This song was featured in a pivotal moment during the movie 'Vision Quest'. An underdog wrestler is practicing his moves in the locker room.... getting ready to take on the top dog. Such a great movie.....gives ya goosebumps! 'Vision Quest' ~ an 80s movie.

This one takes me back big time. I hate it when pple say they are a one hit wonder. They made great music and were great in concert .
Tom Cochrane the lead singer has also had a great solo career with international success. Life is a highway is probably his most popular song.(it was Grammy nominated )
Tom and red rider released 6 studio albums and 7 solo.
He has won 8 Juno awards
    Canadian music Hall of fame.
    Canada walk of fame
On and on.his solo record mad mad world has sold 6 million records world wide.
The song big league is my personal favorite. It is an iconic canadian hockey anthem about a father wanting his son to Play pro hockey. It's part of our heritage. As a typical canadian I have family and friends whom have played pro hockey. So it has a lot of meaning. Life is a highway is in many tv shows and movies as well.
Love your discussion and reaction as always 👍could you please play big league sometime please.

Great reaction. This song is a real classic that most people don't understand. They just like the music, which is great. But the message is also clear.

I would have been 16 when this came out, and I've always liked this song, till now I hadn't really paid close attention to what he is saying, now I like it even more. I now see it is about the lunatic fringe in politics, right or left there is a lunatic fringe to be wary of.

I can't quote or say with any surety, but I do recall hearing......I think it was a DJ on a radio station years ago......that this song was written after John Lennon's shooting and was directed, of course, at his killer and those like him. Again, if someone knows for sure what inspired the song, by all means let me know, but that is what I heard some years ago. It does fit the lyrics, but then, many other things could as well.

    • @traog2445
      @traog2445 Před 5 lety

According to Wiki it was written before that, inspired by a book Tom Cochrane had read, regarding the Jewish Holocaust. I'm not sure from what is written there if he just happened to be recording it when John Lennon was killed or if the killing inspired him to get the song recorded and released.

I've listened to this song many times, but I never noticed the line "we're on guard this time against your final solution". That's a reference to the holocaust from World War 2.

Indeed, that is what the song is about. However, never forget the warning of the song. There are some who hold others, than Jews, in the same contempt. Right now it's race and politics. A Holocaust is a Holocaust and Genocide is Genocide. Race, religion, politics, gender matters not.

They had a couple of other semi-hits, White Hot and Young Thing, Wild Dreams (Rock Me). I saw them back in the day being a Canadian, and you are right, weird they didn't make it bigger, but Tom did well in his solo career. Great band for sure!!

Tom Cochrane of Red Rider has ccommented/stated several times his intent of this song. He had read a book of. WWII telling of how Rauol Wallenberg had saved 100's of Jews from "the final solution " during the war. Cochrane then wrote "LUNATIC FRINGE " based on what he saw as subtle but rising anti-Semitism(sp?) in America & also rising Neo- Nazism. Mind you, this was almost 40 years ago. Sadly, the song took on more & a different relevance post 9/11.

  • @pumpenheimer4570

  • @OronOfMontreal

This album was released in 1980. The song refers to "your Final Solution", which of course was the Nazi plan to eliminate all Jews from Europe, Africa and the Middle East. So that's one of the lunatic fringes that they had in mind.
Canada's Tom Cochrane of Red Rider was one of the most consistently fine song writers of the 1980s and '90s. So was New Zealand's Neil Finn, of Split Enz and Crowded House. Strangely, both artists wrote songs that had fantastic and powerful use of the electric slide guitar. Both men's music is worthy of deep, deep exploration.

Lunatic Fringe was a song written in the 80s about the creeping anti-semitism and right wing violence within society. The night he recorded this song, John Lennon was shot which cast a tone of anger and despair.
