- This week we picked up a Yamaha Revstar RSE20 and dreamed of some Chris Buck inspired riffing. While the custom motorcycle culture vibe guitar lived up to expectations we had a little trouble kick starting our playing. Nice guitar though... join us for a close up look!

😊🙏
i swear you seem to release videos on guitars that I'm thinking about every week! best guitar channel by far!
Cheers Sam, I think we just both like cool guitars!! 😎👍
Crazy, I was thinking the same thing lol
Yeah and we are all gonna go broke. Lol. This guys great. Best reviews on the tube
Ditto 😂🤚🏼 what a nightmare... it becomes expensive watching this channel!!
I though the same... and then all of a sudden I’d bought 14 guitars... mmmm.
yup. Yamaha have been a permanent presence in my collection for years. looking forward to getting into one of these.
You always seem to have videos on guitars I'm interested in. I never buy a guitar until I check your channel, you give great insight and advice. Your channel is most appreciated. Thank you.
This is definitely my new favourite guitar channel. Amazingly informative, frank and down to earth reviews 👍👍
Cheers that's appreciated! 😎👍
You, sir have a very down to earth delivery. Thank you for your effort and sharing your knowledge. Authentic and relatable human reviews. Good work, may you keep it up for years to come.
Ooooooooh...I've been looking at this guitar quite a bit! Really looking forward to your review Colin.
Another example of how Yamaha always delivers, even on their "low end" guitars. Always great craftsmanship regardless of price point. Although I'm not a player of their electrics (I prefer Gretsch) their acoustics and other products have always impressed me - real bang for the buck (or pound). That inclusion of the handbook says it all about Yamaha - they really want you to enjoy their product to it's full potential. Terrific customer support as well by the way, they got me out of a jam on a very old acoustic 12 string I have from the 70's. Even found the part I needed in their inventory after a couple of days of searching. Thanks again for another great and entertaining video!
Cheers Bob, yes attention to detail is superb which is I think why I like it so much 😎👍
As always, a great review leaving me wanting one of these Revstars even more than before.....the fact that i have a similar playing style and sound, does not make it easy to resist.....cheers Colin, thanks!🎸🤘🎸
😎👍👍
Top review as always - lovely snippet of Shot By Both Sides, too!
😎👍
Great review Colin this seems like a quality instrument for the money! Love its looks, the standard model for the extra money is a real looker and the people that know these guitars seem to speak highly of them. Thanks for this I enjoyed every minute of it 👍
Nice review! I got one in Red-Copper and am smitten with how well it hangs on a strap, the light weight, the simple layout, the fast neck and the super playability. Having had dozens of budget-level guitars I can authoritatively say this is an exceptionally good budget-conscious guitar. I watched this because I'm thinking of buying a second one and putting in some different type of pickups to have another tone palette in such a great form.
Excellent, in-depth review, Colin. This looks like the perfect working-class gigging guitar to me. Simple, solid, well-balanced, and great sounding. My main gigging guitar is the RSS20, but I’m tempted to get an RSE20 as a backup.
What a brilliant review. No BS and good straight talking comments. Well done. So good I've subscribed straight away.
Cheers man that's appreciated! 😁👍
This is a great channel. I love the style of presentation. This guy is a real treat to listen to. As for yamaha guitars they are always well built but I won’t be changing from my les Paul any time soon. It seems that buying new guitars is an obsession with people these days, buying things we want but we don’t really need.
I been guilty of it in the past as much as anyone else.
Very useful review and thanks for plying the McGeoch lick.
I just picked up the standard ( one up from this model you've reviewed ) and its an absolutely fantastic guitar. Yamaha is highly underrated for sure.
You are the best guitar reviewer on CZcams by far. Greetings from Türkiye.
😊🙏
Man, I love your videos. I'm glad I found your channel
Cheers Carlos glad you found us man! 😎👍👍
What a great review! You've answered every question I had about this guitar. Most reviews are just "overviews" but I appreciate how you get into the nitty-gritty stuff that actually makes the difference between enjoying or just putting up with the instrument. Thanks, I'm so glad I discovered your page.
Thanks Neil glad you found us! 😎👍
Another great video, as always no BS review. I,ve been a fan of the Revstars for a while, I own a 502 from the first series, and have wondered why they weren't more popular. It did mean however they were ridiculously cheap (for the spec and quality) on the second hand market. Guitarists are fickle buggers though and are easily swayed by that G or F on the headstock. The Pacificas are also amazing value.
