I've been pretty obvious about my distaste for the last few seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race UK. After a stellar first and second season, seasons 3 and 4 just did not stack up, and quickly lost the series momentum. With so many international franchises, a lot of people starting dropping UK.
In today's video, we're going to talk about what UK5 did right to breath new life into the franchise.

Who would have said they could save a season in which they had to completely HIDE a contestant with edit tricks for three episodes
This season legit has saved the uk franchise
If you remember that Reddit thread by that ex-WOW employee said that if UK5 failed the franchise would most likely end, and well, it didn’t fail

the way i was certain ginger would be an early out and here she is pretty damn close to snatching the crown
true. i didn’t rate her much, and i thought she was being quite spiteful and nasty towards dede for no reason (i thought it was jealously). I really wanted (and expected) her to be eliminated no later than episode three. However, as much as I loathe to say it (because i did not like her or her drag at all from the promo and the first episodes), but she’s grown on me and i do like her.

This season has been tremendous. I’m shocked at how good it’s been. Not a single dud episode.
I'm SO glad that the removed contestants drama didn't overshadow the show and the other Queens, it's been an amazing series!

This season had one of my fav episodes ever with the acting challenge. Amazing win storyline and runway for Kate, great performances all around, lipsync (that should have been a double shantay) and a heartbreaking elim with Cara. Just perfection
I don’t think Cara’s lip sync should’ve been a double shantay despite her being one of my winner picks. Her storyline came to a close there and it was sad but it was correct. Kate vs Dede made more sense for the DS for me. Dede didn’t have a single bad lip sync and never deserved to go home until the last one, her fight to say was so amazing, but Kate arguably did better in the lip sync and her story of finally getting recognition for her hard work and cementing her place as a frontrunner was great.
@@azsazazsa I think production sent Kate home cause they didn't want her to be in the finale and have more than 1 win, cause I think we all know she would have slayed the roast more than anyone else, making her have 2 wins. It'd have also destroyed Ginger's track record, cause she'd have been in the bottom with Tomara.

My theory is whenever there is a disqualification or removal a contestant the seasons turns out to be great like season 4, 9, 12, 14 all star 2, uk 5, uk 2 all having a disqualification as things doesn't go as the producers intended them to be

i have a theory, and i’m sure it’s been said already… i think the disqualified queen was probably someone production wanted to push, SO they had to change how they were going to play this season. very s14 with kornbread where they really had to think on their feet!

ANYONE WHO HASNT SEEN DRAG DUEL ITS SO GOOD GO WATCHHHH drag race fatigue is real and drag duel is such an amazing breath of fresh air, getting to know the queens and kings has been so wonderful and refreshing

this season is a bit "back to the basics" like S15. the producers seem to have learned the lesson of not pushing a certain storyline, and it made for better tv!
I think 15 was a big step up from 13 and 14, problems with the release aside. It brought some of that old school spirit of the girls being shady that ppl have been looking to other series like PH for recently. There were too many queens but I’d still put it at a solid #3 this year after UK5 and France 2
Agreed. UK5 and France 2 have been the highlights this year. I need to catch up on Italia 3. Down Under 3 and Espana 3? Oof. 15, Mexico, Belgium and Sverige were ok. Canada it’s too soon, Philippines is a mixed bag. And as8 existed.
I think 15 was genuinely a good season but was flicked to the curbside by the last minute Mtv short format decision. I watched the original length episodes in WoW presents + and I have to say that we really missed out on a pretty great US season
Btw, I really really recommend Germany season 1 to anyone who hasn't had time to watch it. I think there hasn't been a more strong and successful first season of a franchise in the past three years. (Maybe UK 1 tops it, but maybe)

After the meet the queens I was like "girl I'll be rooting for Cara but all the other 9 are so boring this season is gonna be bad" but after 3 episodes I didn't want to see anyone sashay away 😭 they are all so precious
This series felt like it represented British drag authentically, kind of like season 1. The other series did that too of course to some degree but not quite like this.
It was also refreshing to see ‘older’ queens given the spotlight. Also a more traditional style of drag felt represented in a franchise that has seemed to favour queens who grew up watching drag race. It felt like going to see a show here in the UK and I felt very proud of the top 3. I hope this all continues in series 6.
I’m really shocked that this season has been so good! I felt the same about the fatigue, and now uk 5, can 4, and even dragula are really bringing me back
For me it was UK5, CA4, PH2, FR2, and the extended cuts of S15. It feels like we’re getting back to a peak.
@@azsazazsa i dont think a peak will ever happen again per se, but more of a return to form. I think the fandom still needs to stop harassing queens and then i think we can return to peak!
@@ellamayothethird906 Honestly I think PH2 neared as good as a season like 5 or 6, not quite there but we’re so close. And we’ve had some of the most across the board talented casts ever recently.
It felt like the producers realised “Vs the World is gonna be a regular thing, let’s set up a few queens that the audience will want to see a lot more of, but still feel like fair eliminations; Banksie, Vicki, Cara, Kate.” All challenge winners, all queens I think the fan base will want to see more from, I certainly do.
The only elimination that felt a little funny was Cara, coz that could have easily been Tomara vs Dede. Tomara stays, then I still think Kate would get eliminated at Makeover and then we would have gotten a Tomara vs Cara rematch for the last top 3 spot.
Still lowkey mad Kate went home lmao. But it was seriously an incredible season, this top three is so polished and I can’t wait to see who gets the crown

