    I have a $900 Lenovo Legion 5, with AMD 7 5800H and RTX 3050ti graphics, 16GB ram/512GB ssd and I just upgraded to 64GB ram and 1TB ssd for $280. I was thinking of switching to Apple for once, but it seems that my system is still the same or more powerful than the Mac mini M2 Pro. It seems that I can continue using my Laptop for about 2 more years before buying a more powerful one and I think there is no point in waiting to Apple because it is always 3-4 years behind what is standard in windows.

      That is the beauty of a PC (laptop or desktop). You can just upgrade RAM and Storage later...for much cheaper when on sale...and get a couple of more years of use out of that machine. If you don't need the Mac for a specific purpose, stay with what you have...btw, that's a good laptop you have.

      Don't ever buy or use pre build PCs if you really care about your money and you really wanna best performance from your parts. Prebuild systems are crap, worst cooling, bad ram used, bad cabinet used, way more expensive.
      Build a PC with the help of professional PC builders.
      You can build a PC with i5 12400, 16GB ddr4 dual channel ram, Asus h610 prime or b660m mobo, Intel arc a750 GPU, Samsung 980 500 gb ssd, 35 dollar cabinet, basic 450 watt bronze rated psu

    The one perspective where the M1 & M2/PRO models are impressive is when you compare them to the best iGPUs from AMD and Intel.
    It would be nice to see the comparison with a 6900HX’s 680M graphics. This seems to be in the same neighborhood as a Base M1/M2 model. I do think the 10 core M2 GPU wins but everyone sings the praises of AMD’s iGPUs so it’s not completely fair to discount the iGPUs in the M-series.

      Modern gpu fans are quiet as a whisper and don't even spin unless they're under significant load. If you specifically choose parts for silence and a proper case with a closed front panel and not gimmicky exposed rgb fans, then you can build a PC that's way quieter than most macs. The old Mac Pro used to whine and scream like a mad man under load. If size is a concern then I understand but you can certainly get very quiet with PC.

    • @lamenamethefirst
      @lamenamethefirst Před rokem

      But I do understand that it's a lot of work to find and get each individual part that you need and fits your budget. Not everyone has the patience for it. When it comes to laptops I do think that Mac's efficiency really plays a role in making it silent. I have yet to find a Windows laptops that doesn't sound like a hurricane under load. Basically for me, if you really want power just get a desktop. If you want portability and efficiency get a laptop, if you want both then you gotta deal with fan noise.

      You actually have two questions. Laptop or Desktop? Mac or PC? In terms of Mac or PC, you have to ask yourself if you are ok with macOS. If you are, then a Mac will be simpler and require less "maintenance" from an OS perspective. The mac works like any appliance day in and day out. You are confined to Mac available programs however, Photoshop works on both Mac or PC. Also, Macs tend to be more expensive as well. After you sort out Mac or PC, whether you need a desktop or laptop is a question of how mobile you need to be. I have been extremely happy with the battery life on the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Better than any windows laptop I've ever had and can't see going back to a windows laptop anytime soon. If you want details on what I think of the MacBook Pro, I did a 6 part series.

    Apple silicon native World of Warcraft runs fine on 8/8 M1 chip (1080p, medium/low) and some (mostly US) went with Mac Studios just to play WoW on a Mac as a long standing mac user. On the other hand non-native FF14 works way worse (Windows version packaged with Wine/CrossOver to run on macOS/Linux) even with third party launcher providing better DX over Metal config for Wine. Aside of that the value limiting factor is that games tend to require disk (and memory) space. WoW is 100GB and for optimal results 16GB of RAM. So you are looking at minimum at 512/16 mac mini for one game. And there are many games that aren't available for mac so no matter what M2/M1 can do with with it GPU you won't use it to play games you want.

    I'm not sure why the base Pro is being compared apples-to-oranges with the non-Pro variant, particularly when "buying 2" of the latter is looked at as a comparable solution. There's already info out which discusses how going to 512GB increases overall SSD speed, having extra cores in a single machine is _markedly_ more useful when considering multi-threaded applications, and of course Apple only gives you the opportunity for higher GPU cores with the Pro as well (naturally, at a premium). I'm not defending Apple's greed, but I can still see the obvious benefit of going to the Pro here over the non- _..if_ you're already spending Apple-level prices for a machine. The slightly-better than 3050 is as good as a mid-range Apple can be expected to do this gen without going to the laptop config or a full tower.

