    Very simple, detailed and explanation and explaining the possibilities along the way

    Great video Spencer….. being from the UK regarding the clear caulk….. your right we don’t have it….. BUT… we do have clear polymer adhesive…. It’s designed for sealing, gluing and waterproofing etc etc… and many of the brands are paintable with a water based paint… they are classed as hybrid polymer adhesives. The UK needs to catch up in areas of the trade. I hear you have a damn good waterbased satin and gloss paint by the name of Benjamin Moore Scuff X… you can get it here but only offline and it costs around £98 a gallon. Again we are in litres here… apparently the best money can buy though haha! Take care. Marc

    Hi Spencer,
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I know it can be tricky to answer questions sometimes, but I'd like your opinion on something: What do you think about peeling off the first layer of wallpaper (color or design), applying primer to the glue layer, letting it dry, and then painting?
    Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    I watched your entire video and have a question about doing your procedure over two layers of wallpaper that is directly over wallboard. The process would be different because I can't remove down to the bottom layer backing without going through the top layer entirely. I'm sure that would be a problem. Some of this paper is peeling...the top layer only. What would you suggest I do. It is a very large bathroom area. Thanks, Judi

    Great informative video like always. Towards the end did you use the same Killz oil primer to prime the imperfections after you coated them or did you use Skillz 2 which is a water based paint? I cant seem to hear it well. Also is it necessary to use a specific paint for bathrooms, would a normal latex paint you use for a living room do? Sorry for the many questions. Have a great day.

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  Před 2 lety

      Great question; no I did not use the same because the first one is thick and it makes a staple on the wall; the second one that I used was a water-based KILz 2
      When you purchase paint for a bathroom, use fungicide; or a mill do side; you can find them right at the Paint desk of your paint store

    Such a great teacher! I love your videos however, I'm still confused about the difference between a shellac / oil based primer and Gardz which is a sealer. On a lath and plaster wall with wallpaper should I use a shellac primer than Gardz if I apply wallpaper again and or mud than Gardz to seal? Thanks for the awesome informative content!

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  Před 2 lety +1

      For plaster/lath walls
      1. Seal with oil primer from KILz.
      2. Skim Coat until flat.
      3. Put Gardz over your Skim Coat when your Skim Coat is dry.
      4. Paint or hang your wallpaper.
      Thank you so much for your compliment; if you think I do a good job, would you mind giving me a five star review on the following link? Would you say some words about how my videos have helped you? I would greatly appreciate it

    Why not gently sand the area before adding Kilts? Especially if your just going to paint the wall?

    Genuine question: you did an amazing job but was it still cheaper for your client rather than re-drywalling it? Here in the uk, it woukd have been far cheaper to strip the wallpaper and if necessary reskim with plaster.

  • @tparks423
    @tparks423 Před 2 lety +1

    Ok Spencer. I have discovered that the wallpaper in my home is already painted over. I don't see a video that addresses how to proceed not knowing what process was used or what kind of paint. I did try to strip a small section and determined that taking it down is not a viable option. what counsel do you have?

      I watched your video; your results are beautiful. I watched again @ 1.25. I did not hear my issue addressed which involves the issue of paint ALREADY over the wallpaper. Your wall preparation was immediately over unpainted wallpaper. If you would be so kind as to specifically address this, I would be thankful to know your opinion and recommendations.

      My mistake! You are correct… Forgive me. Go right over it; you know what you’re doing I can tell by the way you speak. Go right over it and oil base over that paint and you will be good. Go around your entire wall and tap on it to make sure that it’s all solid; if it’s not solid, just cut out the wallpaper with a razor blade, oil base prime it and then put joint compound I need to make flat, oil base prime over your joint compound and go for it!
      Did I help you? If I did, would you please write me a five star review on my public profile on Google so that everybody else can benefit from your experience with my knowledge? If you don’t mind, here is the link and you can say something good about my willingness and ability to help you

    • @spencercolgan
      @spencercolgan  Před 2 měsíci +1

      You don’t have years of experience. I can tell. If you did, you’d know that this is a completely perfect method. Sheetrock is paper and gypsum. What’s the difference adding more paper to already-paper walls?
      You’re wrong.

      @journeytree Před 2 měsíci +4

      @@spencercolgan I have a house with old painted wallpaper peeling off of the walls from the previous owner as experience. I am right. You are a prime example that "years of experience" can still yield people who don't know what they are doing.

    • @maryqueen7158
      @maryqueen7158 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Then the person didn’t follow this process which Spencer is showing. He didn’t sand, or scrape, or make sure the wallpaper underneath was not loose, he didn’t use the oil based primer /seal it with anything worth anything. Or else it’s peeling painted wallpaper that’s 20 years old plus. I think you do not know what the previous owner did before he painted in that paper. Spencer is doing a perfectly fine thing here. The only thing you can really do when walls underneath wallpaper were not properly prepared.

    • @journeytree
      @journeytree Před 2 měsíci +4

      @@maryqueen7158 Just do it right and take the paper down. You will 100% have issues in the future because the adhesive will break down over time. Paint over paper is slumlord behavior. Then you'll have a bigger problem when the wallpaper won't come off because of the paint over it.

    • @maryqueen7158
      @maryqueen7158 Před 2 měsíci +3

      @@journeytree I beg to differ. Paint over wallpaper WITHOUT GOOD REASON NOR PROPER PREPARATION is slumlord behavior. If wallpaper is soooo stuck straight to Sheetrock then with the sanding and oil based primer, it makes it a brand new wall. Then you prep for painting, and paint it. Or you could skim coat over the super rock hard stuck wallpaper as well to create a brand new wall. You could take a hammer to the wall and scrap off the stuck paper with the back of the hammer as well, and ruin your walls- then you could skim coat and have a brand new wall that way too; ready to paint.
      Haha there are many many ways to skin a cat!!! I only know any of this because my husband happens to be a wallpaper installer for many many years. Anyway have a nice day!
