It is the story of George Pelawa. An up and coming hockey player who died in a car crash. Tom's vocals do indeed personify the emotional pain felt by his loved ones.
It is such a great song with such a sad story. Shows the pride in having your child make it to the NHL. Great reaction.
Thanks Harri and Adam. Great choice. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Holy smoke! This song has given me a chill up my spine for what, 40 years? And I never knew it was taken from a real person's story. Thank you, I will look up George's story. He is the inspiration for a truly great Canadian piece of music. I've heard the ice crack many times in my youth, thus the reason for the chills. Once again, tks for George's story. I'm from a 'hockey family'. xx
Tom Cochrane's song "Big League" was rumoured to be about Pelawa. Cochrane says the lyrics are based on a true story, but that it is about another player. While the song is fictional, Cochrane has said it was inspired by a custodian who approached him before a show at a rink and requested Cochrane play his son's favourite song, "Boy Inside the Man" from the band's 1986 self-titled album. He noticed the man was using the past tense, and as the conversation continued, Cochrane understood that the father's son had died.
Vancouver Canucks hockey team had a young defenceman. Luc Bourdon. He was killed in a motorcycle accident. To start the season the team honoured him, and Tom played this song prior to puck drop. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.
🇨🇦 Humboldt Strong !
By the way, if you've ever been near a frozen lake on a very, very cold night, the ice cracks. It's loud and so haunting. And after hearing this song, it just rips your heart out.
You absolutely nailed this song Harri. Mad respect on your capabilities.
Tom Cochrane is right up there in Canada with Bryan Adams, well respected. Other hits are Lunatic Fringe with his band Red Rider and as a solo act he has : "Life Is A Highway", "Boy Inside The Man". Great singer & songwriter.
Personally I think Tom's a better writer than Bryan though i do love both.
My favorite Cochrane song will always be "I wish you well"
I don’t think there is a bad Tom Cochran’s song
Light in the Tunnel/Human Race... nothing else to say.
My favourite Tom Cochrane song is Avenue A!
Yes, its the distinctive sound of skate blades on the ice. It gives more Canadians chills. I think the song is from the Father's perspective. And he's haunted by that sound, and reminded of his son.
If you’re appreciating Tom Cochran, I humbly suggest “Lunatic Fringe” with Tom’s former band Red Ryder. ✌️❤️🇨🇦
But if you do a search, spell it correctly, "Red Rider". DOH
Great Canadian artist 🇨🇦
Red Ryder is his original band
Red Rider
From Lynn Lake Manitoba
White Hot is another good one by Red Rider.
A truly great song for sure. ✌️
Harri...this just proves your the best reactor out there...I can't think of another reactor who would react to this. You react to so many great artists that others don't....Keep going man.
Hello there. This Canadian 🇨🇦 (me) loves Tom - he’s one of my most favourite Canadian artists ever. This song is very heartbreaking. It’s catches you off guard, if you’re not listening to the lyrics. For years, I thought it was just a happy go lucky song, a man singing about his son. Boy, was I wrong. 😮 Thx Harri.
"Ice meets metal". He is referring to the sound of ice hockey skates when the player digs his blades into the ice to propel him/her self forward, backward or in any direction on the ice . Figure skaters and ice dancers make the same sound with the skates they wear. It has a distinct sound. I grew up in Northern Ontario learning how to skate and play hockey on outdoor rinks when I was a boy. A hockey player NEVER forgets THAT sound.....
Hi Harry Im a big fan of Tom Cochrane and have seen him many times live.
He once explained that he met the young mans father who explained this to him, from there he wrote this song.
Tom has a amazing song list and worth your time to explore his hits. A great Canadian singer songwriter. If you should ever get a opportunity to catch him live ..do it!!
The woman who used to cut my hair... a single mom... Nice lady... Her son was a hockey player, drafted by the New York Rangers... A D-man, if memory serves... Word is, his Junior A coach called him, 'a diamond in the rough'... It was many years ago (late seventies, maybe?)... He was 18, same age as the kid in this song... He told his mom, when he made the NHL, he was going to buy her diamonds & furs... He was slated to attend his first NHL training camp at summer's end, but he never did... He & some friends were headed north to a cottage, for the weekend... There was a car crash... one fatality, him... Again, if memory serves, his name was Jim McGeachie... not too sure about the spelling...
thanks for playing so much canadian content.
