I'm heartbroken for Alex. He's been by Ed's side for 65 years...losing him, still so young, is an enormous loss to him personally...and to music. Dreams is my all-time favorite Van Halen song. RIP Edward 💔🙏
at what point is someone not young? the average lifespan is 80 and you’re saying living more than half of your life is still young is like saying a yellow banana is not ripe
For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge was their most powerful record for sure. They were at the top of their game in 1991. I remember listening to Poundcake, Judgement Day and Round 'n Round for the first time and it just sent chills down my spine. The energy was absolutely overwhelming. This was a band that could ROCK.
I would like to live in july 91 again, just for a little while. This record through all the releases in the fall was just amazing. What a fantastic year.
+Operation Agatha He's a control freak, and if he wasn't we wouldn't have such a remarkable catalogue of music. Personally, I'm a fan of the craft, not the people.
Operation Agatha What have they done for him lately? So what? The last time Ed had an interesting shift in his playing was on the two new songs from Best Of, vol.1. That's irrelevant to my point.
Operation Agatha I have no idea what you're babbling on about. Did you read my initial comment (from Jan 20) closely enough? Nothing that you've said is even accidentally running parallel to what I stated initially.
Omg , i was still in the Persian Gulf back then. Our ship didn't leave till October....man i remember all i wanted to do was to get back home. Ha memories! I remember this album..i thought it was great. I bought the cassette and cranked it up all the time in my truck!
Van Halen is my all time favorite!! Eddie is the reason I picked up the guitar as is the case for a couple of generations of guitar players. And “Dreams” may have been the inspirational war cry for the Air Force pilots, But for me and my fellow Infantry men, we listened to Kill em All and Don’t Tread on Me from the Black album that happened to be released during Desert Storm. It certainly got the adrenaline flowing while unloading a 50 cal.
For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge will be celebrating its 25th Anniversary this June 18 (the day it was released back in 1991). It's just as good now as it was back then.
Alex to me was always the cool looking one. The guy you'd want to have beers with and laugh. Ed would be the one to just be in wonder with the way he played guitar. Sammy I'd want to be business partners with, and Mike I would trust as my best wing man at the bars.

The band is Van Halen, co-owned and operated by EVH & AVH. They consider Mike not a "full" band member, but merely an employee. And they treat that employee like shit, because they can. EVH makes clear that Mike's opinion of his band is not important, and Eddie squashes Mike's comment like a cockroach. Mike makes VH sound good. Without his backing vocals, VH was NEVER as good, regardless of who the main singer is. But that said, Mike was a total "yes" man. When they suggested jumping, Mike asked how high on the way up. After the tribute show for Eddie, whenever that happens, then Mike should feel free to write the dirty 'tell all' book about the band, unless Sammy tells him not to...
Everybody talks about Mitch or John or even Keith. You even hear a lot of chatter about Ginger. But in my opinion Alex is one of the reigning champs of taking the classic hard rock drumming to a new level. He was 1 of the 1st to use 2 kick drums and use them well and use them often. The drum performance on I'm The One is still in my opinion 1 of the best drum performances ever right next to Out of Love. John started the revolution along with all the other contemporaries but Alex took the torch and ran with it!!!! Go listen to those fat juicy drum tones on Different Kind of Truth and try to argue my point. Yep you can't!!!
During the DLR era , Alex was compared to John Bonham . I will always think he's more like Buddy Rich . Johnny Carson publicly said he's more of a rock drummer even though he played jazz . He made the jazz ROCK .
Andy Johns worked with Alex on the drum sound for this album. As Alex said back in the day, he described the sound as "woody", not harsh sounding but deep and big and loved it. If you kiddies and others don't know who Andy Johns is, he also worked with Led Zeppelin. This album had some awesome guitar playing by Eddie, great performance by all of VH. I thought that Ed's new Ernie Ball guitar didn't come out "bright" enough in the mix, just something a bit different, but live this tour was awesome and sounded great.
