- Directed by Jeremy Miller
Starring Justin Kinner
As an avid endurance athlete and someone who is always seeking the next challenge, Justin Kinner was naturally drawn to the Grand Slam of Ultrarunning. The “Slam” is a series of four of the oldest 100-mile foot races in the United States. The Slam starts in Virginia at the Old Dominion 100, followed by the world-renowned Western States 100-just 21 days later in California. Next is the Leadville 100 in Colorado where most of the course is above 10,000 ft in elevation, with parts reaching nearly 13,000 ft. The Slam concludes in Utah at the Wasatch 100 where runners ascend over of 24,000 feet of unforgiving mountain terrain. With all four races taking place over the span of just 13 weeks, the Grand Slam is a grueling challenge, both physical and mental. Throughout the endeavor, Justin fully experiences the highs, the lows, the peaks, and the valleys that come with conquering four 100s in a summer. Justin learns to love the little things, comes to understand the power of presence, and appreciates the value of a strong support system. What merely started as running 400 miles, quickly became something so much more.

Anything is possible if you train but believing in your training is more important. I started running at age 60 and overweight by 60 pounds. Got myself in better shape, ran some 5ks, then 10’ks then half marathons. Didn’t do a marathon till 2 years after starting and completed 6, but I wanted more, so I trained for a 50k which had 4,000 feet of elevation which I completed in 6 hours 34 minutes. I was hooked. I’ve now done 12 complete 50ks, 2 complete 50 milers and one 100K to date and now I’m 69…not stopping now.
How cool is that?! Congratulations, and Happy Trails to you!
Great message. Do you post any videos. I'm 76. On 8/1/19I weighed 216. I always walked for exercise but decided to build up to two hours a day. Diet wise I just watch the fat. The goal for 2021 was 2021 miles. I accomplished that the monday after thanksgiving. No surprise the goal for this year is 2022 miles which I'm on target to complete well before the end of the year. I now weigh 136. So far so good. I'd like to see some videos from guys more my age. I might try jogging again. Anyway. Great post.
That’s really awesome man. I’m 22 and you’re in better shape than me at 69! And I’ve been lifting and doing athletics for years!
💜💜💜
Wow! Inspiring! Awesome job 👏!!
The people with a sprint start of an ultra always cracks me up
AMAZING!
I will run an Ultra during this lifetime!
I’m training for my 1st Half Marathon coming up in September!
One step at a time 😊
Thank you for the Inspiration!
Best of luck with your training! Thanks for watching!
You will both love it... and ...HATE IT.
I have a half marathon in September too… I hope you do well !
You go this!
It's October now, How was the Half Marathon?
Watching these types of docs, as a runner and filmmaker, just really makes me want to create something like this.
That’s one of the many points we wanted to get across with this film! Inspire others to do more. It’s certainly a challenge, but totally worth it.
I feel you Benjamin! I’m currently chasing completing a full ironman. As a doc filmmaker, I’m always inspired by stories of overcoming adversity. This year I’ll be making a film about running the Chicago Marathon 🙏🏼
Benjamin, just do it. Plan it nad do it. You got all puzzle to do it. I will watch it!
Do it! Just subbed to you, I’ll watch
This is soooo inspirational -,-
The moment you make the decision that you are either finishing, or leaving on a stretcher, when the decision is really made, it is still hard. But it becomes simple. Take another step. If you don't fall over, take another.
If you fall over and can get up. Take. Another. Step.
It's hard.
Also very simple.
His support system is so beautiful to watch. Hard to imagine how some people are blessed to have such wonderful people supporting them. Beautiful indeed.
Appreciate your kind words. My support system is indeed a beautiful thing, something I never take for granted
This guy is the definition of steely, gritty, determination.
Thank you, Joel! It takes a village, and am Blessed with mine
Watching you accomplish this goal was extremely inspiring. I am currently training for my very first 26.2! Hopefully in 15 weeks I can come back here and tell you that I completed my first marathon. Thank you for posting this awesome journey and I wish you the best in the future.
I love it!! Good luck with your first marathon & enjoy the process! Hope to hear back in 15 weeks 😁
Heck yes! Congrats on being brave enough to set that goal. Sending well wishes your way for the next 15 weeks!
I’d love to relive my first 26.2 again. Enjoy it
awesome 🙌 enjoy the process!
I'm bad at maths, did you allready achieved your goal?
What an absolute gem this documentary. Once in a while the youtube algorithm is gold and this is a definitely one of those times.