You'd like his song 'Boy Inside the Man'
If you like Tom try the original "Life is a highway"
Yes!
Haven’t heard that since this morning….and yesterday..car radio
His weakest song and biggest song.
This is a great one Adam! "Lunatic Fringe" is one of my favorites of all time! Thanks a bunch and a big thanks to Harri for being the Best Dude!
Great song by Tom, and before he made "the big league" he use to play at the Piccadilly Tube, or "The Tube" in Toronto. It was at Yonge and Dundas and downstairs. The bar looked like a Tube station inside.
Thanks Harri. I was thinking about the tragic death and injury of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. Remembered this song and loved the groove. As always, great reaction.
Bittersweet memories Adam! Thanks🥲💫🎶🎸
❤️🏒🥅💔
He sang an acoustic version and dedicated it to the Broncos
@@MormorMb I watched that. It was too sad to react to.
A song about hockey, can't get more Canadian. 😊
I've seen Tom Cochrane and I wasn't aware of how good he and his band are!! peace and love from Canada
It is an awesome song!!!!! Listen to again when Tom sang it on late night sports after that tragic bus crash that claimed 16 Club members from the junior hockey team Humboldt Broncos . They were travelling by bus to a playoff game in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Tom reworded his song On live tv for the team. 😞. “We Are All Humboldt Broncos”
Tom is a legend! He had a band Red Rider with the big hit “Lunatic Fringe” back in the 1980’s then went solo. He had the smash hit “Life His A Highway”. He released a few years back an acoustic album of both Red Rider and his solo music, Songs of A Circling Spirit. It is a must have album! Songs like “I Wish You Well”, “Sinking Like A Sunset”, “White Horse”, “Washed Away”, “Crack the Sky (Breakaway)”, “All the Kings Men”, “Diamonds”, and many more.

What an amazing range of music you react to, Harri, and with great musical and emotional intelligence. Even just your last 20 reactions are so wide and varied. From Hermans Hermirs, a favourite in my U.K. childhood, to this superb song, probably a Canadian classic, that I've never heard before. All musch appreciated. And yes, the capturing in one song of the varied aspects of grief is superbly done: there's distress here, and anger, mixed with a calmer acceptance, and above all, an insistence to tell the story of this gifted young man. If I'd heard this song once on the radio I wouldn't have picked up all that, but listening once with you helps us find so much more. The mark of a great reactor!
Tom Cochrane is a real diamond in the Canadian rough ... listen to his song "Washed Away" for a real treat
Seems like the best songs written has a sad massage or that of the broken-hearted sound to them, a very sad, sad happening, and this is the first time I've have ever heard this song, and I liked it! Tom Cochrane has always had that touch of writing special songs. I like how you introduce songs to us all! I love your channel Harri, great stuff! KUTOS to ya. PS, REST IN PEACE-GEORGE PALER, and my heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. Signed, Greg the Egg.
There was another terrible hockey tragedy in the praires. Truck driver slammed into a whole bus load of hockey players and coaches etc. 15 or more killed. Newly licenced truck driver on a praire with no trees, nothing blocking his view but he still killed so many people. Cannot remember exact yearbutwitin last 15 years.
There were trees. Not blocking the view that much. I know the intersection. Been through there several times, before and after the crash.
Of course, this song came out decades before the crash. The crash was April, 2018.
For the movie buffs who watched the Baseball flick "The Final Season" they used a clip in one of the action scenes.
This was a huge hit in Canada in 1988. I've been a fan of TC since his Red Rider days. My fav song is "Paper Tigers". Check it out.
In 2018 there was a terrible crash involving a semi and a bus full ( 29 people ) with the players of the Humboldt, Broncos Junior Hockey team. 16 people were killed and 13 injured. The semi was at fault, as it struck the bus at a hwy. intersection.
A few people mentioned the Humboldt tragedy, which occurred in 2018, after this song was released. It was so eerily similar to this song, except it was a bus with a young hockey team that was hit by a truck. Sixteen kids dead, thirteen injured and the whole country mourned 🇨🇦 😭🇨🇦. Tom Cochrane rewrote the lyrics ("riding to immortality") and released an acoustic version of the song, donating the proceeds to the Humboldt Strong Community Foundation.
You need to understand what hockey means here in Canada - it's like football in the UK, but maybe more. Especially in small towns, places like Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Tom captured that so poignantly this song.
Not 6 kids killed, sixteen dead and 13 others injured !
