“The last thing that you wanna do is invest a lot of money into something you don’t know if you’ll like it”
What my dad is thinking when I ask for a flute
Great video! I own the Trevor James Cantabile with wooden lip plate, riser, and end cap. I love the warmer tone it gives me. I highly recommend it.
I love their Cantabiles! The wooden lip plate etc. gives it such an awesome sound!
The Budget Knitter I’ve tried that headjoint and I love how warm the sound is with that headjoint.
Excelente! Que bueno encontrar este tipo de vídeos para poder orientarse y aprender la mejor forma de escoger tu instrumento.
Muchas gracias ! 😊
De nada. Estoy feliz que podia ayudar
Thanks for sharing to us! So usefull! Have a nice day!! From Chile...
Just ran across this, and couldn't resist throwing in my 2 cents' worth. I started college back in the dark ages as a flute major but realized I simply didn't have the fire in the belly to pursue a professional career. Having said that... it was during that first year of college that I realized I needed to upgrade from the Bundy nickel-plated student flute my parents bought from a neighbor for $50. My flute teacher at college recommended an Armstrong Heritage flute, which was Armstrong's top of the line. And for some reason (which I have now forgotten) he recommended a C foot rather than a B. Well, the price of a brand-new C foot Heritage in 1974 was $900, which was way outside my starving student budget.
Around that time, my mother went to her parents' home in another city to take care of her mother after a surgery. While there, she checked around the music stores to see what they had. I told her what my teacher had recommended, and then didn't hear anything more on the subject. Until the day she came home. I picked her up at the airport, and I'm not sure what I saw first... her or the flute case sticking out of her tote bag. Amazingly, she had found a used Heritage C foot flute for $550. Better yet, my grandmother had offered to pay half!
I wrote to the Armstrong factory with the serial number, and they wrote back to tell me that flute had been manufactured in October of 1970. So it is now 50 years old, and I am still playing it. It's very responsive; what one flutist friend of mine would call a "honker."
And a few years ago I did buy a flute at Amazon--one of the plastic Nuvo flutes. It cost around $200. It's a great goofing-off flute. I can take it places where I would be hesitant to take my good flute, such as the beach or on a hike. If I accidentally drop it in the creek, it won't be harmed, as it is waterproof. It has an amazingly good sound, considering it's basically a glorified piece of PVC pipe. It's also very lightweight, and a buyer can choose a curved head joint, so that option and the low price make it a viable alternative for a kid's first flute. And who could resist the bright colors? (This inner child couldn't.)
I play on a Pearl 505 with a B-foot and split E from FCNY! I’m looking to purchase a piccolo this summer as well
That's so awesome! I have this video about piccolos if it would be helpful: czcams.com/video/GrrjSbqLruo/video.html
Best of luck with your piccolo shopping!
Tbh I thought pearls are trash
I got a great student flute on Amazon under $200. No problems, and my local music did a tune up for me after a few months of playing. They were impressed with it. So parents who don't want to spend hundreds of dollars, look into Amazon and eBay. I did and found a great flute.
I recommend renting a flute if you are just starting and then you can level up to buying your own flute if you stick to playing the flute.
Depending on your finances that can be best :) Depends - sometimes, you end up spending more renting in the long run then just buying an instrument outright but I understand that that also means that you have to have the cash upfront which is not always possible. Another option too is rent to own (did that with one of my saxophones in High School!)
I rented a Yamaha when I started in elementary school. I paid $100 for my first flute, an Aria, which was around the 1978. It served me well for many years. Eventually I bought a Pearl PH-6J with open holes and a B foot, my current flute, which was amazingly easy to play compared to my first. This was well o er 20 years ago
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing your story with me!
Would love to see a video on good flute cases. Not just basic hard cases, but also ones with shoulder straps and what not. 🙂
What a great idea! I'll have to do one at some point soon!
Gina Luciani Thanks!
I will be getting the Di Zhao 200:)
SO... i just bought the pearl quantz 525. I know I'm going to like it already, but I'm still nervous. another big boy purchase lol. But I live on Guam so hopefully it comes in before a wedding i need to play for.
Awesome! All of these flutes are great options!
Thanks Kiara!
Yes I was considering buying me a upgrade flute the one I have Is a yahmaha year 1887 but the model is 285s2 its been over I know 20 years I've been playing since middle school and high school so I took a long break and I do mean a long break im trying to find me a upgrade flute for church I have open holes for me thank Gina 😊
I'mma start with the the lowest price flute, the Yamaha 221 which is 629 dollars.. yeah.. I'm sticking to guitar. That's not budget 😂😂 whyyyyyy
Look for some lightly used flutes online :) There’s always plenty.
absolute mood, even a budget guitar from a known brand starts from 200 bucks or even less.