Yes!! We’re glad it found its way to your feed. Thanks for watching 🙌
Thank you! Jeremy did such an amazing job!
really suprising how huge a difference the heat makes to the races, its night and day the way you look in the cold race compared to the hot ones
Haha! Yes, it is. I'd like to think that I've learned to tolerate the heat better, but definitely prefer the cooler weather. Thanks for watching!
Those cut off denim shorts at 17:12 can't be unseen
This was so inspiring! LOVE how you had so much support and how it brought you all closer together. I’m about to run my first long race.. it’s a 9 hour 1.5 mile loop but about to run further than I have before and after watching this feeling pumped! I appreciate you sharing your journey ~Rachel
Congratulations and i am inspired. Love and respect from #Sikkim
Glad to hear that you found some inspiration. Thank you for watching!
Congrats watching your channel got me into running. Can't wait to see where this journey takes me.
Truly inspirational to the grit and perseverance you displayed… A big shout out to the whole support team and wishing you many more miles under your feet…
This was awesome.
My mom is my crew at all my races and the part with your parents crewing made me smile.
Hugging my mom at the end of my first 100 was one of the greatest moments of my life.
All the feels. I couldn't agree with you more. You definitely aren't the only one making sacrifices to toe the line at these events so having family there makes the moment that much sweeter.
I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This should enter netflix...awesome!
Truly inspiring..the hardship of the run itself and but the support from your family, brother and friends are really heartwarming
Thank you! They mean the world to me
Absolutely awesome bud. So inspirational!
I love the family being right there with you, running & finishing 1 with your Bro.
So cool.
🙌🏽🙌🏽👌🏼
Thank you SO much! My family is everything and Jeremy flawlessly captured that
This was an amazing video to watch. Mainly, you sound/seem as though you are a good human. Your thoughts, feelings, emotions towards your crew, family, friends, and the sport had me feeling emotional behind words. Congrats on your grand-slam. Amazing accomplishment.
Thank you for your kind words. Appreciate you taking the time to watch!
I am really impressed with the way you put things together. I found you by your work with Nick bare. Keep it up! Love the content and the passion you clearly have for this.
Ok that opening shot was siiiiick
Motivation is fleeting, I know but you did just make me run 5 Miles! Not much but hey, you gotta start somewhere😃👍.
Love to hear that!!
Amazing story and incredible story telling 🙌🏼 Huge props and thank you to Justin for chasing this feat and to you for creating this documentary!
Thank you for your kind words. It was so fun to see both Jeremy and I'd passion come together for this
Thank you Brock! 🙌
So incredibly inspiring and awesome. Running my first marathon this Sunday in preparation for my first 50-miler at the end of July. All in preparation for a goal of running my first 100-miler in 2023. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hope your marathon went well!! And cheers to you and all of your big goals!
Congratulations! So impressive, and a great inspiration. Well done!. Congratulations! So impressive, and a great inspiration. Well done!.
So glad this popped up in my feed. I love these well put together blue collar runner docs. Great job on the grand slam!
Thank you! We love to hear that our passion project is resonating with people.
Thank you John! 🙌🙌
I was going to watch two of my friends run a marathon but a few days before the one friend decided not to run. I took her number and was able to run the first 12 miles but then alternated running walking to the finish. I’d just been running 6 miles a day for years. For the heat week I could barely step down off a curb!!! Not a fan of marathons, too many other activities to participate in physically that keep me in shape and that I ❤️
This is just wonderful in every possible way. Thank you, Justin and Jeremy, from the bottom of my heart. I needed this to motivate me to keep going and meet my goals. 🔥
Comments like yours honestly give me chills. Thrilled beyond words to offer you some motivation 🙏
Thank you, Justin. I was 20 when I finished my first Ultra 90 km. After that, I've never really taken any sports beyond gym and martial arts. Last week I was on a Trail (light 7km, but mostly 'lovely' rocky hills - Pag Island, Croatia), 50 pounds overweight (245 pounds atm) - with my 3-year-old Junior (30 pounds) in a backpack (backpack is 10 pounds only). I wasn't even at a gym for more than a year. But I did it, finished the race. Since then, I have fallen in love with adventure again, and this video made me order my new Garmin Epix. Monday is coming, and I don't have any excuse to skip training. I am 46 now but feel like born again.
Many thanks for sharing this grand effort.
Many thanks for watching!
Epic, beautiful, and inspiring, all at the same time! Thanks a lot for sharing that with us :)
Thank you for taking the time to watch!
This is a very professionally filmed documentary/film! This totally deserves more views; way to go! :)

Thank you for following our journey!
Thank you for watching Kevin!
An amazing documentary and an even incredible achievement. Thanks to all involved 🙌
As someone who has been struggling with my motivation for ultra training recently (albeit just getting it back after a decent race) this is exactly the type of stuff that helps drive you on. Thanks so much!