You are doing a great job reviewing guitars. In a different, no bullshit, straight to the point and showing everything we really want to know.
Thanks man that’s appreciated! 😎👍
I actually just bought this guitar today in Red Copper and used, from a local music shop. (Before watching your video)
Here is the kicker.....I can't even play!
I figured I might as well start with something half decent and beautiful to look at!
I really appreciated the breaking down of the components.
Granted I know not much of what they do it was nice to see under the hood.
Your delivery and attention to detail are top notch.
Much appreciated.
What a great channel. So honest, no bullshit. I would like to sit and have a pint with him and pick his brain. He is not trying to sell or push stuff just a solid review. We need to get him to 100k ASAP.
Cheers Thomas, that’s kind and very much appreciated! 🙏😊 thanks for the support man 😎👍👍
Another quality review Colin. I don't think I've ever come across a bad Yamaha product. Whether motorbike, amp, or guitar. Cheers!
😎👍 👍
Excellent stuff! Yamaha has a good reputation and it is nice to hear from an unbiased source that these new guitars are keeping the flag flying. I'm considering a Yamaha acoustic at the moment... we shall see.
Fun episode Colin, I feel like it suits you well actually, your playing on it sounded real nice, elegant and in the pocket. Well done sir.
Cheers David, that’s kind but I thought I was a bit sloppy this week! 🤣👍👍
Love it, great work as always
Man thank you for your awesome reveiws,, love the honesty and your down to earth approach.... Your a top bloke sir,, cheers
Your riff and playing at 25:44 is brilliant man. No need to show off or play some overly done blues riff. Very creative stuff. Got an immediate sub from me just for that, and also because I'm highly intereste4d in these Revstars.
Thanks for such an in depth video sir.
Cheers Gregory thanks for the kind words and support man it’s appreciated! 😎👍👍
What an incisive channel! A fortuitous find!
TGIF! Another great video as always. Thanks for the info!
Thanks Margaret have a great weekend! 😎👍👍
Excellent review, as thorough as ever. I've just played one of these. The Dry Switch makes your solos pop up above the mud if you're playing with other instruments around. It's kinda stretching the neck to avoid getting swamped under bass heavy driven guitars.
Great stuff again Colin 👍
Wow, your Friday Films come in at around 6pm my time. Always look forward; perfect to crack a bevvie and enjoy! Been hoping for a Revstar review and not disappointed - yet - that depends on the Cool Wall position... The tankpad back panel and brushed alloy stripes already give it superkool! -Thanks again Colin for a great review and upbeat segue into the weekend.
Cheers Bob.... I can't believe I missed the tankpad control panel design! 🤷♂️🙄 that explains the raised edge too... what a brilliant touch! 😁👍👍
Just got the RSS02T Sunset Burst last week and am now a fan of this guitar. It looks great and has a wonderful more resonant sound that must partly come from having the chambered body. That makes it feel and sound much more of an expensive guitar. Impressed!
Same here only in black😎👍
Is now my #1 guitar without vibrato system 😉👍
😎✌👍❤🖖
Hi Colin, great video as usual man, hope your well, great sounding guitar, really impressed, it's got a bit of a Rickenbacker vibe to it, luv it, thanks for sharing ✌️😎✌️
Good review. It’s nice to see a new version of the RevStar. I would like to try one, but local guitar shop doesn’t sell them. I’d like to see you review the RS sometime. Thanks.
Another fantastic review. My RSS20 will be arriving within 2 weeks! 😁
Great review on this guitar. Many thanks! I actually have it and it feels super cool to play it.
Dude your so awesome. I friggen love this channel. Thanks brother!!!
Thanks for the kind words man glad you found us! 😎👍👍
Just got one of these for myself and my tone knob is definitely a little wobbly too, but holy shit it is a beast of a guitar. I can’t fathom how this is their “low end” model because it feels incredible
Nice review. I was surprised - but pleased - by the Magazine riff!
😁👍
What a great video. Been looking at getting this for a while and can definitely see the appeal. If, like you said you mod it with some better pots and chuck out that dry switch you've got a fantastic guitar there.
Was hoping to get an honest review on these I could trust! Cheers man!
