Robert, thank you for remembering the Mount Zion Church graveyard. I wonder if perhaps the church burned down and was rebuilt at the other location because that was a better place for settlement. This is just so tragic. So many graves, but perhaps the families buried their loved ones at this original graveyard even though the worshipping was done somewhere else.

I belive you are correct Robert. The people were far out in the woods in a place not easily accessible by transportation in those years. The land was not really suitable for farming or raising animals. I think people just found other places to live that was easier and more hospitable. Thank you, Robert

One would have to be either absolutely fearless or, at least half bat-crap crazy to go up against all of the unknown dangers waiting for you but even worse, the known dangers. Tough, tough people. It's a miracle this country grew as quickly as it did. Blows my mind. 💥🤯

I can't help but wonder if something bad happened to a number of the folks who are buried in unmarked graves, and that is why you get that sad and lonely feeling walking out through the area. Like a bad sickness or even a Native American attack where several settlers might have died. I was raised in Northern Arkansas and now live in S.W. Missouri. Those scattered piles of rock look so familiar. This is a part of the edge of the old Ozark mountains, and digging a hole for anything can be very tedious. Right below the top of the ground there are so many rocks!

I always feel sad when I am in graveyards. I don't care if they died at 100 it is still sad. Of course, sometimes it is worst. When I found a grave in woods near where we lived 45 years ago. The young woman was 23 and she died in 1852, Her tombstone said her and her stillborn child. That made me extra sad since I was 21 myself at the time.

These were probably more common in cemeteries where the people were fairly affluent since these were put on a new grave in addition to a headstone. These helped to deter the graverobbers who dug up and sold fresh corpses to medical schools back in the 1700-1800's. Just wondering.