I agree with a lot of your points. In the UK we consist of 4 countries Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland, and diversity when selecting queens from these countries means a lot to the fans wanting a queen from their country to participate. I’ve been lucky from Wales to have the first winner the Vivienne and the iconic Tayce be Welsh.
However since UK 3, we had Victoria Scone who is an English queen living in Wales we haven’t had a Welsh queen since Tayce. The Scottish haven’t had anyone since Lawrence and Ellie. I was sad to see that the queens born in the UK were only from England this series, however I am glad that Northern England have had a good showing. We need more queens from these countries.
Also When it comes to diversity with race in the UK it is much more difficult than the US as we have a smaller population of POCs. The BBC want to keep bringing POCs however if too many are casted the next series may not have many and people may not be happy with the lack of representation.

I agree on almost everything, but I was legit shocked when Banksie went home. Me and my friend looked at each other like "wtf is going on", the way you described Dakota Schiffer for example. But for the rest your analysis is really spot on, thanks for another great video!
So glad you're back to making videos!! One thing you didn't touch on that I felt like also helped the season a lot was that the perspective on the queens in general has been way more positive, we constantly get reminded that all of them are insanely talented and that it's been really close calls for a lot of the competition. That's what I personally love to see, because it's still acknowledged when someone does bad but it's also highlighted just as much when all of them do well.
I think it’s also really important to mention the fact that people went into this season with the lowest expectations ever, if you go look at any of the spoilers videos before the season came out that said a queen gets disqualified, a queen gets injured, and a queen with no wins sends home 4 front runners all of the comments were talking about this season would be the biggest garbage trash dumpster fire monstrosity season ever so it really blew our expectations out of the water when it actually ended up being good, which always enhances the perception of a season
UK 5, Canada 4 and Dragula 5...I've felt so spoiled because it's been a HOT minute since I was enjoying pretty much every drag competition show running concurrently to each other.

@@Dalsemien agree to disagree. There were some very on the nose stereotyping going on with regards to what British culture is. This was of course not related to queens but the fact that it was the first foreign franchise hosted by RuPaul and they were trying to establish themselves while pandering to a USian host and possibly to a USian fan base. I think DRUK found its footing in establishing what UK drag actually looks like over the seasons

I do need the uk to have a more diverse cast, and treat asian queens better or fairly at least, also to stop bringing down alternative queens, dont get me wrong classic drag is amazing, but it seems like everytime we have a queens who does something completely different they get criticized for it and recieve the delusional "nobody understand me" edit
We need more Asian queen's especially, considering there are over double the amount of Asian People in the UK then Black People, yet we have had more black queen's then Asian queen's..... And never having a South Asian queen yet having more South Asian people then black people in the country it's crazy to me

Im loving this season so much but unfortunately it seems like the brand has lost a lot of momentum numbers wise. The engagement is very low, the girls aren’t getting a tour.. I fear for UK

I stopped watching Drag Race during US 13 and UK 3. That was my wall. But this season has restored my faith in the franchise. Thank you for covering it, I really hope people give UK 5 a chance. Great to see you back!

This season has been a joy to watch, truly the best UK season since season 2.
my only problem with the uk franchise (and canada's for that matter) is where is the all stars season! we're getting amazing power houses every season and casting them on a vs the world season where we're only getting 6 or 7 episodes to showcase their evolution seems a bit unfair to me
tbh drag race brasil certainly was very entertaining and it helped me so much with my drag race fatigue this year!!! season 15 was good, but the length of the episodes made me kinda sad and when they dropped the full episodes i was so over with drag race (also i had high hopes for AS8 and we all know how that turned out, probably worse than season 10/11). i might take a look at UK5 after this video!

I loved this season, its fhe first season i watched as it was airing and im going to drag con in January so im excited to see them there!!
I’m going to get hated on by so many but, Season 5 of Drag Race UK is by far my favourite season of Drag Race UK ever.

