- I'm grateful that the recent spate of stupidly expensive Epiphone releases reminded me that I needed to get the much more affordable P90 equipped Yamaha Revstar RSS02T. At only $850 it sets the bar very high... join us guitar nerds to see and hear why! 🎸🙌

Love how you said no to the grand a half Epiphone and got a comparable guitar for half the price . Really puts the new Epiphone pricing into context 👏. I’ve got a couple of Yamaha SG’s, both of which were less expensive than the current new range of Chinese Epiphone’s 😎
This model isn’t made in Japan, only the pro one above.. still got Japanese engineering and QC though it seems.
@@rickyoldtree cheers for the info. I will edit my comment. Still really good though 👍
Its a profit grab bc the $1500 Fujigen Ibanez Prestige S i got is now $2000 same w Epiphones. How do we know its a scam bc starter pack guitars are still $150 to $199 why didnt they go up 25% too!
@@rickyoldtreeindonesian probably
@@che2335Starter packs tend to be more for price sensitive buyers in general, though. They are less for making a direct profit as much as creating future consumers that spend more.
I think these guitars look modern, sleek, balanced and well sorted out.
I've been waiting for TWO YEARS for this review.,....you'er ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE reviews....THANK YOU. Actually pulled the trigger and bought it when I didn't see you review it but your thoughts are just so spot on with this beast....LOVE IT.
GREAT OUTRO JAM by the way.
LOVE YA man....always look forward to your thoughts.
Chris buck “yes that great guitarist” uses one of those as a stage guitar so good enough for him.
Doesn't he use a specially made Japanese model? Sort of an unofficial signature model
@@quiksilver78 I don’t think so.
It would be disingenuous for the brand if he did.
Doesn’t mean he hasn’t modified his personal guitar but no.
@@quiksilver78 Buck uses allsorts, he's got some good guitars..
56 Strat, 60 Melody Maker etc but he'll play Squier Jazzmasters and the Revstar he's seen with.
@@quiksilver78 Chris uses a custom, one off, nitro finished version. You can see it on his channel.
@@PeterMoore350 he uses a custom shop version
I got one of these after watching your review of the basic model (I decided that between this and the pro there wasn't much that would justify the extra £'s). I concur with everything you say, except your comment on the colours available. Mine is Hot Merlot and looks fabulous and I like the others as well. This is a fantastically spec'd guitar for the price point. The build quality is excellent and it plays really well. I recommend people get one if you are going through a bout of GAS.
Same here... i got the swift blue one. Every time i play it, i can"t believe how well its made and how nicely it plays. Cheers.
I'd go for the Merlot, too. Although a slightly deeper Burgundy might be nice 😅
I have that same guitar and it is my favorite guitar i have ever owned. I am seriously blown away by the build quality not even considering the price point.
How is the P90 hum on this model?
How does it sound using digital effects compared to analogue pedals?
Cheers
@@keithb5612 the p90 hum is on par for what u would expect from a typical p90. Its definitely noticeable especially if u have other devices close by. As far as digital effects, im using a UAFX Dream or Ruby, either an RE-202 or Timeline and a GFI Specular Tempus and they all sound completely normal to my ears, but i usually play some type of single coils, so i guess im accustom to a little noise in my signal path.
@@orryfishburne5326 Many thanks for your reply and signal chain info. You have some great pedals. Cheers
@@keithb5612 thanks man. Im glad i could help
You just reminded me of why I want a P90 Revstar. It’s also obvious that this guitar inspired you. I think that’s the best playing I’ve heard from you. Also, your rig was PERFECT for those P90s. Great video!
That's some of the best playing I've heard from you Col! 👌
😊🙏
Looking forward to watching all of this - out of all the ‘non classic’ guitar designs I think this is my fave - a really good mix of retro and modern it just looks so right !
I bought mine in the baby blue! Love it! Great tones, and looks great too!
Welcome back.
I always look forward to Fridays for your spot. Really helped me to retain some of my sanity through the Covid time and I continue with pleasure as a subscriber to the channel. I wish Yamaha offered the Revstar in that P90 configuration left handed. I have really become a big fan of P90's
Anyway a big thanks for doing what you do, I so enjoy tuning in.
