It breaks my heart seeing cemeteries in this condition. No respect for the deceased. Sad how the world has become so fast paced and don't have time to keep the final resting place for ancestors who paved the way for what we have today. RIP to all who are buried there. Iowa enacted a new cemetery safety and remembarence law which can be seen on the website for Jasper County Genealogical Society. It was no easy job to get the state legislature to contribute eventually. However they are all fenced in now with considerably more upkeep according to state requirements now!
Well you can’t expect every family to stay in one region for all eternity. I don’t know where most of my ancestors are buried because 1.) their burials have been built over and 2.) my ancestors spread from Appalachia to all over the United States. Point being, after several generations, you can’t expect people to stick around.
@Texan1stAmerican2nd I suppose not but if this was a church cemetery, someone should have retained responsibility for it. The UK is obviously a much, much smaller country, but if you are buried in a church cemetery here, no matter how long ago, your grave is not abandoned.
It is so interesting to see these cemeteries. The care that you take when you are walking thru them, is really nice to see. You show such respect for the history. Keep up the good work.
What these very old cemeteries teach me is that, with the exception of truly significant historical figures, we all will be forgotten in the fullness of time. In fact, even relatively soon after our deaths, people will move on with their lives and stop visiting our graves. Once our contemporaries have all died, no one will come to visit unless it's something like what Sidestep Adventures does. But who we really were in life will be forgotten forever. Makes me what the point of life is.
Please remember you are a child of God. Your life has meaning in everyone you meet. I do agree it's so sad about forgotten graves. I have no children, so when I'm gone no one will look for me. In my job, I help people, and try to shine some light in this world. Never despair.
There is one thing you cannot forget! If you are truly a child of God, He will never forget you! On Resurrection Day he will call you out just as He did Lazarus in the Bible! We will live eternally with him!
We are more than these bodies. People and animals have souls. Souls do not die. When animals die, their souls return to God. Additionally made in God's image, people can freely choose to get to the Cross, obtain forgiveness for all our sins, and live for Christ. He will never forsake us. And since He rose from death, we can enjoy life forever with Him. Regarding our bodies, the Lord will give us new ones on Resurrection Day. He knows everyone buried everywhere. Do not despair. Find yourself a good church and talk to genuine Christians. God bless you. You are here for a purpose. Reach out.
Hi I do I located cemeteries in my county and document them take pics and we clean them up I keep an eye on all of them to keep them from beening destroyed by timber companies and I keep them safe I live here in Jeffersonville georgia

Hello Robert its sad to see that this grave yard is in this condition and seem forgotten about its even sad to see Mr Isoms grave like that as his stone says he was a Confederate solider my great grather Josua Franklin Gibson who was born in orange county Va in 1842 was a Confederate soider who served with the 54th Va inf company E after the civil war my great grand father married sara harlow they lived in Zion Va my Great Grand Father passed away in 1915 and my Great Grand Mother Passed away in 1916 they are buried in Zoin Va and since we have family in Va on my dads side my great grand parents grave is looked after my great grand father Josua is my dads grand father my dad who passed away in 1978 is a U.S Army Veteran i would like to say Thank you for visiting this grave yard so that its not forgotten in my family the men have been involved in our countrys wars dating back to the Revolutionary War thank you

It's fanciful thinking on my part, imagining being in Heaven for all these years, & suddenly hearing your name read. How wonderful! And taking that thought one step further, gathering all those nameless souls, to share with them the joy of knowing someone was thinking of them on this plane.
I think the same , When I go to a cemetery and look at the markers, I try to read every one and not leave anyone forgotten. I feel sorry for the ones not marked.

Absolutely love the history of the people and their lives from so long ago. It was not an easy life for the settlers. Seeing that this cemetery is in a govt park can volunteers help to do some cleanup like removing the fallen trees? Might find more interesting history under all the leaf and pine straw

Very interesting little graveyard. What would be cool would be to go back out on a dry day, with a battery-operated leaf blower, and see how many fieldstone head or foot stones you could find under the leaves. Thanks for taking us on your adventure! I never get tired of these old cemetery walks.
There is an organization that requests if you find a confederate grave they want it reported. I believe they place appropriate markers at the grave site and enter the information into a growing database.
My great great grandfather has one of those newer markers. He was a private and just 17. He survived the war. He went with his cousins and future brothers in law and walked home from NC when Johnston surrendered back to Georgia. He was Lewis Knobloch Powell. We have a picture of him. And my Mother knew him as an old gentleman when she was a child as he lived into the 1930s. He had a white goatee and mustache like Colonel Sanders. He passed at 92. The doctor made him give up snuff for his health at 80 and he took up chewing gum!
This Zion graveyard is just so tragic. I think the sky is crying as you honor the people buried here. I wonder if the false tombs were built to keep the graves from being dug up by wild animals. W.D. (William Daniels) Watkins (1851-1900) is found in his family tree on Ancestry. He left his wife and five children. Matilda, his wife, died in Centerville, GA in 1941. I think perhaps he owned land in this area, or maybe his parents did. I left him a forget-me-not on Findagrave. I wish Talbot County required annual maintenance on all graveyards and cemeteries. There are so many in your little county that have been abandoned.