This is why This is my favorite guitar channel to watch He does such a great job of breaking down the guitar and going over every part and giving you a very honest opinion If it's a great guitar He will tell you if it's a so so guitar he'll tell You and if the guitar is Bad He will tell you he gives his honest opinion whatever guitar he does Not like some big dealers Whatever guitar they get is great Because There pushing the merchandise I appreciate his Honesty you can tell this is somebody who just loves guitars it likes to share that love with others It's nice to know there are still some people in this world that are honest And do videos for the love of the guitar not not for profit thank you
Thanks Anthony, the support from you guys is very much appreciated! 🙏😊
Very detailed review! Thank you!
A new subscriber but avid viewer of your chanel Colin. I bought a second hand early Revstar P90 model (rs502t - I believe) off fleabay for £380 and it is without doubt one of my fav guitars. It looks great, feels great, comfortable play and above all else, it sounds superb. Only mods I've added are locking tuners, a treble bleed and I scoured the back of the neck to make it slicker to play. For the money these guitars are superb and Yamaha consistently make great musical instruments🙌🤘😎
Great review and advice! The playing is not too bad as well. For the extra quid or dollars the RSS seems to be worth it. I'll go ahead and add it to my super cool list along with all the other's you've reviewed. Cheers.
Very informative, as usual. I love to see what's out there, my cup of tea or not. Until next Friday, Cheers!
Cheers man have a good weekend! 😎👍
This thing reminds me so much of my Washburn Idol except with that Japanese engineering. Looking forward to a strum on the P90 Standard. Great review Colin!
I have 2 Idols, which is probably why I like the looks of these.
Really enjoyed this video & review , been looking for the discontinued Yamaha Revstar RS502T in Bowden Green for a long while now but i don`t see them come up for sale . I think Yamaha make great instruments across the board for every price point.
I've got one and it's a fantastic guitar but a bit on the heavy side. I would be tempted by these chambered ones and probably the standard range.
A great review! I have the RSS with P90’s, inspired purchase from watching Chris Buck and it’s awesome! I would love to see you review it. 👊🏻🖤
Thanks. Nice honest review. Nice playing too. It's been many years since I heard 'Shot by Both Sides', I will have to go and dig it out. Might check out the P90 version.
Cheers Jason, yeah brilliant song! 🙌 I am waiting for the P90 versions to drop here in UK…
Never played any of them, but I've heard a lot of good things over the years. I do like how it sounds though Colin. Thx again. Cheers 🍻
Great review, yet again, sir!! And these come in left-handed!! 🤠👍
They do... and I can confirm that as they sent me one by mistake and I had to change it for this one. I don't know how you do it to be honest I wouldn't know where to start! 🤣
I was lucky enough to pick up a 2nd hand 2016 Revstar (a pro for half the price) & it’s a beautifully made guitar, I don’t think you can go wrong... I did hear that the entry level ones have ok electrics but seemed to get issues within a couple of years but the 2nd hand one I got last year is flawless
Thanks buddy very informative. I like your style.
I really like the look of that black beauty. You make it sound very good too, Colin.
The thing I considered here is that for the money the guitar is built for beginners. It’s built well enough so that beginners will not quit because of the low quality of a cheeper guitar. Very important! Plus, if say the guitarist is starting out at a young age, you have a thinner neck which is going to be much easier for them to play. Having jumbo frets makes it that much easier, too. For 400, I just can’t see where you could go wrong with something like this. I’d have to play it myself to make a final assessment, but just watching you...if I needed something like this, I would buy it just on your review. Well done.
Cheers man that’s appreciated. Good point, and Yamaha do very well with the Pacifica range for learners so makes sense they were thinking about this. 😎👍
Great vid, Colin! I enjoy your work. I find myself looking forward to fridays to catch a new episode. I've been looking at these Revstars. I keep thinking i want to get one but just can't seem to pull the trigger. Maybe that means i really don't want it? I'm too connected to my Les Paul i guess. Cheers, brother!
Cheers man, that's not a bad thing and at least when you find something else you really want it will be easier to justify on the basis that you didn't buy a Revstar... 😜
I love the nerding out on all things Guitar! 😁👍
Cheers man you're in the right place! 😆👍
I think this was your best playing outro. That must say something about you and the guitar. I have the cheapest Yamaha in the SG range, it's a great guitar, especially with upgraded pickups. The luthiers I saw said it was good enough for professional use. I got it from a pawn shop for £179.
