Kachna divoká - The wild duck (Anas platyrhynchos)
Kachna divoká (Anas platyrhynchos), zvaná březňačka, je pták z čeledi kachnovitých. Je největší plovavou kachnou žijící v Česku. Z kachny divoké byla později vyšlechtěna kachna domácí (Anas platyrhynchos f. domestica).
Popis
Délka těla: 50 - 60 cm
Rozpětí křídel: 81 - 95 cm
Délka zobáku: 4,4 - 6,1 cm
Hmotnost: cca. 690 - 1300 g
Samička je oproti samci méně pestře zbarvena a má hnědočerné ochranné zbarvení.
Jediné nápadné místo je na zadním okraji křídel, které odpovídá samčímu.
Kačer se od kachny liší hlavně výrazným zbarvením, které je nejvýraznější na hlavě a krku, které bývají tmavě zeleně lesklé, zobák je zelenožlutý.
Jinak je samec sivý, s hnědou hrudí.
Na zadním okraji křídel má kovovomodrobílý lemovaný pás.
Takto pestře je však zabarvený jen v období rozmnožování.
V létě jsou obě pohlaví zbarvena stejnoměrně hnědavě s tmavší osténkovitou kresbou.
V letním období poskytuje nejlepší rozpoznávací znak zbarvení zobáku: samci ho mají tmavě žlutý a naproti tomu ho má samička hnědý, někdy až hnědočerný.
Peří si mastí tukem, aby nepronikla peřím žádná voda. Mazová žláza produkuje tuk. Kachna ho vytlačí zobákem a roztírá po peří.
Na vodě kachnu nadnáší vzduch. Ten se drží mezi peřím a krycí pera vzduch zadržují.
Výskyt
Kachna divoká se vyskytuje na celém území Eurasie a Severní Ameriky.
Obývá nižší polohy, jejím biotopem jsou tekoucí i stojaté vody, ústí řek i mořská pobřeží. Lze jí nalézt i v městských prostředích, na které se dokázala výborně přizpůsobit.
Potrava
Kachna divoká hledá potravu jak ve vodě, tak i na souši. Potrava je rostlinná i živočišná, většinou převládá složka rostlinné potravy.
Rozmnožování
Kachny divoké žijí v párech, které se tvoří již na podzim v říjnu a listopadu na společných shromaždištích. Páření probíhá na jaře.
Hnízdo bývá především na březích vod, ostrůvcích, v rákosinách, ale i ve větší vzdálenosti od vody v dutinách stromů nebo na střechách budov. Kačer má za úkol výběr místa, ale stavba hnízda je jen záležitostí kachny. Hnízdění začíná od počátku března a protáhne se až do července a někdy i listopadu.
Samice snáší nejčastěji 9 - 13 zelenožlutých nebo modrozelených vajec. Na vejcích sedí pouze samice 23 - 29 dní.
Káčata se líhnou dokonale vyvinutá, zásoby žloutku jim vydrží 3 dny a pak se krmí sama. Jde o mláďata nekrmivá a matka je brzy odvádí na vodu, kam seskočí sama, nebo je z větších vzdáleností přenese matka v zobáku.
Mláďata velmi dobře běhají, plavou a potápějí se.
Ve stáří 20 dnů začíná růst káčatům obrysové peří a po 50 dnech jsou zcela opeřená a začínají létat. Pohlavní dospělosti dosahují již v příštím roce.
Zajímavým jevem je imprinting (vtištění) vylíhlých kachňat na prvního živého tvora, kterého vidí a který pak pro ně představuje po celý život schéma rodiče nebo sexuálního partnera.

The mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) is a dabbling duck that belongs to the subfamily Anatinae of the waterfowl family Anatidae.
Description
The male birds (drakes) have a glossy green head and are grey on wings and belly while the females (hens or ducks) have mainly brown-speckled plumage.
Both sexes have an area of white-bordered black or iridescent blue feathers called a speculum on their wings; males especially tend to have blue speculum feathers.
Length: 50-65 cm (20-26 in)
Wingspan: 81-98 cm (32-39 in)
Bill: 4.4 to 6.1 cm (1.7 to 2.4 in)
Weight: 0.72-1.58 kg (1.6-3.5 lb)
Habitat
The mallard is widely distributed across the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
It is found in both fresh- and salt-water wetlands, including parks, small ponds, rivers, lakes and estuaries, as well as shallow inlets and open sea within sight of the coastline.
Feeding
The majority of the mallard's diet seems to be made up of gastropods, invertebrates, crustaceans, worms, many varieties of seeds and plant matter, and roots and tubers.
Breeding
Mallards usually form pairs until the female lays eggs at the start of the nesting season, which is around the beginning of spring. At this time she is left by the male who joins up with other males to await the moulting period, which begins in June.
Egg clutches number 8-13 creamy white to greenish-buff eggs free of speckles. The eggs are laid on alternate days, and incubation begins when the clutch is almost complete.
Incubation takes 27-28 days and fledging takes 50-60 days.
The ducklings are precocial and fully capable of swimming as soon as they hatch. However, filial imprinting compels them to instinctively stay near the mother, not only for warmth and protection but also to learn about and remember their habitat as well as how and where to forage for food.