You see it as a plus that unexpected people made it to the finale, I see it as a minus that no one was really at the level of greatness of Danny and Cheddar. Ginger dominated this season never placed below safe with 3 wins that could have easily been 5 with the last two but I feel like she would have won maybe 1 or 0 challengers if she was on UK4. The general level of drag was so much higher on season 4.
I mean yeah but having an extremely talented cast doesn't make a season automatically good. I mean look at s13
Every single winner in RPDR UK is white (half are blonde). We need more diverse winners who are people of colour, representation is important !
The UK has a much broader representation of body types than the US, where body representation is seriously lacking

Strongly disagree that US S15 was worse than UK S5. The producers were hellbent on dragging Tomara and Dede way farther than they should have at the expense of actually interesting queens. I don't agree that "predictability" is inherently a bad thing on Drag Race. I will agree that UK S5 is better than UK S3 and 4, though.
Off the hop I thought Micheal, Vicki, Cara, and Banksie would be top 4. Only one right. Having my expectations subverted is such a good feeling.
I feel like we've been in a drag (no pun intended) since last year's summer season and no franchise hit really hard, even though there were some ok ones. But this year, starting with France season 2 mid-summer, we've (mostly) been on a roll. There's an invigoration all around different franchises (Germany, Brasil, UK and now Canada) and I'm really enjoying it!

I honestly loved all UK seasons lol but this season was great!
River and Choriza’s double elimination made me so angry! Choriza’s Margarita Pracatan impersonation was actually spot on. She was hilariously bonkers, just like Pracatan herself, and she didn’t deserve to be in the bottom. Ru didn’t even have the excuse of not understanding the character, because he said he remembered watching Margarita Pracatan on public access TV.
I’ve really enjoyed season 5 (though again, I’ve found many of Ru’s decisions questionable). Team Ginger for the win!
I mean, if they had to save someone someone, they would have saved River cause she was def better in the lipsync than Choriza. Also, I hated the draglexa episode stopping River from getting a 2nd win like she should have that episode-

The editing to make them more human is better. I'm sure there was cast interaction with the other seasons but we didn't get to see it.

I think this season had the perfect amount of drama. It’s hard to have one without making a villain.

i actually loved season 15 especially with the extended episodes. there are some flaws like the predictability and there being too many queens, but i felt like it checked a lot of the entertainment factor boxes for me.
You have literally said all of my thoughts! I have been LIVING for this season, and it's because of the unpredictableness of it all! I have also been able to guess the tops from most recent seasons, and it makes it so boring. This cast is amazing and I hope seasons like this follow! #TeamGinger
I can't entirely agree about season 4. It was one of the strongest seasons with IMMACULATE promo, a diverse cast, and one of the strongest top 2 in the show's history.
So for me, season 5 is more like a continuation of the success than a breaking point. To be honest, I find the season 4 cast even more interesting.

Seriously, Drag Duel is such a good show. No rigging for storylines, creative challenge prompts, interesting cast interactions, I think it’s better than a LOT of Drag Race seasons.
I will continue to request you make separate videos for lip syncs and challenges like the Drag Race CZcams does, but that’s just because I want to rewatch them again!

Tbh I’m not loving season 5, I think the main issue for me was Dede tho overstaying her welcome. Like she should have went home the episode Cara did, her and Tamara and no reason to not be in the bottom. After that episode I almost stopped watching cuz I had had it. Thankfully I’ve kept watching the the last few episodes have really saved the season for me. Let’s hope the finale keeps it going #TeamMicheal

This season has been sooo good! Kate Butch was my favorite, and while I was sad to see her go I thought that episode went much better for her than it could have, especially since that lip sync I think was the closest win of DeDe’s. Now I’m team Ginger!

season 16 also has potential to be one of the best main franchise seasons in the past couple of years
I don't usually disagree with you, but I have to say that I think you're wrong about season 4. Season 4 has one of the strongest cast we've ever seen. It's true that they didn't have many storylines going on, but I certainly think that it is the strongest cast from the whole UK series.
For me, season 5 has been such a disappointment, I cared for a lot of queens but I think there's a problem going on with what they're showing us. They want us to see Banksie as a threat, Cara Melle and Vicki Vivacious as frontrunners... And the are sent home by Dede(not Cara) who is allegedly doing so bad in the competition. And then Ginger win three challenges on a row. That, for me, is bad storytelling, and I found myself watching through every week thinking "OMG here goes Ginger Drag Race again".
For me is the same problem that we had in España 3: As with Pitita, it is SO clear that Ginger is winning the season and, for some reason, they're sending home the other frontrunners.
At this time I only care for Tomara, when at Season's 4 finale I could see the crown going to Danny, Cheddar or even Black Peppa. This year I definitely don't care 😂