    • @ImaMac-PC
      @ImaMac-PC  Před rokem +3

      The point of the comparison with the non-Pro variante was to illustrate how the price Apple is charging is not for the hardware, but rather for the PRO moniker. The M2 Pro is nice but it's not $1300 nice. At that price, you are better off picking up an on-sale M1 Pro in a 14" MBP or getting a base M1 Max Mac Studio second hand for $1,500. Apple-level prices for PRO machines are going up.

    The more I see articles or videos talking about 'Apple's gaming future', the more I'm totally convinced there isn't any. Idk why they're trying to half-heartedly pitch to that market when anyone who owns a Mac and wants to play games has already resolved themselves to just get a console, and anyone who wants to game on desktop have never even entertained the idea of getting a Mac.
    The mid GPU bothers me less about how much it lacks for gaming since the lack of available titles anyway make that a non-consideration, I'm disappointed at how it performs for Blender. A well-specced PC sure doesn't fit as well on a desk or look as clean and professional as a Mac in an office or home workspace setup for sure, but man does Mac lag behind, and that's an area that genuinely is within the market they're pitching too which they'd really do well to fix. Basically you're buying a CPU with some accelerator cards built in, which works for pro-sumer level video editors and people who are doing CPU heavy calculations or processing. But for the extremely high price tag, you're getting a computer which is practically useless at 3D workflows and true enterprise/hollywood level workflows, codecs and apps. Basically, Apple has successfully targeted this generation of over glorified CZcamsrs and consumer content creators but left many real pros in 3D, CGI, post, render and musicians hanging (made worse by their petty dispute with Nvidia, dropping support of industry leading GPUs). I say musicians because the M-series has been nothing but a living hell for many musicians with numerous musicians holding their old Mac Pros, iMacs and Intel MacBooks specifically due to the plethora of bugs and incompatibility that M-series introduced.

I find it astounding that you immediately went ahead and promoted the Mac Pro, while my original post, which was more a general critique of M-series design philosophy was overlooked. The Mac Pro is HORRIBLE!!! It's just a scaled up version of everything wrong with the lower level M-series chips. It still doesn't have a proper GPU, it's overpriced, and the moment a single component on the tiny integrated chip fries itself from heat or voltage, the whole thing needs to be replaced. It still doesn't address the problem that M-series broke so many features and applications that many users, both consumer and professional, have come to love and use over more than a decade of Intel and AMD processors. No offence, but even Apple's own software got broken and a billion bugs were introduced as a result of the Apple Silicon transition.
      Please, don't single out a line from my original post and take things out of context. "Hollywood level workflows, codecs and apps" refers to the fact that Final Cut Pro only supports ProRes, while GPUs and custom built expansion cards are used extensively. Then there are apps which take advantage of these aftermarket, user-installed hardware... none of which any new Mac can do. Who cares about a Media Engine? Those things only support a few codecs which Apple chose when they were built and sold. The moment a few new standards are released, you're going to be left with a hardware accelerator wasn't programmed to process the material and effectively becomes useless.

Let all the older graphics cards (RTX3060 & below in the 3000 range along with all the 2000 & 1000s) now pass into extinction, because the Arc A750 is also much newer & more future proof whilst support for the others is vanishing. AMD & Nvidia are short shipping to maximise their profits whilst ripping us off proving they don't care! So sod them and switch to supporting a new 3rd supplier for a better deal!

    While your comparison looks true theoretically, I do not think real performance for Apple's GPUs is that low. The problem with Apple's GPU that they are different in every aspect. At the hardware level, Apple GPUs are Tile-Based Deferred Rendering (TBDR) unlike Nvidia, AMD, and Intel which they are Immediate Rendering. At the software level, Apple is using Metal while most games use either DirectX or Vulkan. When Apple said that M1 Ultra matches Nvidia RTX-3090, many people laughed. But when we look to the performance of Shadow of Tomb Raider which is written for Mac and for Metal, we can see approximately similar performance though the game is running on Rosetta! So, Imagine if runs 100% natively!
    Comparing the Teraflop or using other application/ benchmarks assume Immediate Rendering not TBDR will never show the real performance of Apple GPUs. TBDR GPUs are completely different animal.
    I think Metal is better and more organized API than DX12 or Vulkan and I think also TBDR is much better architecture specially for Performance Per Watt. But all that needs software and game support.