Beyond honored to offer you some motivation. Events are the snapshot. Enjoy the process and journey it takes to get you to the start line. Never lose sight of how brave you are just to sign up, head out your door, and seek fulfillment. Let that courage and the people you surround yourself with give you wings. Cheers
Thank you Chris!! Justin hit it right on the heard 🔨
Thats lovely mate, thank you so much
What a badadd. The most humble savage I have stumbled on. Got my first 10k coming up here in 5 weeeks!!! This got me pumped to finally get started!!!

Dude thank you so much!!! This wouldn’t have been possible without you capturing that audio for the beginning & end of the film. Huge thanks man.

Seriously though... I did watch every minute (well multitasking at work) and enjoyed it all! Gives me inspiration for some of the things that I might accomplish and share on my channel one day.
@@SeeChadRun to have our story inspiring others to chase big things in their own life is a dream come true, and affirmation that we did this the way it was meant to be.
Great short film. Loved it 👊

Congratulations! 🎉👏🏼 So impressive, and a great inspiration. Well done!
Thank you!!
Hey, I know so many people in this doc! I'm a fellow Grand Slammer (2019) and I think the GF (who crewed my slam) and I will have to give this a full watch later. Wonderful to see this great sport getting the exposure it deserves!
I love it! Ultra is still such a new sport & there really hasn’t been a lot of media exposure for it. That was one of the many goals of this documentary. Thanks for commenting & I hope you enjoy the film!
Congratulations on your Slam! Such a memorable summer. Hope you enjoy our journey and it brings back memories of yours. Cheers!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! To new adventures!
Thank you for watching!
Really enjoyed this film!! Very well done! Thanks for sharing this awesome accomplishment!!
Thank you for watching!
Thank you Terri!
Thank you for an amazing video.
I adored running to the point that I also read about it, listened to podcats about it, watched videos on it, even dreamed about it.
Managed to do a few marathons, as well as one half Ironman then was training for longer endurance running tests like 50k and eventually 100k but was struck with a horrible back injury dec 2015
It's taken me a few years to even watch stuff about running as it hurt me to watch something I could no longer do.
I am now...after my 8th attempt in 5 years (took me 2 before I even contemplate it) to run again.
Cardio gone, physical fitness gone, motivation hanging by a thread.
I'll never forget my first marathon, I remember it like it was yesterday.
Thank you for sharing your story, and for watching!
Really enjoyed the film! Inspiring watching your journey!🤜
Thank you!
Great film. I love how the emotions were filmed for every race.
Jeremy definitely captured all "the feels." Glad you enjoyed!
Thank you Debbie! 😁
very great self motivation...this is inspiration for ultrarunners
Thank you!
Great film! What a journey. Thanks for taking us along.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for joining!
Awesome film! His family and support system is incredible and inspiring!
Thank you Josh! And yes!!! It quickly occurred to me that his family is his “why”
Yes, yes they are! Thank you!
Such a fantastic and inspirational documentary.
Thank you!
Your thumbnail looks so amazing man
Incredible feat and dedication , I can’t imagine pushing my body like this , I think we all it in is it’s just where do you start to get to this point. I mean this is a life style , you have to be obsessed sociopathic and a masachist to put your mind body and soul thru that type of torture. If you love what you do why don’t you put your heart into it . I’m a cinematographer and I have put thousands of hours obsessed with my craft so I guess I can relate to this , putting my body through hell so that 13,000-25,000 people can experience a concert, that they’ll never forget . Building the stage, lighting , setting up screens and projectors , l.e.d walls, running cables , setting up cams , white balancing them , and working 18 hr shifts 4 days a week , is in my mind similar to having this amount of dedication and passion. You sacrifice relationships, family time and everything for your craft .. question is why? What’s the point ? Idk maybe too feel important or distract you from your demons . ❤ never give up !
I struggle jogging 5 miles, hats off to all of you👏
Thank you for watching!
A brilliant watch! Thanks to all those involved 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you for watching!
Thank you🙏
Great Accomplishment. Great Tribe. Great Movie. Thank you very much.

Awesome accomplishment- great story - insane documentary 👍🏻
You guys rocked it!
Thank you 🙏
Thank you!!
Congrats Justin, been inspiring us since middle school xc skiing! And congrats Jeremy, very good film!
Thanks Drew! You all keep me feeling young, most of the time 😜
Thank you Drew!
Respect. Shout out to mom pops and big brother. The real heroes!! #team ❤
100%
Dude I couldn’t imagine 50 even 100 is absolutely insane but 400 that is on a different level of anything is possible
It's been an unforgettable journey for sure. If anyone were to tell me when I was in HS that I'd be running 100 mile races and seeking more I wouldn't have believed them.