Van Halen was and is my all-time favorite band. Both Dave and Sammy eras. It's sad we lost Eddie so soon. I would really, really, really like to see an interview with Alex Van Halen talking about the loss of Eddie and how he himself has been since. Alex has been a total ghost since Eddie's passing. I find it very strange and odd that Alex has not interviewed about his brother. Nothing????? One would think he would do an interview for all the Van Halen fans. Perhaps he's just not ready yet.? I DUNNO?
Michael Anthony was treated miserably by these dudes. It's sickening to think about. He was a loyal, founding member of the band. I can't get past that, no matter how gifted EVH, AVH, and SH are/were. They treated MA like shit, and nothing can ever make that ok.
Yeah, I wouldn't include Sammy in this. He went to bat for Mike time and time again. He wouldn't do the 2004 reunion tour without him, though the brothers made Mike take a touring musician contract and screwed him anyway.
Sammy and Mike are friends and still work together, but I have seen past VH interviews where Sammy and the other band members cut him off too. Ed was the worst at it though. It's very sad what David Lee Roth and the Van Halen brothers did to Mike financially too. Just plain WRONG! Mike's background vocals were key to the Van Halen sound too!👎😟
LOVE EVH, but he interupted Mike all the time. The rest of the band did it to him too sometimes. Mike and Sammy are close, but I saw an interview where even he interupted Mike. It was also unfair what the Van Halen brothers and David Lee Roth did to Mike financially! Mike's background vocals were key to the Van Halen sound too!👎😦
@@shellywatson9845 Why do people continually treat Mike like a child? He's a grown man! He's got a voice, & it's his responsibility to use it, or not. The Van Halen's made Mike a millionaire, 70 times over. I think Mike should simply say, "Thank You". Enough already with..."Poor Mike". And why should a person expect to be paid the same amount of money for not doing the same amount of work? Mike was not involved in any song writing or musical arrangements. So it boggles my mind that he, or anyone else, would expect him to be paid the same as those who did. As time went on & they found huge success, the "on-going" heavy lifting & immense pressure was on Ed & any other member who assisted with these pivotal musical functions, for their continued success. Mike was never involved in any of this. But he was always paid handsomely for his very important involvement in the band.
@@coldwinter5710 you know it's funny but in Ted Templeman 's book he said he warned VH about that very thing in the beginning when he first signed them. They were all like "well there's four of us, let's cut it four ways" and Ted went "Hey there's a reason John Lennon and Paul McCartney got paid more on the songs they wrote and compose why Ringo and George didn't" he told them it would save a lot of trouble to have the money be cut according to how much someone contributes to a song and Dave went "Nah, man it's fine" Ted kinda predicted the future, cause it sounds like after seven years that might have been some of the issue. Eddie said before he got wore out by the pressure of always writing the music, and then Dave was writing song, Alex was handling a lot of the business side of the band; Mikey was playing bass and contributing his backing vocals, but the other three might have gotten the feeling he wasn't "contributing" as much as they were. Which, on one hand could have been fix with a simple "Mike you wanna write a song?" Mike was definitely done dirty, but hearing it from Ted all that trouble could have been avoided if they listened to him first
First time I saw VH was in Austin back in 82 on the Diver Down tour. Then saw them on the 5150 and OU812 tours in Austin as well. What I would do to go back to 1981-89.
This was the last hard sounding rock from VH. Every song is solid on that record. My favorite album.... they should listen to it again to get that full sound on the next record if they do one
VH for the most part was pretty soft after DLR left. They had a few good rocking tunes once Sammy joined but most of their stuff with him was pretty lame. They went from a hard rock band to a pop rock band.
I was looking for a comment on that. When Eddie cuts him off initially, Mikey seems pretty annoyed about it but literally bites his tongue. It really taints my view of EVH when I think of the abuse they put Michael through.
Check out that insane suit that female reporter is wearing. I remember the part of the 90's where big shoulder pads in your clothing was if fashion. Looks so silly now.
Holy Fuck, Edward. What is wrong with you?!? You walked away from this lineup to bring a can't sing Dave back and play with your kid???? just think of all the fun times they had though in those 65 yrs. They have lived the life of 10 men atleast.
