  • Every day thousands of cars drive by what looks like an ordinary parking lot in Decatur, Georgia. But there is nothing ordinary about it. A memorial, many don’t even know exists, sits roughly 300 feet from Memorial Drive. The mausoleum, a Civil War-era burial site, is enclosed by 15-feet tall granite walls. It’s seen better days. Graffiti stains the outside of the shrine while inside overgrown trees and grass cover the tombs. But Jessica Derise was drawn to it.
Local residents have long suspected that there may be slaves buried in unmarked graves near a Walmart parking lot, outside Decatur's Crowley Mausoleum. This is what we found.

They really should clean up that mosoleum, it wouldn’t be that hard to clean the foliage off of it, the tree growing on top, the kudzu climbing it, makes it an eye sore also, Walmart should at least pay a landscaper to keep it up.

Even if Walmart would take care of the surrounding area, that would help. All of the damage is their fault due to planting the trees. The trees and seeds of the trees have caused damage plus due to their trees it has created a safe haven for trash dumping, vandalism, graffiti, homeless camping and more. The last few months there has been a push to clean it up and it is much better. Not finished but much better.

I knew a girl whose father dug up that graveyard. He said that was left because couldn’t get permission from family to move the graves. I don’t know if they actually relocated the other bodies but he talked of finding evidence of some being buried alive. There is also a grave left by the bridge over I20 or 85 heading out to Avondale Mall.

Yes I think I remember there was another near I-20 and Columbia Drive. The county wanted a ramp from both sides at I-20 but the families of those buried didnt want the grave site touched.

I live in NYC ; but, I remember that the mausoleum was clearly, in view, when driving into Avondale Mall (1970's). There's a smaller antebellum plot, next to a small strip mall on the former Lickskillet Rd./Gordon Rd./MLK Jr Dr. across the street from Atlanta's West View Cemetery. I'm 70 & remember both locations, since my early 20's.

The assumption of slave graves was based on the assumption that the family was wealthy and built the mausoleum. That’s debunked by the historian in the episode but the “journalist” keeps referring to slave graves. It’s a family cemetery that sadly were all forgotten

There is zero chance those “air pockets” are unmarked graves. The granite walls were built when Avondale Mall was built. They marked out the surrounding the family cemetery knowing it was there and then built the staircase and walls and backfield the gaps. The graves were at ground level until then. If there was an unmarked grave in the parking lot it would have been 20’ deep plus from ground level.

Excuse my ignorance, but one question? If after 100yrs everything is gone? What bones are the Archaeologist's finding? And how old are those Mummies? I realize that weather, and earth, play a part in the body decomposing. I just find it so strange. Decatur, has quite a few neglected graves. There is one on McAfee Road, on the left, between Long Dr. & Meadow Lane. In such bad shape, that it justs blends in with the scenery around it. Just makes you wonder.

Someone knew of the bodies buried there at the time the mausoleum was built, there should've been some records of possible of that the parking lot was the area of bodies buried there. Anytime land is purchased and unmark graves each one has to be relocated to another area before construction can begin. I bided on a house in Pensacola won the bid of $1.00, only to find out that it had unmarked graves.

No mercy shall be given to the murderers .That day will be worse than cancer , for the rich have showed no mercy and requested the murder of all of those women , men , and children that they are calling slaves .