Talking about stuff like Ibanez GRG121DX, Epiphone SG special VE or even the Yamaha Pacifica and Squier starter packs
In the flute world $629 is nothing
*laughs in cellist*
Tnx mam gin, i go for yamaha 222😊
@@khawlaaa4986 yah i just bought also so nice😄
It socoul😙
What are the pieces that you played in this video? They are very pretty and the flutes sound awesome!!!
Hey Gina, getting ready to make the purchase on the pearl 525. It has the specs I’m looking for and has a nice sound without breaking my pocket. One thing you didn’t mention is how the action was on the key pad. Was it easy light?
Kinda an old vid but I'm between the pearl 525 and the Yamaha 222. Which is the best out of those 2? And would you recommend anything else for an intermediate-professional flute player? Thanks
Hi Gina, I’ve had a student flute for years now, wanting to advance, but on a budget.
I was so happy to see this video! I had one question though, do you know if the Flute Center does any kind of a payment plan? Such as monthly payments? I would be grateful for any help you can give me.
They do! Here's the link to their site where they talk about payment plans: www.flutes4sale.com/pages/sales-policies
Would you recommend the last two flutes you played on (pearl 525 & Trevor James with the additional wooden crown ) for someone who’s in their last years of high school going into university?
You know, that really just depends on your level and playing style. Both were great flutes, so I'd suggest doing a trial with The Flute Center of New York and seeing which you like best! Let me know if I can help you with anything else :)
Does the wooden crown come with the Trevor James Privilege flutes already? Or is there an option to include it?
Hi, can anyone please tell me what is that piece that Gina uses to demonstrate the flutes with? It's a haunting melody!
Ok, it's the Fantasie by Georges Hues..
Hi Gina ,Could you pls may I know that whether it is available a easy payment scheme to purchase a good flute on a Visa card. Tks
Here In The Php I Got A Pre Owned(2nd Hand) YAMAHA YFL 23 For Just $150 Totally Overhauled🙂It Took Me a While To Save Some Money For It And It Was Worth The Wait🙂👍Im A 2 month old flute player🙂I could not afford a Expensive flute Cause I Have no money for It But I Suggest You Should Find A Muscian And Ask Him How You Could Have A Flute For The Money You Have🙂150
THE YAMAHA IS A GOOD ONE
B.CRAMPON AND GEMEINHARDT
Hope you find this helpful Dont buy too expensive stuff ok Remember Music Is Played From The Heart Not From The Instrument Itself❤❤❤❤
hI, GREAT post! Trying to upgrade to an all-sterling flute but want to keep closed-holes, how about the Yamaha 422? Available to try?

jean paul vs yamaha's flute ?
Great video. I'm semi-pro jazz flute player, play through amp (to be able to be heard over trumpets, etc.)-- I've had Artley solid silver (head and barrel) open-hole, b-foot key that I've been playing since I was a student 40 years ago (flute was made in 1977). The flute sounds good of course (I saw an expert play a 200 dollar flute compared to her 20,000 flute, and she was surprised that difference, although there, wasn't greater). Two questions: 1) what do you imagine I would get from one of the under $1000 flutes you played in the video that I might not be getting now from my 40 year old student flute. Please be specific and honest. and 2). The Yamana 382 or the Di Zhao 500 series flutes are only a few hundred dollars over 1000. Are these now significantly better than the under 1000 flutes that you tested?
It's a bit crazy, and capital driven, all the various price points covered--- but once you're talking open-hole, off-set g, b foot joint, silver head (maybe or not silver body), what do these great variations in price really mean in terms of quality. Yes, it's personal to some degree, but please expand on your thoughts about the flutes I mentioned. Many thanks for all your great flute work and your help. Charlie
One thing to consider (I was recently looking at getting an old Artley) is that newer flutes have smoother, faster, quieter mechanisms. Artleys have a reputation with techs to be difficult to maintain and repair. Trevor James flutes are designed for the "intermediate" player, and repair techs love them because they're well built. New flutes can also be more responsive to dynamics and less tiring to play over all.
I play bassoon.
Ive been out of band for 15 years but occasionally play my flute I've had since beginner band. I have an armstrong 104, should i buy a new flute, and if so should i look at ones like in this video or just other beginner ones, or should i just pay for a full maintenance overall?