Excellent video! I love the Revstar design. I can see the Yamaha SG 2000 heritage. Honestly if this design would have released in the late 1970s, Jake Burns of Stiff Little Fingers would have played the Revstar. I have two of the old series RS320, which was the stripped down plank version. Ripped out the pickups, the stock ones were way too bright and brittle. Besides that very high quality instruments, they always get compliments.
Nice video as always. Thanks
Aloha and Mahalo Colin. Great video again. All you need to say is Yamaha and you know it's going to be good
Get’s your motor running! 😆👍👍
Awesome video lots of great information, thank you
Cheers Lawrence have a great weekend! 😎👍
Hello, so funny as I have been looking at reviews for this Revstar series (but the P90 version) this morning then checking your new video and it is about revstar.
Good honest review. Food for thought
Great Vid Colin, not a bad choice for someone on a budget. Have a great weekend mate.
Cheers Jeff and you mate! 😎👍
Good evening, brother. I'm in the middle of dinner. I'd offer you something, but the internet hasn't worked that out quite yet. Great review. If I hadn't already committed to my Epi Modern I'd be giving that line a serious look. Especially with the degree of polish on the steel-fretted versions. Mother of Dog those necks and headstocks are beautiful. As is the rest of the guitar. Enjoyed the play-out. Keep the faith.
No fools here...just plain players!!!! Always a pleasure to watch your reviews and definitely your playing!
That's very kind thanks man! 🙏😎
Thanks for your review, very well done. Greetings from Uruguay, keep delivering; lol.
Thanks Eduardo, thanks for support!
Excelent guitar at a low price, superb review as always.
I Thoroughly enjoyed the detailed Review the Yamaha, I hope you do the same thing with the entire series
I think the RSS will very likely happen! 😎👍
I love Colin's channel SO much, but as for this video, I just think the quality available at the $600-$800 range is so much more amazing these days, it's hard for me to think of buying these cheaper models. I just doubt I'd play them given the guitars I already have, which are mid-range and not high-end. If I were a studied luthier, or simply used to tearing apart guitars like Colin, which to date I'm not, I'd think differently I suppose, given the ability to upgrade. These days, if your very careful with your, let's say $800, your options are endless, crazy good, and really so, so far beyond a guitar like this. But that's just my 2 cents. Heck, these days I pay $100 just to fill my trucks gas tank, so the difference between a $400 guitar and a $800 guitar becomes silly IF you'll enjoy and play it.
Cheers David, it's true, when you look at what you get for the money in this guitar it's pretty amazing... I think mid-range is the new high-end and high-end is for dentists, lawyers, and art collectors... of course I have been know to dabble with a bit of art... 😜
Great point. I've got a few of the new Epiphones that are KILLER guitars. All but one are well under $800, I wouldn't hesitate to gig with any of them
Not to worry, it won't replace Colin's SGs. Wives usually outlast mistresses. Ha..
I bought a Standard and it’s an absolute monster
@@theguitaristas yes, and alot of those people who own £6000 RI 59 les Pauls and other similar priced guitars have no idea how to get a decent tone out of them. My Japanese Tokai Love Rock has just as good a tone as any Gibson my friends own. By the way, I've owned two Gibson Les Pauls and Two SG's - a standard and a delux
My first guitar was an EG112 from a starter pack. I still have it and play it 22 years later. My main acoustic is an FGX800 that I got for 300 bucks. My piano is a P-125. And now I'm probably picking up one of these RSE20's. I'm convinced that Yamaha just does not make crappy instruments.
I'd 100% agree with that.
Colin,
I finally got around to buying a Black Yamaha Revstar P90 Standard last Saturday arrived Sunday.Have to say I’m completely blown away by how good this guitar is👍
The build quality is exceptional and the sounds you can get from it are awesome 👌👍
Nice one!... I should start looking for one perhaps if they are available...
I got a good deal from guitar guitar £620 over the phone 👍
Superb review !!
Cheers Marios!
Just purchased a RSP and it is by far one of the best guitars I have ever owned. These Yamaha guitars are truly on another level.
Lovely guitar, some nice Chris Buck influence in the playing there.
