    I have a R9, and had similar issues, but once I set my FFB up properly to not be over powered and clipping too much, I never have an issue, it gets slightly warm, but it is night and day from how it was before. Im in Iracing, I set my pithouse to 100% and I use the in game strength value to adjust for certain cars, but I found the sweetspot for me there is about 7.0 on that FFB strength(setting the Wheel NM's to 9.0 in settings). ACC ffb whenever I have tried it, is crazy strong and is probably in need of dialling back. I run 2-3 hour races regularly, the wheelbase is barely warm. You need to run it with some headroom available so it isnt going over and clipping.

      @amyorissa thanks for sharing your settings. I have been speaking with Moza a bit about it and yeah it seems turning it down and putting a fan on it is the best bet!

    • @MichaelSmithRaces
      @MichaelSmithRaces  Před 5 měsíci

      @DaveAndreason this seems like a really easy and viable solution that im hoping to try, did you start with one fan and decide you needed two, or just happen to have two available?

  • @thereverent117
    @thereverent117 Před 4 měsíci +3

    i only know how it works in iracing, but there you can setup a visual bar that displays the ffb strength in realtime. this is perfect to see how often it clips. especially with a "weaker" base it is important that you turn the ffb down enough so it doesnt go to 95% mid corner all the time. 1. reason is because it will clip a lot in bumpy corners or ones with compression like on the nordschleife or bathurst. 2. reason is to have enough headroom to realy distinguish the normal steering forces to the details like curbs, bumps or compression/decompression. this will lead to a better feel of the car and the base not having to push 90% all the time, wich is not the "intendet usecase" i guess.
    i hope this helps because with propper settings the wheelbase should not overheat at all, exept in really warm rooms i guess.

    • @MichaelSmithRaces
      @MichaelSmithRaces  Před 4 měsíci

      @thereverent117 yep in this case it was a combination of all the factors in sure, warm room, no airflow, heavy clipping due to the car and track. My main gripe with it is that if pithouse or the base warned me about temps I would have been able to correct perhaps (between prac quali race) but instead it almost masks it. I have since been in contact with Moza a few times and looking at the temperate logs the key thing to keeping the temps down for me is airflow and I now have a small fan blowing towards the base and me which is quite good!

I sometimes play for hours and hours thats when it gets very warm but never have i lost FFB or felt it getting weak.. I think I will DIY some fans for it. Just to be safe. I have had a Moza R5 (incl. lite brake) set for +/- 4 months now, and I have had the issue sometimes but did not know why. I have set it to radical from day one,. I haven't had it when I was on lower FFB settings in the beginning but for a better FFB feel I have used it on maxed settings for about 2 months and on shorter (+/-1.5 hrs) stints/ races it didn't happen. But on longer stints, I have had it, and like you, I was thinking tire wear that caused it. I haven't used telemetry options because I could not really make heads or tails of that tbh, but I look into that to start understanding that from now on. I have to test how I can avoid it, I have chronic tendon problems in my elbows/wrists and hands, and using high FFB settings was causing them to act up forcing me to take days off. So I was already planning to dial FFB down so lowering that might help, if not then I have to look towards other options. However, the probable negatives of not getting enough FFB might hinder my fun/ performances (which haven't really been world-class anyhow (yet??) LOL).
    Anywho thanks for pointing this out, because I did feel the base was hot to the touch but never thought this was a/ the problem.

    I ran a moza r5 forever....hours on end...and this never ever happened. Run the conservative setting in Pit House and stop your FFB from clipping all over the place. Doesn't matter if your FFB is set to 75% in game when all the settings are cranked at 140% in software and a 300% inertia setting..... • @MichaelSmithRaces
      @MichaelSmithRaces  Před 3 měsíci +1

      @romeocharliedelta I will make a followup video sometime, but the key thing is airflow. If you have a fan pointed at yourself / the base and in radical mode it will be less likely to throttle itself. Also as (many) people have said this was a long stint and the base was clipping, so it was running at its peak power more than normal.
      Whether you should keep it or not I cannot say, but I just wanted to make the video to ensure people have all the information I can provide. Otherwise the base has been great for me and I have not had a problem again since this video now that I have it in Radical setting, and use a fan on it.

    • @MichaelSmithRaces

      @419tommy yeah I think the main things are ambient room temperature and airflow over the wheelbase

  • @mementomori4972
    @mementomori4972 Před 3 měsíci +1

    That's one of the issues with the low torque wheelbases. people buy 5Nm or 8Nm wheelbases and think they can run them constantly at 5 or 8Nm, not realizing that this is the limit of the small motor. That's one reason why I always recommend to save up a bit longer and to buy something more capable, but no one ever listens to my advice. The CZcams influences with the affiliate links are certainly more trustworthy than I am. People will end up wanting more torque and they will need extra head room to preserve detail and to avoid clipping. In essence, you don't want the motor to fight you, but the other way around. I run my VRS DD Pro at 13Nm (its rated at 20) and it doesn't even get warm to the touch.