Great review like always.
I love mine. I bought the humbucker version a month after owning the P90 version. They are 2 of my most favorite guitars I own.
Really like that guitar. It’s got a cool retro cafe racer (like you said) kind of vibe and it sounds amazing in your hands. I’d love to have one of these.
I've had one of these for around six months after wanting one for quite a while, I went for the Hot Merlot and love the colour but that totally a personal think. But the Guitar itself is unreal for the price the frets being stainless steel for me make them effortless to bend and play and really the over all quality I received the guitar in was unreal tbh. I've had Fenders and Gibsons and 4 times the price that haven't had the attention to detail that these have had. I always recommend these to people looking for a decent yet affordable guitar as I just think for the price its hard to beat as the build and sound are just amazing.
Another good one mate .. love the revstar .. keep up the great work . Looking forward to the next one .
I have had ups and downs with Yamaha, but I have always admired the Revstar with the P90's. Never owned one. Great review, typically enjoyable chat-up.
Another 40mins of pure enjoyment.
Cheers Col` 👍🙏🍻
Lovely looking and sounding guitar. Good to see you back Colin and another quality review. ✌️
Yes, the world is back on its axis. Perfect review because I was just looking at these.
Outstanding jam! Motivating!
Fair winds and following seas to all.
Excellent assessment and comment! Like you said, I only wish that the P-90 version would also get sold with a hardtail and the racing stripes like the humbucker version. It’s also sometimes uncomfortable to play rock while muting strings with the fancy tail that’s usually more suited to playing clean tones - a Jazz player would really like the tailpiece on this model. The carbon reinforced neck is a huge bonus and should be done on all guitars at this juncture. I do like the specs, colors and aesthetic Yamaha biker vibe otherwise, just those changes would make the P90 version perfect for rockers. Have to admit that this tailpiece is well designed, though.
Thanks for the review Colin, I've been looking at the p90 Revstar for a while
Best guitar channel ever!!!
Keep on keeping on.
Could tell you were having fun :) Was good to see. Watched to end 'Well Done". Thanks for the video! Best Regards and Best Wishes!
Love your videos dude
I was JUST considering buying one of these yesterday! Perfect timing.
Nice guitar, nice playing, always inspiring, always waiting for your new release! Thanks for your work. Keep it up!
Fantastic review as always. Great playing. It's definitely a cool guitar.
Another great video, cheers
This is a really thorough and accurate review of this fantastic guitar. I think Colin’s outstanding guitar playing in the latter half of the review tells you all you need to know about the incredible tonal qualities this guitar can produce. I own one in the sunset burst. No photograph does justice to that beautiful color. The build quality of this guitar almost defies description. It puts to shame guitars at almost any other price point. I’ll never part with this wonderful gem of a guitar.
Great review!! Love your playing as well. Cheers.
TY for your service to Guitar Enthusiast ❤
I really think you made it sing in the right spot for me. I was listening playing some billiards and had to rewind that little diddy a number of times I enjoyed it so much. Right place right moment I guess. Cheers!
Cheers man that's appreciated! 😁🙏
Nice one Colin!
Always got time for you, Col! Looked and played superbly, and you didn't need to tell us you'd had fun, we could see it in your playing. Miss you when you're gone, so I look forward to your next yt foray.
Love listening to you, feels like were hanging out together, great video as always!
I just got one of these. They’re incredible.
Good jam Col.
I'm buying one today.
Revstar is on my list to add to my collection, ive tried them a couple of times and thought they were awesome. excellent review as always.
I'm excited for this review! I've had my eye on these since for at least a year now...and I finally got to play one (with P90's), and it is one of the nicest playing and sounding guitars I've ever had in my hands.
Great video. You've tempted me to buy one.
I was just doing a repair on a friends 1980's Yamaha Acoustic and admired Yamaha's build quality.
A red label? lovely guitars. I have two Yamaha APX which are good value. I also have an Alvarez, which is top end features on a mid priced guitar
Fantastic build quality....but needed repairs?