Another cracking video Colin. I have to admit that Yamaha guitars have always passed me by, instead always looking at Gibsons, Epiphones and Fenders, but that looks and sounds half decent. I certainly wouldn't mind trying a P90 version. Perhaps I should take the blinkers off and look at other makes....Nice one, take care mate, cheers.
Cheers Mark, you're not alone mate... probably the main reason I sold my original 502 as I replaced it with a 'gibson' 🤷♂️
Rosewood board on an affordable guitar that's an interesting move from Yamaha and welcome. Also like the look of those tuners. The body shape looks a bit Rickenbackery influenced to me and I like what Yamaha have done to embed the tramlines into the finish. Like the sound of the pickups as well as the jetglo finish.
I think Yamaha have jumped quickly on the fact that rosewood limitations are beginning to wane so we might see it return to the sub £600 ranges in the next couple years
My 2002 Yamaha Vstar was also great bang for the buck.
Cant really lose with anything made by Yamaha
Cheers Colin, nice one. Yamaha always make decent gear at any price but it is at the top end of the range where they really shine I think. I very nearly pulled the trigger on an old Yamaha MSG Standard - one of the best guitars I’ve ever had the pleasure to use. Instead, I’m having an electric built by Bailey Guitars in Scotland.
Nice to have a guitar custom made 😎👍
Another great review … from the off sounds great and got its own thing going on .. the P90 is on the must get list here has been for a while but the new release seems to offer a lot more … but luv’d the pickup covers on the 502 … enjoyed cool tones… more
Cheers Gerry! 😎👍
Mint review cheers 👍
Another great little video, and what a lovely guitar for the price! It sure does give a few nods to the cafe' racer motorbike culture of yesteryear. I quite like that jack plate which looks 'filigreed' on my screen. If I may say so, I think it suits you, and I can only see you replacing it for the RSS model...which might be your next video??? ha.... (Now for me to resist the temptation to check one out at asap.) .Cheers be well, thank you.
😎👍👍
Nice playing mate 👌
Thanks that’s appreciated! 😎👍
looks and sounds like a nice guitar. Tempting to try one out, but i don't really have the space or need for a new guitar.
Nice review as always
That was awesome.Thank you
Love your channel ... and love your playing ! I am in love with Yamaha's Revestar serie since I bought the 502t back in 2016 ...I have other guitars, much high end for some of them, still, I will never get rid of the Yamahas ... What I would love to see is a comparison between the 502t and the new RSS02t ... I am tempted to buy that new P90's Yamaha but only if there will be a major difference with the 502t ... otherwise I"ll buy the Humbucker RSS02 instead ... but I'll buy another one for sure :-)
I love Yamahas, especially Yamaha designs that are unique to Yamaha. They have a unique aesthetic. There's a vibe that seems to go back to classic 70s and 80s Yamahas.
I must agree, the design is fabulous 👌
I'm thinking of buying one of these guitars but modifying it. As I have some montys pafs lying around so going I'm.probably best going for this model over the other ones with it being cheaper. Great video and insight into this guitar
hey colin maybe its time for an update on the "kool guitars" series!
this one will be on that list im sure...as well as the 3 "new/old" epiphone models you reviewed....
i know its in the works haha!
great review as always!
My favorite guitar channel for getting the real story on affordable guitars.
I was thinking of picking up an Revstar Element but after this video I don't think I'll bother, instead I'll save up my pennies and go for the Standard version instead. Cheers good review as always!
I think that's definitely a good call if you can 😎👍
It's the old Revstars that have a thicker 56mm neck... you should check them out! Your review was nice and thorugh... keep them going!
Great video Colin. Yes, a P90 Revstar does sound interesting!
Cheers Wayne, it's going to be hard to resist!
OH NO !!! another one on the list, this madness will have to stop, motorbikes and guitars a devastating combination. but which one will have to go, really no room left ,thanks to you !, great to hear it through the Blackstar again , thanks so much taking the amp comment on board, did`nt think anyone really reads the comments , great review as usual , always look forward to Friday night review, not sure the wallet or the wife do though Ha!!
I’m tempted to pick up Blackstar HT5 Head now as that may be the perfect budget tube amp… ? 🤔
Strongly considering the standard with P90s. These look awesome. Thanks for the great review.
Cheers man... yes I'm considering P90 version too! 😆👍
Shot By Both Sides, classic and very apt for this wee brute!
😎👍👍