    • @MichaelSmithRaces

      @@MichaelSmithRaces That's one reason, why I chose VRS. I don't like to be "imprisoned" into one eco system. And it's an industrial servo motor. I won't be able to kill this thing anytime soon. It might not be pretty, but that's the last thing I'm concerned about.

    I had a Moza R5 for 1 year and ended up switching to the 15nm Simagic Alpha. The R5 has great details but heating ruins the immersion of the game. With the Alpha it stays cold all the time, I think I made a good change. I feel more grip from the tires and the undulations of the asphalt, in addition to it having a very beautiful shape, identical to the Simucube's shape. From what many people say, R12 eliminates this heating problem.

      I modified a CSWV2 a few years back with massively upgraded motors. You need to pass the air over and away. I used a silent aquarium pump to blow cold air into a sleeve I had surrounding the motors, then a fan to exhaust the hot air. Worked perfectly. These bases won't be as simple as the motor is the size of the body and has not only no room to breathe, but its totally enclosed within the base. I would start with removing any non structural panels you can to let the heat escape. The permanent fix would be to rehouse the internals in a custom frame and add fans to that. Or just buy an Accuforce for £600 and get Simon at SRM to make your Moza rims USB.

      @paulheijmans1326 I feel like it should be able to output its max though still? I just wish in pithouse it told you if it was throttling, that is the main issue I have with this. Its understandable that it can only produce a certain amount of force before getting hot, but the way it is inconsistent without telling me is the reason I made the video. I had to look into the logs (once I realised the issue) to find out.

      What is your room temperature? Wonder if perhaps it was just a little warmer than usual and caused it to overheat? For a budget friendly option Moza R5 seems to be the best. Simagic has some pretty nice bases, but would be great if they had a bundle.@@MichaelSmithRaces

      The vast majority of people won't ever experience this. Unless you're doing very long races or running high ffb for several hours it's generally not an issue. The other wheelbases in this price range also get hot and each one has a different way of dealing with it.

    I feel for you. I was originally looking at Moza, but after much research i ended up increasing budget and going for Asetek la prima. Couldn't be happier with it. Plus can eventually upgrade from 12nm to 18nm. I understand higher cost involved, but would've spent a lot more buying a starter dd and losing on selling and buying bettet one. I thought just skip that and get a decent one.

      That's not a fair comparisions, is it?
      Compare it to Moza's "equivelent" (R12) that barely gets warm to touch, let alone getting hot - skin burn occours at 52-54ºC (denaturation of proteins), so that's what is really hot, hence the "radical" word use by Monza in that extreme profile :)

    • @deadmanwalking1930
      @deadmanwalking1930 Před 5 měsíci

      @jopereirapt bs, the r12 also has heating issues. Just depends on individual units, but heard many ppl with r12s complain about overheating. Plus, the r12 absolutely doesn't feel as powerful as a 12nm should. Too many issues with that company.

      @@deadmanwalking1930I have yet to see a review with *real* torque numbers. Why nobody does it? Ask them. A simple kitchen scale does the job...
      A 100hp diesel engine also feels more powerfull than a 100hp gasoline one... not because it produces more power at it's limit but because it provides more power over the whole range - do you *really* know that's not the case with Asetek? (a different distribution curve provides that, no need to increase the hardware power in any way)
      BTW, Asetek has great products, you did well.

      @MichaelSmithRaces yeah they just don't have large enough fins on the base for heat dissipation I think.
      The CSL DD for example is basically wrapped in a heat sink with fins.
      I'd get two noctua 40mm fans and mount them on either side and see if that fixes it.
      Noctua fans are nearly silent so it wouldn't ruin the experience

      If it shouldn't be used at 5Nm, it shouldn't be advertised as a 5Nm wheelbase. A manufacturer could restrict the output at 70% and prevent overheating in the first place, just like Simagic does with the Alpha mini for example.

    @darmichar73 Před 5 měsíci +6

    I have this base. Either your video is very intentionally misleading or you do not know what you are talking about and are blaming it on the base. Your base did not overheat. You were clipping in every corner, demanding too much of the wheel.

    • @MichaelSmithRaces
      @MichaelSmithRaces  Před 5 měsíci +2

      @darmichar73 yes there was clipping, but the wheel did overheat causing a huge loss of torque by around 20 minutes into the race. Reviewing the logs in pithouse the motor was up to 62C. I agree that it had no where else to send the heat so reducing torque is the only option. I made this video because until experiencing this I also often told people that the base never overheated and ware rarely even that hot to the touch! I will make a follow up when I have more data and hopefully a solution with maybe a fan or updated settings.

      MOZA do know a thing or two about electronics as they make all sorts of camera equipment. Gimbals, etc. Maybe 5NM just isn’t enough. For actual sim racing. The video footage shows the wheel base clipping constantly. Having a higher powered wheel base and running it on slightly lower settings. Would solve any overheating issues. I’m running a MOZA R16 V2 I have it set to around 80%. I do 6 hour endurance races,and it doesn’t even get warm to the touch.
      Other brands also have issues with their lower powered DD’s overheating. This is usually because they are run at full or close to full power constantly.