@@nihilistlivesmatter was a guitar from the 80's and just needed a little life bought back to it
@@nihilistlivesmattery'know, like Martins do,
Loved your demo and your playing ! I’d like to have a Revstar in my collection .
I missed this when it came out and just now catching up. So happy to see you review this version! I own this version in swift blue. My first p90 guitar. I love it! Thanks for the review. 🩵
Just got the green one 3 days ago, great timing!!! Fantastic guitar, I don't regret getting rid of a couple Epiphones and Squiers towards one.
That's some guitar for the money. Great demonstration of it's various tones, thanks Colin.
I’ve had the same model for over a year. Zero buyer’s remorse. Strangely, I’m scared to tweak the setup on this, my first Les Paul style guitar. Thanks for the very useful upload. Subbed.
the sealing wax is clever as hell, thanks for the tip on top of the good review!
I really enjoyed the sound of this guitar. I remove my Gretsch scratch plates and put the screws back in the holes, it looks pretty good and adds a bit of stainless steel accent to the body.
I have one and I absolutely love it. Heaps of tones, plays great, and the stainless steel frets inspire me to practice more since I know they're practically indestructible. Loved your Riviera review too, it was that extra push over the cliff that made me get one. Having these two guitars made me thin my collection, I really didn't find myself wanting to play anything else.
This channel and your reviews are the absolute best on CZcams.
Everything about the way you review guitars is so good.
You can always tell when youre bonding and enjoying a guitar, and this was one of those times :-) Love your work, love listening.
I love the simplicity of the guitar's look. The ability to get so much tonal change with minimal knobs is something that I had to get a custom-built guitar to achieve. I enjoy the relaxed pace of your show. Thank you.
Oh I was gassing about the original series for so long, but never pulled the trigger. These are just so well made and found their spot in between all the Strats and Teles and Les Pauls and SGs. Fortunately I currently don't have the cash 😂
Fantastic guitar and the playing on it by you was terrific, plenty of tone options with all the switching 👍🎸😄
Nice surprise! Your Element review pushed me in the Revstar direction 6 months ago. Went for the Standard HB’s in black (and stripes, bikes, cars, love me some racing stripes!) It feels alive not even plugged in. Constantly use the volume to roll off, the boost and everything apart from middle position. So versatile. Doom to mellow. Feels quality, looks quality.
Same here!
@@888jimm impeccable taste sir!
I just purchased this guitar ( gold one) on the weekend after 20 minutes playing it in the store - it is UNBELIEVABLE for the price. On par with my now $3000 Musicman silhouette special. Stainless steel frets, incredible neck and the satin finish is smooth as silk - it sounds very loud and resonant acoustically. The pickups are fantastic, very punchy and articulate. Volume maintains treble throughout. I am flabbergasted - it feels like a 3000$ + guitar... the push pull switch is great with overdrive- especially the bridge pickup , but less useful on clean.
You clearly loved rocking out with this Col! I have had the exact same model for the past year and love the looks, versatility and tone. As you say, ergonomically it is just right, the belly carve is just right and the neck is silky smooth. Those P90s are pretty hot but the passive boost does tend to muddy the clarity; depends what you are after tone wise I guess. Thanks for a great review; you managed to play at speed even without those go faster stripes!
So man I love unboxing review videos ect. Your channel is up the top of the tree for me but I actually tune in to see you play more than anything, love your playing bro!! Inspiring!
Cheers man that’s appreciated! 😁🙏
The sunset burst Revstar shows the wood grain really well. It's a good color. Thanks for the review! I've owned the sunset burst one for about 6 months.
Love the Let's play something! You really put some passion into that. To many YTers just widdle as fast as they can.
I’ve had that exact same model and finish Revstar for just over a year and absolutely love it👌They are outstanding guitars for the price 👍I paid £629 inc £9.99 weekend delivery from guitar guitar last March .it comes in a nice Yamaha gig bag.👍
I’ve had this model guitar since they came out and I haven’t found anything to dislike about it. To me it has a very ES-335 on steroids vibe.