Cemetery looks like some of the ones I have been exploring in NW Missouri and/or central Illinois or across Kansas & Nebraska. Always liked exploring the "forgotten" or overgrown cemeteries for gives me a thought that the people may actually appreciate a visit once in a while from someone, no matter how brief. Also, these types of cemeteries are where the REAL history is. Look forward to more adventures!!
such a sad state of affairs' when a cemetery, is left uncared for and given back to the elements that it is hidden in this way and not even taken care of for all those whom lie in these hollowed grounds. I really dislike when these Old Cemetery's are forgotten an unkempt. I know Family's move an sometimes information is lost an sometimes forgotten . I do know that some of the Younger Generations could have cared less about these Cemetery's more important things to do. I am very Glad My Parents raised us to keep up with our Ancestors an to enjoy Celebrating our Family's past an Present. Just not alot of good People like this. I have relatives by marriage with the last name of Watkins that were from Jefferson County, GA. Makes me wonder if WD Watkins and MT Watkins were somehow related to those Watkins in Jefferson County, GA. While I'm late watching these videos that you make Robert, I so appreciate what you are doing and keeping history and genealogy alive. I hope it is also inspiring some young people to do this in their home towns. I know your videos have inspired me to hunt for new cemeteries in Franklin, Stephesn, Elbert, and Hart County, GA as well as locate undocumented gravestones for the existing cemeteries in these counties. This area is also rich in history.
Wow, Robert! You are dedicated to be out in the rain! Are there any church records from the Mt. Zion Church? Church records might be helpful in giving memberships, weddings, and deaths. We found info in the church records about my ancestors in Florence, Arkansas. They were in possession of family members who donated them to county in the 1970s.

Robert it would be interesting to find out if some kind of sickness came through the area which took so many children’s lives. I am just guessing if the children just like today went to school where illnesses were spread that it took a lot of their lives. Also, I wonder if it was a one room schoolhouse which might even be more of a concern for spreading illnesses. As a parent I am always saddened by children’s graves. My familys cemetery in central Florida originally had a small one room school house . It was used as a community gathering place and for church services by itinerate preacher's. After churches and a school we're built in town the building became a storage for the cemetery association. At some point it caught fire . Now do to crime the cemetery is gated and the key kept at a nearby house .
I often wonder if this thing about abandoned graveyards is more unique to the US given its size and the way history played out there with things that caused towns to die like the Gold Rush, and the Great Depression etc.
That area was a big pine tree/wood growing, processing area. After the old growth was harvested, pretty much everyone moved west towards Alabama, then Mississippi following the Pine belt.
Researched and found W. D. Watkins was William Daniel Watkins. His wife was Matilda Cronic. Their children were; Lulu, Mattie, Orrie, William and Maggie. Likely M. T. was their child as well.
Thanks for sharing the video! We have one with the same name up the road that also has Watkins in Batesville GA. I have a lot of family up there buried. Many moved after Lake Burton was built
Very cool. In most old cemeteries in our southern counties there are a handful of fieldstone gravemarkers scattered around. In some cases there are initials and a year carved into them.
So sad I think. Genealogy, I hope they have those Graves recorded in the local church and or county. I'm so glad your bringing light to these forgotten cemeteries.
The reason there are many 1970’s records of old cemeteries is because of the movie “Roots”. Many people decided to try and find their own, including my mother and Aunt. I have those records today and am working on a updated tree for my nieces and nephews.

He stated the land is in the middle of a state wildlife area, where licensed hunters can go hunting for legal game during the various hunting seasons.

Always sad to me that these older Cemeteries are all but forgotten and certainly neglected. Glad you are able to bring them to light so that they will always be remembered. Interesting history on the few people who are marked . Great video. Keep Safe ❤Keep Well❤
Robert it would be interesting to find out if some kind of sickness came through the area which took so many children’s lives. I am just guessing if the children just like today went to school where illnesses were spread that it took a lot of their lives. Also, I wonder if it was a one room schoolhouse which might even be more of a concern for spreading illnesses. As a parent I am always saddened by children’s graves. My familys cemetery in central Florida originally had a small one room school house . It was used as a community gathering place and for church services by itinerate preacher's. After churches and a school we're built in town the building became a storage for the cemetery association. At some point it caught fire . Now do to crime the cemetery is gated and the key kept at a nearby house .
Our family cemetery is .. little mt. Zion just In country side of Enfield and springerton, IL.
I have no ties to Georgia, I don't think. However, through your eyes I feel like I do. Thank you for another great adventure.

I often wonder if this thing about abandoned graveyards is more unique to the US given its size and the way history played out there with things that caused towns to die like the Gold Rush, and the Great Depression etc.

That area was a big pine tree/wood growing, processing area. After the old growth was harvested, pretty much everyone moved west towards Alabama, then Mississippi following the Pine belt.

Maybe the rocks used in marking graves was remnants of the church’s foundation. Keep up the explorations.

Researched and found W. D. Watkins was William Daniel Watkins. His wife was Matilda Cronic. Their children were; Lulu, Mattie, Orrie, William and Maggie. Likely M. T. was their child as well.

Thanks for sharing the video! We have one with the same name up the road that also has Watkins in Batesville GA. I have a lot of family up there buried. Many moved after Lake Burton was built

Very cool. In most old cemeteries in our southern counties there are a handful of fieldstone gravemarkers scattered around. In some cases there are initials and a year carved into them.

The reason there are many 1970’s records of old cemeteries is because of the movie “Roots”. Many people decided to try and find their own, including my mother and Aunt. I have those records today and am working on a updated tree for my nieces and nephews.
That is such a grand story.
