefficient dryers there are, so that would factor into your calculations about how much things cost. Condenser dryers are likely to be only slightly more efficient but release the same heat, whilst heat pump dryers are likely to require longer, but use half the electricity. Repeating this test with heat pump might make it win out, albeit with longer cooking times.
It also means that going into the future, this idea is likely to become harder and harder, as vented dryers are being phased out. Companies like Bosch (BSH group, so Bosch, Siemens and Neff) no longer produce any vented dryers, at least here in the UK, Beko group make *one* model, with the only other company making them being Whirlpool group (Hotpoint, Indesit, Whirlpool, all of which are pretty awful). So, repeating this test with a different type of dryer would be interesting to see how it compares, especially as in the future it's likely to be harder to buy yourself a vented dryer.
The important thing to note though is making sure food doesn't get into the condenser unit or heat pump unit, nor the heater itself. You *will* set your dryer on fire if you're not careful. It's not something to repeat at home. (This is actually why many Whirlpool group dryers were recalled; fluff would get into the heater and condenser, and thus set on fire. This is not something you want to play with further than some experiments.)
Finally, it would be interesting to grab one of those shoe rack accessories for the dryer. That would likely be fairly interesting to compare, seeming as it'd be right in the middle of the machine, receiving consistent air.
Wow, it's a good thing they tested outside in case it got on fire. Thanks for the insight.
I’m replying to boost ur comment up! I hope the team sees this !
Actually a good thing you said this. I was wondering if I could cook my meatballs in a dryer. But... well... I don't want a fire 😆
I come in expecting to see food cooking in a dryer, I come out learning about dryers. Thank you, stranger.
It definitely depends moreso on the type of dryer you have, but I just wouldn't risk it, seeming as it's likely you have a perfectly good cooker you can use!
The risk is if you have a spillage or rip in the bag, in which case then you risk food bits getting all over the inside of the machine, which is then potentially a hazard. The filters are there to stop things going through, sure, but I can guarantee that, at least in my experience, nobody cleans their filters properly, and so there's more risk of it going through.

With the "Vaccuum Smoothy" idea, that could actually work. The only downside I can see to it is that the smoothy might melt from all the heat vacuums tend to generate. I know that some blenders can literally make soup (including the heating part) so maybe baking cream of something soup in a vacuum could work?
Yea that one feels like it might be interesting to mess around with. Sous Vid in a hottub sounds like it wouldn't work as more than an anecdote (check temperature, maybe decide if putting it over a jet changes things) The vacuum's got potential though.
Perhaps part of the experiment would be trying to find the right sort of insulated container for it to prevent it from melting? :)

This episode makes me want to try this so much it seems like it’s really good 👍 surprisingly.
Out of complete curiosity, I'd love to know how effective this works on steaks of different types and thickness. That piece you guys used seemed very thin, and not to undermine what could possibly be, the biggest innovation in cooking/drying history, but I would love to know if it's as effective at cooking something like a prime rib, or a rib-eye.
Perhaps if u cut the space in half so 1 part is food and the other clothes
You might wanna take the bones out tho
to that question i think it becomes less about if it COOKS the steak and more about the degree to which the steak is cooked. Raw, rare, medium rare, medium, medium well, well done
what im wondering is how well this could do a calzone, although now thanks to you im thinking about rib meat in calzones
That was one of the best episodes of Food Theory you've ever done.
I'm sure that Steph's grandma will forgive her, just this once.
I highly disagree, unfortunately. The biggest focus should have been on the temperature and safety. He at no point actually measured the temp of the dryer or the food and absolutely should have, especially steak, to see if it was actually safe and it might not be. It's an incredibly unscientific experiment compared to their other videos.
Its just a fun video chill
@@wubzt3r i doubt they would have taken a bite if they didnt think it was somewhat safe. for example, they didnt try to take a bite out of the first steak they threw in there. and unless one of them was allergic to something they put in(which would be stupid), they most likely might have had a little bit of indigestion, if something went wrong. and they did mention the temperature of the dryer(125-140 F, 51-60 C). the steak they did take bites out of looked pre-cooked as well, unless you want to ignorantly overlook that fact....

You should also try wrapping the food with aluminum foil as it allows to keep that heat for longer periods. Maybe it could cook better that way? It's just a theory tho
It might also reflect the heat back out, keeping it cold
not just a theory, A FOOD THEORY
@@takealilpill347 the dryer isnt heating it by electromagnetic waves though, but when the food is hot, it releases the energy by a medium (air in this case), or infrared radiation, so it wouldn't be cold
you would need to be carefull though when you are pairing it with clothes because aluminum foils is far more leaky then plastic bags
You can't get them hotter than air around since heating is convective.

We need this video
Hahaha vacuum up the fruits it totally works
Yes! Stephanie, Matpat, do it!
This was great! I love Mat and Steph
i love food theory so much
Vacuum smoothie sounds interesting, very curious if the suction would cause issues of the pressures or the filters. Maybe testing different brands as well would be the most effective.
what about the dust?!👀
Use a new vacuum
I love how excited MattPatt is in this one, he's having way too much fun.
It’s just another bread gloves day
Let me make on thing clear! There is no such thing as having ‘too much fun’
@@emelgamergirl6783This.
If this was uploaded on April fools day it would've been the best bait and switch ever
I’m just trying to imagine this being my first day of work. Like what a start. I feel like this speaks worlds to who Ash is.
I've never gotten stronger Mythbusters vibes from a food theory episode and I love it
Yess I agree! I was thinking this too.
I mean, they did cook a lasagna in a washing machine
@Fpark9985 they cooked a fish in a dishwasher and a thanksgiving meal in a car so mostly the same idea..
This reminds me of that one time that I was told to put the steak in a bag on the radiator so it would thaw by dinnertime, only we all forgot about the steak until we smelled something cooking. The steak was pretty juicy and nearly cooked through, so we just finished it off in a pan and ate it. Next time, I'd add seasoning to the meat first, lol
Sounds like sous vide.
Dang you had a radiator? I haven’t seen one of those outside of a motel in my entire life
@@wolfetteplays8894 in england - where I live - literally every house has a radiator
Whoa! Now that's crazy accidental innovative 💡!
Ollie: Dad, why does my laundry smell like last night's leftovers-?
ok, heres one for style theory... can you dry your laundry in the oven?
“Dryers are full of hot air”
“Ovens are full of hot air”
I can’t tell whether or not matpat’s head is full of hot air.
I mean, steph kinda said he is full of hot air
This video was a... Mi-steak
Matpat's pure joy throughout this episode is amazing and I love it. I kinda wish that there were like,, a million episodes with this energy now
Food theory 100 years 💯 years Steph and matty
That vacuum smoothie idea from Steph sounds like an excellent idea
I heard you can cook stuff in the dishwasher and I would like to see how that compares to the dryer. I also wonder if the drying cycle on a dishwasher can reach higher temps.
I would also like to see the vacuum smoothie too.