You sir have the best channel on you tube. I wish you all the success you have in your dream. Hoss from Atlanta, Ga
Great review.
Great video again Colin. The old 502 had a figured top option which was lovely. They need to offer that option again. Prices are rising though as they become more popular.
thanx Col, excellent as always! I personally like the sunburst one, a different sunburst for a change.
Oh and nice Fred Perry shirt ❤fabulous style and great playing also mate💥⚡️
So glad to see you reviewing this as I literally just took ownership of this model, but in Hot Merlot (which I like). IMO, it is really an excellent and versatile guitar that punches above its weight. Some have said the focus switch is not of much use, but I find it useful. I like the in between positions too. There is no loss of volume between the positions which is great.
Definately nice guitars Col! I have the Standard RSS20 in black, very nice guitar! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks! My first accoustic was a yamaha classical in the 70's, still have it for the grand kids to play with. Looked at the professional model a while back and seemed like good fit and finish. For me the color you have, is more my cup of tea.
WOW! More Les Paul than SG is a statement! I thought for sure the Revstar was like an SG with P90s. Fantastic review! Subscribed!!!
I was on the fence with this guitar Collin but you have definitely pushed me over to buy it a belting review 👌
Damn Colin! One of finest tones from you
G’day Col.
I’ve paused right at the start 0:13 looking fwd to this one
Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
Good to see you with this one, the thing that attracts me to these is the neck reinforcement (stainless frets are not a bad thing either). Nice jamming !!
Great guitar! Great video!
I like it when you go off on tangents , its your insights.
This is a great looking guitar! I really like the Revstar series. The build quality on these for what you pay for seems even better than what you're getting on $1,700 plus Gibsons etc. Anyway great review and playing Colin! 👍
I DO like the colours indeed! 😀And good that they made the pickups and scratch plate cream, that looks classy with a black guitar.
Sounds great. A junior version would be interesting. Cheers and be lucky
Sounds wicked man
fantastic guitar ,and we could see you liked it ,,best playing i heard of you on this channel :) that was cool mate ,,cheers from norway :)
I can't really play very well, but i love watching your videos just to geek out about guitars. The Revstar seems like a pretty nice guitar to own someday. Subscribed!
Had to grab my guitar and jam along with that. Fantastic. Thanks!
Nice one! 😁👍
nice one Colin🙂
Like the Friday night at the fights!
A knock out !
Cheers!
Good to know Yamaha is still in the game!
Colin, You gave that geetar a good workout and you sounded good with it. Yes, that was a very nice "bit of noodlin' " you treated us with. I wholeheartedly agree that, that guitar has character. Plus, the price keeps it in the ballgame for people with G.A.S. on a budget. This is a GOOD one to plan ahead for! I smell G.A.S.! Thanks again Colin for another great lesson!
Beautiful Friday evening, new guitar looks very very good, P90 are +++, great review including sound demo. Greetings. Pavel CZ.👍👍👍
Love the tip on the wax
I literally just picked up a standard humbucker in hot Merlot of these this week. Was a tough call, but I couldn’t find that black with p90’s in stock anywhere near me as I wanted to play it first. I’m happy to report that the standard RSS20 is every bit the most amazing guitar to hold, feel and play.
Despite that, I still aim to get the black with p90’s in addition to it at some point!
My RSS20 is the most comfortable to play, perfect balance and the neck and frets are perfection. The Epi LP 59 Ltd Edition feels like a log by comparison and now lives in its case. The Revstar is my ‘desert island’ instrument.
Great playing and review! A Revstar is definitely in my future, though I keep going back and forth on the flash green HH (love them stripes) or the burst P90 version.
Between yourself and Chris Buck, you have justified the existence of the Revstars. I have Three Gen 1’s and would not modify any part of them..👍🇦🇺
Stop it. Stop it.
I've been GASing for this guitar for ages, and enjoy your reviews. Now you go ahead and provide a glowing review and now its back to the top of my gotta have list.
Geezer!
I have been watching for quite some time now and that was probably your finest playing yet. The guitar must really speak to you!
Mind how you go
Came because of the review. Subscribed because you’re awesome.