Did you make a decision? I love my 30 year old Armstrong 80B but some of the features on the new flutes are really nice. And the mechanisms are better. I hope to upgrade soon
@@TracyKMainwaring I took it for cleaning and to fix it. Turned out for me, besides a bent wire, it was in perfect working order. So only had to pay for cleaning and they straightened wire.
What did you start out with?
Am I allowed to take the plugs out on a flute during a flute center of New York flute trial?
What do you think of the Jean Paul flute? They only have one, and it’s like 200 dollars..
Does this open hole flute have cover in the mean time that you’re still not use to the open hole?
Yes! They come with plastic plugs until you're ready to take them out :)
What about the Jean Paul?
Do you know where i could buy flute case covers?
Probably at the Woodwind & Brasswind (www.wwbw.com).
Hello Gina, I have just met up with my future Flute Instructor here in Music School, and I have informed her, of my inability to purchase a flute at this moment. I came to this video in search of some ideas of quality flutes that would work for me. She allowed me to try a studio owned Bundy flute (That was bought b4 my school became a University) and she has a Brand New Azumi AZ3 that one of her Majoring students has dibs on. I was just wondering if I could get some more of your thoughts on these last three flutes, and how well you think they would function. I am searching for a Quality budget flute that will fit comfortably about halfway between the prices of both of the flutes mentioned above, and a quality beginner level flute that can handle advanced tasks in music school
Also I am looking to end up on an Azumi AZ1, 2 or 3 for a long term flute and was wondering how you feel the Trevor James Privilege model (I believe the last flute), would compare to the Azumi and if it would be a good starter instrument to set me up for a later on Azumi intermediate model?
I honestly really love both the Azumis and the Trevor James. I'd suggest doing a trial from The Flute Center of New York (which is free and extended time with my code!) and see which one you like best. Every player is different and is going to prefer something different so I don't want to say which one to get if that makes sense. Let me know if you have any other questions! Best of luck finding your flute!
@@GinaLuciani Thank you Gina I actually decided considered trying the Di Zhao 300, but I kind of got discouraged when I heard that it was labeled a beginner flute. Would you consider it along with the other flutes in this video review a "quality enough" beginner level flute that can handle advanced tasks in music school, Like if one of your students had this model while they're around the ability of a first year music school student? Would you suggest an upgrade or would it be fine for more than two years of school?

So before you buy the flute, you can have free trials? Or do you have to just buy it?
They'll send you the flutes to try out before you buy them :) Just make sure you're actually serious about purchasing a flute ;)
The Yamaha 222 is over $1,000
what about an Amazon flute worth $1000?? Does it have good quality?
Hah nope. I ordered the Mendini flute off of Amazon, and the foot joint keeps falling off. It also has multiple leaks, and the plating rubbing off on my hands [I know, weird xD]
It also doesnt sound all that good. Its decent, but you need to use extra effort to make a good sound.
Also, sorry for the late responses..
hahaha Hatcher fake
My dad almost bought a flute from amazon
My kid hates lacrosse
Student flutes are meant to be sturdier than professional pure silver/gold/etc.
Under 100€?
I unfortunately don't know of any quality flutes that I'd recommend at that range :(
Why is this a budget?! One flute is $25 less than $1000
why the yamaha now $1000 🥺
inflation :( This video is quite a few years old now so unfortunately prices have changed
This is an untrue advert..
This is an informational video. Please let me know what think is untrue about it so I can clear anything up for you.
Wait u call that yamaha "cheap?"
Sorry, I should have phrased it differently. Compared to a $40k+ flute, it is relatively inexpensive. I totally understand that this is still a large some of money to come up with
@@GinaLuciani thank you i am looking to buy an axiom flute
My child wants to play the flute... 9 years old, and I think she should use the Trevor James 10 X... can't afford it... Payment plans? 😡😡
Don't get a 9 year old a $650 Trevor James unless you are ok throwing away $650. I've been through band along with my 2 daughters in high school and middle school. NO INSTRUMENT SURVIVES! all of these "beginner" flutes are for adult beginners. Buy something in the $300 range because it WILL be dented, smacked, lost, stolen and/or destroyed before they finish high school.
Alright Itziar enough with those questions SHE IS IRRESPONSIBLE THE NUVO FLUTE THINGY IS CHEAP
THATS A WASTE OF THE FLIPPING SALARY OF 2K!!!!
Are you playing with lipstick D:
Oops, Wrong video. I thought I said under $100.😒