I paced my buddy at Leadville last year and will be again this year. What an awesome and absolutely driven group of people. Congratulations on the journey!!!!
So awesome! Thanks for watching TJ 👊
Pacing is seriously SO fulfilling! So great to share those experiences with people in your life who are chasing big things. Thank you for committing yourself to it and for watching!
You did a great job putting it together. I was all trained and ready to do the last leg and he missed the new more strict cutoff on the way back up Hope’s Pass. So I’m hoping he has a redemption story this year.
@@tjmarlettw1497 Oh man! Such a bummer. We ultra runners sure can be stubborn haha. Hopefully he doesn't see that as a failure and is able to use that as fuel for this year. Being brave enough to even sign up for events like Leadville, and to put in the work to reach that start line should never be lost on anyone. Best wishes to you and your runner in this years journey!
such awesome and supportive parents...wish I had that..anyways you just motivated a retire cross country runner...keep going you are amazing!
I am endlessly blessed in that regard! Keep going!!
Sooo absolutely amazing!! You and Justin are unstoppable! Love you son❤️
Thanks mom ❤️❤️
Jeremy fits so seamlessly into what ultrarunning is about for me. Real people, like Jeremy give me wings
Thanks for sharing. You are so inspirational. Goals 🙏🏽Stay blessed.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you so much 🙏
Must be so awesome to have your parents waiting for you at must IDS station. You very inspirational.
Yes, I'm very Blessed! Thanks for watching!
Great work! Awesome film!
Thank you Steven! 💪
Great story and congrats on this huge huge huge accomplishment!
Thank you so much! and thank you for watching!
Inspired a lot man.
What an incredible, supportive family ❤
Thank you! I'm very Blessed
Thanks for the videos it helps for me especially im preparing now for 190km.
Thank you, and best of luck in your venture!
Def amazing. David Goggins did something similar to this. I just completed my first marathon yesterday and I’m hooked. Just signed up for my next one in a couple months. Time to drop weight and improve my time. Hats off to you buddy. Your a warrior.
Thank you, and best wishes for your coming adventures! Enjoy the process!
Goggins also did the Moab which is 260 miles
Moab is 238 miles actually
Great film. I've been intrigued by how runners train and prepare. As far as foods and drinks. I want to bike up to 32 miles.
Nutrition in endurance events is a constant moving target. The best advice I can offer is to test/try different sources of nutrition, time intervals in your training.
You keep getting better!! Keep it going
Thanks my man 😎
Justin is a Stud. That is one hell of an accomplishment. Can't wait to see him run a 200 hopefully in the near future.
Thank you! It truly takes a village. Lots of sacrifices and miles by all involved.
The 200 mile distance is for sure on the radar.
Justin has some BIG plans for the future 😎😎 gonna be doing some amazing things. Thank you for watching!
Congrats man, fantastic job
Thank you!
this is always such a team effort. I believe the runner alone could not accomplish this, it's always strong (mentaly and physicaly) runners with amazing people around them.
I am Blessed with a great team. They Always make the experience that much more fulfilling!
Beginning to train for my first 50 miler with only having a couple 50k’s under my belt. Very inspiring to see the footage from during the race and true you do have major grit!
Congratulations to you on being brave enough to sign up for your first 50 miler! So exciting!
Thank you for your kind words.
Enjoy the process and journey of preparing for your first 50 miler
I run with you today. So happy!
Happy you joined us!
This was great. I’m training for my first marathon in 10 weeks. I’m so excited for it. Not sure I could do a 100 miler though.
Muy inspirador! Qué gran familia, eres bendecido ✌️👏
Gracias🙏
Well done! Such insight into the time on the trail and thoughts both on and off it!
Yes! There’s a lot to capture when it comes to ultrarunning, but his mindset & “why” are what we wanted to really focus on 🧠💪
Thank you Bryon! I think people can get too focused on events, and it desensitizes them to the act of pursuing big things. Event or not, the pursuit of big things is making you a better person. Jeremy seamlessly captured this and it is an honor to work with him
For me, it began with pursuing the big things of just re-learning to walk and use my hands/body as best as I can...I had a major upper spinal cord injury 22 years ago and I am an incomplete quadriplegic/I use cane(s) and leg braces for my marathons (229 so far on foot) and ultras....I love the journey for training, and I do my best, as I know the outcome of the event is not for certain for me.... the lessons I have had and the challenges along the way make life worth living...
You are a beast Justin, very inspiring!
Thank you So much!
Wow this is amazing and really inspiring 😍👍🏻🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!