@@Royal_BLT wow, thanks for noticing. Typo corrected!
Tom (as Red Rider) had a earlier song, White Hot, worth a listen.
Never heard of before...good music, great guitar sound...makes me think of John "Cougar" Mellencamp.
have you listened to red rider-lunatic fringe, tom cochrane was in that band
@@chadwellington2524 No, never...but I will, thank you !
When he says you never know when you will check out that means when you die so sounds like he died in the crash. I don't know if it was a true story or not.
Life is a highway and Lunatic Fringe when he was with Red Rider. Cheers
Hitting a truck head on at 70 isn't survivable, but yes, the never can tell when you might check-out line confirms what we all could have safely assumed was intended by the details of the crash.
It's based on a true story. He met a custodian at an Ice Rink, who told him his son loved one of his songs. Tom asked if he was going to the concert because they were going to play that song. That's when the custodian said his son was dead.
Hit Tom like a ton of bricks, and he knew right then he'd write a song about it. But he never indicated how the son died or if he really was a phenom destined for the Big Leagues. He only knew the kid played and loved Hockey and got taken out before his time.
"ice meets metal" is the skate blade hitting the ice. I grew in Canada and know this song like the back of my hand. I think his boy was killed myself.
The sound of "ice meets metal" is the sound of the skate blades on the ice (rink), it's very distinct.
Being Canadian same as Tom.i believe it may have been the story of future star George Pelawa who passed away in an accident just b4 his career
It wasn't about George Pelawa
Very emotional song….many Canadians can appreciate this song…love the drumming in this song….ice meets metal, skates hitting the ice, on out door ice it makes a very particular sound….another Canadian tragedy parents of the Humboldt tragedy will be able to relate to😥
Also check out, Good times, Avenue A and Sinking like a Sunset!
Hello Harri! Powerful song played in a powerful way, a favorite of a lot of us father’s.
I have found myself tuning into your channel with increased regularity! You seem to be an intelligent and thoughtful man. You're genuinely inquisitive! You are a rare character. Let it shine. So, so far you have been discovering Canadian artists. Check out new Orleans is sinking
LIFE IS A HIGHWAY is my favorite from Tom - but the Rascal Flats cover made it famous.
Light at end of tunnel/ Human race by Red rider or lunatic fringe or even napoleon sheds his skin are amazing dude....check them out
#4 ORR! This is the Canadian dream ... it's not about money.
This is 🇨🇦 in a song honestly
Every time I hear "you can hear the ice crack", I get a chill up my spine. It's part of growing up Canadian. Or rather, was.
The big league in heaven.
My mistake Harri, I assumed it was about the Humboldt crash which was a separate tragedy, and this was my first time hearing the song.
Ice meets metal.... skate blades on ice
Look up the Humboldt broncos bus crash, Tom dedicated a special version of this song to them
Tom Cochrane re-recorded this song as a tribute to the Humboldt Broncos tragedy in 2018, where 16 people (players and coaches) were killed. RIP
This song took even a more dramatic meaning in a provincial road in Saskatchewan when a bus load of junior hockey players was hit by a semi at an intersection and they lost 16 young lives trying to get to the playoff game out of town . Never forget the Humbolt Broncos . Rest In Peace 😢. Tom recorded it on stage shortly after this tragic accident.
ice meets metal - meanings the sound of a skate digging into the ice.
Lake Mclean is 45 Mins from our house
He hit a truck doing 70 that was in the wrong lane, AKA head on collision. It was over instantly.
No idea how the guy doing the lyrics messed up the line the first time, but the real lyrics are, "you never can tell what might come down, you never can tell when you might check out", not "You never can tell how much ya got". That would have helped solidify for you that he was dead.
The ice meets metal is just a reference to the sound skates make on ice, a reference to the haunting memories of his lost son.
Also, check out this acoustic version he performed in tribute of the Humboldt Broncos Saskatchewan junior hockey team bus crash, which was struck by a semi truck, and killed 16 and injured 13 on the bus. The semi driver ran a stop flashing red sign (light) and barrelled through the bus. The crash happened on April 6, 2018.

I'm assuming he died because he said you'll never know when you check out.
Wasn’t anything personally connected to Tom. But based on the true story of a father he had met at a hockey event. Son training his heart out, got the scholarship, whole deal. Died on the way down in a traffic accident.
The boy got in a crash and died it’s pretty sad when you think about it
I’m from 🇨🇦
