BMW INPA Engine Diagnostics EXPLAINED!

  • Diagnostics on Meeknet: www.meeknet.co...
    INPA Interface: amzn.to/2Y5mBQg
    Timm's store: www.amazon.co....
    This video goes through how to use INPA to diagnose engine problems on the 6-Series, and in particular the N62 V8 engine, but these routines are suitable for all BMW engines right from the 3 cylinder to the V12. It's great fun, and you can't do much harm. In particular I go through Adaptations - and the dreaded error adaptations at limits.
    We spend a bit of time explaining Adaptations and what the values mean. The strange terms such as Lambda Integrator, Total Air Consumption HLM, and the difference between Additive and Multiplicative Adaptations - all explained here.
    OBDII to 19-pin adaptor: amzn.to/33CFRWN
    INPA: amzn.to/33D2NoT
    Further information can be found here: www.meeknet.co....
    Diagnostics can seem daunting to start with, so many pages of information and things to fiddle with. Most of us just check the error codes and leave it at that. Fortunately, there are three pages on INPA that gives us a window into the engine that is easy to understand.
    Although this routine shows diagnostics on the M62 V8 engine, the INPA pages used here are useful for all BMW engines. These three pages, Analog 1, 2 and Smoothness gives an insight into the condition of the engine and any impending problems.
    We also look at Adaptations and how the values can enable us to get the best performance and engine economy.

    This was the best video explaining INPA, with extensive context for every function covered, pure gold. Most clips on yt are sub-par made my people who don't know what they are doing or are unable to explain properly. A series covering other aspects of BMW software coding/programming with this level of detail would be brilliant

    Hi Tim, In my N62B48 both Additive adaptation on bank1 and bank2 values are positive (about +1 sometimes lower) Is it correct ? Multipilcative adaptation values are also 0,94-0,97. My problem: When car is at a standstill and I press the gas pedal hard on a hot engine, can be heard for a moment sound like (subaru) in muffler - some missfires I think.. but if I press the gas more slowly, everything is OK. Everything is also OK when I turn off valvetronic, e.g. by disconnecting the exhaust camshaft sensor. On the cylinder head bank 2 I replaced the intermediate rocker arms with new ones and 8 HVA regulators (I had a constant error: cylinder 7 misfire). There is currently no error in DME. Thank you for your suggestion

    Great video Tim, wish I'd have had it last year when I was fixing up my 7series 745i (N62). It hadnt run since 2014 so 6 years in a garage with no servicing. It was missfiring on 4 of 8 cylinders. Eventually after playing with various odb readers I was able to figure out the MAF was very dead reading a value of 599 constantly. That got me closer, then their was a couple of huge vacuum leaks in a few pipes, the vacuum stabiliser things on top of the heads had huge holes in them too. I also had a few dead coils and decided to replace all of those and the sparks. Lots of oil around the sparks so a rocker cover gasket swap is on the cards for future. Ever done one? I hear vanos can be a pain to remove. I also had a dead valve that recirculates the gasses from the fuel tank, that one took ages to figure out and was putting the light on the dash which was really frustrating and only figured it out once I got to grips with inpa although I've never managed to get it to read errors in English. Once I had the engine running it was the turn of the other errors and mostly the airbags, although I was able to reset them.

    Sorry to bring up an old video, I was watching trying to diagnose an intemittent 02 sensor code. It randomly, becoming more common infact pretty much when it warms up it starts to misfire and throws a 2C45 code. The code is for pre cat 02 sensor, I will replace it, but i was watching some live Inpa diagnostics and my air mass was varying from about 12 to 20 kg/h constantly. Is it worth replacing the MAF sensor as well ? or should i just give the wiring a going over

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  Před 10 měsíci

      O2 sensor warnings are an indication that the fuel/air mixture is wrong - not the sensor itself. If the MAF is showing a huge range of readings then yes, it should be replaced - OEM BMW only!

    Paint shop left my car on too long and killed the battery. I believe my EWS is out of sync and am having codes for starter relay and intermittent transmitter. I’m trying to connect to my EWS module to reset it but for some reason will not connect. I have the K+DCAN cable with a switch on it and it won’t connect for whatever reason. I go to the EWS section and it automatically says it can’t read. 2002 E39 M5. Do you have a website you use to read the lengthy codes?

  • @placeholdername3206
    @placeholdername3206 Před 2 lety +1

    I'm trying to get into INPA. It's really the only option if you're on some of the old Bosch Motronic 3.1 stuff. Like the early M50's and M60's without VANOS etc. Those ODB cables are no good for the old engines. You need a connector for the 20 pin plug in the engine bay, with serial plug in the other end. Then you need a laptop with an actual serial port and bloody windows xp. Serial ports stopped being on regular laptops around 2007.

I replaced the MAF but INPA shows a Air Mass of 8.5 in idle. Is this normal? Because it should be around 22 and 25 right? Could something else be the problem besides the MAF

Bank 1 values are perfect, 67.80 / 126.20 respectively Both in the green! Yet, Bank 2 Output starts in the green (68.00, though adaptation input bank 2 is well low @ 67.90. So (B1 67.80 output = green / 126.20 input = green), and (B2 Output 68.00 = green / 67.90 input = red). Have you a suggestion why? All the CPS have been changed or new, solenoids are new. Just to say I made a comment in your other INPA video about my slightly rough idle and I think my values on the page 'analog value 3' the O2-sensor Add Banks 1 & 2 are -1.70 and -2.30 which suggests a lean adaptation ? , unlike yours which are much closer to -0.3 & -0.5.

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  Před 3 lety

      It could possibly be MAF - but your values show the mixture is too rich by a small amount - and that could be misfires - possibly causing the rough idle.

      It sounds as if the coil return loom has been trapped - check your work again!

      @@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation thanks Timm, what do you mean coil return loom trapped? I am desperate to sort this. Whilst replacing the valve cover gaskets I had the control box cover off. Overnight though the bonnet was down, water got in. I took out the VVT and DME and dried them out hoping they would be OK. That is when I had the melting coils. Someone told me I have a damaged IVM, so replaced that. Also replaced all the coils. Cleared all the error codes. Tried cranking and now my new coils are melting. It appears to be the same 3 as before. I believe each coil has a 12V +, neg and a trigger signal. If I have a trapped loom does this mean something is shorting to ground? Your help would be appreciated. I am on a couple of Facebook forums and no one can help. With the background detailed, could this be a damaged VVT or DME? All the best, Mick

    Only thing that is still original are the coils and starter motor. Vehicle has 150k km
    Any help would be appreciated.

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  Před 3 lety

      Yes, that is most likely loss of fuel pressure when the engine is off. It should maintain a pressure of around 2,5 Bar indefinitely. The pressure is maintained between the Fuel Pressure Regulator and the fuel pump which has a one-way valve built into it. Some owners fit a one-way valve in the fuel line because of the cost of pump replacement.

    Hi Timm, I notice you get around 22 kg/hr on your MAF at idle. My X5 4.8is with N62 motor is getting about 29 kg/hr at idle, and INPA is saying that is out of range. That's with the AC running. I should try again without the AC running, but does that sound high to you?
